Nat Sciver-led England defeat West Indies to seal T20I clean sweep

CHELMSFORD: England women secured a narrow 17-run victory over West Indies in the third T20I, completing a whitewash despite Hayley Matthews’ defiance here on Monday.

With this victory, England clinched the T20I series 3-0 under the new captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt.

Heather Knight was the team’s stand-out performer, making her highest T20I innings on home soil with a 47-ball 66.

The visiting team’s skipper Hayley Matthews kept the game alive and the 3,500-strong crowd entertained, but when she fell with 31 runs still required, the outcome became clear.

Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt lost her first toss as full-time England Women captain and on a wicket that offered some assistance to the bowlers, her side were indebted to her predecessor Knight for her role in getting up to 144-5.

Lauren Bell took a wicket with the first ball of the West Indies’ reply, and would finish her four overs going for just 11 runs. Linsey Smith, Em Arlott and Charlie Dean each took two wickets apiece.

Matthews wasn’t to end up on the winning side, but she did claim both Player of the Match and Player of the Series.

England and the West Indies will go head to head again in Derby on Friday in the first game of the ODI series. The final match will be played on 7 June at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton

England’s Sciver prevails in ICC Women’s awards

DUBAI: England all-rounder Nat Sciver has been named ICC ODI Women’s Cricketer of the Year besides making his claim on the prestigious Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

Sciver bagged both awards after she scored 1346 runs and took 22 wickets from her 33 international matches in 2022.

“The sublime all-rounder produced brilliant performances across all formats and frequently delivered against the highest calibre of opposition,” said ICC.

She notched up five half-centuries and two hundred last year, including her maiden Test hundred against South Africa in June that put England in complete control of the second Test.

Meanwhile, she was a standout performer in the 50-over format where she amassed 833 runs at an average just below 60 and a strike rate of 91.43.

She played a pivotal role in England’s qualification to the final of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022. She scored a stunning unbeaten 148 in the final, chasing Australia’s mammoth 356 but eventually fell short of the target.

“Jaw-dropping knocks and being a non-stop threat with the ball have helped England’s Nat Sciver claim the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.” read ICC statement.

The three other nominees for the coveted award were India’s Smriti Mandhana, New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr and Australia’s Beth Mooney.

Meanwhile, the English all-rounder saw off competition from Shabnim Ismail (South Africa), Amelia Kerr (New Zealand) and Alyssa Healy (Australia) on her way to the ODI Women’s Cricketer of the Year award,

Alice, Sciver shines with centuries as England take lead against South Africa

HOVE: England’s middle-order batter Nat Sciver and the debutant Alice Davidson-Richard recovered the home side from the collapse with their centuries as they attained the 44-run lead over South Africa on the conclusion of the second day.

In the one-off Test between the two sides, the hosts started their first inning from 0/0 in response to South Africa’s 284 and were off to a brilliant start as their opening pair provided a solid foundation with a 65-run stand.

The duo of Emma Lamb and Tammy Beaumont displayed determination and dominated the touring bowlers till the 19th over before Anneke Bosch trapped the latter in her legs to draw first success for her side. Beaumont scored 28 off 61 balls with the help of four boundaries.

Following her departure, the home side began to lose wickets at a regular interval and soon slipped to 121-5 after Lunch.

England’s star pair of Sciver and Davidson-Richard then anchored the innings with both scoring centuries and bolstered their side to take a decent 44-run lead before the latter perished on the last delivery of the second day’s play.

The debutant scored 107 off 194 balls, laced with 17 boundaries, while Sciver remained unbeaten with her astounding 119 off 207 deliveries with the help of 15 boundaries.

For South Africa, Bosch led the way with three wickets, while Tumi Sekhukhune Nonkululeko Mlaba made one scalp each.

Sciver 119* and Sophi Ecclestone will now resume England’s first innings at 328/6 as they looked to gather a handsome lead over the opposition.
