Bowlers-led Pakistan crush Netherlands to script triumphant World Cup start

HYDERABAD: A combined bowling effort after Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel’s anchoring half-centuries propelled Pakistan to launch a triumphant ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with an 81-run victory over the Netherlands.

Set to chase 287, the Netherlands could score 205 despite Bas de Leede and Vikramjit Singh’s half-centuries.

The Dutch had a decent start to the pursuit until Hasan Ali provided a much-needed breakthrough to Pakistan in the sixth over by dismissing Max O’Dowd, who could score five.

Singh then put on a brief 22-run partnership with Colin Ackermann (17), which lasted when Iftikhar Ahmed castled the latter on the first delivery of the 12th over.

Bas de Leede then joined Singh in the middle and the pair partnered strongly to knit the largest partnership of the Netherlands’ innings, adding 70 runs to the total.

The duo frustrated the strong Pakistan bowling attack before Shadab Khan broke the shackles by removing the opener in the 24th over.

Singh scored 52 off 67 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and a six.

The Netherlands then lost their way in the run chase as they began to lose wickets at regular intervals and soon slipped to 164/7 with their mainstay Bas de Leede also walking back.

He top-scored for the Dutch with a 68-ball 67 which included six boundaries and two sixes.

Logan van Beek offered some resistance with his unbeaten 28-run cameo but Pakistan bowlers booked the side on a modest 205 runs in 41 overs.

Haris Rauf was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with 3/43, followed by Hasan Ali with 2/33 while Shaheen Shah Afridi, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz struck out a batter each.

Put into bat first, Pakistan could register a below-par total of 286 runs on the board despite anchoring half-centuries.

Pakistan got off to a dismal start as they lost their top three Fakhar Zaman (12), Imam-ul-Haq (15) and Babar Azam (5) with just 38 runs on the board in 9.1 overs.

Following the slump, wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan was joined by young Saud Shakeel at the crease and the pair launched an astounding recovery.

Rizwan and Saud batted with determination and put Pakistan back in command with a 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket, with both scoring half-centuries.

Aryan Dutt drew a much-needed breakthrough for the Netherlands in the 29th over by dismissing Shakeel, who scored a brisk 68 in 52 deliveries, laced with nine boundaries and a six.

Mohammad Rizwan followed him back to the dugout in the 32nd over. He remained the joint top-scorer for Pakistan with 75-ball 68, hitting eight boundaries.

Pakistan then coped another blow in the same over when Bas de Leede got Iftikhar Ahmed (9) caught behind and consequently slipped to 188/6.

All-rounders Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz then put together a crucial partnership for the seventh wicket and added 64 runs to the total.

The pair had Pakistan in command to bat through the allotted overs but Bas de Leede struck again to get rid of Shadab in the 44th over which opened the floodgates.

He scored 32 off 34 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

Pakistan then lost two more wickets in quick succession including their mainstay Mohammad Nawaz walking back after scoring a 43-ball 39.

Tailenders Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi added valuable runs to the total with their 19-run partnership before Ackermann got the latter stumped to book Pakistan on a below-par total in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener.

Bas de Leede led the bowling attack for the Netherlands with 4/62, followed by Ackermann’s 2/39 while Dutt, Logan van Beek and Paul van Meekeren made one scalp each.

Rain washes out Australia-Netherlands warm-up match after Starc’s hat-trick

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mitchell Starc took a hat-trick against the Netherlands on Saturday before rain abandoned the ICC World Cup 2023 warm-up fixture.

Set to chase 167 in 23 overs, the Netherlands found themselves in heaps of trouble as left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc ran through their top order with a hat-trick.

Starc’s hat-trick left the Netherlands reeling at 12/3 before Mitchell Marsh made it 15/4 by castling Vikramjit Singh in the fourth over.

Sybrand Engelbrecht and Colin Ackermann then put on a brief 31-run partnership to settle things before Sean Abbott and Marnus Labuschagne hit back for Australia.

Engelbrecht could score a mere nine before falling victim to Abbott while Dutch captain Scott Edwards scored 14.

Ackermann remained the top-scorer for the Netherlands — who could score 84/6 in 14.2 overs — with an unbeaten 31 in 37 balls with the help of three boundaries.

Mitchell Starc led the bowling attack for Australia with 3/18 while Marsh, Abbott and Labushchagne struck out a batter each.

Opting to bat first in Saturday’s second warm-up fixture, which was reduced to 23 over a side due to persistent rain here, Australia racked up a commendable total at the back of Steven Smith’s half-century.

The five-time champions, however, got off to a contrasting start as Josh Inglis, who was promoted to open the innings alongside Smith, fell for a three-ball duck.

Smith was then joined by wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey and the pair anchored Australia to 59 in eight overs before Roelof van der Merwe castled the latter.

Carey scored 28 off 25 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and a six.

Australia then endured another setback in the next over when Shariz Ahmad dismissed Glenn Maxwell, who could score a mere five.

Smith then joined forces with Cameron Green and took Australia past the 100-run mark, also amassing his half-century in the process, before finally perishing in the 15th over.

He top-scored for Australia with a 42-ball 55 which featured four boundaries and three sixes.

Following his departure, Green and Mitchell Starc scored vital runs for Australia at the backend, propelling their side to put a decent total on the board.

Green scored 34 in 26 balls, laced up with four boundaries and a six, while Starc played an unbeaten 24-run knock in 22 deliveries with the help of one boundary and a six.

Logan van Beek, Bas de Leede and Roelof van der Merwe bagged two wickets each while Shariz Ahmed made one scalp.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Sean Abbott, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc.

Netherlands squad: Scott Edwards (c), Max O’Dowd, Bas de Leede, Vikram Singh, Teja Nidamanuru, Paul van Meekeren, Colin Ackermann, Roelof van der Merwe, Logan van Beek, Aryan Dutt, Ryan Klein, Wesley Barresi, Saqib Zulfiqar, Shariz Ahmad, Sybrand Engelbrecht.

Netherlands eye semi-final place at ICC World Cup 2023

Netherlands coach Ryan Cook believes his team can upset the odds and make it all the way to the ICC World Cup 2023 semi-finals, fully deserving their seat at cricket’s top table.

Inspired by star all-rounder Bas de Leede, the Netherlands secured their place in the ICC World Cup 2023 in India with some eye-catching results.

The most notable was beating West Indies in a super over after equalling a huge total of 374 at the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June.

Cook also told AFP that his team are not going to the World Cup just to make up the numbers.

“We hold high hopes going into this World Cup that we can put in a couple of really big performances and those can result in wins. We’ll be putting everything that we can in to get to those five or six wins to take us into the semi-finals,” he said.

The Netherlands will open their World Cup campaign against Pakistan on October 6 and recently spent eight days at a “spin camp” in India to prepare for the conditions and the bowling they are likely to face.

They have a well-earned reputation as giant killers at international tournaments, edging out South Africa at the T20 World Cup last November.

Max O’Dowd, the team’s top ODI scorer this year, said the Netherlands have shown they can compete with the big guns and chase down big scores when needed.

“I mean if we go there just trying to get involved and enjoy a World Cup, then what’s the point? We’re going there to try and win every game and hopefully we can do that,” O’Dowd told AFP.

Both Cook and O’Dowd said the Netherlands had benefitted from recent fixtures against the top teams but were hungry for more.

It hasn’t always gone to plan. England came to Amsterdam and smashed the record for the highest total in a 50-over game, scoring 498, powered by Jos Buttler’s 162 off just 70 balls in June last year.

“If we can be that team that plays on that main stage more often, we can make strides at the main table for sure,” said Cook.

The Netherlands has good infrastructure, and good facilities and can host teams and supporters well, insisted the coach, urging more major nations to tour the country.

“Playing the best teams in the world is something that I think we’ve deserved through the cricket we’ve played, and we just want teams to come here,” added O’Dowd.

The New Zealand-born O’Dowd admitted that Dutch cricket was “unique”, especially at club level.

“One week you could be playing against Punjab on a mat and then three days later you’re playing an international,” he said.

“I think that’s the unique thing about Dutch cricket and I think it actually makes us who we are, makes us play the cricket we play and it forces us to get in uncomfortable situations and it makes you develop fast.”

The Netherlands have not qualified for the World Cup since 2011 and O’Dowd says they are under no illusions as to the challenge they face.

“Obviously it’s going to be very tough. Some of the best teams in the world are there but we’re one of those best teams ourselves,” he said.

Roy, Salt shine as England blunt Netherlands in a rain-hit second ODI

AMSTELVEEN: Openers Jason Roy and Phil Salt led the charge for England to take their side to a comfortable victory by six wickets against the Netherlands in the rain-hit second ODI, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 236 runs, England batters completely dominated the opposition in a match reduced to 41 overs-per-side as wet outfield delayed the start by nearly three hours.

After scoring the highest ODI total in the previous game, the energetic England side came out on the crease with a similar force, bringing up 100 runs in the 15th over.

Roy, who fell cheaply in the last game, joined the party this time as he glittered with a powerful 73 runs knock, laced with 13 fours and a six. Whereas, Salt blasted 77 off 54 including 9 boundaries.

England skipper Eoin Morgan, continued with his dismal form when he was dismissed on a duck for the second time in the series. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone failed to impress this time as he was bowled out by Tim Pringle cheaply.

The left-handed duo of Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali, however, crushed the Dutch bowlers again after a hiccup in middle and took their side home with the blistering knocks of 36 and 42, respectively.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Dutch side set a total of 235 with skipper Scott Edwards leading the way for his team with a brilliant 78 off 73 deliveries.

Teja Nidamanuru joined Edwards to raise a firm fifth-wicket partnership of 73 runs when the hosts were suffering at 97/4. Logan van Beek put up a steady knock after David Willey bowled out Nidamauru and also got rid of Edwards through run out. Shane Snater played a cameo of unbeaten 17 off 10 balls.

England now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against the hosts while the dead rubber match will be played on Wednesday.

Depay double propels Netherlands to blunt Belgium 4-1 in Nations League

BRUSSELS: Netherlands’ Memphis Depay struck twice to earn his team a historic feat against the home side Belgium, who lost to the Dutch after 25 years, in the UEFA Nations League Group D match.

The Barcelona striker Depay looked in a fierce form as Steven Bergwijn and Denzel Dumfries also shared the team’s thumping lead of four goals. Belgium retaliated with a lone goal by Michy Batshuayi in the extra time.

Belgium started aggressively and could have taken a lead early on if Timothy Castagne hadn’t hit the crossbar, but the tide turned towards the Netherlands when Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was taken off after an injury.

Bergwijin netted the ball for the first time in the 40th minute of the game, rendering his opponents to a deficit before the halftime.

Netherland completely dominated the opponents in the second half as Depay hit home in the 51st minute. Dumfries also got into the action and kicked the ball into the net in the 61st minute, quickly followed by Depay’s second blow in the 65th minute to thrash Belgium out of the game.

Netherlands will now be playing against Poland and Wales-the other two teams in Group D- after starting their UEFA Nations League campaign on a high note.

Netherlands beat Ireland by one run in World Cup Super League thriller

Utrecht: The Netherlands defeated Ireland by just one run on Wednesday in the first of three one-day internationals in Utrecht.
Timm van der Gugten starred with both bat and ball in a match that forms part of the World Cup Super League qualifying process for the 2023 50-over showpiece in India.

Test nation Ireland had the edge early on, with Craig Young and Josh Little taking three wickets apiece before tailender Van der Gugten’s 49 from 53 balls saw the Netherlands to a total of 195.
Ireland then collapsed to 69-5 before the experienced Paul Stirling revived their innings with 69 only to fall to Van der Gugten, the man of the match.
Left-arm spinner Pieter Seelar then took two wickets in an over to leave Ireland needing 19 runs from 24 balls.
And with three required off the last ball, Ireland No 10 Little failed to connect, with the ensuing bye not enough to deny the Dutch a tense victory.

The second ODI is scheduled for Friday, with the series concluding on June 7.
For the World Cup, hosts India and the top seven sides thereafter in the 13-team Super League will qualify automatically.
The remaining five teams will then play in a 2022 qualifying event to decide the final two sides for a 10-nation World Cup.
