Shaun Tait appointed as Bangladesh’s pace bowling coach

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait as the fast bowling coach until November 2027.

Adams, the former New Zealand pacer, is stepping down from the role well before his two-year contract, signed in February 2024, was set to expire.

According to Bangladesh media, the decision to part ways was mutual between Adams and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), though the exact reasons behind his early departure remain under wraps.

Adams had taken over the role following Allan Donald’s exit after the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

While his appointment initially generated optimism, his tenure has come to an end just 15 months in, opening the door for a familiar name to return to the international coaching circuit.

In an official statement, BCB shared the details of Tait’s contract.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is pleased to announce the appointment of former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait as the Pace Bowling Coach of the Bangladesh National Team. The 42-year-old will join the team setup later this month, having agreed to terms with the BCB on a contract that runs until November 2027,” the BCB said in a statement.

Shaun Tait expressed excitement at joining the Bangladesh team, praising the country’s fast bowlers.

‘It’s a good time to be involved with the Bangladesh cricket team right now, a bit of a new era if you like. It’s been spoken about many times recently—the young talent with the fast bowlers, which is great,” he said.

The 42-year-old emphasised result result-oriented approach, stressing wins for the team.

‘This is international cricket, not a development team, and everyone expects the talent to bring results, which is very much my focus with the fast bowling group and most importantly, getting more wins for the team,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that, Tait also has considerable experience in franchise cricket, including a recent stint with Karachi Kings during the postponed PSL season 10 and a previous role as head coach of the Chittagong Kings in the BPL.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Tait has been linked with Bangladesh. He had previously applied for the same role during an earlier recruitment cycle but withdrew his candidacy at the last moment.

Shaun Tait has now emerged as the frontrunner to replace Adams. The former Australian speedster is no stranger to subcontinental cricket, having worked as Pakistan’s bowling coach and later serving in a consultancy role with Afghanistan.

However, talks reportedly resumed during the recent BPL season, and significant progress has been made toward finalising his appointment this time around.

An official announcement from the BCB is expected soon as Bangladesh prepare for a brief tour of the UAE, where they’ll play two T20Is in Sharjah on May 17 and 19.

“He [Hasan] is a sort of leader, I think sometimes he is a bowling coach, Tait said in a lighthearted manner.

“He takes the leadership and he tries to help the younger guys. He is good in this regard as a bowling leader. I have worked with him in the past, and I don’t interfere with his bowling too much, now at this stage of his career, he knows what he is doing,” he remarked.

Reflecting on the defeat against Quetta Gladiators, he said we should have won the match, urging the batters to take responsibility during pressure situations.

“We should have won today’s game. Someone from the batting unit needed to take responsibility and finish the game, ” said Tait.

It is worth mentioning that Quetta Gladiators edged Karachi Kings by five runs in the 15th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday.

In pursuit of a target of 143 runs, the Karachi Kings ended up falling short, finishing their innings at 137 for 8 despite a strong start.

The innings began on a shaky note when captain David Warner was dismissed for just four runs by Mohammad Amir in the first over. Nevertheless, Tim Seifert and James Vince fought back aggressively, putting pressure on the Quetta Gladiators.

Together, they created a 50-run partnership for the second wicket, consistently finding the boundary and taking control.

The tide of the match turned when Quetta captain Saud Shakeel ended their partnership by dismissing Vince for 30 runs off 29 deliveries, leaving the Kings at 77 for 2 in the ninth over.

Seifert continued his aggressive batting but was taken out by Mohammad Wasim Jr. for a rapid 47 runs off 26 balls, which brought Karachi to 93 for 3 in the 12th over.

Karachi’s middle order crumbled under the mounting pressure. Shan Masood struggled, getting out for a disappointing 9 runs off 17 balls to Khurram Shahzad. Things worsened when Abrar Ahmed dismissed Khushdil Shah without scoring, followed by Amir, who took out Mohammad Nabi for only four runs.

Shahzad struck again, sending Abbas Afridi back for no runs, and Wasim Jr. further diminished Karachi’s prospects by dismissing Omair Bin Yousuf for 11 runs.

Despite a resilient performance from Hasan Ali, who scored 24 not out off 13 balls, the Kings fell short of their target, losing by five runs.

For Quetta Gladiators, it was an all-round bowling effort with Mohammad Amir, Abrar Ahmed, and Khurram Shahzad taking two wickets each.

Shaun Tait opens up on possible return as Pakistan coach

Former Australian pacer Shaun Tait has shared his thoughts on a potential coaching role with the Pakistan cricket team in the future.

Tait was appointed Pakistan’s fast bowling coach in February 2022 for a one-year term. During his tenure, Pakistan reached the finals of both the 2022 T20 World Cup and the Asia Cup. The 42-year-old worked closely with emerging fast bowlers like Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi.

While speaking on a digital platform, Shaun Tait shed light on his role as a coach in the Pakistan team.

Shaun Tait emphasized the importance of consistency during his time. He mentioned that coaching the Pakistan team was a significant aspect of his cricketing career.

“I mean, I’m going to try not to be as cliche as possible here. But, Like, I have said before you do get a connection for places and people, ” he said.

“The year I coached Pakistan was an important part of my cricket career in general. And I think it was a unique experience for me. You know, when I was there, it was actually all right. I think we had the same coaching staff the entire time I was there, and it was fairly consistent,” he added.

The Adelaide-born fast bowler, however, did not rule out the possibility of a future coaching opportunity with the Pakistan team.

“It was a pretty decent year to be honest, so, you never rule anything out in the future. And like I said I would like to keep a connection with Pakistan cricket, ” said Shaun Tait.

It is worth mentioning that over the past two years, the Pakistan team has had six different coaches. Abdul Rahman served as the interim head coach, while Mohammad Hafeez held the position of national team director.

During this time, Azhar Mahmood also acted as an interim head coach. Jason Gillespie was the head coach for the Test team, and Gary Kirsten took on the role of head coach for the ODI team.

Shaun Tait banking on experience in Karachi Kings’ pace attack

Karachi Kings’ fast bowling coach, Shaun Tait, has expressed confidence in the team’s depth and experience as they prepare for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10.

Tait, who has previously coached Pakistan and Afghanistan and was recently part of Quetta Gladiators’ coaching staff in PSL 9, believes the composition of the Karachi Kings squad will make strategic execution more seamless.

ā€œIt’s a strong side with serious experience—not just among the international players but also with the local stars,” he stated.

“You’ve got Pakistan’s Test captain [Shan Masood], and of course, David Warner leading the side. When you have players who’ve seen it all, the strategy side becomes easier. The key is to slot them into the right roles and let them do their job.ā€

Speaking about his approach as a fast bowling coach, Shaun Tait emphasized tailoring tactics based on individual skill sets.

ā€œIt depends on the bowler. If someone is an out-and-out pacer, you have to let them unleash and go for wickets. Others might focus more on line and length, slower deliveries, and variations,” he added.

“If you’re lucky enough to have a genuine strike bowler, you just let him bowl as fast as he can.ā€

Tait, known during his playing days for his raw pace and aggression, has represented Australia in all three formats, claiming 95 international wickets and 598 across his professional career.

Now, on the coaching front, he’s pleased with the blend of senior pros and emerging talent in the Kings’ setup.

ā€œWe’ve had a couple of good training sessions. Many of the players have already represented Pakistan and played in PSL for years,” he further stated.

“There’s not much heavy coaching required with such experienced guys. For the younger ones who might not start in the first couple of games, this is a golden chance to learn from seasoned teammates.ā€

‘Naseem reminds me of myself’ Pakistan’s bowling coach Shaun Tait

KARACHI: Former Australian speedster and Pakistan team’s bowling coach Shaun Tait has lauded young pacer, Naseem Shah, for his fierce bowling skills, acknowledging that the 19-year-old is more intelligent than him when he was a young fast bowler.Ā

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the national team’s practice session on Sunday, Tait praised Pakistan’s pace battery for their natural abilities, saying his main responsibility is to instil confidence in them

“Pakistan fast bowlers have their natural abilities. They like to keep things simple but they’ve got so much ability and have a lot of flare. So, that’s already ingrained in these guys,” he said. ” For me, it’s pretty simple building relationship with these guys and giving them confidence”

Talking about Naseem, Tait claimed that the 19-year-old reminded him of his own younger days as a fast bowler and hailed his skills with the new ball.

“In some ways, he reminds me of myself when I was a younger cricketer. He’s sort of free-spirited. But I wasn’t as intelligent. I think you’ve all seen his natural abilities and skill with the new ball,ā€ said the bowling coach.

As the preparations are heading towards the final stages for Pakistan’s first encounter of the historic T20I home series against England, Tait stated he wouldn’t be surprised if batting wickets were prepared for the series.

“I haven’t had a chance to look at the wickets. It’s probably gonna be pretty good for batting,” he asserted.

When asked about an update on star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s rehabilitation, the bowling coach replied that he was not fully aware of his progress. “The only thing that I know is that he is coming along well,” he concluded.

‘Coming with good spinners’, Tait warns Sri Lanka for creating turn wicketsĀ

KARACHI: Pakistan’s fast bowling coach, Shaun Tait has warned Sri Lanka against creating spin wickets that might favour Pakistan in the forthcoming Test series as the touring party includes exceptional spinners among its ranks.

“There are talks around spin, for obvious reasons, But I think, you [Pakistan] might be the team that changes that for sure. I mean, maybe Sri Lanka doesn’t want to create big spinning wickets against Pakistan,” he said in an interview given to EspnCricinfo.

Tait believed that the Sri Lankan approach of creating spin tracks on their home soil worked to their disfavour against the teams coming with good spinners citing the way Australia crushed the hosts in the first Test of the ongoing Test series.

“It’s sort of what they did against Australia, and Australia bowled really well. So you’ve got to be a little bit careful with opposition coming with good spinners and creating turning tracks that can also favour the opposition,” he added.

The bowling coach put his weight behind the pacer Hassan Ali, who is criticized for being out of form, and praised the fast bowler for his hard work asserting that fortunes would turn for him once he starts getting wickets.

“There’s never a shortage of hard work, that’s for sure,” he claimed. “It’s just a matter of taking wickets, right, so if he runs it and takes wickets, the media and the public all of a sudden they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s in great form’.”

Meanwhile, the bowling coach has great expectations from the national team’s pace attack and expressed confidence that the fast bowlers will put on an impressive bowling performance in their upcoming assignment in Sri Lanka.

“I’m looking at a fast-bowling group,” he said. You look at the guys likeĀ Hasan Ali or Shaheen Shah [Afridi], they had [an] excellent last season. Naseem Shah’s coming off a great series against Australia and the way Haris Rauf is so excited to make a claim in Test cricket. So these guys have played a lot of cricket, [and] I have not noticed anything that would tell me otherwise that they’re really confident and keen to go Sri Lanka and play well.”

Tait further went on to claim that the defeat by Australia in the Test series earlier this year has made the national team hungry for red-ball success, meanwhile, hailing the national Test squad for being capable of playing under any conditions.

“Obviously losing to Australia in the Test series has made this Pakistan group really hungry,” he said. Ā If we can go with a squad that can play in any condition, which to me we’re pretty close right now by the look of it.” he concluded.
