Mike Hesson explains Babar Azam demotion in Namibia clash

COLOMBO: Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has revealed reason behind Babar Azam’s demotion in the batting order during the Namibia clash in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Speaking to the media ahead of New Zealand fixture, Hesson cited Babar Azam’s strike rate in the first six overs, stating that the batter is aware of his strike rate in the World Cup.

“I think Babar is well aware that his strike rate in the power play in the World Cup is less than 100 and that’s clearly not the role we think we need,” Hesson told reporters after Pakistan’s final practice session on Friday was washed out by rain.

“We brought Babar back in for a specific role post the Asia Cup,” he added.

The head coach also said that there are several other options available to step in and fulfill that role, and Babar himself recognizes this.

“We’ve got plenty of other options who can come in and perform that role towards the end. Babar is actually the first to acknowledge that, ” he continued.

“He knows that he’s got a certain set of skills that the team requires and there are certain times where other players can perform that role more efficiently,” the 51-year-old said.

Mike Hesson also emphasizes Pacer Salman Mirza’s recent performance, calling him unlucky to miss out on the high-stakes India-Pakistan fixture.

“We made a call that Salman Mirza was coming in for Shaheen, and he bowled incredibly well,” he said.

“To be fair, he was probably really unlucky to not be playing the second and third games.”

He concluded by acknowledging that New Zealand is well aware of the conditions and they must do their best to emerge victorious.

“New Zealand have played a huge amount in the subcontinent in recent times so we have to play at our best.”

England Lions outplay Pakistan Shaheens in series opener

ABU DHABI: Asa Tribe’s 64* guided England Lions to a four-wicket win over Pakistan Shaheens in the opening T20 fixture here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium Nursery One on Friday.

After being put into bat, Pakistan Shaheens posted 152 for seven in their allotted 20 overs.

Skipper Shamyl Hussain led from the front with 57 off 39 balls, including four boundaries and four maximums.

The opening stand of Shamyl and Maaz Sadaqat added 56, with Maaz Sadaqat scoring 17 from 18 balls.

Meanwhile, Saad Baig (21, 20b, 2x4s) and Abdul Samad (21,12b, 2x6s) provided momentum through the middle overs.

Arafat Minhas, coming to bat at number seven, finished strongly with an unbeaten 13 off nine balls, which included two fours, helping Shaheens cross the 150-run mark.

For England Lions, James Coles and Saqib Mahmood picked up two wickets each.

Pakistan Shaheens made early inroads as Akif Javed struck twice inside the powerplay to remove Will Smeed and England Lions captain Jordan Cox, leaving the opposition under pressure in the chase.

Ahmed Daniyal, Saad Masood, and Sufiyan Muqeem chipped in with a wicket apiece, keeping Shaheens in the contest through the middle overs.

However, unbeaten 64 from Asa Tribe, including six fours and a six, took Lions over the line in 19.1 overs.

The second match will be played at the same venue on Sunday, March 22.

Australia thrash Oman to end dismal T20 World Cup

Captain Mitchell Marsh crashed a belligerent 64 off 33 balls as Australia finished their dismal T20 World Cup with a nine-wicket romp past Oman in Kandy on Friday.

Marsh reached his fifty inside the six-over power play and hit four sixes and seven fours in all as Australia, having bowled out Oman for 104, raced to 108-1 with more than 10 overs to spare.

Fellow opener Travis Head made 32 and Josh Inglis 12 not out but the win against a 20th-ranked Oman side will be scant consolation after a chaotic campaign in Sri Lanka.

A depleted Australia failed to make the second phase for only the second time in the event’s history after defeats to Zimbabwe and co-hosts Sri Lanka.

“As I’ve said a few times, it’s a bitterly disappointed change room,” said Marsh.

“Like every team, we built towards this for two years. Unfortunately, in a couple of key games, we just didn’t play our best cricket.”

Australia arrived after being drubbed 3-0 in Pakistan and without injured fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

They then lost Marsh for the first two games after he was hit during practice and suffered testicular bleeding.

Australia’s acerbic media did not hold back in their criticism after their fate was sealed when Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland was washed out on Tuesday, citing selection “stuff-ups”.

Chief among those was sticking with the woefully out-of-form Cameron Green and promoting Tim David to number four as a “power hitter” when he had not played since December because of a hamstring injury.

Glenn Maxwell, so often a match-winner with the bat in the past, struggled for runs and the Australians dearly missed the experience of Cummins and Hazlewood.

Matt Renshaw was Australia’s top run scorer in the first two group matches, but he was bewilderingly dropped for the must-win Sri Lanka clash on Monday.

After Marsh won the toss and opted to bowl, Australia’s Xavier Bartlett took a wicket with the first ball of the Oman innings, bowling Aamir Kaleem.

Bartlett took 2-27 and Adam Zampa 4-21 as Oman were routed for 104 in 16.2 overs with Wasim Ali top scoring on 32.

“It’s been a really tough few days. There are some pretty quiet voices around the group right now,” said Zampa, who was named player of the match.

“We’re feeling flat about the World Cup ending so early for us

“I’m pretty disappointed overall. I’m certainly not ready to be flying home tomorrow.”

Mike Hesson clarifies video of heated exchange with Agha

COLOMBO: Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has clarified a video that appeared to show a heated exchange with captain Salman Ali Agha, stating that the situation was misunderstood.

On February 18, Hesson appeared to be engaged in a heated exchange with Salman Ali Agha during Pakistan’s clash against Namibia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The video, widely circulated online, showed Agha throwing his bottle to the ground in anger.

The visuals soon caught the attention of fans on social media, with various speculations about the conversation between them.

Speaking ahead of the New Zealand clash, Hesson explained that the situation had been misunderstood, noting that he had approached Salman Ali Agha to ask Nawaz to put on his pads.

“I’ve seen the video that was sent to me, and you’ve got it completely wrong. Let me explain what actually happened. I was walking over to speak to Salman and to ask Nawaz to put his pads on as a left-hander,” he told reporters in the pre-match press conference.

“Agha had just gotten out and was understandably upset, so he threw his bottle to the ground. It had nothing to do with the conversation we were having,” he added.

The coach further said that it was just a simple discussion, and Agha was not involved at all.

“Once the left-arm spinner had finished his over, we discussed Shadab getting his pads on to come in. It was a very straightforward conversation, and Agha wasn’t even part of it,” he continued.

He was simply disappointed about his dismissal and happened to be nearby. It’s remarkable how easily situations can be misinterpreted,” Hesson concluded.

The 2009 champions are scheduled to play New Zealand tomorrow and England on February 24 before taking on hosts Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight encounter on Feb 28.

Zadran, Nabi help Afghanistan end T20 World Cup on high

Opener Ibrahim Zadran struck an unbeaten 95 to help Afghanistan to a crushing 82-run win over Canada on Thursday and cap off an otherwise disappointing T20 World Cup on a high.

Zadran hit seven fours and five sixes in his 56-ball knock to steer Afghanistan to 200-4 after being invited to bat first in Chennai.

Afghanistan bowlers led by veteran spinner Mohammad Nabi, with his T20 best figures of 4-7, kept Canada down to 118-8 for their second win in the 20-team tournament.

2024 semi-finalists Afghanistan failed to reach the Super Eights stage after New Zealand secured the other qualification spot from Group D, which was topped by South Africa.

“We were well prepared for this competition, we were very close,” said Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan.

“The game against South Africa (lost in a double super over) put us on the back foot and that hurt us.”

The Afghans put up a dominant show in their last group match with Zadran leading the batting with his half-century and a 95-run third-wicket stand with Sediqullah Atal, who made 44.

It was the last match for former England batter Jonathan Trott as coach of Afghanistan after he took over the job in July 2022.

Canada were never in the chase and ended the tournament without a win in four matches.
