Tilak, Kuldeep star as India defeat Pakistan to clinch Asia Cup 2025

DUBAI: Tilak Verma’s crafty knock and Kuldeep Yadav’s magic with the ball helped India seal victory against Pakistan in a last-over thriller in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 final here on Sunday.

Set 147, India chased down the target on the fourth ball of the last over, losing five wickets in the process.

Pakistan pacers ripped through India’s top order as Faheem Ashraf and Shaheen Afridi combined to rattle the defending champions.

Dangerous Abhishek Sharma was the first to go holing out to mid on, whereas Skipper Suryakumar Yadav, in poor form, perished courtesy of an excellent catch from Salman Ali Agha.

The Men in Blue were pegged back with Shubman Gill’s wicket, who was caught on mid-on after scoring 12. As a result, India were reduced to 20-3.

However, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma arrested the slide and batted with calm and composure. The pair added 58 runs for the third wicket, which put India back on course in the chase.

Varma particularly nudged the balls for a single and eased pressure. Samson, on the other hand, was looking good. He got a reprieve in the ninth over as Hussain Talat dropped a sitter.

Yet, he departed after making 24 from 21 balls with the help of two fours and a six. At this stage, India were 77-4 in 12.4 overs.

The game was evenly poised at this stage, with India requiring 69 from 42 balls. However, Tilak Varma’s presence at the crease and some sloppy fielding and tactical errors from Pakistan put India on top.

Haris Rauf’s 17 yielded 17 runs from the 15th over, which tilted the game in India’s favor.

Eventually, India aced the chase with Rinku Singh— playing his first game of the tournament, hitting the ball over mid wicket for four to seal an emphatic win for his side.

For Pakistan, Faheem Ashraf picked up three wickets.

Earlier, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman provided a strong start, but the innings unraveled once again as a familiar middle-order collapse led to Pakistan’s innings being folded for a modest total.

Put into bat first, Pakistan could not capitalize on a strong start as their innings folded on a mere 146-run total in  19.1 overs.

Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman started strong with an 84-run stand. The duo batted cautiously and ended the powerplay on a strong note with Pakistan 45-0.

Sahizbada remained the core aggressor and reached his half-century off 35 balls while Fakhar played the second fiddle.

The partnership eventually culminated with Farhan’s wicket, who made 57 from 38 balls, striking three sixes and five fours.

Yet, Pakistan were in a strong position to score a strong total with Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman adding 29 runs to the total. However, the former wicket on the fifth ball sparked a collapse that the Green Shirts could not recover from.

Saim perished to Kuldeep, managing 14 from 10, whereas Axar Patel ended Mohammad Haris ‘ two-ball stay at the crease. The wicket-keeper could not open his account.

In the next over, Fakhar tried to charge after hitting Varun Chakravarthy for a six and ended up losing his wicket. The soutpaw scored 46 from 35 with the aid of two sixes and two fours.

As a result, Pakistan slumped to 126-4. The situation was still manageable for Pakistan to post a good score with skipper Salman Ali Agha ( 8) and Hussain Talat (1) at the crease. However, Kuldeep Yadav picked three wickets in an over, which bundled them out for a modest total.

For India, Kuldeep Yadav picked up a four-wicket haul, whereas Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy picked up two wickets each.

Pakistan’s likely Playing XI for Asia Cup 2025 final revealed

DUBAI: Pakistan cricket team is likely to retain a settled playing XI as they prepare for the high-stakes Asia Cup 2025 final against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The management is unlikely to tinker with the line-up that delivered wins in the Super Four stage against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Sources confirm there is little chance of recalling young batter Hasan Nawaz, who was dropped after the earlier clash with India.

In positive news, pacer Haris Rauf has regained full fitness and is available for selection in the title decider.

India, meanwhile, are expected to strengthen their side by recalling Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube. Both missed the last Super Four match against Sri Lanka, with Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana likely to make way.

The much-anticipated showdown will mark the first-ever Asia Cup final between the arch-rivals in the tournament’s 41-year history. Since its inception in 1984, the continental event has witnessed 15 finals, but never a Pakistan–India title clash.

Asia Cup 2025: Nissanka ton in vain as India edge Sri Lanka in Super Over

Defending champions India survived a scintillating century by Pathum Nissanka to edge out Sri Lanka in a Super Over after their Asia Cup match ended in a tie on Friday.

India, who had already booked their place in the final against Pakistan, posted an impressive 202-5.

In reply, however, Nissanka hammered 107 off 58 balls to lead Sri Lanka’s chase which also ended on 202-5 in the last Super Four contest of the regional tournament in Dubai.

Sri Lanka managed just two runs from their Super Over, which was bowled by Arshdeep Singh.

Kusal Perera sliced the first ball to deep point, and Dasun Shanaka’s dismissal from the fifth ball marked the end of the innings.

It took India skipper Suryakumar Yadav just one ball to settle the match, which meant his side remained unbeaten in six matches ahead of the final against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday at the same venue.

Nissanka stood out with his first T20 century, laced with seven fours and six sixes, and his 127-run second-wicket partnership with left-hander Perera, who made 58.

Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy broke the stand with the wicket of Perera as slow bowlers got India back into the game.

With 12 to get off the last over, Harshit Rana dismissed Nissanka on the first ball and restricted Sri Lanka to 11, sending the match into a Super Over.

Put in to bat, India posted a challenging total after opener Abhishek Sharma hit 61 off 31 balls.

The left-handed Abhishek set the tone with a 59-run second-wicket stand with Suryakumar, who fell after a scratchy 12.

Abhishek, who has a strike-rate of over 200 in the regional tournament, reached his third successive fifty with two straight boundaries to take the attack to the opposition.

Skipper Charith Asalanka cut short Abhishek’s blitz before Tilak Varma and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson put on 66 for the fourth wicket.

India lost two more wickets, including Samson for 39, but Varma, who hit 49, and fellow left-hander Axar Patel, with 21, steered the team past 200.

All-round Talat stars as Pakistan down Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2025

ABU DHABI: Hussain Talat stood tall with bat and ball to script a crucial win for Pakistan over Sri Lanka in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 Super Fours here at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Green Shirts chased down the target in 18 overs, losing five wickets in the process.

The openers were off to a flyer, piling up 45 runs in 5.3 overs. However, Sri Lanka made a strong comeback in the fifth over, removing both openers to dent Pakistan’s progress.

Maheesh Theekshan struck twice, first removing dangerous Sahibzada Farhan and then Fakhar Zaman, to put Sri Lanka back into the game.

Sahibzada departed after scoring 24 from 15 balls, striking two sixes and a boundary, while Fakhar made 17 from 19 with the aid of two fours.

The wickets gave the Islanders an opening, and they further jolted Pakistan with quick wickets. Saim Ayub’s poor form continued as he was castled for two while Salman Ali Agha perished soon after, adding only five to the total.

Mohammad Haris was also cleaned up by Dushmanta Chameera for 13 after a brief partnership of 23 runs with Hussain Talat. As a result, Pakistan were reduced to 80-5 in 11.1 overs.

Yet, Pakistan emerged victorious, and it was all due to Hussain Talat’s calm and composed innings. The left-hander forged a decisive 58-run stand with Mohammad Nawaz, who also chipped in at the end to take Pakistan home.

Hussain made 32* from 30 balls, striking four boundaries, whereas Nawaz struck back-to-back sixes to take his runs tally to 38*. He hit three fours and three sixes in his impressive knock.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana took two wickets each.

Earlier, Shaheen Afridi’s impressive three-wicket haul restricted Sri Lanka to 133-8 in their 20 overs.

The Islanders were jolted early, with Shaheen Afridi removing both openers. Kusal Mendis fell for nought on the second ball of the first over, whereas in-form Pathum Nissanka was caught behind in the third over.

As a result, Sri Lanka slipped to 18-2 in 2.2 overs. However, the batters tried to counterattack, accumulating some vital runs.

Kusal Perera and skipper Charith Asalanka added 25 from 19 on the third wicket before the former was caught off Haris Rauf’s bowling in the fifth over. The left-hander managed to score 15 from 12 balls.

Despite scoring quickly, the eight over from medium pacer Hussain Talat was the cherry on top for Pakistan. Talat, bowling his first over of the tournament, removed Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka on back-to-back deliveries, which slumped them to 58-5.

The wickets sparked a mini collapse and dragged the run-rate down, though Kamindu Mendis fought back with anchoring a half-century to lift his team out of trouble.

The left-hander made 50 from 44 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes.

For Pakistan, it was an all-round performance with Shaheen Afridi leading the attack and picking up three wickets in his quota of four overs. Hussain Talat and Haris Rauf were equally good, scalping two apiece.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka Fight for Asia Cup 2025 Survival

Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the wounded Shaheens and the wounded Lions respectively, are set to lock horns today in Abu Dhabi in what is shaping up to be a virtual knockout in the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four.

Both sides arrive licking fresh wounds, Pakistan from a crushing defeat to India, and Sri Lanka from being outplayed by Bangladesh.

Another loss here will all but end the loser’s journey. Yes, a mathematical chance might still linger, but realistically, survival demands nothing less than victory.

For Pakistan, the scars of Sunday’s loss to their arch-rivals are raw. Their batting order crumbled, their self-belief dipped, and the questions around their firepower grew louder.

Sri Lanka, too, face their own crisis of confidence after faltering against a spirited Bangladesh. Both teams are not just fighting for progression; they are battling for pride.

Pakistan are likely to bring back middle-order batter Hassan Nawaz to the Playing XI, while Sri Lanka might be considering bringing spinner Maheesh Theekshana to challenge Pakistan’s already struggling batting line-up.

Notably, Pakistan have a slight edge historically, winning 13 games, while Sri Lanka managed 10 victories.

However, Sri Lanka have won the last five T20Is against Pakistan since October 2019.

Individually, the openers from both sides are in the spotlight. Pathum Nissanka and Sahibzada Farhan are the tournament’s second and third-highest run-scorers so far, while Kusal Mendis sits fifth.

On the bowling front, Wanindu Hasaranga looms as Pakistan’s biggest headache. His record against them is devastating: 14 wickets in just five games at an average of 9.07. Pakistan’s well-documented struggles against quality wrist spin only magnify his threat.

Abrar Ahmed offers Pakistan their own spin option, but against Sri Lanka, a side raised on turning tracks, the real damage must come from Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf with the new ball.

Then there is the matter of Pakistan’s batting order. Against India, the constant chopping and changing backfired spectacularly. T20I is often a game of controlled chaos, but there must be a method to the madness.

Without clarity and intent at the crease, Pakistan might as well start packing their bags for an early flight home.

Six-star Sandhu seals consolatory win for Pakistan over South Africa

LAHORE: Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu’s six-wicket haul, followed by a composed half-century from Sidra Amin, sealed a consolatory win for Pakistan women against South Africa women in the final ODI of the three-match series here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

Despite a dominant win, South Africa clinched the series 2-1 ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, set to begin at the end of this month.

Pakistan chased down the 116-run target on the loss of four wickets with 114 balls remaining. The girls in Green cruised to victory without any major hiccups, with Sidra Amin continuing her rich vein of form.

After losing the opener Omaima Sohail for a nought in the second over, Sidra Amin and Muneeba Ali paired up for a 65-run stand, which steadied Pakistan in the chase.

The stand culminated in the 22nd over as Muneeba departed for a well-made 44 from 76 balls, laced with six boundaries. South Africa struck again on the third ball of the over, removing skipper Fatima Sana for a duck, which reduced Pakistan to 66-3.

Yet, Sidra held firm and kept the score ticking alongside Natalia Pervaiz, who made 14 from 10 balls.

The home side eventually got to target with Sidra Amin hitting the winning runs with a boundary. Sidra top-scored with 50* off 94 deliveries, studded with eight fours, whereas Eyman Fatima remained not out on three.

For South Africa, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Nadine de Klerk picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, South Africa could not capitalize on the decision and were bundled out for 115 in just 25.5 overs.

The openers started firmly with a 38-run partnership. However, Diana Baig removed the skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, who top-scored with 28 off 23 balls.

Sune Luus and Karabo Meso were also sent back in successive overs, which reduced South Africa to 59-3 in 9.1 overs. The visitors were in further dire straits once Nashra Sandhu came in to bowl.

The 27-year-old tore through South Africa’s middle-order with outstanding bowling and took a fifer in no time. Due to her spell, South Africa were reeling on 94-8 at the end of the 21st over.

With a dominant display from Pakistan, it was only a matter of time before the Proteas were bowled out, with Syed Aroob Shah removing the last two batters.

Nashra Sandhu remained the standout bowler, picking up six wickets for 26 runs in nine overs.
