Tanzania stun France to claim maiden win in FIFA U-17 Women’s WC

MARGAO: Tanzania stunned France 2-1 in the Group D fixture of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and registered their first victory in the mega event.

Tanzania, fresh from their disappointing 0-4 loss to Japan in their debut game, entered the field and displayed utter domination over their opposition.

Diana William Mnaly then soon converted her side’s domination into a goal in the 17th minute as she guided Aisha Juma Mnunka’s cross with a well-directed strike to hand her side an early 1-0 lead.

Assa Sidibé then botched a regulation header into handball which led the referee to award another penalty kick to Tanzania after VAR.

Having already failed to convert a penalty into a goal, Tanzania’s defender Christer Joh Bahera fired the ball cautiously into the top of the post and put her side into a commanding 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.

France then got a vital opportunity to quickly cut Tanzania’s lead to 2-1 as Lucie Calba made no mistake in converting the penalty into her side’s first goal.

Tanzania’s defence did tremendously well to keep France at bay for the rest of the game and blocked multiple attempts from the French side for an equalizer as the former side ran away with an astonishing 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, in the Group C fixture, Colombia humbled China 2-0 after coming from a frustrating 0-1 loss to defending champions Spain.

Colombia’s Linda Caicedo stole the show for her side as she netted twice in the ninth and 23rd minute respectively to propel her side to a much-needed victory in the mega event.

The action-filled tournament is being telecasted live on Pakistan’s first HD Sports channel – A Sports and is simultaneously streamed on the digital platform of ARY Digital Network – ARY ZAP in crystal clear HD quality.

Pakistan Women’s team features in FIFA Rankings after six years

ZURICH: The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) reinstated Pakistan’s women’s team to the FIFA rankings table on Monday, after a six-year absence.

Following their reinstation in the rankings table, the green shirts occupied the 160th rank with a total of 928.4 points.

It is worth mentioning here that the SAFF Women’s Championship 2022 marked the first tournament in which Pakistan was taking part after FIFA lifted the ban on the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) on June 29.

Soria saves penalty in Getafe-Rayo Vallecano derby draw

MADRID: Getafe goalkeeper David Soria denied a penalty and bolstered his side to hang on for a draw against city rivals Ray Vallecano 0-0 in the ongoing La Liga 2022-23.

Rayo dominated possession but came no closer to scoring than Oscar Trejo’s penalty kick in the 53rd minute following a handball in the area by Fabrizio Angileri.

However, Soria stood tall and blocked the kick, keeping the scoreboard blank.

In the 71st minute, Rayo substitute Radamel Falcao saw a goal ruled out for offside by VAR.

The goalless draw in the Madrid derby left Rayo in 10th place, while Getafe inched into 14th place with just three points behind Rayo.

Rayo will play another derby away at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, while Getafe will host Athletic Club on October 18 at the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

India lose to Morocco 3-0, crash out of FIFA U-17 Women’s WC

BHUBANESHWAR: Hosts India endured a second consecutive defeat in the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as Morocco triumphed 3-0 to shatter the home side’s hopes in front of a silent crowd.

Coming out from a hammering 0-8 loss to the United States of America (USA), the girls in blue suffered another setback, which forced them to crash out of the mega event.

India displayed brilliant grit and did well in the first half to keep the scorecard intact as none of the sides was able to score a goal.

Morocco took the field in the second half with great dedication and soon got the reward in terms of a penalty after the ball struck Naketa’s arm.

Doha El Madani subsequently converted the penalty and put her team ahead, despite India’s goalkeeper Melody Chanu diving the right way.

Chanu then spilled the ball 10 minutes later, allowing Yasmine Zouhir to net a regulation goal to enhance her side’s lead to 2-0.

Djennah Cherif then received a brilliant pass in the stoppage time which she fired past Melody; rustling in the net.

Following two consecutive defeats, the hosts India crashed out of the mega event. The girls in blue will take on Brazil in their last group match on October 17.

Meanwhile, in the Group B fixture, Germany hammered Chile 6-0 to extend their domination and secured a quarter-final berth.

Jella Veit opened the scoring for her side in the 20th minute, while Alara Sehitler scored the second goal in the 24th. Mara Alber then struck the third goal in the 40th minute and put her side in utter command at the conclusion of the first half.

The side then continued their domination over Chile as Marie Steiner took just 10 minutes to net the goal in the second half and made it 4-0 for Germany, while Loreen Bender struck the fifth goal a couple of minutes later.

Laila Portella decimated the Chile defence in the stoppage time and dribbled past their defenders and goalkeeper to net a convincing goal, which marked the end of Germany’s one-sided show over Chile.

Nigeria thrash New Zealand to claim first win in FIFA U-17 Women’s WC

GOA: Nigeria displayed utter domination in their second fixture of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as they thwarted New Zealand 4-0 to register their maiden triumph of the mega event.

Nigeria, fresh from their disappointing 2-1 loss to Germany, entered the field and displayed utter domination over their opposition.

Omowunmi Bello then soon converted her side’s domination into a goal in the 16th minute as she guided Tunmininu Adeshina’s cross with a powerful header to hand her side an early 1-0 lead.

Miracle Usani fired a fairly harmless cross into Fern’s goal area, however, confusion between Feinberg-Danieli and Manaia Elliot resulted in the defender deflecting the ball past the keeper’s expected reach.

Usani, as a result, cherished her second goal of the mega event.

Nigeria maintained their dominance over New Zealand in the second half, repeatedly testing their defence as Ajakaye and Adeshina hit the crossbar and side-netting, respectively.

However, Taiwo Afolabi was unstoppable in the 75th minute. Her 25-yard piledriver whistled beyond Feinberg Danieli’s jump and crashed into the net to enhance Nigeria’s lead.

Edidiong Etim’s trike in the stoppage time proved to be a cherry on top for Nigeria, who finished their domination over New Zealand with a comprehensive 4-0 triumph.

Meanwhile, the Group A fixture between Brazil and the United States of America (USA) ended in a 1-1 draw.

Brazil’s Ana Firmino struck in the 37th minute to neutralize USA’s Nicollette Kiorpes’ 33rd-minute strike and prevented her side from the first defeat.

Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ ball to go up for auction

LONDON: The ball that Diego Maradona used to score his infamous “Hand of God” World Cup goal for Argentina against England in 1986 will go under the hammer next month and could fetch up to £3 million.

Bidding will start on November 16 but prospective buyers can register online from October 28, London-based Graham Budd Auctions said, adding it anticipates the ball to sell for £2.5-£3 million (up to $3.4 million).

“With the history surrounding the ball, we are expecting this lot to be hugely popular when it comes up for auction,” Graham Budd, chair of the auction house, said in a statement.

The 1986 quarter-final between Argentina and England saw a heated build-up because of political tensions following the Falklands war and came to be defined by two contrasting goals scored by the late Maradona.

For the first one, Maradona ran into the box, rose with England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and punched the ball into the net.

He later said the goal had been scored “a little with the head of Maradona, a little with the hand of God”.

The second came just four minutes later as Maradona sped past five English defenders and Shilton to score the “Goal of the Century”, according to a 2002 FIFA poll.

Argentina won the grudge match 2-1 after referee Ali Bin Nasser let Maradona’s controversial first goal stand, and the team went on to win the World Cup.

“This ball is part of international football history, it feels like the right time to be sharing it with the world,” said Bin Nasser, the owner of the ball.

In May, the jersey Maradona wore in the quarter-final sold at auction for nearly $9.3 million, more than twice the value predicted by Sotheby’s.

But the record-setting sale for sports memorabilia worn on the field was surpassed in September when basketball legend Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA finals jersey sold for $10.1 million.

Maradona died aged 60 of heart failure in November 2020.

Pakistan football team to play an international match after 2019

LAHORE: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) on Friday confirmed that the national men’s football team will be touring Nepal for friendly matches in November this year.

According to the details, the squad for the Nepal tour will be announced in due course. The tour will mark Pakistan’s first international match after FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in 2019.

36 national players were distilled down based on their skills and fitness. The shortlisted footballers trained here for six weeks.

The PFF, however, has called the players on November 3 for the second phase.

Speaking on the occasion, the head coach of the national men’s football team, Shahzad Anwar, asserted that the shortlisted players are working hard to acclimate to the international standards by giving training their all from day one.

“Each footballer’s data has also been compiled using advanced technology. The players have also benefited from the experience of Brazilian physical trainer Rodrigo Estevez and goalkeeping coach Marcelo Costa,” he said.

“FIFA’s designated normalization committee is providing all possible facilities. Everyone is eagerly waiting for the international matches,” he added.

Salah nets fastest Champions League hat-trick as Liverpool crush Rangers

GLASGOW: Jurgen Klopp said the mood around Liverpool had been lifted after Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history in a 7-1 demolition of Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday.

The Reds had won just four of their first 11 games of the season and fell behind for the eighth time this campaign when Scott Arfield fired the Glasgow giants into an early lead.

But Rangers are being schooled on their return to the Champions League for the first time in 12 years as they crumbled to a record-equalling European defeat in the second half.

The Glasgow giants remain without a point and have conceded 16 goals in four games.

“The first half and the last half an hour was night and day,” said Van Bronckhorst. “I cannot explain it.

“The performance was not the way we want to represent this club.”

Roberto Firmino’s double on either side of half-time turned the game around before the Brazilian teed up Darwin Nunez to kill off the contest.

Klopp had left Salah, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota on the bench with one eye on Sunday’s clash against Manchester City in the Premier League.

But they were brought on in the final quarter and Salah did not miss the chance to cash in against a beleaguered Rangers defence.

The Egyptian’s treble arrived in just six minutes and 12 seconds to beat the previous record held by Bafetimbi Gomis in Lyon’s 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb in 2011.

“It changes the mood definitely, and that’s good,” said Klopp. “We all know who is coming on Sunday. That will be different, but it’s better to go in with the feeling from tonight.

“When we play to our potential we’re a pretty good football team. That’s what we showed tonight.”

Harvey Elliott rounded off the scoring on a sobering night for a Rangers side that only months ago reached the Europa League final.

A draw in Amsterdam will suffice for Liverpool to reach the last 16 when they face Ajax in two weeks’ time.

But Napoli remain out in front in Group A after a 4-2 win over Ajax sealed their place in the knockout stages.

Lewandowski saves drowning Barca in thrilling Inter draw

BARCELONA: Robert Lewandowski scored two late goals to save Barcelona from elimination in the Champions League in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Inter Milan on Wednesday at Camp Nou.

The Polish forward dragged Xavi Hernandez’s side level at 2-2 in the 82nd minute and then again at 3-3 in stoppage time with a towering header, after Robin Gosens put the Italians ahead with one minute remaining.

Barcelona’s Champions League fate is no longer in their own hands though and they still face a second consecutive group stage elimination if Inter Milan win at home against eliminated Viktoria Plzen on October 26.

Being on the verge of another early knock-out is a bitter blow for the Catalans, who hoped a summer signing spree including Lewandowski from Bayern Munich could restore their position among Europe’s elite.

“They were our errors tonight, we had the game in our hands, we had it in Munich, we had it in Milan and we had it here today,” bemoaned Xavi.

“We’re depending on another team to go through. They are our mistakes, we have to improve them. That’s the reality. The (improvement) process is longer than we thought in Europe.

“There are other competitions, La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Super Copa. We have to insist, persist, believe.”

The hosts made the early running but Lautaro Martinez flashed a warning shot into the side-netting on the counter attack, with Inter sitting deep but ready to spring forward.

Lewandowski, in search of his first goal in three games, had a header cleared off the line and at the other end Edin Dzeko hit the crossbar.

Raphinha was frustrated after skewing a volley wide but his work-rate proved crucial when Barcelona broke the deadlock. The Brazilian winger chased a ball down in the corner and fed Sergi Roberto, who cut the ball across for Dembele to blast home from close range.

Inter stewed on the goal at half-time and quickly produced one of their own, netting in the 50th minute after Gerard Pique played Nicolo Barella onside and the Italian rifled home.

The Inter midfielder snuck behind Pique, who waved a cross past him, towards Ter Stegen, not reading Barella’s movement.

The defender, 35, was starting his first Champions League game of the season, with Barcelona paying the price for Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen’s injuries.

“They didn’t come out switched-on enough in the second half, that is a coaching error,” said Xavi.

“When you draw at home with these fans, with this atmosphere, it is my fault. I am angry. My feeling is that this competition has been, and is still being, cruel with us.”

It was another of the team’s veterans who gave the ball away for Inter’s second goal, with Sergio Busquets conceding possession with a stray pass. Hakan Calhanoglu found Martinez, and the Argentine striker left Eric Garcia for dead and slammed home via the post.

“We made errors that at this level, you cannot make,” admitted Garcia.

Eventually Lewandowski got his goal with a deflected strike at the second attempt after substitute Alejandro Balde found him in the area.

Gosens thought he had handed Inter qualification and eliminated Barca when he struck late on from Martinez’s cross, on yet another counter-attack, but Lewandowski had other ideas.

The striker’s towering header saved Barcelona from certain elimination, but their future in the competition still hangs by a fraying thread.

“I think that Barca are a very great team with a great coach. The problem is that Barca met an Inter in these games, an Inter at the right level, organised, determined,” said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi.

“In the second half we played well and we deserved to win the game. We created many chances, we hit the bar, there were some very big saves.”

There is little time for Barcelona to pick themselves up and dust themselves down. On Sunday, Real Madrid beckon at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga.

Japan thrash Tanzania, Spain edge Colombia in FIFA U-17 Women’s WC

INDIA: Tanzania were off to a dismal start to their maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign as they went down 4-0 against Japan while defending champions Spain edged past Colombia 1-0 on matchday one of the mega event.

Tanzania, making their FIFA U-17 debut, suffered a crushing 0-4 defeat at the hands of tournament favourites Japan as the latter displayed utter domination for the majority of the match.

Japanese midfielder Uno Shiragaki opened the scoring for her side as she netted the first goal of the match in the 37th minute to hand her side an early 1-0 lead.

Both sides made several attempts to alter the scoreboard but goalkeepers displayed astonishing grit to keep it intact.

A series of substitutions from both teams then accelerated the game as Mao Itamura, who replaced Miyu Matsunaga in the 64th minute, took just three more to make her presence felt and powered Japan to a 2-0 lead.

Itamura then passed the ball to Ai Tsujisawa, who blasted it into the net with her second touch to make it 3-0.

A well-directed freekick from Momoko Tanikawa just outside the Tanzanian box turned out to be a cherry on top for Japan.

Meanwhile, Tanzania failed to net a single goal in the one-sided clash.

Defending champions Spain, on the other hand, sank Colombia as a late strike from Jone Martinez – five minutes prior to the 90-minute mark – bolstered the side to claim their first points in the mega event.

China, who thrashed Mexico 2-1 earlier on the second day, lead the Group C standings with two goals, while Spain claimed the second spot.

The action-filled tournament is being telecasted live on Pakistan’s first HD Sports channel – A Sports and is simultaneously streamed on the digital platform of ARY Digital Network – ARY ZAP in crystal clear HD quality.
