Ronaldo bruised after brutal collision in Portugal match

PRAGUE: Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo was left covered in blood after a nasty collision with Czech Republic goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik on Saturday night.

The Manchester United forward went down in a heap after the mid-air collision in the 13th minute of the Nations League clash.

He was left bloodied, bruised and dazed on the turf.

Portugal stormed to a 4-0 win over the Czech Republic in its Nations League A-Group 2 match thanks to a Diego Dalot double and strikes by Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota.

The victory sets up a crunch clash for the Portuguese on Tuesday at home to Spain, which lost 2-1 to visitors Switzerland, knowing a draw will be enough to reach the final four.

Portugal leads the group on 10 points ahead of Spain on eight after five matches with one game left to play.

Ronaldo required medical treatment on the pitch but later returned with a bandage on his nose.

Swiss find holes in Spain defence in Nations League upset

ZARAGOZA: Switzerland earned a 2-1 win over Spain in the Nations League on Saturday in Zaragoza to drag Luis Enrique’s side off top spot in the group.

Portugal thrashed the Czech Republic 4-0 in the other League A Group 2 clash to move two points clear of Spain, whom they host on Tuesday in the final group match.

It was Spain’s first defeat in the group in five games, and one which exposed their defensive frailty from set-pieces.

Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo both scored from Switzerland corners, either side of Jordi Alba’s strike.

“In two set-piece situations, which will be important at the World Cup, their goals arrived,” said Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

“We have to improve on that.”

Spain never looked comfortable in the game, a far cry from the team which reached the Euro 2020 semi-finals and were defeated on penalties by Italy.

As a result, they stumbled to their first loss on home soil since 2018, after 22 matches unbeaten.

Luis Enrique selected six Barcelona players in his starting line-up, including the regular midfield trio Xavi Hernandez utilises at Camp Nou, in Pedri, Gavi and Sergio Busquets.

Ferran Torres was another of the Barca clan, part of a three-pronged attack alongside Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio and Paris Saint-Germain’s Pablo Sarabia.

None of the three have enjoyed regular football with their clubs this season but were given Luis Enrique’s trust.

They did not repay it in the first half, with Spain anaemic in attack and asleep at the back when it mattered most.

“We were sluggish, no, worse than sluggish,” said Luis Enrique.

“We had the most imprecise first half of my reign as coach.

“(However) this defeat does not condition anything ahead of the World Cup, at all. It’s always good to arrive in form to a World Cup, but I have total faith in the team.”

Switzerland took the lead when Manchester City summer signing Akanji got the better of Cesar Azpilicueta in the air at a corner and nodded past Unai Simon in the 21st minute.

Spain struggled to create at the other end and Switzerland almost doubled their lead when veteran midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri cut through the defence and forced Simon into a smart save shortly before the interval.

The crowd grumbled, unimpressed at a drenched La Romareda stadium, in a city where Spain had not played since 2003.

Asensio had them out of their seats early in the second half when he created the Spain equaliser with an electric burst forward, before playing in Alba to finish clinically.

However, three minutes later Spain defended another corner poorly and Akanji’s flick-on was nudged over the line by Embolo to restore the Swiss lead.

Defending set-plays was a serious issue for La Roja at Euro 2020 and it clearly remains one as the World Cup approaches.

Luis Enrique replaced his entire forward line, with debutant Borja Iglesias drawing huge applause at his former hunting ground, while Nico Williams also earned his first cap, a day after his older brother Inaki Williams made his debut for Ghana.

Athletic Bilbao forward Williams almost forced the equaliser when his cross was turned towards his own goal by Silvan Widmer, but Yann Sommer reacted quickly to keep the ball out.

The goalkeeper produced another solid save, punching away substitute Marcos Llorente’s fierce drive as Spain began to threaten more.

Villarreal winger Yeremy Pino was bright on the right flank but even his spark fizzled out in the rain, and Sommer stayed alert until the end to deny Carlos Soler.

Luis Enrique’s side, the 2021 Nations League runners-up, must now overcome Portugal in Braga to reach next year’s finals.

“We have to beat Portugal now and make it to the final four,” said Spain’s goalscorer Alba, who has dropped behind Alejandro Balde and Marcos Alonso in the pecking order at Barcelona.

“I am grateful to the coach for keeping his confidence in me, and I just have to show that on the pitch.”

Brazilian footballer Kaka to make marathon debut in Berlin

BERLIN: Former World Cup-winning footballer Kaka will make his debut at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, saying he was “just as excited as I used to be before football matches.”

Kaka, who played for Real Madrid and AC Milan before retiring in 2017, said his father’s struggle with Covid-19 had inspired him to run the marathon.

“He was 45 days in hospital” Kaka said at the Berlin marathon press conference on Friday.

“Fortunately, he is with us today.”

Kaka’s father and brother will take part in the “family experience” of the marathon.

“He’s not going to run, he’s just walking, but we wanted him in this experience with us – it’s more of a family experience.”

Kaka said marathons were particularly special as sporting events because amateurs can take part side-by-side with professionals.

“I’m very excited… Of course, it’s completely different than those guys (pointing to the professionals), this is something that is really good in marathons.

“As an amateur athlete, I can run and be in the same field as the professionals.

“This is something really special in marathons – afterwards I can say that the best one in the marathon ran this time, and at the same time I was running with him.”

Kaka said he was hoping for a time under four hours.

“I want to run around 3 hours 40 minutes – if I feel good maybe I can do more,” added the 2002 World Cup winner.

Lewandowski’s brace powers Barcelona to sink Elche 3-0 in LaLiga

BARCELONA: Robert Lewandowski netted the ball twice, scoring 11 goals in nine games, to put Barcelona on the top of the standings in LaLiga 2022-23.

After a Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich, Polish star and Memphis Depay relieved the Catalan giants as they beat ten-men Elche 3-0 on Saturday in a home game.

The early sent-off of Gonzala Verdu in the 14th minute when he attempted to haul down  Lewandowski put Elche at a disadvantage and opened the floodgates.

Lewandowski hit the opening goal from close range in the 34th minute after an impressive cross from Alejandro Balde, who then assisted Depay four minutes before halftime for the second.

Lewandowski had his second early in the second half to steer Barca into a dominant position in a one-sided game.

Valencia, on the other hand, crushed Celta Vigo 3-0 in a home game thanks to the strikes by Samu Castillejo, Marcos Andre and Andre Almeida.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club edged past Rayo Vallecano after a dominant first-half play and jump to the third on the table.

VALLADOLID: Alvaro Negredo landed a late goal in the extra time to power Cadiz past Valladolid 1-0 to claim their maiden victory of the ongoing La Liga 2022-23.

The two teams remained indulged in a tense battle in both halves and could not be separated as the scoreboard remained intact at 0-0 at the 90-minute mark.

Former Manchester City striker Negredo then made the most of the assist from Joseba Zaldua and used his left foot to net the first goal for his side in the ongoing league.

A much-needed goal from Negredo lifted Cadiz to claim their first victory of the tournament after losing their first five matches by a combined score of 0-14.

Bayern beat Barcelona on Lewandowski return, Liverpool grab late winner

PARIS: Bayern Munich got the better of Barcelona as Robert Lewandowski returned to face his former club on Tuesday, while a late Joel Matip goal allowed Liverpool to beat Ajax and get their Champions League campaign up and running.

There was also a surprise defeat for Tottenham Hotspur at Sporting Lisbon, and Atletico Madrid were beaten on their trip to play Bayer Leverkusen.

Both Spanish visitors to Germany came away on the losing side, with Barcelona going down 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in Group C as Lewandowski came back to the club he left in the summer after eight prolific seasons in Bavaria.

The Pole scored a hat-trick on his Champions League debut for Barca as the Catalans beat Viktoria Plzen 5-1 last week.

He was desperately close to opening the scoring in the first half in Munich, but it was Bayern who went in front five minutes into the second half when Lucas Hernandez headed in from a corner.

Leroy Sane burst through four minutes later to make it 2-0 as Julian Nagelsmann’s Bayern made it two wins out of two in the group.

They have now won their last five meetings with Barcelona, including two in last season’s group stage and their 8-2 victory in the 2020 quarter-finals.

“I think for ‘Lewy’ it was really an emotional game to come back — a little bit like coming home, because he was so successful here,” Bayern captain Manuel Neuer told Amazon Prime of his old teammate.

“The luck in the decisive moments wasn’t on his side — and that became our luck.”

Barcelona next face Inter Milan, who got their first points with a 2-0 win away to Plzen in the Czech Republic.

Edin Dzeko and Denzel Dumfries got the goals for Inter while the home side had Pavel Bucha sent off in the second half.

Matip the hero

Liverpool got off to a disastrous start in Group A when they lost 4-1 to Napoli in Italy, but they bounced back from that to beat Ajax 2-1 at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah shook off a poor run of form to put Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead in the 17th minute, only for the Dutch champions to equalise before the half-hour courtesy of an emphatic finish from their thrilling Ghanaian talent Mohammed Kudus.

Liverpool were heading for a third game without a win in all competitions until Matip rose in front of the Kop to head in from a corner in the 89th minute, the ball crossing the line before it could be cleared out.

“I think everybody could see that we understood and that we had to put a completely different shift into the game. The boys did that,” Klopp told BT Sport.

“We played a lot of good stuff against a hard fighting opposition.”

That match was preceded by a minute’s silence to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The other game in Group A, between Rangers and Napoli, was postponed until Wednesday due to severe limitations on police resources in Scotland as a result of the Queen’s death.

Spurs Shocked

Meanwhile Antonio Conte’s Spurs slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Sporting in Portugal in Group D, with the home side scoring both goals late on at the Jose Alvalade stadium.

It looked like the English side would escape with a point after Hugo Lloris produced a stunning late save to deny Pedro Porro.

But Paulinho headed in from the resulting 90th-minute corner, and Brazilian Arthur Gomes came off the bench to make it 2-0 with a superb solo strike in injury time.

“It was a difficult result. When you lose the game you are not happy,” admitted Conte.

Sporting top the group with six points, while Eintracht Frankfurt joined Spurs on three points thanks to a 1-0 win in Marseille, with Jesper Lindstrom scoring in the first half.

Leverkusen claimed their first points in Group B as they beat Atletico 2-0 with two late goals, Robert Andrich and Moussa Diaby both finding the net.

Belgian champions Club Brugge top the section with six points after a stunning 4-0 win at FC Porto.

Former Barcelona striker Ferran Jutgla opened the scoring with a penalty before Kamal Sowah, Andreas Skov Olsen and Norwegian teenager Antonio Nusa all netted in the second half.
