PSL 8: Hasan, Sarfaraz demoted as PCB renews local player categories

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) renewed the local player categories for the eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), scheduled to commence on February 9, 2023.

Following renewal, the categories of some players have been upgraded which include Multan Sultans’ Shahnawaz Dahani and Shan Masood (both Gold to Diamond), Islamabad United’s Mohammad Wasim Junior (Gold to Diamond), Peshawar Zalmi’s Haider Ali and Mohammad Haris (Diamond to Platinum and Silver to Gold respectively), Quetta Gladiators’ Mohammad Nawaz and Naseem Shah (Diamond to Platinum and  Gold to Diamond respectively).

Whereas, United’s Hasan Ali and Zalmi’s Wahab Riaz, were both demoted from Platinum to Diamond category, while Gladiators’ Sarfaraz Ahmed was demoted from Platinum to Gold, Sultans’ Sohaib Maqsood and United’s Faheem Ashraf both demoted from Diamond to Gold.

The PCB has also opened the registration window for foreign players.

“The teams will now put forward relegation requests for the players before finalising retentions. After relegation requests are floated, all teams are given an opportunity to meet the player’s base category. If the player’s base category is not matched, the player may be relegated to a category below his base category,” the PCB said in a press release.

“U23 players cannot be part of a squad as an Emerging player for more than two years unless they have played nine or less matches in those two years.

“The player lists have been shared with the six franchises for the tournament to be played across four venues from 9 February to 19 March 2023.”

Babar Azam congratulates Lahore Qalandars for PSL 7 triumph

RAWALPINDI: 2020 Pakistan Super League (PSL) winning player and the current captain of Karachi Kings – Babar Azam congratulated Lahore Qalandars for winning the PSL 7.

Taking to Twitter, Babar congratulated the Qalandars for PSL 7 triumph, while also lauded the performance of both finalists – the Qalandars and Multan Sultans.

The top-ranked T20I batter further heaped praises to Shaheen Shah Afridi, for his brilliant performance as a captain of Qalandars and showed sympathy towards the runners-up finalist’s captain Multan Sultans – Mohammad Rizwan.

Babar then went on to thank the cricketing fans for making the PSL 7 a hit by their immense support throughout the tournament and filling the stadiums to cheer for their favorite teams.

It is apropos to mention here that the Qalandars won their maiden PSL title last night by defeating the defending champions Sultans by 42 runs in the final of the mega event.

‘PSL 7 profits jump highest in league’s history’ PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja

LAHORE: In an official statement, released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja revealed that the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earned the highest revenue in the league’s history.

According to the statement shared by the PCB, Ramiz revealed that the PSL 7 had the greatest revenue and viewership of any edition in the league’s history, as the seventh edition was the most successful.

“PSL 7 profits jumped to 71 percent, the most in its history, with each franchise earning around PKR900million, again the most in PSL’s history, and all before the first ball was even bowled,” Ramiz stated.

According to the statement, Ramiz further announced to expand the marquee event to the next level by hosting the matches in other cities as well.

“For next year, we aspire to take this league to the homes of all franchises and broaden its fan-reach,” he said.

Furthermore, Ramiz also thanked cricketing fans for their immense support and claimed he never witnessed such enthusiasts and lively crowds in my professional career.

“There is no doubt that the HBL Pakistan Super League 7 has been a phenomenal success and this is largely due to the fact that we had amazing crowds, both in Karachi and Lahore,” he quoted saying.

“In my professional career, I have never seen such charged up, overwhelming, enthusiastic, lively, and supportive crowds, particularly in Lahore,” he added.

Ramiz then went on to thank the cricketing fans and other supporting staff for the immense success of this year’s PSL.

“On behalf of the PCB, I thank all the fans who crossed the turnstiles to not only play their significant part in the success of PSL 7,” he said.

“I would like to thank our sponsors, players, franchises, the medical team, law enforcing agencies, local and provisional administrations, commentators and crew members, and ground staff for their untiring efforts, as well as millions watching on television all around the world who made this HBL PSL a memorable spectacle,” he concluded.

Mohammad Rizwan to lead Team of PSL 7

LAHORE: The captain of Multan Sultans and the Player of the Tournament of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7 – Mohammad Rizwan has been named as the captain of the team of the tournament.

Sultans’ skipper Rizwan, who has been adjudged as the captain of the side, is one of the four Sultans players who have been selected. Khushdil Shah, Tim David, and Rilee Rossouw also made their way into the Playing XI. The opening batter – Shan Masood, however, was selected as the 12th man.

The PSL 7 winning side – Lahore Qalandars is also represented by four players; including Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Zaman Khan, and Rashid Khan.

On the other hand, one player each from Peshawar Zalmi (Shoaib Malik), Islamabad United (Shadab Khan), and Quetta Gladiators (Naseem Shah) got their names in the team of the tournament.

The team of the PSL 2022 was selected by the distinguished members of the commentary panel of the recently concluded marquee event.

Multan Sultans’ skipper Mohammad Rizwan named Player of PSL 7

LAHORE: The captain of Multan Sultans, Mohammad Rizwan was adjudged as the Player of the tournament of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7, here at the closing ceremony of the mega event.

Rizwan’s stunning and consistent run in this year’s PSL has earned him the player of the tournament award. The right-handed batter remained a reliable asset for the former champions; scoring 546 runs at a strike rate of 126.68 and inspiring his side to the final.

On the other hand, Lahore Qalandars’ Fakhar Zaman and Islamabad United’s Shadab Khan were named as the Best Batter and Bowler of the tournament; following their exceptional performances. Fakhar scored 588 runs; including a century and seven fifties, at a strike rate of 153. Whereas, Shadab concluded the tournament with 19 wickets in nine matches with an economy rate of 6.47.

The commentary panel, which was commenting on every single ball of the mega event, selected the individual winners of the marquee event; considering player stats and match scenarios.

Furthermore, Sultans’ Khushdil Shah won two major awards; including All-rounder and Fielder of the Tournament, while Qalandars’ Zaman Khan claimed the Emerging Player of the Tournament.

Rashid Riaz, on the other hand, won the Umpire of the PSL 2022 award for his outstanding services.

‘Will expand PSL to Quetta, Peshawar, Multan’ Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja

LAHORE: The Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ramiz Raja has announced to expand the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to Multan, Peshawar, and Quetta from the next edition of the mega event.

While addressing the closing ceremony of the PSL 7, Ramiz announced to expand the marquee event to the next level by hosting the matches in other cities as well.

“We will expand the PSL to Quetta, Peshawar, Multan, and other parts of the country and the world will see the real buzz,” he said.

“Next year, we will have matches in Multan & Peshawar also,” he added.

Later, the PCB Chairman also served as the commentator in the final of the mega event between the home side Lahore Qalandars and the defending champions Multan Sultans.

While talking to Mike Haysman in the commentary panel, Ramiz said he is really happy to have a successful tournament.

“I am very grateful for successfully conducting the PSL 7. Everyone contributed whole-heartedly to making this event a successful one,” he said.

Ramiz also thanked the crowd for their immense support towards the marquee event and making the league a successful one by showing up in large numbers.

“Today is a wonderful festival of PSL. I think the people of Lahore played an important role in making PSL a success,” he said.

“Seeing the enthusiasm of the spectators, it seems that a new stadium should be built in Lahore which can seat 50,000 people,” he added.

PCB Chairman further revealed that he is supporting Qalandars to win the final as his children are with the home side.

Ramiz further commented on the historic tour of Australia after a gap of 24 years, said Australia’s tour to the country is welcoming.

“Australia’s tour to Pakistan is welcoming. It will be a good series for the cricket fans,” he said.

Ramiz went on to term the green shirts as the favorites to win the series against the Kangaroos.

On the other hand, PCB handed out one-year contracts to 100 junior cricketers between 13 and 19 years age bracket as part of PCB’s Junior Development Programme.

In addition to financial assistance, the PCB will invest in the youngsters to help them develop their entire persona, including cricketing skills and education. The 100 contracted players will then be earning monthly retainers of PKR 30,000 each after the contracts come into effect.

Lahore Qalandars beat Multan Sultans to claim their maiden PSL title

LAHORE: The home side Lahore Qalandars’ bowlers wreaked havoc over Multan Sultan’s batting unit; defeating the latter by 42 runs to win their maiden Pakistan Super League (PSL) title, here at Gaddafi stadium.

Set to chase 181 in the final of the mega event, the defending champions Sultans could only manage to score 138 before getting bowled out in the final over.

The Sultans, despite having a decent start, faltered in the run chase after the skipper Mohammad Rizwan made his way back to the pavilion after scoring just 14. Following his departure, the side began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and in the end, bowled out for 138.

The left-handed explosive batter Khushdil Shah, resisted a bit as he top-scored for his side with a gritty 32 off 23 balls, while the rest of the batters could not contribute significantly in the run chase.

The Qalandars’ skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi led his side from the front; taking three wickets, while Zaman Khan and Mohammad Hafeez followed back with two each. Haris Rauf and David Wiese, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

After opting to bat first, the Qalandars finished at 180-5 in the allotted 20 overs, thanks to the late on-slaught by Wiese and Harry Brook. The pair fired all the cylinders and bolstered the side to a commendable total in the final of the mega event.

Earlier, the home side was off to a poor start; losing three wickets for a mere 25 runs as Abdullah Shafique and Zeeshan Ashraf, alongside the in-form batter Fakhar Zaman perished after scoring cheaply.

The veteran batter – Hafeez then anchored the innings with his gritty knock and put on a valuable 54-runs partnership with Kamran Ghulam. Just when the pair appeared comfortable at the crease Kamran made his way back to the pavilion after attempting to sail the ball over the bowler’s head.

Following his departure, the cameos from Brook and Wiese turned the game on his head as the pair contributed a handy 43 runs on the last 16 balls. Wiese scored a quickfire 28 off just eight balls with the help of a boundary and three sixes, while Brook scored an unbeaten 41 off a mere 22 balls; smoking two boundaries and three sixes.

For the Sultans, Asif Afridi bagged three wickets, while Shahnawaz Dahani and David Willey struck out a batter each.

Rashid Khan denies claims about his PSL 7 final availability

CHITTAGONG: Aghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who was representing Lahore Qalandars in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7, denied the rumours about his availability for the final of the mega event.

Rashid, who is currently representing his national side in an away series against Bangladesh, has taken to Twitter to turn down the claims of him flying to Pakistan to represent the Qalandars in the final of the mega event.

“It would’ve been great to be part of [Lahore Qalandars] and play alongside lads in [the PSL 7] final,” he wrote.

“I won’t be able to make it for the finals due to National Duty which is always [the] first priority,” he added.

 

Furthermore, the star leg-spinner wished the skipper and the whole team of the Qalandars good luck for the PSL final, scheduled on February 27 under the sheds of Gaddafi Stadium.

It is worth mentioning here that Qalandars will lock horns with the defending champions Multan Sultans in the final of the mega event to seek their maiden PSL title.
