Travis Head joins Don Bradman in elite club with Adelaide Test hundred

ADELAIDE: Australia batter Travis Head etched his name alongside Sir Donald Bradman in elite Test history after striking an unbeaten century at his home ground during the third Ashes Test against England at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Head’s commanding knock marked his fourth century in as many Tests at the venue, a feat achieved by only three other Australians in the history of the game.

Bradman managed it twice, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and at Leeds, while Michael Clarke accomplished the milestone in Adelaide and Steve Smith at the MCG.

The 31-year-old’s unbeaten 142, his second hundred of the ongoing Ashes series and 11th overall in Test cricket, pushed Australia into a commanding position.

By stumps on day two, the hosts had built a daunting 356-run lead, putting them firmly on course to retain the Ashes after winning the first two Tests.

“Didn’t think I’d get one, so to get four it’s not too bad,” Travis Head said after the day’s play.

He found valuable support from fellow South Australian Alex Carey, who remained unbeaten on 52 as the pair safely steered Australia to stumps.

Head praised Carey’s presence at the crease, saying his energy helped him push through a tiring final session.

“He’s playing well and probably kept me going there late in the day,” Head said. “It was a long day, so it was nice to walk off with him at the end.”

Sri Lanka confirm captain, preliminary squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2026

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed Dasun Shanaka will continue as captain of the national T20I side, leading the team in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the bilateral series against Pakistan and England.

The announcement came following the appointment of former fast bowler Pramodya Wickramasinghe as the new Chief Selector.

Wickramasinghe, who now heads the revamped selection committee alongside former cricketers Vinothen John, Indika de Saram, Rasanjali de Alwis (nee Silva), and Tharanga Paranavitana, made the confirmation during a media briefing at the SLC offices.

The new committee has retained the 25-member preliminary squad previously announced for World Cup preparations, with the final squad to be named closer to the tournament.

The move ends speculation surrounding the future of former T20 captain Charith Asalanka, whose poor form in recent T20Is and absence from Pakistan last month had sparked rumours of a leadership change.

Shanaka had stepped in as stand-in captain during that tri-series and now formally retains the role for the global event, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Travis Head slams 142* as Australia move close to retaining Ashes

ADELAIDE: Danger man Travis Head crunched his fourth century in as many Tests at Adelaide Oval on Friday as Australia built a 356-run lead over England to stand on the brink of retaining the Ashes.

The hosts were 271-4 at stumps on day three of the third Test with Head on 142 and first-innings century-maker Alex Carey not out 52, taking the five-match series out of England’s reach.

England must win after crashing inside two days at the first Test in Perth and inside four in Brisbane, both by eight wickets.

But it appears to be an impossible task with the highest run chase at the ground, 316 by Australia against England in 1902.

Head’s crucial ton, his 11th, came off a composed 146 balls, although he almost didn’t get there, dropped on 99 by Harry Brook as impatience got the better of him.

He has now scored a century in four consecutive Tests on his home ground, following 140 against India last year and 119 and 175 against the West Indies.

Australia suffered an early setback in a tense 20 minutes before lunch after England were all out for 286 on the back of Ben Stokes’ gritty 83 in response to Australia’s first innings 371.

Bryson Carse trapped Jake Weatherald lbw for one, and he walked without reviewing after the umpire lifted his finger, although replays showed the ball was pitching outside leg stump.

It gave England a glimmer of hope, but after the break, Travis Head slammed the door shut, cutting and chopping boundaries to all corners of the ground.

Marnus Labuschagne went for 13 when he edged Josh Tongue to Harry Brook at slip, with reviews showing it carried.

Usman Khawaja, who hit a defiant 82 in the first innings after his last-minute call-up for the ill Steve Smith, was a perfect foil for the more aggressive Head.

But on 40, he was undone by the spin of Will Jacks, caught behind, and Cameron Green followed soon after for seven, edging Tongue to Brook.

After getting through the nervous 90s, Head finally brought up his century with a four off Joe Root, taking off his helmet and kissing the turf before pumping his fists.

While not in the same vein as his match-winning 69-ball century in Perth, it was a critical knock, supported by Carey and aided by Stokes not bowling after his exploits with the bat.

After a woeful batting display on Thursday, Stokes and Jofra Archer kept England’s dreams alive with a stirring 106-run ninth-wicket stand. They resumed at 213-8 in muggy conditions with Stokes not out 45 and Archer on 30.

Stokes, who suffered leg cramps and dehydration during his gutsy rearguard action in sweltering 40 Celsius heat on Thursday, brought up his slowest ever 50 in Tests, off 159 balls.

He kept plugging away but finally fell when Mitchell Starc took the new ball and bowled him, with Stokes one of the few players who showed the fight he had demanded before the game.

Archer was another, ably helping his captain. The fast bowler was the last man out when caught by Labuschagne off Scott Boland for 51, his highest Test score and a maiden half-century

Boland ended with 3-45 while Pat Cummins took 3-69 in his first Test since July.

England’s woes began when openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, along with the under-performing Ollie Pope, departed in a 15-ball blitz on Thursday at the hands of Cummins and Nathan Lyon.

Harry Brook showed some resistance with 45, but the Australian attack was relentless.

New Zealand Cricket chief Scott Weenink quits after split over new T20 league

The boss of New Zealand cricket, Scott Weenink, resigned on Friday after a prolonged and bitter dispute with players and member associations over the proposed new T20 league.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Scott Weenink, a businessman and former first-class cricketer for Wellington, stepped down after just over two years in the job.

A split had developed between Weenink and players, and member associations, over a proposed franchise T20 league that would replace the country’s domestic Super Smash.

Tentatively named NZ20, the new league would target foreign investment and ownership, likely through IPL franchises and aim to attract top overseas players.

It is seen by players and New Zealand’s six member associations as an important progression in the cricketing landscape.

Notably, New Zealand is the only ICC full member nation without a franchise T20 league.

Weenink was thought to prefer a New Zealand franchise entering the Australian Big Bash League (BBL) instead.

“After careful consideration, it has become clear that I hold a different view from several member associations… on the future priorities for NZC,” Weenink said in a statement.

“Given these differences, I believe it is in the best interests of the organisation that new leadership takes NZC forward from here.”

New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham last week threw his support behind NZ20.

“I think you look at the NZ20 possibility, I think that’s a great initiative,” Latham said.

“What it will bring to the country, to cricket here in New Zealand, will be hugely beneficial, having international players to boost the standard of cricket.”

The new competition also has the backing of New Zealand white ball captain Mitchell Santner.

Scott Weenink said he was sad to leave after a successful period for NZC.

“I do not wish to create ongoing instability by continuing without the support of some key stakeholders,” Weenink said.

“I depart with pride in the excellent progress made by NZC during my time as CEO, and confidence in the people in NZC who will carry the game forward.”

Weenink will finish his tenure with NZC on January 30.

PSL 11: Registration opened for foreign players

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday announced the opening of the registration window for foreign players for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11.

PSL 11 is scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3, 2026, a timeline earlier confirmed by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi during the league’s second global roadshow in New York on December 14.

In an official press release, the PCB invited international cricketers from around the world to register for what it described as the largest edition of the tournament to date.

“As the league enters a historic new era of expansion, cricketing talent from around the world is welcome to join for what promises to be the biggest season yet,” the PCB stated.

“With the addition of two new franchises, the league has expanded to eight teams, creating significantly more roster spots and earning opportunities for international players.”

The board further clarified that both player agents and independent overseas cricketers must complete their registration by January 20, 2026, in order to be included in the official player pool for the season.

“Agents and independent players are encouraged to complete their registration before the 20 January 2026 deadline to be included in the Player Pool. Interested players and agents can register through the link available here,” the PCB added.

PSL, which began in 2016 with five teams and expanded to six in 2018 with the addition of Multan Sultans, is set to grow further in the upcoming season 11.

Two new franchises will be auctioned in Islamabad on January 8, with the proceedings to be broadcast live.

West Indies openers hold firm after New Zealand declare on 575-8

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: Brandon King and John Campbell comfortably negotiated 23 overs in fading light before stumps to take the West Indies to 110-0 at the end of day two of the third Test after New Zealand declared on a mammoth 575-8.

The West Indies, with King unbeaten on 55 and Campbell not out 45, are still 465 runs behind.

New Zealand opener Devon Conway’s epic 227 and some late hitting from Rachin Ravindra, who had six fours and two sixes in his 72 not out, and Ajaz Patel (30 not out) allowed captain Tom Latham to give his bowlers more than an hour at the West Indies openers.

But King and Campbell were more than up to the task, seeing off the new ball and scoring freely on a flat Bay Oval wicket as New Zealand’s bowlers struggled to find a good length.

King’s 50 came from just 62 balls, hitting nine fours, and Campbell’s 45 was made from 60 deliveries and included seven fours.

Campbell was nursing a sore right hand that was struck in the nets prior to the match.

If the injury-depleted West Indies had any other options, he may have sat out the Test, such was the swelling and pain he was experiencing.

The visitors also have doubts over whether Kemar Roach, who is nursing a hamstring strain, will bat, while leading batter Shai Hope was ill and stayed at the team hotel on Friday.

Three West Indian bowlers took two wickets each, Justin Greaves the pick with 2-83 from 29 overs, while Jayden Seales had 2-100 and Anderson Phillip 2-154.

The battered West Indian bowling corps did show some fight after lunch, led by a sharp and accurate spell from Seales.

He trapped Conway lbw to make it 432-4, and the West Indies removed two more batsmen as New Zealand went to tea at 508-6.

Glenn Phillips lost his battle with Phillip after tea, edging to first slip, and Zak Foulkes was bowled by a peach of a ball, clipping the top of off stump.

Recalled spinner Patel lofted two sixes in the final over before the declaration in his 30 from 30 balls.

New Zealand had resumed after lunch at 424-3 at lunch, looking to punish an under-strength West Indian attack missing Roach.

The tourists did not help themselves in the field. Kavem Hodge dropped Conway when he was on 206, and Daryl Mitchell was shelled by Greaves at second slip when he was on nine.

Seales was first to strike in the afternoon, darting one past the inside edge of Conway and into the pads, a ball that would have clattered into middle and leg stumps.

Conway’s three runs after lunch saw him go past the top score of his batting idol, Neil McKenzie, who made 226 for South Africa against Bangladesh in 2008.

Mitchell fell for 11, getting a thick edge down the legside from Roston Chase, taken by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach, who also accounted for Tom Blundell off Seales.

Earlier, Conway resumed on 178 and brought up his second Test double-century, his first since his debut in 2021 against England at Lord’s, when he cut a Seales short ball to the point boundary. His 200 came off 316 balls, with 28 fours.

Greaves then struck to remove Williamson just before lunch for 31, caught by Imlach.

President’s Cup: Zafar Gohar’s six-fer spins Ghani Glass victory

KARACHI: Ghani Glass left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar picked up a six-wicket haul to dismantle Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) batting line-up in the sixth round of the President’s Cup Grade-I fixture here at the KCCA Stadium on Thursday.

Zafar Gohar wreaked havoc with the ball, taking outstanding figures of six for 21 in 10 overs, bowling two maidens to restrict KRL to 165 all out in 41.2 overs as they fell 35 runs short.

KRL’s spectacular collapse included losing all ten wickets for a mere 42 runs after Shahzaib Khan 52 off 72b, 5x4s, 2x6s) and Saad Baig (45, 52b, 5x4s, 1×6) had put on a 107-run opening stand.

Apart from Zafar’s career best List A figures, skipper Noman Ali chipped in with two wickets, while Mohammad Rameez Jnr and Ubaid Shah struck once each.

Ghani Glass too suffered a batting collapse of 98-9 from being 102-1 to 200 all out after being put in to bat first by KRL.

Following Yahya Bin Abdul Rehman’s early departure, Sharjeel Khan (58, 48b, 4x4s, 4x6s) and Mohsin Riaz (32, 39b, 2x4s, 2x6s) stitched an 85-run stand.

Tayyab Tahir (33, 42b, 3x4s), Hussain Talat (26, 35b, 3x4s), and Hammad Butt (20, 48b) got starts but were unable to convert them.

For KRL, left-arm wrist-spinner Sufyan Moqim picked up a four-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) registered their sixth win on the trot as they beat Sahir Associates by three wickets at the UBL Sports Complex.

OGDCL chased the 279-run target set by Sahir Associates with 27 balls to spare, with  Danish Aziz unbeaten on 55 off 59 balls with the help of five fours and one six.

Danish had put on a 65-run stand for the sixth wicket with Umar Siddiq, who changed the tempo of the chase with a 33-ball 40, hitting five fours and a solitary six.

For Sahir Associates, Faham-ul-Haq picked up two wickets for 20 runs in six overs, including two maidens.

For the unversed, the last and seventh round of the tournament will take place on Saturday, 20 December at the same venues, with the National Bank Stadium and Naya Nazimabad Ground games being day-night fixtures.

Ecuadorean footballer Mario Pineida shot and killed

Ecuadoran footballer Mario Pineida was shot and killed in the port city of Guayaquil on Wednesday, his team said.

Guayaquil has become a hotspot for gang violence linked to drug trafficking, and several football players in Ecuador have been targeted in recent months.

Pineida, 33, was part of Ecuador’s national team for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup qualifiers, but was not selected for the squad for the 2022 finals in Qatar. He also played for Fluminense in 2022.

In a post on X, his club, Barcelona SC, said it “regrets to inform, with deep sorrow, that it has been officially notified of the death of our player Mario Pineida, an event that occurred following an attack against him” in Guayaquil.

Pineida’s death was confirmed by the interior ministry, which said it has assigned a special police unit to the case.

Digital news outlet Primicias reported Pineida was attacked by two people riding motorcycles, who opened fire on him, his mother, and another woman.

In September, three players from Ecuador’s second division were killed, with one of them allegedly being linked to sports betting. A month later, local footballer Bryan Angula was wounded in a shooting.

Ecuador, once one of Latin America’s safest countries, has become a key cocaine transit hub between top producers Colombia and Peru, and consumers around the world.

Car bombings, shootings, and extortion have been on the rise in Guayaquil, which recorded 1,900 murders between January and September — the highest toll in Ecuador.

Meeting called after Pakistan kabaddi player represents ‘India’

The Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) has called an emergency meeting of its general council on 27 December to inquire into the participation of national player Ubaidullah Rajpur in a private tournament held in Bahrain.

The issue arose after Rajput, who is a prominent international Kabaddi player, was seen wearing an Indian jersey and waving the Indian flag.

Videos and images of Ubaidullah wearing the Indian kit during the GCC Kabaddi Cup held on December 16 at the Gulf Air Club in Salmabad went viral on social media.

Following this, PKF secretary Rana Sarwar took strong exception to the incident, stating that teams were given names despite the event being private.

“No official Pakistan team was sent and no permission was granted,” he said.

“Action would also be taken against those who falsely represented a ‘Pakistan’ team at the tournament,” he said.

Meanwhile, PKF chairman Chaudhry Shafay Hussain ordered an investigation into the matter and vowed to take action against those responsible.

Ubaidullah, on the other hand, issued a public apology on social media, stating that he was unaware that the private team he had been invited to join would be labelled as ‘India’.

He explained that it was a local annual cup and not an official India-Pakistan contest.

“I only realised how the match was being portrayed after hearing slogans from the crowd,” he remarked in a video statement.

Ubaidullah further requested the commentator to clarify that the match was a club-level event rather than a bilateral contest.

“It was just a cup, not a World Cup, and this is not how a World Cup happens. If it had been a World Cup, I would definitely have played for Pakistan. I am Pakistani,” he reiterated.

“If my actions have hurt anyone’s feelings, I apologize.” “I apologize to my federation, my coach, and my supporters,” Ubaidullah concluded.

WATCH: McGrath’s reaction as Lyon surpasses him goes viral

ADELAIDE: Australia’s legendary pacer Glenn McGrath reaction went viral after ace off-spinner Nathan Lyon surpassed his Test wicket tally during the third Ashes Test against England here on Thursday.

Lyon claimed his 564th Test wicket, moving past McGrath and sitting behind only Shane Warne among Australian bowlers.

The landmark came in memorable fashion as the 38-year-old struck twice in his very first over after returning to the Test side, removing Ollie Pope before clean-bowling Ben Duckett to reach the milestone.

The achievement came on day two of Lyon’s 141st Test and underlined his enduring value to Australia’s red-ball setup.

After Lyon surpassed his record, McGrath mimicked slamming his chair on the floor.

Nonetheless, McGrath praised Lyon and shared his thoughts on the achievement.

“What a bowler. Nathan Lyon deserves to get that.”

“You wondered what impact Nathan Lyon was going to have in this game. First over, and that was a gem of a ball,” he added.

Speaking after the day’s play, Lyon talked about his ideals and expressed pride in the achievement.

“I grew up idolising Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath and these guys in my childhood were my heroes,” he said.

“And to think of being able to overtake Glenn … it’s pretty humbling to be honest with you, and it’s something that I’ll look back on at the end of my career, or even tonight,” Nathan Lyon added.

The 38-year-old thanked teammates for standing by his side, noting that he would take time to reflect on what he described as an ‘extremely special’ moment in his long career.

“I’ll sit back and try and have a moment because it is an extremely special moment for myself. “But I haven’t been able to do that without the guys at the other end, my teammates.”

“I’ve been around this group long enough to understand my role inside, and it’s an amazing group to be a part of,” he explained.

“I’ll continue to enjoy that while I can, it’s a pretty special group, and just extremely grateful for that opportunity, I guess. “Same emotions as usual, nervous, but that’s me,” the veteran spinner concluded.
