Jobe Bellingham finding his feet as Dortmund head to City

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham is gradually making his mark after a slow start ahead of his return to England to face Manchester City on Wednesday.

Jobe joined Dortmund in the summer, aged 19, for a reported fee of 30.5 million euros ($35 million) from Sunderland, among the most expensive transfers in Dortmund’s history.

Jobe followed in the footsteps of his brother Jude, who moved to the Westfalenstadion five years earlier, aged 17.

Jude became one of the most sought-after players at Dortmund and is now a true superstar after moving to Real Madrid in 2023.

While Jobe has returned to England to play for the under-21s side he captains, Wednesday’s match will be his first on English soil for his new club.

Like City, Dortmund sit in the top eight, having won two and drawn one of their three Champions League games so far.

The younger Bellingham understood a move to Dortmund would provoke comparisons with Jude, but felt the club offered the best place for him to develop.

Like he did at Sunderland, the younger Bellingham has ‘Jobe’ on his jersey rather than his last name, due to his famous brother.

On arriving in Dortmund, Jobe admitted that pre-season comparisons with his older brother were on his mind.

“It’s something you do think about. You have these anxieties, especially me, as I’m only young,” he told reporters, adding, “I’m not perfect. I do think about these things.”

With Jude’s exploits in black and yellow fresh in the mind, Jobe took longer than many expected to find his feet in Germany.

A decent Club World Cup showing, Jobe started three games, scoring a goal and assisting another before missing a showdown with his brother due to a yellow card suspension, was followed by a more difficult time when the season started.

Jobe was hooked at half-time in his opening Bundesliga game. Jobe’s father and agent Mark confronted Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl in the player tunnel after the match.

The incident forced Dortmund to publicly reiterate “the active area is and remains reserved for players, coaches and management, not families and advisors.”

Jobe started his next league match but was then benched, only picking up minutes in the dying stages of matches and failing to record any goals or assists during his brief cameos.

In mid-October at Bayern Munich, Jobe made a high-profile error, failing to clear the ball off the goal line, allowing Michael Olise to score what would eventually be the winner.

The setback seemed to spark the midfielder, however. Three days later, Jobe started in the Champions League at Copenhagen, laying on two assists in a 4-2 win.

On Tuesday, Jobe helped create Dortmund’s equaliser in a German Cup clash at Eintracht Frankfurt, which his side won on penalties.

And last Friday, the 20-year-old put his body on the line late to block a potential equaliser in the dying stages of a hard-fought 1-0 win at Augsburg.

A Dortmund source told German tabloid Bild on Monday that Jobe was in line to start against City.

While the noise had grown louder around Jobe, perhaps also from inside the Bellingham family itself, Dortmund feel his development is not lagging, but actually ahead of schedule.

Trent should be remembered for ‘great’ Liverpool moments, says Slot

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says he will give Trent Alexander-Arnold a warm welcome when Real Madrid visit Anfield on Tuesday, even if the right-back receives a frosty reception from his formerly adoring fans.

The England international, a boyhood Reds fan, ran down his contract to join the Spanish giants in June for a nominal fee.

The 27-year-old played a huge role in the Reds’ return to the top of English and European football under Jurgen Klopp and Slot, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

“I have great memories of the player and of the human being,” said Slot, who won the Premier League during his only season working with Alexander-Arnold.

“I have memories working with him, which were only positive and I have memories when I was watching him in front of the television, which are only positive as well.

“I can remember multiple great moments of him wearing the Liverpool shirt.”

The Dutchman told reporters on Monday: “He will get a warm welcome by me. Let’s first wait and see if he’s on the pitch tomorrow, and how our fans will react.”

The England international was booed by Liverpool fans at times during his final few months at the club as his expected departure approached.

Liverpool have badly missed his presence in a difficult start to Slot’s second season, with six defeats in their past eight games.

But the move to Spain is also yet to work out for Alexander-Arnold, who has been hampered by a hamstring injury and has found himself on the bench a number of times.

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is expected to keep faith with Federico Valverde at right-back from the start of Tuesday’s blockbuster Champions League clash.

Just under a year ago, Liverpool beat the 15-time European champions 2-0 at this stage of the competition.

However, Madrid arrive on Merseyside in far better form this time around, with French striker Kylian Mbappe in scintillating form.

Los Blancos are five points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga and have a perfect record of three wins from three games in the league phase of the Champions League.

“They have always been a big force in this competition,” said Slot. “A very good team, but we are a very good team as well.”

Slot confirmed Alisson Becker, Alexander Isak, and Jeremie Frimpong are out injured, with only Isak in contention to return to face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Vitinha says PSG-Bayern Champions League clash will show who’s ‘best’

Portuguese midfielder Vitinha said Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) home clash with undefeated Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday will be a meeting between “the two best teams in Europe”.

PSG come into the sternest test yet of their European title defence, top of the French Ligue 1, and with three wins from three so far in the league phase.

But their opponents, Bayern, have started their season with a European record 15 wins in 15 outings, and sit second behind only PSG in the standings in the continent’s elite club competition.

“We are the two best teams in Europe. Bayern are in fantastic form. We’re also doing well, continuing our momentum from last year,” Vitinha told his pre-match press conference on Monday.

But as for who is mightiest between the two heavyweights, the 25-year-old said Tuesday’s match will tell.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“The answer will be given tomorrow. We have to talk on the pitch,” he told reporters.

“When you’re a player, you want to play in this type of match because everyone wants to see it, and people will say, ‘this team is better because they won’.”

PSG coach Luis Enrique was, however, more temperate in his build-up to the game.

“To find out who is the best team in Europe, we have to wait until the end of the season and see how many trophies each team wins,” the 55-year-old said.

“Right now, it’s clear they are very strong… It’s incredible that they’ve won their last 15 matches. We already have trouble winning three or four matches.”

If PSG have been less dominant than Bayern domestically — drawing three matches and losing one in 11 league outings — Luis Enrique said supporters should still “trust” his side to show they can best the Bavarians.

“Do you think that I or the supporters should assess our team? I don’t think so, we deserve to have a little trust,” the Spaniard said.

“But tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Parc des Princes with our supporters, we have the confidence we need to overcome their pressing game.”

Afghanistan Cricket Board set to part ways with Jonathon Trott

Afghanistan Cricket Team head coach Jonathon Trott is set to step down from his role following the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, set to be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the decision in a statement, stating that the board is focusing on long-term planning.

“ACB recognises that coaching transitions are a natural part of the global cricketing ecosystem. Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership and strategic needs,” the board said in a statement.

“No international side remains under a single coach forever, and this change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan as the board continues building toward long-term excellence. This decision comes as part of ACB’s long-term strategic planning for the next phase of the national team’s growth.”

Former England player Trott occupied the head coach role in July 2022. He has been pivotal in the team’s rise as a competitive white-ball team. Initially, Trott was appointed for 18 months, but his contract was extended for a year in 2024 and then again through 2025.

Besides an impressive showing in the T20 World Cup, Afghanistan also defeated England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and came close to toppling the eventual champions, Australia, in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Following the announcement, Trott shared his thoughts and shed light on his tenure in which the Afghanistan team reached new heights.

“It has been a privilege to work with the Afghanistan National Team and to witness their passion, resilience, and hunger to achieve greatness,” he said

“I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I will always remain a supporter of Afghan cricket. I wish the team and the Afghan people continued success in the years ahead,” he continued.

Trott already has his next assignment lined up, as head coach of ILT20 franchise Gulf Giants for the upcoming season. The tournament is scheduled to begin on December 2. He was the head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the 2024-25 SA20 but was replaced by Sourav Ganguly after one season.

Jonathon Trott has already lined up his next role as the head coach of the ILT20 franchise, the Gulf Giants, in the forthcoming season, which is set to begin on December 2.

PCB parts ways with Women’s Head Coach Muhammad Wasim

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially parted ways with Muhammad Wasim, bringing an end to his tenure as head coach of the Women’s team following a disappointing World Cup 2025 campaign.

The development was confirmed by the board on Monday through an official press release, stating that the search for a new head coach is already underway.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the completion of Mohammad Wasim’s tenure as Head Coach of the Pakistan National Women’s Cricket Team,” the statement read.

Wasim’s departure comes on the back of a winless World Cup run, where Pakistan finished at the bottom of the points table.

The team lost four of their seven matches, while three fixtures were washed out due to rain.

Following the team’s early exit, speculation had been rife that the PCB was considering changes in the coaching setup to revamp the women’s cricket structure ahead of future assignments.

In its statement, the PCB reiterated its long-term commitment to developing the women’s game in the country.

“The PCB remains committed to strengthening women’s cricket in Pakistan and ensuring the team receives the best possible support to achieve continued success on the international stage,” the board said.

Notably, Muhammad Wasim was appointed as the women’s team head coach ahead of the ACC Women’s Asia Cup in June 2024.

Babar Azam on verge of surpassing Virat Kohli’s record in South Africa ODIs

FAISALABAD: Pakistan star batter Babar Azam is on the verge of achieving two major milestones during the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting on Tuesday at the Iqbal Stadium.

The former Pakistan captain has so far scored 19 centuries in ODI cricket, with the last one occurring in 2023 against Nepal.

He is only one century away from equalling the record for the most centuries in ODI cricket by a Pakistani batter, currently held by the legendary Saeed Anwar, who scored a total of 20 centuries.

Saeed scored 20 centuries during his illustrious career, which spanned 247 matches and 244 innings. Meanwhile, Babar has played 134 ODI matches so far.

In the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, he has the opportunity to equal or even break Saeed’s record if he scores two centuries.

  • Babar Azam – 19* centuries in 134 matches
  • Mohammad Yousuf – 15 centuries in 281 matches
  • Fakhar Zaman – 11 centuries in 82 matches
  • Mohammad Hafeez – 11 centuries in 218 matches

Moreover, Babar Azam has the opportunity to become the second-fastest batsman in ODI history to score 20 centuries.

The record for the fastest to reach this milestone is held by South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who accomplished it in 108 innings.

He is followed by Indian batting legend Virat Kohli, who reached 20 centuries in 133 innings.

Currently, with 19 centuries in 131 innings, Babar stands a good chance of breaking Kohli’s record if he scores his 20th century in his next innings.

  • Virat Kohli – 133 innings
  • AB de Villiers – 175 innings

In the third and final match of the series against South Africa, he scored a brilliant half-century to help his team clinch the series 2-1.

This knock marked his first half-century in T20Is since his 75 runs against Ireland back in May 2024.

Shaheen Afridi comments on his appointment as ODI captain

FAISALABAD: Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has expressed his pride in being appointed as the ODI captain of Pakistan ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, which is set to begin on Tuesday at the Iqbal Stadium.

The 25-year-old pacer replaced wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan as the ODI captain last month.

Speaking at a pre-series press conference, Shaheen called it an “honour and responsibility” to lead the national side, emphasising teamwork and respect for the management’s decisions.

“It’s an honour to represent Pakistan as captain,” Shaheen said. “Wearing the national colours is always special, and with this new role comes added responsibility.”

The left-arm pacer noted that Pakistan carried good momentum from the T20I series and were fully focused on maintaining their form.

“The boys are in good rhythm after a strong T20 series. Our focus now is to carry that energy into one-day cricket and improve in the areas that matter,” he added.

When questioned about leadership changes and his earlier stint as T20I captain, Shaheen responded calmly, reaffirming his commitment to Pakistan cricket above all else.

“Our job is to play cricket and serve Pakistan in whatever role we’re given,” he stated.

“Leadership decisions rest with the board and management, and we respect that. My only focus right now is on performing well and helping the team grow in ODIs.”

The star pacer also threw his full backing behind former captain Babar Azam, who recently returned to form in the T20I series.

“Every player goes through ups and downs. Babar’s class is never in doubt,” Shaheen said.

“Just because he doesn’t perform in a couple of matches doesn’t make him a bad player. For the last four or five years, he’s been our most consistent performer and the highest run-scorer in both T20Is and ODIs.”

“Whenever our senior players contribute, the team ends up winning. Babar’s return to form is a huge boost for us.”
