Aiden Markram says South Africa woes ‘buried’ ahead of WTC final

South Africa batter Aiden Markram insists there will be no mental scarring from his side’s previous failures when they face holders Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s.

The Proteas have suffered several agonising near-misses in major tournaments, including last year’s T20 World Cup final in Barbados.

They needed just 30 more runs to win, with 30 balls and six wickets remaining, yet somehow contrived to lose in devastating fashion against India.

But Markram, South Africa’s captain in that match and one of five survivors from the game in the WTC final squad, is confident there will be no hangover for a red-ball side led by Temba Bavuma.

“This team is a bit different,” Aiden Markram told reporters at Lord’s on Sunday.

“The few of us that have been a part of previous events that didn’t go our way have dealt with it, have obviously chatted to each other and made sure we’ve buried it nicely and taken some good lessons from it.

“But besides that, now, it’s more about the excitement of having another opportunity to actually do the job. So that’s pretty much where the mind is at the moment.”

As an opener, Markram will have the tough task of trying to blunt a formidable Australia bowling line-up in an eagerly anticipated final that starts on Wednesday.

But South Africa, with Kagiso Rabada leading the way, have an impressive pace attack of their own.

“When you’re opening the batting, obviously your responsibility is to get the team off to a good start and get us ahead of the game. So that’s the challenge, that’s what excites us,” Markram said.

“But when you’re preparing against your bowlers, who are world-class, it can only help you as a batter, as uncomfortable as it can be at times.”

South Africa won seven Tests in a row to qualify for the WTC final, a run that featured several short series.

“A lot of our series have been two-game series. So in order to win that series, you can’t start slow,” Markram said.

“There’s no second dip at it, so we’re going to have to make sure we hit the ground running and are nice and sharp come day one.”

The 30-year-old Markram, a veteran of 45 Tests, is relishing the chance to make history on the hallowed turf at Lord’s.

“To play in a Test match here is really special, and then obviously for it to be a final is probably the cherry on top,” he said.

Markram, asked what made Lord’s so memorable, replied: “Probably just the history…You know how many of the greats of the game have played here.

“For us to have that opportunity to play on the same field and share that changing room that they once sat in is quite a cool thought.”

CSA provides update on Aiden Markram’s fitness ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final

LAHORE: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has provided a major update on the fitness of star batter Aiden Markram ahead of their crucial ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final clash against New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Wednesday.

Markram, who was leading South Africa in the absence of regular skipper Temba Bavuma, experienced hamstring discomfort during the team’s final group-stage match against England on Saturday.

The middle-order batter walked off the field during England’s innings, handing over the leadership duties to wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen.

The development was first confirmed on the broadcast during the 31st over of England’s innings, raising concerns over Markram’s availability for the knockout stage.

As a precautionary measure, CSA called up spin-bowling all-rounder George Linde as a backup option.

However, the latest update brings relief for the Proteas camp as Aiden Markram has passed his fitness test and is available for selection in the high-stakes semi-final against the Black Caps.

It’s worth noting that South Africa kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan, rolling them out for 208 in pursuit of 316.

Their second fixture against Australia in Rawalpindi was completely washed out due to rain, but they sealed their semi-final berth in style with a seven-wicket thumping of England, chasing down 180 with ease.

With Markram fit and South Africa in top form, the Proteas will be aiming to make their first Champions Trophy final since 1998.

South Africa captain to miss first ODI against Pakistan, replacement named

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma is set to miss the first ODI of the three-match series against Pakistan, scheduled later today in Paarl, and Aiden Markram will lead the team in his absence.

Bavuma has been rested to manage his workload ahead of the crucial two-match Test series against Pakistan. However, he is likely to feature in the next two ODIs.

It’s worth noting that Bavuma’s team has emerged as formidable contenders for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, currently perched at the summit of the points table after their clean sweep victory over Sri Lanka in a recent two-match Test series.

With two crucial Tests still to be played on home turf against Pakistan, securing victories in these matches will further cement their position in the race for the final.

The decision to rest Bavuma highlights South Africa’s strategic approach to managing player workload and ensuring peak performance.

This decision was made considering the team’s preparations for major upcoming competitions, notably the highly anticipated Champions Trophy in 2025 and the critical World Test Championship matches.

Meanwhile, the two-match Test series will kick off in Centurion on December 26, followed by the second Test in Cape Town, starting from January 3.

Aiden Markram believes South Africa ‘can win from any position’

South Africa captain Aiden Markram expressed confidence in his team’s ability to secure victory from any situation ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final against India.

This is the first time the Proteas Men are competing in a World Cup final, having lost seven semi-finals, including a gut-wrenching defeat against Australia in the 1999 World Cup.

Speaking ahead of the final, Markram acknowledged Proteas’ struggles in the ICC tournaments in the past, however, he believes that his side can rewrite history.

“Probably I just see it as a new game of cricket, to be honest. We all know India’s a great team. Us as a team, as South Africans, have been sort of trending in the right direction the last couple of years, but maybe not progressed in tournaments as far as we would have liked,” he said.

“So, an exciting occasion tomorrow against a good opposition in India, but a nice opportunity for us as the Proteas as well.”

South Africa won a few narrow games on their way to the final. Aiden Markram believes this will help his team in the final, as they know how to come out victorious from pressure situations.

“There have been close moments in games that would have probably affected the result and we managed to win those moments,” Markram added.

“To have done them two, three, maybe four times throughout the competition so far has sort of given the team the belief that you can win from any position, which I think is quite important for a team to have that.”

Markram, South Africa smash World Cup records with Sri Lanka thrashing

DELHI: Right-handed middle-order batter Aiden Markram and South Africa smashed several records as they wreaked havoc with the bat against Sri Lanka in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Saturday.

Aiden Markram scored the fastest World Cup century in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India on Saturday.

The right-handed batter put on a blistering display and smashed the record in 49 balls.

He finished at a 54-ball 106 which featured 14 boundaries and three sixes.

The previous record was held by former Ireland cricketer Kevin O’Brien. He scored his century in 50 balls against Ireland in the group stage fixture in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

South Africa went on to score the highest team total in a World Cup game as they scored 428/5 in their 50 overs as Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie van der Dussen baton-charged Sri Lankan bowlers.

The trio scored sublime centuries, the first such instance in a World Cup game that three batters from a team got to the triple-figures.

Notably in ODIs, South Africa had imitated the feat twice – against West Indies in Johannesburg and India in Mumbai while England had three centurions when they scored a record 498 against the Netherlands in June 2022.

For the unversed, South Africa’s 428/5 against Sri Lanka was their eighth 400-plus total in ODIs — the most by any team — three of which came at the World Cup while the rest of the teams have two 400-plus scores in total.

Moreover, South Africa’s 428/5 was also the highest total scored against Sri Lanka, surpassing India’s 414 for 7 in 2009 in Rajkot.

Warner, Head blitz fail to trump Markram’s ton as South Africa edge Australia

South Africa’s spin bowlers backed up a century by Aiden Markram as the hosts ended Australia’s winning streak with a 111-run victory in the third one-day international at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Tuesday.

Markram hit 102 not out in a South African total of 338 for six.

South Africa survived a furious assault by David Warner and Travis Head before bowling out Australia for 227.

Australia won the first two games in the five-match series after sweeping a Twenty20 series 3-0.

The tourists looked on track for another win when Warner and Head thrashed 79 for the first wicket off only 48 balls.

Australia were 104 for one at the end of the 10-over power play, the second time in a row they reached three figures while fielding restrictions were in place.

But left-arm spinners Tabraiz Shamsi (two for 29) and Keshav Maharaj (two for 37) changed the course of the match on a spin-friendly pitch before fast bowler Gerald Coetzee (four for 50) finished off the Australian innings.

Maharaj also made a key intervention in the field with a direct-hit run-out of Warner, who made 78 off 56 balls before slipping and losing his shoe as he set off for a single.

“We needed a positive one,” said South African captain Temba Bavuma.

“The batters knuckled down and we were banking on the wicket assisting the spin bowlers and it’s exactly what it did.

“The power play didn’t go as well as we wanted but the way we clawed it back was exactly what we’re looking for.”

Australian captain Mitchell Marsh said the loss was “a little slip-up” in conditions which are likely to be replicated during the World Cup in India next month.

“Hopefully we learnt a lot from it,” he said.

Quinton de Kock (82) and captain Temba Bavuma (57) gave South Africa an ideal start with an opening stand of 146 in 22.5 overs.

But Australia were able to slow down the scoring, with part-time off-spinner Travis Head making good use of a slow, dry pitch to bowl unchanged and take two for 39 in 10 overs.

Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen gave the innings late impetus with a sixth-wicket partnership of 63 off 31 balls which was ended by a sensational diving left-handed catch by Sean Abbott on the cover boundary off Nathan Ellis.

Aiden Markram replaces Temba Bavuma as South Africa T20I captain

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday, appointed experienced batter Aiden Markram as the new T20I captain ahead of their home series against West Indies.

Markram, who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural SA20 title, has now replaced Temba Bavuma as South Africa’s T20I captain, who has been dropped from the squad altogether.

Furthermore, the CSA also made changes in the men’s side’s coaching setup as former all-rounder JP Duminy has been roped in as the batting coach on a permanent basis while Rory Kleinveldt, has been given the temporary bowling coach role in the white-ball setup.

“I would like to congratulate Aiden on his appointment as captain of the Proteas T20I team,” director of cricket Enoch Nkwe said in a release. “Leadership is extremely familiar to him having successfully led on so many levels. He is a player that inspires confidence and he has all the qualities to succeed in the role. We have no doubt will help take South Africa to the next level.

“At the same time, we would like to thank Temba for filling the position so aptly over the past two years. He has done a commendable job during this period and now has a new role to fulfil within the national set-up.”

South Africa’s T20I Squad: Aiden Markram (c), Quinton de Kock , Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs.

Markram’s all-round brilliance propel Eastern Cape to sink Cape Town

GQEBERHA: Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s skipper Aiden Markram led from the front and powered his side to a four-wicket triumph over MI Cape Town in the ninth match of the ongoing SA20 here.

Set to chase 163, the Sunrisers amassed the total with just three balls to spare courtesy of a vital eight-run knock by James Fuller at the death after Markram and Sarel Erwee laid the foundation for the run chase.

The Sunrisers had a frustrating start to their pursuit as the side lost openers Adam Rossington and JJ Smuts for a mere nine runs in the third over.

Skipper Markram, however, then stood up for his team and put on an anchoring third-wicket partnership with Erwee as they raised 92 runs at a decent pace.

The duo looked to have made it an easy affair for their side before Rashid Khan provided a much-needed breakthrough to MI Cape Town in the form of Erwee who perished after scoring 41 off 45 balls, hitting three boundaries and two sixes.

MI Cape Town bowlers made a strong comeback into the game in the next over when Odean Smith removed Markram and Jordan Cox (1) when the side still needed 52 runs.

Markram top-scored for his side with 50 off 35 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries.

Following the slump, Tristan Stubbs led the Sunrisers’ run chase with a responsible 30-run knock and also put on a match-winning partnership with Jansen (16) before Fuller completed the pursuit with two back-to-back boundaries in the final over.

Smith led the bowling attack for MI Cape Town with 3/23 while Sam Curran bagged 2/37. Rashid, however, made one scalp.

Put into bat first, MI Cape Town could only amass 158/8 in 20 overs despite a quickfire 63-run knock by George Linde as the rest of the batters failed against Sunrisers’ bowlers.

Linde top-scored for his side with 63 off just 28 balls and hit four fours and five sixes.

Besides him, only Rassie van der Dussen remained the notable run-getter with his 22-ball 29.

Ottniel Baartman was the pick of the bowlers for the Sunrisers as he returned with 3/45 while Markram claimed 2/8. Sisanda Magala and Jansen picked two and a wicket respectively.
