ICC World Cup 2023: Who will qualify for the final if semi-final gets washed out?

KOLKATA: Australian pace bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood rattled South Africa’s top order in the 2nd Semi-Final of the ICC World Cup 2023, but, the action was halted after 14 overs due to rain at Eden Gardens.

The match was then resumed after a brief rain interruption, however, there is a prediction of more rain in the city today and tomorrow, which leaves the possibility of a complete washout open.

South Africa holds an advantage in that case as in case of a washout, they will qualify for the final, owing to their superior position in the points table at the group stage of the ICC World Cup 2023.

South Africa and Australia both won seven matches and earned 14 points during the group stage but the former ended at second position with a better net run rate – 1.261.

But, before the match is abandoned, umpires would make an effort to complete the match as the knockout matches during ICC events have a reserve day.

In case of more rain interruptions during the scheduled day, the first priority would be to reduce overs and complete the match on the same day. Notably, each team must play at least 20 overs to get a result.

The game will only enter the reserve day if 20-over play is not possible on that day.

If the rain persists for two days and does not allow at least 20 overs per side, then the match will be ‘no result’ and South Africa will qualify for the final for the first time.

The host nation India have already qualified for the final, after thumping New Zealand by 70 runs during the first semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Travis Head calls his injury a ‘blessing in disguise’

Australia opener Travis Head made a late entry into the ICC World Cup 2023 after recovering from a fractured hand but on Tuesday said the injury was a “blessing in disguise”.

Five-time winners Australia take on South Africa in the second semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday where Head will renew his rivalry with fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, whose ball caused the damage.

A Coetzee rising delivery struck Head on the left arm in the third one-day international of Australia’s tour of South Africa in September and scans revealed a fracture.

Head was in danger of missing the World Cup but Australia kept him in the squad until he was fit to play in the team’s sixth league match where he hit a match-winning century against New Zealand.

Reminded about facing Coetzee, who has claimed 18 wickets in seven matches at the tournament, Head said injuries are part and parcel of sport.

“I said to Gerald at the time I’m sure he didn’t mean to hit me in the hand. It was probably aimed a little bit higher than that,” Head, a left-hand batsman, joked.

“But that’s all part of the game. So I take a relaxed approach to all that sort of stuff whether it’s performance or injuries.”

He said: “He did me a favour, I got four weeks at home with the family, so I got refreshed to come back. And hopefully, I can be refreshed and energised and can perform at the back end of the tournament. It might be a blessing in disguise.”

Head smashed a 67-ball 109 in the must-win match against New Zealand but misfired in the next three with scores of 11, 0 and 10.

Travis Head, 29, said his style is not an all-out attack. He is just as content playing the waiting game as well.

“I feel like I try and give myself the best chance to score off balls that I feel like I can and respect the ones in between,” he said.

“I think you have to do that. It’s international cricket, so I don’t think it’s all guns blazing every time.

“So it’s a balancing act. I feel like I’m in a good mindset to give myself the best chance to be as positive as I can be.”

Australia won seven straight matches in the league stage of the ICC World Cup 2023 and remain two wins away from their sixth title.

“I’m sure everyone has thought about that,” Head said. “It hasn’t really been spoken about as a group, but we know what’s at the end of this tournament and what’s up for grabs.”

Travis Head has featured in 62 ODIs for Australia since his debut in 2016 and scored 2,194 runs.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz then played 21 and 29-run cameos respectively, while Hridoy held on to one end, scoring 74 runs from 79 balls, before getting caught by Labuschagne off Marcus Stoinis.

Bangladesh managed to score 306 at a loss of eight wickets in their allocated 50 overs, with Hridoy topping the runs chart.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa picked two wickets each.

First Pakistan vs Australia Test to be named as ‘West Test’

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced that the first Test match of the three-match Test series between Australia and Pakistan which is scheduled to be held at Perth Stadium will be named ‘The West Test’, inspired by WACA ground’s traditions.

The stadium which has a capacity of 60,000 seats will undergo a makeover for the “The West Test” just to bring some energy to the WACA ground, meanwhile, the four bays of seating will be temporarily removed which is branded as NRMA Insurance Test against Pakistan.

The three-tiered grassed area features three tiers and has the capacity of 500 spectators at a time on ‘The West Test Hill’.

The West Test Hill will include a family area with games for children and ample shaded seating spaces for fans to relax and enjoy the first Test match of the summer.

Additionally, the CommBank Women’s International Series Test match between Australia and South Africa will also carry The West Test name, creating continuity between the women’s and men’s game and Test cricket across the state’s two venues.

The Gabba has in the past featured a pool deck, and in recent years ‘The Boundary Social’ was a big hit in Melbourne and Sydney, and now WA is following suit with a new way for fans to enjoy the cricket.

Cricket Australia General Manager, Events & Operations Joel Morrison, said:

“International cricket in Perth has always been one of the great events of the Australian summer.

“The ‘West Test’ will take this to another level combining world-class action on the field with brilliant experiences for fans within the stadium, including on ‘The Hill’ thanks to the support of NRMA Insurance.

“The historic rivalry between Australia and Pakistan has been rekindled since our long-awaited tour to Pakistan last year so there is no better way to launch men’s international cricket this summer via the West Test in one of the world’s great cities.”

WA Cricket CEO, Christina Matthews, said:

“The West Test will give Western Australians something to be proud of – Women’s and Men’s Test matches that feel uniquely ours and showcase our brilliant stadia to the world.

The first step in the transformation of our Men’s Test is The Hill, providing WA cricket fans with a new way to experience Australia’s clash with Pakistan at our world class Perth Stadium.

“We look forward to working with CA and all partners in the game to continue developing The West Test event as we move towards series against India and England in coming years.”

Australia rest England’s World Cup 2023 hopes with 33-run victory

AHMEDABAD: Adam Zampa-led bowling attack powered Australia to a 33-run victory over arch-rivals England and moved within touching distance to make it to the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase 287, England’s batting unit unfolded in the 49th over and could score 253 runs in response.

Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes raised England’s hopes for their first victory after four consecutive losses when they put together a gritty 74-run stand for the third wicket.

The pair appeared to have settled down but Australia skipper Pat Cummins got the all-important breakthrough for his side by getting rid of Malan, who scored 50. His 64-ball knock included four boundaries and a six.

Australia’s pick of the bowlers Adam Zampa gave the five-time champions another success, a couple of overs later, by dismissing England captain Jos Buttler.

Meanwhile, Stokes stood his ground firm and put together a 63-run partnership with Moeen Ali, who scored 42 in 43 deliveries.

Zampa broke the stand when Stokes mistimed a paddle sweep straight to short fine-leg and departed after top scoring for England with a 90-ball 64.

Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali’s dismissals in quick succession resulted in England slipping to 186/7 in the 40th over.

Tailenders Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid offered notable fightback at the backend but their efforts were not enough as Australia ran away with a hard-fought victory.

Woakes scored 32 in 33 deliveries while Rashid hit a 15-ball 20.

Zampa led the bowling attack for Australia with 3/21 in his 10 overs while Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc bagged two wickets each.

Put into bat first, Australia had a dismal start to their innings as they lost their in-form openers Travis Head (11) and David Warner (15) inside six overs with just 38 runs on the board.

Following the back-to-back dismissals, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne anchored the proceedings with a gritty 75-run partnership.

Smith remained a notable run-getter for Australia with 44 in 52 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Labuschagne was then involved in yet another important partnership for Australia as he added 61 runs for the fifth wicket with Cameron Green before finally perishing in the 33rd over.

He fell shy of his well-deserved half-century, scoring 47 in 52 deliveries, hitting five boundaries.

Stoinis soon followed Green’s footsteps back to the pavilion as he fell for a 32-ball 35 in the 44th over with 241 runs on the board.

Adam Zampa then played a vital 29-run cameo at the backend to bolster his side’s total while skipper Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc contributed with a 10 each.
