ICC World Cup 2023: Pakistan team reaches Bengaluru for Australia clash

Pakistan Men’s cricket team landed in Bengaluru through a chartered plane from Ahmedabad on Sunday for their next ICC World Cup 2023 fixture against Australia, scheduled on October 20.

Upon their arrival, the Pakistan contingent will enjoy a rest day today while the details of their training sessions are not known yet.

Pakistan, currently sitting fourth in the ICC World Cup 2023 standings with four points in three matches, will lock horns with five-time champions Australia on Friday, who are on a four-match losing streak, two of which came in the ongoing tournament.

The green shirts, on the contrary, will be eyeing to bounce back from their seven-wicket thrashing against India on Saturday.

Rohit Sharma’s quickfire 86 after a combined effort from the bowlers led India to a dominant victory against Pakistan.

Chasing a modest total of 192, India comfortably steered to glory for the loss of just three wickets and 117 balls to spare.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma gave the hosts a head start by charging on the Pakistan bowlers right from the start.

He top-scored for India in the pursuit with a quickfire 63-ball 86 which featured six boundaries and as many sixes.

Shreyas Iyer took the reigns of India’s pursuit after Rohit’s dismissal and knitted a match-winning 36-run partnership with KL Rahul, who scored 19 not out.

Iyer remained a notable contributor in India’s pursuit with an unbeaten half-century. His 62-ball 53 featured three boundaries and two sixes.

Put into bat first, Pakistan could post 191 runs on the board despite their captain Babar Azam’s half-century.

The former champions, at one stage, were looking in a strong position to amass the 300-run mark but a middle-order collapse, resulted in them bowling out at a meagre total.

Babar Azam remained the top-scorer for his side with 50 in 58 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

Wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan was the other notable run-getter for Pakistan with a 69-ball 49, hitting seven boundaries.

Injured Travis Head shares World Cup return plans

Travis Head is all set to join the Australia squad at the ICC World Cup 2023 as the batter returned to the nets for the first time since he suffered a fractured hand in South Africa.

The left-handed batter, who was named in the 15-member World Cup squad despite copping a fracture to his left hand during the South Africa series, has recovered faster than expected.

Travis Head had the protective splint removed from his hand late last week and since then has been active in the nets.

According to reports, Head has faced more throw downs in the practice nets and will fly out to India this Thursday.

He’ll be unavailable still for the clash against Pakistan, Australia’s fourth game of the tournament, in Bengaluru, but could potentially return for the Netherlands game in Delhi on October 25.

“It’s coming along well, and probably better than we hoped,” Travis Head said in an interview with cricket.com.au.

“When we decided not to go with surgery, which would have meant a 10-week recovery, we were told it would be minimum six weeks with the splint before we could look at playing again,” he said.

He added, “Going by that plan, the Netherlands game will be just under six weeks from impact which is a pretty aggressive date so everything would have to go perfectly from here to make that deadline”.

“But we’ll just see how it progresses over the next few days and I’m excited by the prospect of joining the boys over there later in the week,” the batter concluded.

Any of the Australian batters are yet to score a half-century in the tournament and have been bowled out for 199 and 177 in their two games.

Travis Head’s return will be timely for the Australia, who are on a four-match losing streak, two of them coming in this year’s edition, at the World Cup 2023.

With two losses in two games and Mitchell Marsh making scores of 0 and 7 from Head’s position at the top, the Aussies will be glad to have the left-hander back partnering David Warner.

Travis Head’s ODI record at the top of the order is mind-blowing with him averaging over 50 and scoring at a rate of 112.35 as opener in the format.

Quinton de Kock, bowlers propel South Africa to humble Australia

LUCKNOW: Quinton de Kock scored his second consecutive century before a combined bowling effort led South Africa to thrash Australia by 134 runs in the 10th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Chasing a massive 312-run total, Australia succumbed to their second consecutive defeat in the ongoing mega event after they were bundled out on a paltry 177 in the 41st over.

The five-time champions had a poor start to the pursuit as they lost both their openers Mitchell Marsh (7) and David Warner (13) with just 27 runs on the board.

Marnus Labuschagne joined experienced Steve Smith in the middle and looked to anchor the run chase with a cautious partnership.

The duo, however, could add just 23 runs to the total before Smith perished after being trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada, a decision which caused a debate among cricket fans.

Smith could score 19 off 16 deliveries before walking back to the pavilion in disbelief.

Australia then lost three more wickets in quick succession to further slip to 70/6 in the 17th over.

Following the slump, Labucshagne put on a fighting seventh-wicket partnership with Mitchell Starc and added 74 runs to the total.

The duo frustrated the ruthless South African bowling attack before Marco Jansen drew a much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Starc, who scored a gutsy 51-ball 27.

Marnus Labuschagne soon followed Starc back into the dugout in the next over.

He remained the top-scorer for Australia with 46 in 74 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.

Australian captain Pat Cummins scored a 21-ball 22 at the backend but could not save his side from succumbing to a massive defeat.

Kagiso Rabada led the bowling attack for South Africa with 3/33, followed by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Tabraiz Shamsi, who picked two each.

De Kock carried the momentum from South Africa’s crushing 102-run victory over Sri Lanka in their ICC World Cup 2023 opener, where he scored an 84-ball century.

After being put into bat by Australia, De Kock raised his half-century in 51 balls, while his opening partner Temba Bavuma (35) played an anchoring innings on the other end.

Together they put up a 108-run opening stand, which was broken by Glenn Maxwell when Bavuma in an attempt to shift gears caught by David Warner at deep mid-wicket.

Rassie van der Dussen joined de Kock and added 50 runs for the second wicket before Zampa got him out at a total of 158 in the 29th over.

De Kock on the other end continued to bat fluently and reached his 19th ODI hundred in 90 balls, but Maxwell struck again and bowled the left-hander on 109. His 106-ball knock featured eight boundaries and five sixes.

Following de Kock’s departure, Aiden Markram took control and added 60 runs with Heinrich Klaasen for the fourth wicket, completing his half-century in the process.

He was dismissed by Pat Cummins after scoring 44-ball 56, featuring seven boundaries and one six.

Klaasen could only manage 29 off 27 before Marco Jansen propelled the South African total to 311 with a 22-ball cameo of 26 runs.

Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc picked two wickets each, while Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa managed to take one apiece.

Pat Cummins sees ICC World Cup 2023 as ‘physically taxing’ for bowlers

Australia captain Pat Cummins described the ICC World Cup 2023 as the “most physically taxing” format for fast bowlers as batters piled up record scores around India.

With just six of 45 days ticked off, the 2023 tournament has already seen South Africa score the highest-ever World Cup total of 428.

That came against Sri Lanka in New Delhi where the two innings produced a tournament record 754 runs.

Aiden Markram clubbed the fastest World Cup century in 49 balls in that game while, on Tuesday, Pakistan chased down a record target of 345 to beat Sri Lanka.

In a further bout of misery for bowlers, 10 centuries have been scored over the first eight games.

“It’s actually quite a physical format, I find it probably the most physically taxing if you’re playing two or three games in a week,” said Cummins ahead of their second World Cup match against South Africa on Thursday.

“We’re doing 15kms in a 50-over match. I think in T20, if you bowl one really good over, that can be match-winning.

“In one-day cricket, that’s not normally the case. And it’s rare that the conditions are really in the bowler’s favour, which is fine. It’s just a challenge you’ve got to try and deal with.”

Sri Lankan bowlers have supplied a snapshot of the challenge described by Pat Cummins.

In their loss to South Africa, seamers Kasun Rajitha and Matheesha Pathirana conceded 185 runs between them.

Pathirana suffered again as Pakistan ran riot in Hyderabad on Tuesday, giving away another 90 runs in his 10 overs.

Five-time champions Australia suffered a six-wicket loss to India in their ICC World Cup 2023 opener, ironically in a rare low-scoring encounter at Chennai.

After bowling the Aussies out for just 199, India reached their target inside 42 overs with Virat Kohli surviving a dropped chance on 12 to make a match-winning 85.

Cummins went wicketless in that match and took just two wickets in two ODIs Australia played against India in the run-up to the tournament.

“I’m really happy where it is,” he said of his form in ODI cricket where he has 126 wickets at an average of just over 28.

“I feel like it’s in as good a place as it ever has been. I think early in my career, I found it a hard balance between Test cricket and T20, like getting too funky.

“I always find with one-day cricket; your roles can be very different. It’s a different kind of challenge to the other formats.”

Pat Cummins said his team will be ready for familiar foes South Africa.

The Proteas won a recent series between the two teams 3-2 after trailing 0-2.

“It always feels like it’s a clash of two very similar teams,” said Cummins.

“So yeah, no doubt it will be another great game tomorrow. We always match up quite similarly against them.”

Unlike Australia’s struggles in their ICC World Cup 2023 opener, South Africa had three centurions — Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Markram — firing against Sri Lanka.

“They’ve always got some fast bowlers and some batters that take the game on, maybe a leg-spinner. So, it always feels like it’s a clash of two very similar teams,” said Cummins.

Cummins said allrounder Marcus Stoinis was fit and available after missing the first match with a hamstring injury.

“He’s fit so yeah, we’ll announce a team tomorrow but it’s a ground he knows pretty well,” said Pat Cummins of Stoinis who plays for the Lucknow team in the Indian Premier League.

“I think chatting to him and a couple of other guys, it’s probably in a bit of a different condition to what it is for the IPL. The wicket looks really good.”

Australia will, however, continue to be without opener Travis Head, nursing a hand injury.

India launch triumphant ICC World Cup 2023 campaign at Australia’s disposal

CHENNAI: Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scored anchoring half-centuries after a disciplined performance by the bowlers as India edged Australia by six wickets in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Sunday.

Set to chase a modest 200, India knocked off the winning runs for the loss of four wickets and 52 balls to spare.

The hosts, however, had a dismal start to their pursuit as they lost three batters with just two runs on the board as Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer all fell for duck.

Following the slump, KL Rahul joined Virat Kohli in the middle and the duo launched an astounding recovery.

Kohli and Rahul soaked in the pressure and put India in command with a magnificent 165-run partnership which lasted when Kohli fired his pull shot straight to Marnus Labuschagne at mid-wicket in the 38th over.

Star batter Virat Kohli fell short of his well-deserved century as he scored 85. His 116-ball knock featured six boundaries.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul held his ground firm and carried his bat all the way through to guide India to a hard-fought victory to launch their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a victory.

He also fell just shy of his century, scoring an unbeaten 97 in 115 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Josh Hazlewood led the bowling attack for Australia with 3/38 in his nine overs while Mitchell Starck had a wicket to his name.

After opting to bat first, Australia lost their first wicket in the third over as Mitchell Marsh fell with only five runs on the board.

David Warner and Steve Smith then stabilised the innings with a partnership of 69, before Kuldeep Yadav grabbed a returning catch to send the former back to the pavilion.

Warner scored 47 off 52 with the help of six boundaries, becoming the fastest man to score 1000 World Cup runs in 19 innings.

Steve Smith followed him after anchoring through the innings with his 46 from 71 deliveries, featuring five boundaries before Ravindra Jadeja knocked his off-stump when Australia had 110 runs on the board.

Indian spinners took charge from there and rattled the Australian batting line, reducing them to 140-7 in the 37th over.

Mitchell Starc showed some resistance with two brief partnerships of 25 and 24 runs with Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa respectively.

Indian pacers then returned to the attack and picked the final three wickets to wrap Australian innings at 199.

Starc scored a gutsy knock of 28 runs from 35 balls with the help of two boundaries and one six.

Ravindra Jadeja topped the bowling charts with his aforementioned bowling figures, while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each.

Babar’s 90 not enough as Australia edge Pakistan to seal World Cup warm-up

HYDERABAD: Fifties from Iftikhar Ahmed, Babar Azam and Mohammad Nawaz were not enough as five-time champions Australia edged out Pakistan by 14 runs in the warm-up match to boast their preparations for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase a daunting total of 352, Pakistan narrowly missed pulling off a confidence-boosting victory as they were bundled out on 337 in response.

Pakistan got off to a dismal start to the pursuit as they lost four wickets with just 83 runs on the board in the 15th over.

Following the slump, Pakistan’s regular captain Babar Azam joined Iftikhar Ahmed in the middle and the pair launched an astonishing recovery.

Babar and Iftikhar put together brisk 144 runs, the majority of which, however, came against part-time bowlers like Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner and Steve Smith.

The pair dominated the part-time bowlers and had put Pakistan in command before Labuschagne broke the stand by dismissing Iftikhar, who scored 83 in 85 balls, hitting six boundaries and four sixes.

Babar, on the other hand, put on a brief partnership with Salman Ali Agha before opting to retire by the end of the 36th over.

He remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a quickfire 90 which came off 59 balls and laced with 11 boundaries and two sixes.

Following Babar’s departure, Australia brought in their main bowlers and piled up pressure on the Pakistan batting tail, which crumbled and yielded wickets at regular intervals, resulting in the Green Shirts being bowled out in the 48th over.

Marnus Labuschagne led the bowling attack for Australia with three wickets, followed by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh with two each while Sean Abbott and Glenn Maxwell made one scalp each.

Australian batters justified the decision of their captain Pat Cummins to bowl first as they made the most of the batting-friendly pitch to pile up a massive total in their last warm-up fixture before they take on hosts India in the campaign opener on Sunday.

Australia’s opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh scripted a solid start to their innings as they dominated the Pakistan bowlers amid their brisk 83-run partnership.

Australian openers appeared to be heading towards the 100-run mark before Usama Mir pulled things back as he removed both set batters in his successive overs to mark Pakistan’s comeback.

Warner scored a 33-ball 48, hitting four boundaries and three sixes while Marsh played a cautious 31-run knock.

With the scoreboard reading 92/2 in 14.1 overs, experienced batter Steve Smith joined forces with Marnus Labuschagne and the duo kept Australia in command with a vital third-wicket partnership.

Smith (27) and Labuschagne (40) carried the momentum and added 59 runs to the total before they both fell in consecutive overs as Australia slipped to 153/4 in the 25th over.

Pakistan bowlers were looking confident to make a comeback after back-to-back success but Glenn Maxwell, coming out to at number six, launched an astounding counterattack.

The all-rounder smashed four boundaries and six sixes on his way to top score for Australia with a 71-ball 77 before finally perishing in the 41st over with 255 runs on the board.

He also stitched a magnificent 83-run partnership with Cameron Green, who, alongside Josh Inglis, added vital runs for Australia at the backend and returned with an unbeaten half-century.

Green scored 50 not out in 40 balls while Inglis fell just shy of his half-century as he scored 48 off just 30 deliveries.

Usama Mir was the pick among the bowlers for Pakistan, claiming 2/31 in his five while Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz picked one each.
