Key Zimbabwe player ruled out of T20 World Cup 2026

COLOMBO: Zimbabwe have suffered a major setback in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign after veteran wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury.

The development was confirmed by Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza at the toss ahead of their ongoing fixture against the Australia national cricket team in Colombo on Friday.

Taylor, 40, sustained the injury during Zimbabwe’s opening match of the tournament against Oman.

He was forced to retire hurt after scoring 31 off 30 deliveries, having earlier contributed behind the stumps with three catches.

Team management had monitored his recovery closely, hoping he would regain fitness for the latter stages, but the experienced batter has now been officially ruled out.

Zimbabwe are yet to announce a replacement, although a decision is expected soon with at least two group matches still to play in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

In Taylor’s absence, Tadiwanashe Marumani has taken over wicketkeeping duties against Australia, while all-rounder Tony Munyonga has been drafted into the playing XI.

Taylor’s latest setback comes months after his return to international cricket in July 2025, following a three-and-a-half-year suspension for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code.

Since completing his ban, he featured in two Tests, two ODIs and 14 T20Is for Zimbabwe, scoring 282 runs, including a memorable 123 against Botswana in a T20 World Cup qualifying match last year.

ICC bans Brendan Taylor for anti-corruption, doping breaches

DUBAI: International Cricket Council has banned the former Zimbabwe captain – Brendan Taylor after he accepted four charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and one separate charge of breaching the Anti-Doping Code.

According to ICC, Taylor has been handed a three-and-a-half-year ban from all forms of cricket over several breaches of the ICC Corruption Code.

Taking to Twitter, the ICC shared the news of Taylor’s ban.

On the former captain’s ban, Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager of the Integrity Unit said it is disappointing that a player of his experience chose not to fulfil those obligations.

“Over such a long career, he participated in numerous anti-corruption and anti-doping education sessions and knew exactly what his obligations were under the ICC Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping Codes,” he stated.

“It is disappointing that a player of his experience chose not to fulfil those obligations, however, he has accepted all charges, which has been reflected in the sanction,” he added.

It is worth mentioning here that the 35-years-old shared his full statement following this plight situation on Twitter earlier this week.

In the statement, Taylor shared his explanation regarding the illegal sponsorship approach by an Indian businessman and feared that the ICC may hand him a multi-year ban.

‘ICC may impose a multi-year ban on me’ Brendan Taylor

DUBAI: Former Zimbabwean captain – Brendan Taylor claimed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) may impose a multi-year ban on him after he allegedly delayed reporting a corrupt approach by an Indian businessman.

As per the international media, Taylor revealed that the ICC is about to impose a multi-year ban on his international career after he allegedly failed to timely inform the cricketing body regarding a corrupt approach.

Taylor, on the other hand, claimed that the right-handed batter delayed the reporting; citing the wellbeing of his family.

“It took me 4 months to report this offence and interaction to the ICC. I acknowledge this was too long of a time but I thought I could protect everyone and in particular, my family,” he said.

The veteran Zimbabwean batter also stated that he hoped that the ICC will understand his plight but they did not.

“I approached the ICC on my own terms and I hoped that if I explained my predicament, my genuine fear for our safety and wellbeing, they would understand the delay,” he said.

“Unfortunately, they did not, but I cannot feign ignorance in this regard. I have attended many anti-corruption seminars over the years and we know that time is of the essence when making reports,” he concluded.
