Arshdeep Singh fined for Daryl Mitchell incident

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday reprimanded Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh for violating the code of conduct during the final against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026.

The 27-year-old was fined 15 per cent of the match fee for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Article 2.9 of the ICC code of conduct relates to throwing a ball or any other item of cricket equipment at or near a player in an inappropriate manner.

Arshdeep threw the ball towards New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell on his follow-through, hitting the batter on the pads during the 11th over of the match.

The pacer walked back to his mark without apologizing, resulting in a confrontation with the batter.

Following the completion, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav intervened to speak with Daryl Mitchell while the umpire Richard Illingworth was also seen having a brief word with Arshdeep

Eventually, the left-arm pacer apologised to Mitchell after the completion of the over.

Arshdeep accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, denying a need for a formal hearing.

The charge was brought by the match officials — on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Allahuddien Palekar, and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.

This was Arshdeep Singh’s first offence in a 24-month period with a level 1 breach carrying a minimum penalty of a reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s march fee and one or two demerit points.

Daryl Mitchell dethrones Virat Kohli as No.1 ranked ODI batter

DUBAI: New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell on Wednesday surpassed Virat Kohli to claim the No.1 spot in the latest ICC Men’s ODI batting rankings.

The 34-year-old now sits in the top position with 845 ranking points, replacing Kohli, who drops to the second spot with 795 points.

Kohli’s stay at the top was short-lived, having held the position for just a week despite an impressive series against New Zealand.

The Hamilton-born batting all-rounder rose to the top spot on the back of his stellar series against India, where he amassed 352 runs across three games, hence playing a vital role in the BlackCaps first ODI series win on Indian soil.

Mitchell rose to the top spot on the back of his stellar series against India, where he amassed 352 runs across three games, hence playing a vital role in the BlackCaps first ODI series win on Indian soil.

Mitchell started the series with an 81 off 71 balls, top-scoring for his side, which was followed by an unbeaten 131 off 117. His century helped New Zealand level the series and earned him the Player of the Match award.

In the final game, Daryly Mitchell put on a batting masterclass, scoring 137 from 131 deliveries, which propelled his side to a massive 337-run total.

Notably, Mitchell’s tally of 352 runs is the highest ever by a Kiwi player in a three-match ODI series and the third highest of all time.

Only Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who amassed 360 runs against the West Indies in 2016, and India’s Shubman Gill, who scored 360 runs against New Zealand in 2023, sit above him on the list.

Besides Mitchell and Kohli, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran climbed to third place, replacing Rohit Sharma.

Meanwhile, there were no major changes for Pakistan players in the overall rankings.

Mitchell’s 131* powers New Zealand to easy win over India

Daryl Mitchell struck an unbeaten 131 to lead New Zealand to a series-levelling seven-wicket win over India in the second one-day international on Wednesday.

Chasing 285 for victory, Mitchell’s eighth ODI ton and a 162-run stand with Will Young (87) for the third wicket helped New Zealand reach their target with 15 balls to spare in Rajkot.

Mitchell’s knock trumped an unbeaten 112 by KL Rahul in India’s 284-7 and forced the three-match series into a decider on Sunday in Indore.

Mitchell walked in to bat with New Zealand on 46-2 and along with Young helped the Black Caps take control.

Young fell to Kuldeep Yadav in the 38th over but Mitchell stood firm to bring up his hundred.

He hit 11 fours and two sixes in his 117-ball innings and, with Glenn Phillips, who made 32 not out, put together an unbeaten stand of 78.

Indian bowlers enjoyed early success when Harshit Rana bowled Devon Conway, who made 16, and fellow quick Prasidh Krishna had Henry Nicholls inside-edge a delivery onto his stumps for 10.

But Mitchell, who was dropped on 80, and Young struck regular boundaries as New Zealand completed their highest-ever ODI chase in India.

Earlier, India skipper Shubman Gill made 56 before a brief collapse and a 73-run fifth-wicket partnership between KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja.

Rahul raised his eighth ODI ton in 87 balls with a six off Kyle Jamieson.

India started strongly courtesy of Gill and Rohit Sharma, who scored 24, as the opening pair put on 70 runs.

Rohit failed to capitalise on his start and fell to Kristian Clarke, before pace spearhead Jamieson sent back Gill.

Clarke kept up the charge with his medium-pace bowling to dismiss Shreyas Iyer for eight and the in-form Virat Kohli for 23.

The 37-year-old Kohli, who returned to the top of the ODI batting rankings on Wednesday, walked back to stunned silence after he played on as India slipped from 99-1 to 118-4.

Rahul then took centre stage to rebuild the innings along with Jadeja, who made 27.

The series will be followed by five T20s, ahead of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka between February 7 and March 8.

Daryl Mitchell in doubt for remainder of West Indies ODI series

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell could miss the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against West Indies after sustaining a groin strain during his match-winning century in Christchurch.

Mitchell’s brilliant 119 off 118 balls helped New Zealand edge the visitors by just seven runs in the series opener, but the injury now casts doubt on his availability for the rest of the series.

Mitchell will remain in Christchurch to undergo scans to determine the severity of the strain, while left-hander Henry Nicholls has been called up for the second ODI in Napier on Wednesday.

Nicholls, who last featured in an ODI in April, has been in outstanding domestic form this season, topping the Ford Trophy run charts with 306 runs at an average of 76.50, including back-to-back centuries against Otago and Auckland.

Mark Chapman also remains as the other spare batter in the squad, boasting an impressive 101.33 average from four ODIs this year.

Notably, New Zealand’s squad is already dealing with multiple injuries, with Mohammad Abbas (ribs), Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring) all sidelined.

Kane Williamson, who recently battled a minor groin issue against England, was rested from the ODI series to focus on preparations for New Zealand’s upcoming Test matches against West Indies.

Mitchell’s final over hands Texas Super Kings a thrilling win over MI New York

OAKLAND: A death-bowling masterclass from Daryl Mitchell helped Texas Super Kings seal a dramatic three-run win over MI New York in the second match of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 at the Oakland Coliseum on Friday.

Chasing 186, MI New York needed just 9 runs off the final over with two wickets in hand, but Mitchell held his nerve, mixing yorkers with slower ones to perfection, and conceded only five to snatch victory for his side.

Earlier, Texas Super Kings posted 185/6 after being put into bat, with Devon Conway anchoring the innings and Calvin Savage providing late fireworks.

Conway and Faf du Plessis got the Super Kings off to a cautious start, adding 39 off 38 balls before Ehsan Adil removed the skipper. Conway then watched wickets tumble at the other end as the Kings slipped to 96-5.

However, a crucial sixth-wicket stand between Conway and Savage rescued the innings. The duo added 79 runs in just 47 balls to take the team past the 170-mark.

Conway was eventually run out for a superb 65 off 44, featuring seven boundaries and five sixes. Savage remained unbeaten on 53 from 34 balls, ensuring Texas finished with a competitive total in the second match of the MLC 2025.

Michael Bracewell was the pick of the MI bowlers with 2-34, while Ehsan Adil, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Sunny Patel chipped in with a wicket each.

MI New York’s chase got off to a shaky start as Adam Milne dismissed openers Agni Chopra (5) and Quinton de Kock (8) inside four overs.

The early blows worsened when Nicholas Pooran fell to Noor Ahmad for just 6, leaving the side reeling at 24-3.

Monank Patel and Michael Bracewell then led a remarkable recovery, stitching together 97 runs in just 48 balls.

Patel looked in sublime touch, bringing up his half-century off 33 deliveries. Bracewell was looking set for a big one but fell for 38 after Faf du Plessis pulled off a spectacular one-handed catch at mid-off.

With the equation narrowing, Kieron Pollard stepped up with a brisk 32 off 16.

But just as it seemed MI New York were cruising, Daryl Mitchell produced a game-changing moment, running Pollard out, and then dismissing a well-set Monank Patel off the very next delivery with another run-out.

Patel top-scored with 62 off 44, but his dismissal triggered a collapse. Only three boundaries came in the final three overs as the asking rate climbed.

Mitchell’s final over, yielding just three runs off the bat, plus a bye and a leg-bye, proved decisive as MI New York fell short, finishing at 182-8.

Adam Milne led the bowling charts with 3-22, while Noor Ahmad and Mohammad Mohsin picked up a wicket each in a tightly contested MLC 2025 match.

Daryl Mitchell clears the air about playing in Pakistan amidst Indian media reports

New Zealand’s all-rounder Daryl Mitchell shared his thoughts regarding the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, clarifying Indian media reports suggesting he would not visit the country in the future.

The tensions between India and Pakistan reached fever-pitch following an attack last month in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) town of Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists.

However, the situation returned to normal after an immediate ceasefire on Saturday, following days of deadly jet fighter, missile, drone and artillery attacks.

Due to the growing tensions, PSL 10 was postponed indefinitely, leading to the return of overseas players to their home countries.

Mitchell, who was playing for Lahore Qalandars, was also among the players who returned home after the marquee event’s postponement.

Meanwhile, several Indian media outlets reported that Mitchell vowed to not play in Pakistan again.

In a statement released by Lahore Qalandars, Daryl Mitchell shared his thoughts on the conflict between the two countries while on his way back home.

“It’s been tough to watch two countries that are so close to my heart in conflict over the past few days. My thoughts are with those affected on both sides,” Daryl Mitchell said.

The all-rounder stressed the importance of peace between both countries and expressed his determination to return in the future.

“Both the PSL and IPL have played major roles in my career, and I’ve always cherished my time in both tournaments. I hope peace prevails and we can get back to playing the game we love and continue giving back to the amazing people who support us,” said Mitchell.

“It feels good to be heading home to my family, but I’m also looking forward to returning to both countries in the future — places I truly love spending time in,” he concluded.

Conway, Mitchell tons power New Zealand to thump England in ODI opener

CARDIFF: Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell struck unbeaten hundreds as New Zealand cruised to a dominant eight-wicket win over England in the first ODI of the four-match ODI series in Cardiff on Friday.

The Black Caps, set 292 to win, finished on 297-2 with 26 balls remaining as they went 1-0 up in a four-match series.

Opening batsman Conway was 111 not out and Mitchell 118 not out, the pair sharing an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 180 in New Zealand’s first ODI against England since their agonising Super Over loss in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s.

The teams will also face each other in the first match of the World Cup in Ahmedabad on October 5.

“We thought England’s score was just above par, but the bowlers did well to restrict them on that surface,” said Conway at the presentation ceremony.

“We just knew that if we built those partnerships it would get us over the line.”

England captain Jos Buttler marked his 33rd birthday by top-scoring for his side with 72 in a total of 291-6.

Left-arm spinner Rachin Ravindra led a disciplined New Zealand attack with 3-48.

“Disappointing, at half-way I thought we actually had a pretty good score,” said Buttler.

He added: “Credit to them (Conway and Mitchell), it was a fantastic partnership.

Looking ahead to the rest of the series, he said: “It’s a quick turnaround so we’ll give opportunities and look after guys as well.

“But we also want to play good cricket. We want to win games and we know we’re up against a good team.”

England had to wait until the 11th over for a breakthrough when leg-spinner Adil Rashid bowled Will Young with his first ball to leave New Zealand 61-1.

Rashid was briefly off the field for cramp and Mitchell greeted his return with a six and a four off successive deliveries.

Left-hander Conway completed his fourth ODI hundred, off 115 balls including 13 fours.

Mitchell then hammered Rashid for 16 off three balls — two sixes separated by a four — as he went into the 90s before going to an 84-ball century.

Conway ended the match in style with a straight six off Liam Livingstone as New Zealand recorded their third successive white-ball win over England this tour after ending a Twenty20 series level at 2-2.

Buttler and the returning Ben Stokes (52) shared a fourth-wicket stand of 88 after England lost the toss.

Livingstone’s dashing 52 off 40 balls added late impetus after opener Dawid Malan made 54 as former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff returned to the England set-up by joining the coaching staff as a mentor.

Harry Brook was given another chance to push his World Cup claims after being drafted in as opener alongside Malan following injuries to Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

But Brook left out of the provisional squad for next month’s title defence in India, could only manage 25.

Instead, it was Malan who dominated an opening stand of 80 before being bowled off his pads for 54 by Ravindra.

Buttler, however, completed a 48-ball fifty.

Stokes, in his first ODI since reversing his retirement from the format ahead of the World Cup, went to the landmark with a six over midwicket off Ravindra only to be caught next ball when he slapped the bowler to cover.

The second ODI of the series will be played at Southampton on Sunday.

Blackcaps all-rounder Mitchell ruled out of Tri-series due to injury

CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been ruled out of the ongoing Tri-series against Pakistan and Bangladesh after he injured his right-hand finger on Friday.

According to the details, Mitchell sustained a blow to his hand while practising in the nets on Friday and an X-Ray revealed that he had fractured his fifth metacarpal (pinkie finger).

According to Blackcaps physio Theo Kapakoulakis, Mitchell’s injured hand has been placed in a cast and it will remain there for at least two more weeks.

New Zealand will play their first game of the Tri-series on Saturday (Tomorrow) against Pakistan.

With ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2022 just around the corner, Mitchell’s availability for the mega event in Australia would be under the clouds.

New Zealand team head coach, Gary Stead said any decision in this regard would be taken after assessing Mitchell’s recovery.

New Zealand are set to leave for Australia on October 15 while the final of the tri-nation series is scheduled on October 14.

Phillips, bowlers propel New Zealand to thrash West Indies in second T20I

KINGSTON: New Zealand middle-order batter Glenn Phillips impressed with a magnificent 76 before the bowlers decimated the West Indian batting line-up to bolster the touring side to seal a comprehensive 90-run victory in the second T20I.

Phillips-led New Zealand posted a mammoth 215 in the allotted as right-handed batter Daryl Mitchell also chipped in with a quickfire 48. The touring bowlers then displayed dominance over the hosts batters and restricted the latter on 125/9 in 20 overs.

Batting first, New Zealand were off to an unwanted start as the side lost two wickets for a mere 36 runs in four overs.

Devon Conway then anchored the inning with an important 69 runs partnership with Phillips and solidify the team’s position in the match before Obed McCoy struck his second to break the stand.

Conway scored 42 off 34 balls, laced with two boundaries and three sixes.

Following his departure, Phillips then joined hands with Mitchell and the pair added 83 runs for the fourth wicket at an astonishingly quick rate before the former fell after a brilliant knock of 76 runs. He faced 41 balls and smashed 10 boundaries including six sixes.

On the other hand, Mitchell fell two runs short of his well-deserved fifty in the 20th over. He scored 48 runs off a mere 20 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and four sixes.

For West Indies, McCoy led the way with three wickets while Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd made one scalp each.

Set to chase a humongous 216, the West Indian batting line failed entirely and could score 125/9 in the allotted 20 overs, thus losing the match by 90 runs.

The hosts had a forgetful start to their run chase as they lost half of their side at a combined score of 28. McCoy led the way with the bat too as he scored a gritty 23 down the order.

However, the dismal show by the rest of the batters resulted in him a second consecutive defeat for the West Indies.

Following this victory, New Zealand clinched the three-match series 2-0 with one match remaining.

Daryl Mitchell equals Sir Don Bradman’s 92-years-old record

LEEDS: New Zealand’s middle-order batter Daryl Mitchell equalled the Australian batting great Sir Don Bradman’s 92-years-old record in the recently-concluded Test series against England.

The recently-concluded Test series was majorly dominated by the home side as they whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 yesterday but if the touring side had to draw a positive from their frustrating outing, it would have surely been the splendid form of Mitchell.

The right-handed batter, who remained the top-scorer of the three-match series with 538 runs from six innings at an average of 107.6, registered a historic record to his name.

The 31-years-old scored 109 in the last Test and had earlier piled 108 at Lord’s and 190 at Trent Bridge. Following his triple tons, the Kiwi batter has become the only overseas batter after batting icon Sir Don Bradman to slam a ton in each of the first three Tests of a series in England.

Additionally, Mitchell is the only cricketer from New Zealand to score three successive hundreds against England in a Test series.

It is pertinent to mention here that England, under the new leadership of the head coach Brendon McCullum and the captain Ben Stokes drew cherishing results in their first assignment as they clean swept New Zealand 3-0.
