India women register first-ever Test victory over Australia

India’s women’s cricket team cruised to their first-ever win against Australia in Test cricket on Sunday, beating the visitors by eight wickets in a one-off match in Mumbai.

India dominated play in the four-day match at the Wankhede Stadium, smashing 406 runs in the first innings to take a 187-run lead.

On the final day, Australia knocked out 261, with India’s bowlers earning five wickets for just 28 runs, including right arm off-break Sneh Rana — later awarded player of the match — taking two wickets in two balls.

Set a target of 75, India’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s team chased down the runs in dramatic play in just under 19 overs for two wickets.

For India’s women, it was their first Test victory against Australia after 11 attempts since 1977.

It follows India’s victory against England last week, also in Mumbai.

Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary, celebrated the back-to-back Test wins.

“They conquered it with brilliance,” Shah posted on social media, praising skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. “History made today!”

India on December 16 thrashed England by 347 runs in another one-off women’s Test, their first-ever win at home against the rivals.

India’s victory margin against England was the largest by runs in women’s Test cricket and also their first Test win against England at home.

“Everything went very well for us,” Kaur told reporters on Sunday.

“Hopefully after these two wins we will get many more Test games in upcoming games.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan help India thrash Australia to go 2-0 up

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan led the batting charge for India to set up a convincing 44-run win over Australia in the second Twenty20 international on Sunday.

Jaiswal smashed a 25-ball 53 and fellow left-hander Kishan hit 52 off 32 deliveries to help India to 235-4 after being invited to bat first by Australia in Thiruvananthapuram.

Spinner Ravi Bishnoi and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna took three wickets each as the hosts kept Australia down to 191-9 and extended their lead to 2-0 in the five-match series.

Indian batters ruled as Yashasvi Jaiswal laid the foundations for India’s mammoth total with key contributions from fellow opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made 58, and Rinku Singh’s unbeaten nine-ball 31.

“The boys are not putting too much pressure on me. They are taking onus,” India skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who won his second successive match as national captain, said.

“I told them (players) before, be prepared to bat first. There was a lot of dew. We talked to defend it later.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal was named man of the match and said, “It was really special for me. I was trying to play all my shots. Was trying to be fearless. I was sure of my decisions.”

Jaiswal, who smashed nine fours and two sixes, raced to his fifty in 24 balls but soon fell to fast bowler Nathan Ellis, who got three wickets.

Ishan Kishan, a wicketkeeper-batsman, raised his fifty with a six off leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha before he got out to Marcus Stoinis.

But the left-handed Rinku Singh finished off the innings with a flurry of boundaries and sixes.

In reply, Australia fell to 58-4 including Steve Smith (19), previous-match centurion Josh Inglis (two) and Glenn Maxwell (12) back in the dug-out.

Tim David, who smashed 37, and Stoinis, who hit 45 off 25 balls, attempted to hit back in their partnership of 81 as the two hit six fours and six sixes between them.

Bishnoi broke the stand with his leg-spin to dismiss David who mistimed a hit to long-on.

Stoinis was the next to go as the wheels came off the chase and Krishna got two more to nearly end the batting team’s hopes.

Skipper Matthew Wade struck an unbeaten 42 off 23 balls to reduce the margin of loss for Australia, who last week lost the opener four days after being crowned champions of the ODI World Cup.

“We’re making the right decisions but aren’t executing in the right moments,” Australia coach Andre Borovec said.

The third T20 is on Tuesday in Guwahati.

David Warner reacts to Mohammad Kaif’s ‘best team on paper’ comment

Australian opening batter David Warner has responded to former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif over the latter’s statement about India being the ‘best team on paper’ despite the loss in the ICC World Cup 2023 final.

Indian team gave a dominant performance in the ICC World Cup 2023, remaining undefeated in ten games before the final, where they lost to Australia, who won their sixth World Cup title.

Mohammad Kaif, while talking to an Indian channel after the match claimed that ‘India is the best team on paper.’

“I can never accept that the best team has won the World Cup. The Indian Team is the best team on the paper,” said Kaif.

The way Rohit Sharma’s team has played, my chest swells with pride, it was just a bad day, it happens in the game,” he further added.

His statement garnered several reactions from the cricket fraternity, including Australian broadcaster Glenn Mitchell, who took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and reminded Mohammad Kaif that “World Cup finals are won on the cricket field and not on paper”.

David Warner also joined the fray and quoted Mitchell’s post with his own response stating that it does not matter which team is better on paper.

“I like MK [Mohammad Kaif], issue is it does not matter what’s on paper. At the end of the day you need to perform when it matters. That’s why they call it a final. That’s the day that counts and it can go either way, that’s sports. 2027 here we come,” posted Warner.

Moreover, Warner ended the post with ‘2027 here we come,’ warning other teams that Australia are eyeing another World Cup win four years down the line.

David Warner was the highest run-scorer for Australia and the fifth-highest run-scorer during the ICC World Cup 2023 with 535 runs at an average of 48.63 with two centuries.

The two sides meet again in the five-match T20I series, scheduled to commence on November 23 in Visakhapatnam.

Head-inspired Australia thump India to lift record sixth World Cup title

AHMEDABAD: Travis Head’s brisk 137-run knock paired up with Marnus Labuschagne’s unbeaten half-century led Australia to a convincing six-wicket victory over India to win the ICC World Cup 2023.

This is Australia’s sixth ODI World Cup title, having lifted the prestigious silverware on five occasions before in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015.

Set to chase a modest 241, Australia comfortably knocked off the winning runs in 43 overs, courtesy of a match-winning fourth-wicket partnership between Head and Labuschagne.

Australia found themselves in a state of bother earlier in the run chase when they slipped to 47/3 in just seven overs with in-form openers David Warner (7), Mitchell Marsh (15) and experienced batter Steve Smith (4) perishing cheaply.

India, who were on a 10-match winning streak were fancying their chances to defend a low score and to lift their third title but Head swept away their hopes.

The left-handed opener put together a match-winning 192-run partnership with Marnus Labushagne which put Australia in touching distance to their record victory.

Head was the core aggressor of the magnificent stand while Labuschagne batted cautiously to make sure he did not throw away his wicket.

The opener, however, could not score the winning runs for his team as he smashed a short delivery from Mohammed Siraj straight to Shubman Gill at deep midwicket.

Travis Head top-scored for Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 final with a brilliant 137. His 120-ball knock featured 15 boundaries and four sixes.

Coming out to bat at number five, Glenn Maxwell wasted no time and scored the winning runs for Australia as he pulled Siraj for a couple.

Labuschagne, who played an anchoring role in Australia’s World Cup victory remained unbeaten on 58. He faced 110 deliveries and hit four boundaries.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah bagged two wickets while Siraj and Shami could pick up a wicket.

Australia opted to bowl first and Mitchell Starc gave his side the first breakthrough when he dismissed Shubman Gill (4) with a mere 30 runs on board.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma however continued to attack and added 46 runs for the second wicket with Virat Kohli before perishing courtesy of a brilliant catch by Travis Head off Glenn Maxwell.

Sharma played a quick knock of 47 runs off 31 balls, featuring four boundaries and three sixes.

Australian captain Pat Cummins picked his first wicket as Shreyas Iyer (4) walked back to the pavilion in the next over with the scoreboard reading 81-3 in the 11th over.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul then knitted a cautious 67-run partnership for the fourth wicket lifting India’s total to 148 before Cummins bowled Kohli to silence the capacity crowd at the stadium.

Kohli played a solid 54-run knock from 63 balls with the help of four boundaries.

Australian bowlers kept their side in the dominant position with their disciplined bowling, not allowing Indian batters to score freely.

KL Rahul top-scored for India with a scratchy innings of 66 runs from 107 balls with a single boundary before getting caught behind off Mitchell Starc leaving his side reeling at 203-6 in the 42nd over.

Suryakumar Yadav then played a shaky innings of 18 runs off 28 balls amid falling wickets at the other end until Josh Hazlewood got him caught behind off a slower short-pitched delivery.

Australian bowlers wrapped up the Indian innings off the final ball of the innings as Kuldeep Yadav got run out with 240 runs on board.

Starc topped the wickets chart with three wickets, while Cummins and Hazlewood picked two wickets each.

India launch triumphant ICC World Cup 2023 campaign at Australia’s disposal

CHENNAI: Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scored anchoring half-centuries after a disciplined performance by the bowlers as India edged Australia by six wickets in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Sunday.

Set to chase a modest 200, India knocked off the winning runs for the loss of four wickets and 52 balls to spare.

The hosts, however, had a dismal start to their pursuit as they lost three batters with just two runs on the board as Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer all fell for duck.

Following the slump, KL Rahul joined Virat Kohli in the middle and the duo launched an astounding recovery.

Kohli and Rahul soaked in the pressure and put India in command with a magnificent 165-run partnership which lasted when Kohli fired his pull shot straight to Marnus Labuschagne at mid-wicket in the 38th over.

Star batter Virat Kohli fell short of his well-deserved century as he scored 85. His 116-ball knock featured six boundaries.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul held his ground firm and carried his bat all the way through to guide India to a hard-fought victory to launch their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a victory.

He also fell just shy of his century, scoring an unbeaten 97 in 115 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Josh Hazlewood led the bowling attack for Australia with 3/38 in his nine overs while Mitchell Starck had a wicket to his name.

After opting to bat first, Australia lost their first wicket in the third over as Mitchell Marsh fell with only five runs on the board.

David Warner and Steve Smith then stabilised the innings with a partnership of 69, before Kuldeep Yadav grabbed a returning catch to send the former back to the pavilion.

Warner scored 47 off 52 with the help of six boundaries, becoming the fastest man to score 1000 World Cup runs in 19 innings.

Steve Smith followed him after anchoring through the innings with his 46 from 71 deliveries, featuring five boundaries before Ravindra Jadeja knocked his off-stump when Australia had 110 runs on the board.

Indian spinners took charge from there and rattled the Australian batting line, reducing them to 140-7 in the 37th over.

Mitchell Starc showed some resistance with two brief partnerships of 25 and 24 runs with Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa respectively.

Indian pacers then returned to the attack and picked the final three wickets to wrap Australian innings at 199.

Starc scored a gutsy knock of 28 runs from 35 balls with the help of two boundaries and one six.

Ravindra Jadeja topped the bowling charts with his aforementioned bowling figures, while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each.

Famous pitch invader ‘Jarvo 69’ interrupts India-Australia World Cup fixture

CHENNAI: Serial pitch invader Daniel Jarvis, famously known as ‘Jarvo 69’ made a surprise return as he halted India’s ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener against Australia at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

The much-anticipated ICC World Cup 2023 fixture between two dominant forces of world cricket, India and Australia, got off to an eventful start when the renowned English prankster Jarvo invaded the playing area, moments before the commencement of the action.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first and Jarvo somehow managed to trespass the fence around the stands and enter the field when the Indian team and the umpires were on the field.

He also got close to India’s star batter Virat Kohli, who, alongside match officials, escorted him off the field.

It was not the first time, ‘Jarvo 69’ had interrupted a game.

The English citizen had breached security and entered the pitch donning the Indian jersey, pretending to be an Indian player during the second Test match in Lord’s in August 2021.

Next month, Jarvo was arrested for his suspicious assault of England batsman Jonny Bairstow on day two of the fourth England-India Test match at The Oval in London.

During the play, Jarvo came running past fast-bowler Umesh Yadav and threw the ball at Ollie Pope at the striker’s end. He lost control of himself and went crashing into Bairstow at the non-striker’s end.

For the unversed, the prankster is banned for life from watching a cricket match in Headingley, where he entered the ground as a batsman during the third Test between India and England.

Yorkshire Cricket Club’s spokesperson had confirmed that a lifetime ban and financial penalty were imposed on the serial pitch invader for violating security measures.

Australia end losing streak with consolation win over India

Glenn Maxwell returned career-best figures of 4-40 to end Australia’s five-match losing streak with a consolation 66-run win over India in the third one-day international on Wednesday.

Mitchell Marsh led the batting onslaught with his 96 as Australia posted 352-7, a total their bowlers defended by bowling out India for 286 in Rajkot.

The hosts took the three-match series 2-1 but Australia finish on a high ahead of the ODI World Cup starting October 5 in India.

Maxwell, who returned to the team alongside Mitchell Starc after the two players recovered from their injuries, scored just five with the bat but made an impact with his impressive off-spin.

Glenn Maxwell got the first three wickets including skipper Rohit Sharma, for 81, and star batsman Virat Kohli, for 56, after a brisk start by India.

Rohit raised his fifty in 31 balls and seemed to have the chase in control but Maxwell got the captain with a stunning caught and bowled in his second over.

He then sent back Kohli soon after the former captain’s 66th ODI fifty and, despite a fighting 48 by Shreyas Iyer, the Indian batting folded in 49.4 overs.

Pace bowler Josh Hazlewood took two wickets as Australia ended the losing streak which started in South Africa earlier this month.

Batsmen set up victory after Marsh tore into the Indian bowlers in attacking partnerships that included a second-wicket stand of 137 with Steve Smith, who hit 74.

The top four batsmen stood out with Marsh, David Warner (56), Smith and Marnus Labuschagne (72) all contributing to a mammoth total that looked like going beyond 400 before India hit back.

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets while left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took two.

Marsh took on Bumrah with three boundaries and a six in the paceman’s first two overs and the left-handed Warner soon joined in the charge.

Warner hammered Prasidh Krishna for three fours and a six in the seventh over and raced to his fifty in 32 balls in the next with another hit over the fence.

Marsh reached his half-ton in 45 balls but was denied a century when he casually slapped Kuldeep straight to cover. His 84-ball knock included 13 fours and three sixes.

Smith, Alex Carey and Maxwell fell at regular intervals, slowing the tourists down before Labuschagne took control until he was undone by Bumrah’s slower ball in the penultimate over.

The two teams now head into the World Cup warm-ups before they meet in the 50-over showpiece tournament on October 8 in Chennai.
