Imad Wasim comments on his international cricket comeback

Islamabad United’s all-rounder Imad Wasim has commented on the possibility of him coming out of retirement in international cricket.

Wasim, who stunned the cricket fans in November last year with a shocking retirement from international cricket, has kept the door open for his comeback to international cricket.

“I made a name for myself while playing for Pakistan and if my country needs me, I will be available. If not, I have no issues with that,” Wasim told local media.

“Shaheen [Afridi] called me after I retired but I told him that we will talk after PSL,” he added.

Wasim, who made his international debut in 2015, represented Pakistan in 66 T20Is and 55 ODIs before his retirement.

He scored 1,472 runs across formats with the help of six half-centuries and was also part of the Pakistan side that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.

Imad Wasim led Islamabad United to a thumping 39-run victory over Quetta Gladiators in Eliminator 1 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9 yesterday.

The victory marked the end of Quetta Gladiators’ PSL 9 campaign while Islamabad United progressed to Eliminator 2 where they will lock horns with Peshawar Zalmi.

The left-arm spinner claimed brilliant bowling figures of 3-19 to bowl the Gladiators for 139 while chasing 175.

“I think what we saw in the last few games, it was spinning, holding a bit, the thing I did well was to bowl really slow, it was gripping and it went well,” Imad said at the post-match ceremony.

“I tried to bowl more slow balls than arm balls and mixed it up…worked for me…we restricted them and took wickets which is the best thing, if you do one of these right, you will win because powerplay is very important,” he added.

Naseem Shah charged for code of conduct violation during United-Sultans clash

RAWALPINDI: Islamabad United’s Naseem Shah has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9 clash against Multan Sultans.

The star pacer was fined for a level 1 breach of the PSL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during Islamabad United’s final group match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on Sunday.

Naseem had kicked the stumps after the final ball of Multan Sultans’ innings, resulting in him getting charged for violating Article 2.2 which deals with abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings.

Since Naseem pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Roshan Mahanama, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was imposed by on-field umpires Ruchira Palliyaguruge and Muhammad Asif.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in the same match, Multan Sultans were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate.

Multan Sultans were ruled to be one over short of their target by match referee Roshan Mahanama, who took into consideration time allowances before arriving at the decision.

As such, and in accordance with Article 2.22 of the HBL PSL Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, each player was fined 10 per cent of his match fee.

Multan Sultans suffered a three-wicket defeat against Islamabad United, courtesy of Imad Wasim, who smashed a four and six in the last two balls to chase the highest total in PSL 9.

Usman Khan’s ton in vain as United edge Sultans to qualify for PSL 9 playoffs

RAWALPINDI: Imad Wasim held on to his nerves after Colin Munro and Shadab Khan’s half-centuries to guide Islamabad United to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Multan Sultans in the 27th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here on Sunday.

Islamabad United recorded the third-highest successful chase in PSL history as they chased a mammoth 229-run target on the last ball of the innings.

The home team had a horrible start to the chase as they lost two wickets with only four runs on the board inside two overs.

Colin Munro and captain Shadab Khan then turned the tide in United’s favour with their belligerent hitting.

They raised 141 runs for the third wicket in 64 balls, completing their respective half-centuries before Abbas Afridi broke the partnership with the wicket of Khan.

Khan went back to the pavilion after scoring 54 off 31 with the help of six boundaries and two sixes.

Munro also departed in the next over leaving Islamabad United reeling at 157-5 in 14 overs. He smashed 14 boundaries, including five sixes during his 84-run knock.

Haider Ali played a 19-run cameo before Mohammad Ali crashed his middle stump, bringing Imad Wasim to the crease.

With 48 needed off 23 balls, Wasim and Faheem Ashraf knitted a 40-run stand in 20 balls but Ashraf fell to Afridi in the last over.

Wasim finished the job with a four and six in the last two balls to chase the highest total in the ongoing PSL 9.

Ashraf scored 23 off 14, while Wasim played an unbeaten cameo of 30 runs from 13 balls with the help of four boundaries and one six.

Afridi claimed bowling figures of 3-40 and Ali bagged two wickets for Multan Sultans.

Earlier, Usman Khan’s scintillating 50-ball century helped Multan Sultans post a mammoth 228/4 in their allocated 20 overs.

Islamabad United invited Multan Sultans to bowl first, but they had to wait for 4.3 overs to get the first wicket.

Yasir Khan dominated the 44-run opening partnership with 33 off 16 which included four boundaries and two sixes, while captain Mohammad Rizwan played cautiously.

Hunain Shah broke the partnership as he rattled Yasir Khan’s off-stump.

Rizwan scored 20 runs from 17 balls with the help of two boundaries and one six before Faheem Ashraf ended his brief stay on the crease.

Usman Khan and Johnson Charles joined hands for a quick partnership of 86 runs in 44 balls for the third wicket.

Charles smashed three sixes and as many fours on his way to an 18-ball 42 but missed an uppercut to Ashraf as the ball edged to the safe hands of wicketkeeper Azam Khan.

Usman Khan continued his onslaught as he knitted a one-sided partnership of 54 runs with Iftikhar Ahmed (13).

After Iftikhar Ahmed’s departure, Khan was joined by Chris Jordan (15) and together they scored 30 runs in the last 14 balls to see their team finish at the record total in their allocated 20 overs.

Khan hit a total of 18 boundaries during his unbeaten knock of 100 runs, which also included three sixes.

For Islamabad United, Ashraf led the bowling with figures of 2-32 in his three overs, while Hunain Shah and Naseem Shah bagged one wicket each.

Zaman gives Lahore Qalandars first win in PSL 9 as Islamabad United falter

RAWALPINDI: Zaman Khan’s four-wicket haul after Rassie van der Dussen’s gutsy half-century led Lahore Qalandars to their first win in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Set to chase 163, the United’s batting unit unfolded on 145 in 18.5 overs despite Faheem Ashraf’s unbeaten 41.

The home side had a disastrous start to the run chase as they lost six wickets inside seven overs with just 38 runs on the board.

Following the slump, Azam Khan partnered briefly with Faheem Ashraf for an anchoring 35-run partnership which lasted with the former’s departure in the 11th over.

The right-handed batter smashed three boundaries and two sixes on his way to a 19-ball 29.

Faheem then put together an important partnership with Naseem Shah when the duo added 42 runs for the eighth wicket.

Naseem scored a brisk 27 off 16 deliveries before falling victim to Shaheen Shah Afridi in the 16th over.

But Faheem kept the scoreboard ticking and brought United in touching distance to a thrilling victory when they needed 18 off eight deliveries.

However, Zaman Khan trapped Rumman Raees lbw with a ferocious yorker and United, as a result, bundled out on 145 in response to Qalandars’ 162.

Faheem remained stranded at the non-striker’s end 41 not out off 31 deliveries which featured four boundaries and a six.

Zaman led the bowling attack for the Qalandars with 4/37, followed by Afridi, who bagged two wickets.

Put into bat first, the defending champions, who are yet to win a match in the ongoing tournament could manage a subpar total despite Rassie van der Dussen’s half-century.

The visitors had a disappointing start to their innings as they lost their openers Sahibzada Farhan (2) and Fakhar Zaman (10) inside the batting powerplay with just 16 runs on the board.

The Qalandars then sustained another blow to their batting charge when Shai Hope (6) perished in the sixth over, bringing them down to 30/3 in the seventh over.

Following the slump, Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Shah Afridi promoted himself in the batting order, coming out to bat at No.5.

He offered a brief counterattack with his quickfire cameo and put together a brisk 46-run partnership with van der Dussen before falling victim to his Islamabad United counterpart Shadab Khan in the 11th over.

Afridi smashed four sixes on his way to a 14-ball 30.

But Rassie van der Dussen stood his ground firm and put together brief partnerships with Sikandar Raza (4) and Ahsan Hafeez Bhatti (13) before finally perishing in the 18th over.

He remained the top-scorer for the Qalandars with 64 off 44 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and as many sixes.

Later, David Wiese bolstered Lahore Qalandars’ total with an unbeaten 24-run cameo. His 11-ball knock featured three boundaries.

Rumman Raees led the bowling attack for Islamabad United in their all-important PSL 9 fixture with 2/19, while Naseem Shah, Hunain Shah, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf and Shadab made one scalp each.

Misbah-ul-Haq blames Peshawar Zalmi’s team selection for Islamabad United loss

Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq has blamed the team selection by Peshawar Zalmi as well as tactical decision-making for the loss against Islamabad United during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Peshawar Zalmi succumbed to a 29-run loss against Islamabad United after they managed only 167 while chasing 197.

Misbah-ul-Haq, during the A-Sports show ‘The Pavilion,’ opened up about the reasons for Peshawar Zalmi’s dismal performance.

“Peshawar Zalmi should blame themselves. They made errors, starting from the team selection,” said the former captain.

“They strengthened their bowling but chose to bowl first after winning the toss. If a team has added two bowlers then they should have batted first,” he further added.

Misbah-ul-Haq also questioned the decision to drop top-order batter Haseebullah Khan and lower-order finisher Asif Ali.

“Dropping Haseebullah was surprising. And they should have played Asif Ali at number six as a proper finisher instead of Paul Walter,” Misbah stated.

For the unversed, Peshawar Zalmi had a horrible start to their chase as they lost both openers in the first over with only one run on the board.

Skipper Babar Azam got run out at the non-striker end, while Saim Ayub was caught in the slip by Salman Ali Agha.

Their batters failed to handle the pressure and soon found themselves slipped to 18-5 inside the power play.

With 179 required off 86 balls and five wickets, Peshawar Zalmi appeared to get bundled out for a paltry total.

However, Aamir Jamal fought back with a one-sided 107-run partnership with Paul Walter, who scored only 29.

Jamal launched a controlled onslaught on Islamabad United bowlers, hitting shots across all sides of the park during his 87-run knock from 49 balls.

He smashed a total of 14 boundaries including six sixes.

However, Shadab Khan broke the partnership by removing Walter and castled Jamal in the next over to seal the deal for his side.

With 45 needed off two overs, Zalmi managed only 15 runs and suffered their third loss in the PSL 9.
