PSL 10: Vince, bowlers shine as Karachi Kings crush Quetta Gladiators

KARACHI: James Vince’s determined half-century and a dominant display from bowlers propelled Karachi Kings to a 56-run win against Quetta Gladiators in the eighth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at National Bank Stadium on Friday.

Chasing a challenging target of 176, Quetta Gladiators were restricted to 119 for the 9 in their 20 overs.
The Gladiators never looked comfortable during the chase, losing wickets at regular intervals. Karachi Kings’ bowlers wreaked havoc early on, picking up wickets in the powerplay.

Quetta Gladiators lost their opener, Finn Allen (6), in the very first over. After an early wicket, hopes were pinned on emerging batter Hasan Nawaz to steady the innings. However, he was dismissed off Hasan Ali’s bowling, thanks to a spectacular catch by Khushdil Shah.

The 2017 champions were eventually 37-5 in 5.5 overs, as their batting line was a house of cards. Kusal Mendis (12) and Khawaja Nafay (1) went in quick succession.

Furthermore, the experienced Rilee Rossouw could not rise to the occasion as he was dismissed for a mere one run. Saud Shakeel remained firm on one end; however, it was insufficient to bring his team closer to the target.

The embattled side skipper Saud remained unbeaten on 33 off 40 balls, striking three fours.

For Karachi Kings, Hasan Ali emerged as the standout bowler, claiming three wickets for 27 runs in his four overs. Mohammad Nabi also contributed significantly, taking two wickets while conceding just seven runs in his four overs.

James Vince was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for the second time in the PSL 10, for his brilliant batting display.

Earlier, after opting to bat, Karachi Kings posted 175 for the loss of seven wickets in their allocated 20 overs.

The home side capitalized on the decision earlier in the innings, posting 60 runs in 5.4 overs. Skipper David Warner and Tim Seifert led the charge with aggressive batting. The blazing stand ended with the dismissal of Warner.

David Warner struck five fours on his way to a well-made 31 off 20 deliveries. After failing to contain the Kings’ batters in the early overs, the Gladiators struck once the spinners were introduced.

Seifert was also dismissed in the sixth over, thanks to a peach of a delivery from Saud Shakeel. Karachi Kings failed to capitalize on a good start and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Young batter Muhammad Riazullah (6), Khushdil Shah (1) went in quick succession, courtesy of brilliant bowling from mystery spinner Ali Majid.

However, James Vince remained firm on one end and went on to score his second-half century of the season. He forged a 34-run partnership with Irfan Khan. Irfan was dismissed on 17 off 12 balls, hitting one six.

In the last phase of the innings, Mohammad Nabi combined with Vince and added a 49-run partnership in quick time. Nabi’s cameo laced with two sixes ended on 18.

James Vince remained till the end and was dismissed on the penultimate ball of the innings, ensuring that the Kings reached a challenging total.

He top-scored with 70 off 47 deliveries, laced with six fours and one six.

For Quetta Gladiators, Ali Majid was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets for 29 in his four overs. Mohammad Amir, Abrar Ahmed, and Saud Shakeel bagged one wicket each.

From the serene valleys of Swat to the electric stadiums of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), fast bowler Fawad Ali is living his dream, thanks to the Karachi Kings’ Talent Hunt Program that first spotted his raw talent in 2023.

Fawad, who made his PSL debut on April 12 against Multan Sultans, expressed overwhelming joy that came with stepping onto the big stage.

“My debut was against Multan Sultans, and I was absolutely overjoyed. Sharing the field with senior players like our captain, David Warner, felt surreal,” he said.

“Hasoo [Hasan Ali] was at mid-on while I was bowling. He kept guiding me throughout my spell, telling me what to do and how to execute it. I followed exactly what he advised, and that really helped.”

Despite the intensity of playing in front of a massive crowd for the first time, Fawad shared that he remained composed, thanks to the support of his seniors.

“I used to play a lot of tape-ball cricket, so the crowd or big stage didn’t put much pressure on me. Plus, with senior players around me in the field giving advice and support, it all felt manageable,” he stated.

Raised in a region with limited cricket infrastructure, Fawad vividly remembers the impact of Karachi Kings bringing trials to his hometown.

“It felt amazing that Karachi Kings organised trials in our area. We don’t have structured cricket like that in Swat. When they came, it felt like something truly different was happening. I gave the trials and Alhamdulillah, I topped them,” he added.

After being part of the squad in PSL 9 as a replacement for Tim Seifert, Fawad was officially drafted into the Emerging Category for PSL 10 following his growth at the Karachi Kings Academy, where he trained under the franchise’s professional coaching setup.

“My goal this season is to deliver my best performance in the PSL and, Insha’Allah, represent Pakistan in the future,” he concluded.

Karachi Kings make two changes to squad for PSL 10

Shaun Tait banking on experience in Karachi Kings’ pace attack

Karachi Kings’ fast bowling coach, Shaun Tait, has expressed confidence in the team’s depth and experience as they prepare for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10.

Tait, who has previously coached Pakistan and Afghanistan and was recently part of Quetta Gladiators’ coaching staff in PSL 9, believes the composition of the Karachi Kings squad will make strategic execution more seamless.

“It’s a strong side with serious experience—not just among the international players but also with the local stars,” he stated.

“You’ve got Pakistan’s Test captain [Shan Masood], and of course, David Warner leading the side. When you have players who’ve seen it all, the strategy side becomes easier. The key is to slot them into the right roles and let them do their job.”

Speaking about his approach as a fast bowling coach, Shaun Tait emphasized tailoring tactics based on individual skill sets.

“It depends on the bowler. If someone is an out-and-out pacer, you have to let them unleash and go for wickets. Others might focus more on line and length, slower deliveries, and variations,” he added.

“If you’re lucky enough to have a genuine strike bowler, you just let him bowl as fast as he can.”

Tait, known during his playing days for his raw pace and aggression, has represented Australia in all three formats, claiming 95 international wickets and 598 across his professional career.

Now, on the coaching front, he’s pleased with the blend of senior pros and emerging talent in the Kings’ setup.

“We’ve had a couple of good training sessions. Many of the players have already represented Pakistan and played in PSL for years,” he further stated.

“There’s not much heavy coaching required with such experienced guys. For the younger ones who might not start in the first couple of games, this is a golden chance to learn from seasoned teammates.”
