“Decision regarding Pakistan’s white-ball captaincy to be made after Rizwan-Naqvi meeting”

Former wicketkeeper batter Rashid Latif claimed that the decision regarding appointing Pakistan’s white-ball captain will be made after a meeting between Mohammad Rizwan and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Pakistan are set to embark on a white-ball tour to Australia for a three-match each ODI and T20I series, scheduled to run from November 4 until November 18.

The tour itself is a tough challenge for the Green Shirts, considering their previous record in Australia but the touring side faces another stiff challenge, a leadership void, which was created by Babar Azam after he officially stepped down as the team’s white-ball captain earlier this month.

Babar’s resignation came in the wake of the national team’s disastrous campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 where they suffered their first-ever group-stage exit, mainly pertaining to their shock loss against the United States of America (USA) and gut-wrenching defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India.

Right when Babar’s second reign as Pakistan captain ended, the cricketing body began searching for a new leader and wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan emerged as the front-runner.

Several reports within the national media indicated Rizwan as the next white-ball captain of the national team but the PCB is yet to make an official announcement.

Meanwhile, Rashid Latif came up with an assertion that the announcement regarding the appointment of the new white-ball captain is facing a delay due to a meeting scheduled between PCB chair Mohsin Naqvi and potential candidate Mohammad Rizwan.

“The decision regarding the captaincy for ODIs and T20s will be made after a meeting between the PCB chairman and Mohammad Rizwan. The meeting was expected to take place, but the PCB chief was not in the country,” Latif posted on his social media handles.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan’s squad for the white-ball tour to Australia will be announced in the coming days and the national team is scheduled to depart on October 29.

PCB Chairman congratulates Pakistan Men’s team on Test victory against England

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi has extended his heartiest congratulations to the Pakistan men’s cricket team for victory in the second Test against England in Multan on Friday.

The Shan Masood-led team defeated England by 152 runs to level the three-match series and claim their first Test victory at home since February 2021.

Following the victory, Mohsin Naqvi congratulated the whole team on their dominant performance and attributed the victory to combined efforts.

“The success in a home Test match after a long time has been attributed to teamwork,” said Naqvi. “The team exhibited hard work, passion and a professional approach to achieve this victory.”

Naqvi also lauded spin bowlers Sajid Khan and Noman Ali as well as debutant Kamran Ghulam for their impressive performances.

“Sajid Khan and Noman Ali played an important role in the victory with their brilliant bowling,” he added. “Kamran Ghulam already showed his full potential by scoring a century in his debut match.”

It’s worth noting that Noman and Sajid took eleven and nine wickets respectively, becoming only the second Pakistani pair to share 20 wickets in a Test match.

Meanwhile, Kamran Ghulam, who replaced Babar Azam in the team, played a gutsy knock of 118 runs in Pakistan’s first innings.

Mohsin Naqvi also expressed hope that the team will continue their good performance and win the series against England.

“The new players in the team justified their selection. I hope that the team will perform well in the last test match against England and win the series,” he concluded.

It’s worth noting that the final Test between Pakistan and England will be played from 24-28 October in Rawalpindi.

PCB Chairman opens up about Babar Azam’s replacement as captain

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has recently opened up about the replacement of Babar Azam as the national white-ball captain.

Babar stepped down from the position last week, announcing his decision through social media. He attributed the decision to a heavy workload and his intention to focus more on batting.

“Dear Fans, I’m sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month,” stated Babar Azam in a statement on his social media platforms.

“It’s been an honour to lead this team, but it’s time for me to step down and focus on my playing role,” he added.

During a recent media interaction, the PCB chairman was asked about the potential candidate to replace Babar as captain.

He revealed that he has assigned the selection committee to assign a new captain after ‘careful consideration’.

“I have told them to take a decision after careful consideration because the captain’s position is important,” Mohsin Naqvi said.

Remember, this was Babar Azam’s second reign as Pakistan captain. His first tenure ended in November 2023 following Pakistan’s dismal run at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.

The star batter relinquished all-format captaincy but was reinstated as white-ball captain in March this year. He led Pakistan in three bilateral T20I series against New Zealand, Ireland and England respectively before captaining the former champions in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan had a lacklustre outing in the mega event as the 2009 champions, in a first, crashed out of the tournament from the group stage, mainly due to their gut-wrenching defeats against the United States of America (USA) and arch-rivals India.

PCB Chairman ‘confident’ about India’s participation in Champions Trophy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reiterated his belief that India will visit Pakistan for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February to March, however, India’s participation in the tournament is uncertain as the BCCI seeks the government’s approval to visit the country.

However, Mohsin Naqvi, in an interaction with the media in Lahore, expressed confidence that all the teams, including India, will visit Pakistan for the eight-team tournament.

“I have full confidence in the Indian team… So far, there is nothing that would cause them to postpone or cancel. Therefore, all teams will come.”

“The Indian team should come. I don’t see them cancel or postpone coming here and we are confident we will host all the teams in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan,” he said.

He also shared his satisfaction with the ongoing upgradation of the stadiums, that will be hosting the Champions Trophy.

“The stadiums will also be ready to host the matches on schedule and any remaining work would be completed after the tournament. In a way, you can say that we are going to have a brand new stadium,” he added.

It’s worth noting that Rajeev Shukla, the vice-president of the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI), has recently shared that the cricket board is awaiting the government’s approval. As of now, no decision has been made regarding the tour of Pakistan.

“No decision has been taken (yet). However, our policy is that for international tours, we always seek permission from the government,” Shukla clarified.

“It’s up to the government to decide whether our team should go to any country or our team should not go to any country,” the BCCI VP added. “In this case (also), whatever the government will decide, we will abide by that.”

It is worth noting that India has not travelled to Pakistan since the Asia Cup in 2008 due to the long-standing political tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

In contrast, Pakistan has made four trips to India in the last 16 years. Their most recent visit was last year for the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023.

The BoG suggested that after witnessing the overwhelming response of the Faisalabad crowd, the PCB should take complete control of Iqbal Stadium and upgrade it to international standards, enabling the venue to be revived and host bilateral international series once again.

Members expressed their complete support and satisfaction with the projects, stating this was the need of the hour and that once the projects are completed, they will contribute to enhancing the image and profile of Pakistan and Pakistan cricket.

PCB chief Naqvi addresses venue concerns regarding England Test series

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi addressed the concerns regarding the availability of the venues for the upcoming three-match Test series between Pakistan and England.

Reports emerged earlier this week that the second Test of the three-match series between Pakistan and England, originally scheduled to take place at the National Stadium, Karachi may likely be shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the ongoing renovation at the country’s major stadiums.

England head coach Brendon McCullum also commented on the issue on Thursday while speaking to reporters at The Oval ahead of the third Test against Sri Lanka, stating that the management can not pick a team until they are aware of the playing conditions.

“We don’t really know (what is happening in Pakistan) but we can’t pick a team until we know where we’re going to play,” he said.

“It would be nice if, over the next couple of days, we found out.”
