Harbhajan Singh fumes over Rizwan-Dhoni comparison

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh slammed a Pakistani sports commentator for drawing a comparison between Mohammad Rizwan with former India captain MS Dhoni.

In a post on X, Farid Khan, asked his followers to draw a comparison of Rizwan with Dhoni to decide who is better.

Sharing a collage of the two cricketers, he wrote, “MS Dhoni or Mohammad Rizwan” Who is better? Tell me honestly.”

However, Harbhajan Singh who played under the captaincy of Dhoni, was irked by the post and blasted Farid Khan for attempting to compare the two cricketers.

“What r u smoking nowadays ???? What a silly question to ask . Bhaiyo isko batao . DHONI bhut aage hai RIZWAN se (Tell him that Dhoni is far ahead of Rizwan) Even if u will ask Rizwan he will give u an honest answer for this,” Singh wrote in a reply to the X post.

While the former Indian spin bowler appreciated the talent of Mohammad Rizwan, saying that the Pakistani wicketkeeping batter always plays with intent, Singh was against a comparison between the two players.

“DHONI no 1 even today in world cricket. None better thn him behind stumps,” wrote Harbhajan Sing in reply.

It is pertinent to mention that Dhoni led India to victory in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup 2007 in South Africa. He also led the team that won the ODI World Cup trophy in 2011 in India.

In 2013, he became the first-ever captain to have won all ICC trophies after guiding India to a Champions Trophy 2013 victory in England.

Pakistan’s wicketkeeping batter Mohammad Rizwan has over 5,000 runs in international cricket, averaging above 40 across all formats.

Martin Guptill claims to get “hate” from Indian fans

Martin Guptill revealed that he was getting hate comments on the fifth anniversary of the 2019 World Cup semi-final in which he runout India’s MS Dhoni.

Taking to Instagram, the former New Zealand batter cheekily posted photos of the famous runout of the former Indian skipper that sealed India’s fate in the semi-final.

He captioned his story, “Figured out why I’m getting so much hate today.”

He was referring to the famous runout of Dhoni that dashed the hopes of India to qualify for the final of the 2019 World Cup.

The match was originally scheduled for July 9, 2019, however, rain forced the organizers to reschedule it to the reserve day on July 10.

Chasing a target of 240 on the second day, India were in all sorts of trouble, having lost five wickets for 71 when MS Dhoni walked in.

The wicketkeeping batter built a valued 116-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja and was the last batter left on the crease after the Indian all-rounder fell with 31 required from 13.

With Dhoni as the last hope of India, he hit Lockie Ferguson for a six on the very first delivery of the 49th over, however, India’s hopes were dashed only after two balls.

Dhoni hit Ferguson towards the square leg and went for a double, however, Martin Guptill delivered a direct hit to see the back of the former Indian skipper.

Consequently, India lost the semi-final by 18 runs to New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup 2019 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Martin Guptill officially retired from international cricket in November 2023 after 367 international appearances for New Zealand with close to 13,500 runs across the formats.

MS Dhoni doing ‘well’ after knee surgery – team

NEW DELHI: MS Dhoni is doing well after knee surgery, IPL champions Chennai Super Kings said Friday, as the skipper weighs up whether to play on.

The 41-year-old former India captain played the just-concluded Indian Premier League season with his left knee heavily strapped.

“The surgery has been done in Mumbai and he is well,” Kasi Viswanathan, the Chennai Super Kings chief executive, told AFP. “The recovery process will take its time.”

Chennai edged out 2022 IPL champions Gujarat Titans by five wickets in a last-ball thriller in Ahmedabad that started on Monday and ended past 1:30am Tuesday.

Dhoni had played the entire IPL season with a heavily strapped left knee and although he seemed perfectly fine while keeping, he sometimes batted as late as No. 8 and didn’t appear quick when running between the wickets.

After fevered speculation that MS Dhoni might call it quits, he hinted he could do “one more season” as “a gift” to fans.

MS Dhoni is India’s most successful Test captain and has had a glittering career that included winning two World Cups.

He retired from international duty in 2020 but continued with the IPL, albeit with a bad knee and some lacklustre batting performances this term.

On Thursday, a source at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital told the Press Trust of India that Dhoni had successful surgery and would likely be released “in a day or two”.

“He would be resting for a few days before his extensive rehabilitation starts,” it said.

“It is now expected that he would have enough time to get fit to play in the next IPL,” the report added.

On Wednesday, CSK CEO had said that it was totally up to Dhoni to decide whether he should play the next season or not.

Tim Southee equals MS Dhoni’s batting record in Tests

WELLINGTON: Veteran New Zealand pacer and Test captain Tim Southee equalled his former Indian counterpart MS Dhoni’s tally of sixes in the longest format amid his side’s home fixture against England on Saturday.

New Zealand, who are in heaps of trouble dealing with ruthless England, found a moment to cherish amid their dismal home Test series as their captain Southee added another feather to his cap during the ongoing second Test.

The hosts’ batting lineup crumbled against a strong English bowling attack; featuring top-ranked Test bowler James Anderson but Southee retaliated for his side with an unbeaten 23 off just 18 deliveries.

The skipper hit two sixes amid his blitz against England before the rain forced an early end to day two here.

Amid his brief knock, Southee drew level with former Indian captain Dhoni’s tally of 78 sixes in the longest format of the game when he smashed Stuart Broad over the midwicket boundary for his second six of the match.

Southee achieved the milestone in just 131 innings, 13 less than Dhoni and has an opportunity to surpass the latter’s tally on the third day of the ongoing second Test.

The pacer, however, is a long way behind Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand record holder, whose mark of 107 sixes was recently shattered by England captain Ben Stokes.

‘Only Dhoni messaged me when I left Test captaincy’ reveals Kohli

DUBAI: Former Indian captain Virat Kohli revealed that only MS Dhoni texted him when he left the Test captaincy in January this year.

The right-handed batter, who top-scored for India with a brilliant 60 against Pakistan in a much-anticipated Asia Cup Super Fours clash on Sunday, talked to the presser where he revealed that only Dhoni texted him when he left the Test captaincy.

“When I left Test captaincy, I only received a message from one person and I have played with that person in the past. That person is MS Dhoni, anyone else did not message me. Many people have my number, and there are many people who give me suggestions on the TV,” Kohli stated.

“When you have genuine respect and connection with someone, you are able to see that because there is security from both sides,” he maintained.

The former captain also clarified and denied any insecurities with Dhoni before shading light on how one-on-one suggestions are better than those given in front of the entire world.

“I don’t want anything from him and he does not want anything from me. I was never insecure from him and he was never of me. I can just say that if I want to say something to someone, I will reach out individually,” Kohli said.

“Even if you want to help. If you want to give a suggestion to me in front of the TV or the whole world, it does not hold any value to me. You can talk 1-1, I see things with utmost honesty. It is not like I do not care, but you see the things how they are,” he added.

Kohli then went on to back India’s young pacer Arshdeep Singh, who dropped a sitter of Asif Ali in the 18th over which haunted the side in the next over as the right-handed batter went on to smash a boundary and a six to put Pakistan on the cusp of the resounding victory.

“Anyone can commit the mistake, the situation was tight. It was a high-pressure game and mistakes can happen,” said Kohli.

The right-handed batter also recalled his mistake against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2009 and revealed that he ‘stared at the ceiling till 5 am and thought his career was over’.

“I still remember I was playing my first Champions Trophy and the match was against Pakistan, I had played a very bad shot against Shahid Afridi. I was watching the ceiling till 5 am, I was not able to sleep and I thought my career is over but these things are natural,” Kohli shared.

“Seniors players get around you, there is a good team environment right now, I give the credit to the captain and coach. The players learn from their mistakes. So one must accept his mistake, address it and look forward to being in that pressure situation once again,” he maintained.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan avenged their Group A defeat by edge pasting arch-rivals India by five wickets in the Asia Cup Super Fours on Sunday.
