India end New Zealand’s jinx to top ICC World Cup 2023 standings

DHARAMSALA: Virat Kohli’s gutsy 95-run knock in the run chase powered India to edge New Zealand by four wickets and climbed to the summit of the ICC World Cup 2023 standings on Sunday.

Set to chase 274, India completed the pursuit for the loss of six wickets and 12 balls remaining to stay unbeaten in the mega event.

Notably, this was India’s first victory over New Zealand after 20 years in an ICC tournament.

Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave the hosts a flying start as they notched up a 71-run opening stand before Lockie Ferguson stepped up for New Zealand, removing both openers in his successive overs.

Sharma fell just shy of his half-century, scoring a 40-ball 46, hitting four boundaries and as many sixes while Gill scored a cautious 26. His 31-ball knock included five boundaries.

Following back-to-back blows, Shreyas Iyer joined Virat Kohli and they put together an anchoring 52-run partnership before the former perished in the 22nd over.

He scored 33 in 29 balls, smashing six boundaries.

Kohli was then involved in another crucial partnership for India with KL Rahul, who scored a 35-ball 27 before the home side lost two more wickets as the wicketkeeper batter and Suryakumar Yadav (2) fell in the span of 11 deliveries.

The back-to-back dismissals fueled New Zealand with momentum and their bowlers piled pressure on the Indian batters but set batter Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja did not deter.

The duo batted sensibly and put India in touching distance of a long-awaited victory over New Zealand with Virat sniffing his second century of the ICC World Cup 2023.

However, Matt Henry barred Kohli from equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI centuries (49), dismissing the star batter on 95.

Virat Kohli hit eight boundaries and two sixes on his way to a 104-ball 95.

Meanwhile, Jadeja carried his bat all the way through with an unbeaten 39 and steered India to glory.

His 44-ball knock featured three boundaries and a six.

Lockie Ferguson bagged two wickets for New Zealand, while Matt Henry, Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult made one scalp each.

India opted to field first after winning the toss and their bowlers justified the decision by dismissing both opening batters inside ten overs with a meagre 34 runs on board.

Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell then knitted a formidable third-wicket partnership to stabilize New Zealand innings.

Together they added 159 runs from 152 balls before Ravindra attempted to send Shami’s slower one to the stands but was caught by Shubman Gill on the boundary.

Ravindra’s 87-ball innings of 75 featured six boundaries and one six.

Mitchell then saw Kiwi skipper Tom Latham going back to the pavilion after getting lbw off Kuldeep Yadav.

Glenn Phillips (23) then supported Mitchell to add 38 runs for the fifth wicket before ballooning up Kuldeep Yadav’s ball only to be caught by Rohit Sharma.

Indian bowlers did not let New Zealand recover and gave only 30 runs for the last five wickets, as none of the lower-order batters could reach double figures.

Mitchell stood firm on the other end and hit Shami for ten runs in the final over before being caught by Virat Kohli in an attempt to hit the third boundary of the over.

He recorded his highest ODI score 130 off 127 balls with the help of nine boundaries and five sixes.

Shami topped the Indian bowling charts with his five-fer while Kuldeep Yadav picked two wickets for 73 runs.

Hardik Pandya ruled out of ICC World Cup 2023 clash with New Zealand

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of India’s ICC World Cup 2023 clash with New Zealand after suffering an injury in the win over Bangladesh, the BCCI said in a statement Friday.

Pandya twisted his ankle Thursday just three balls into his stint as the first change in the ninth over, after being hit for consecutive boundaries by Liton Das.

Following prolonged on-field treatment, he tried running in to bowl but could only hobble towards the crease and eventually limped off the field.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) boss Jay Shah said Pandya would not fly to Dharamsala for Sunday’s match with the Kiwis.

He would instead “join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England” for their next match on the following Sunday, Shah said in a statement.

Hardik Pandya’s departure saw Kohli bowl for the first time in six years when he took charge for the rest of the over.

India defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets with Virat Kohli making his 48th ODI century to close in on Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 hundreds in the format.

Chasing a modest 257, India comfortably raised 261 for the loss of three wickets and 51 balls to spare.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma once again scripted a flying start for his side in the run chase as he, alongside Shubman Gill, scored 88 runs for the first wicket stand.

Rohit, who majorly dominated the opening stand, fell just shy of his half-century as he perished after scoring a 40-ball 48 which featured seven boundaries and two sixes.

Virat Kohli then joined Shubman Gill at the crease and together another crucial partnership for India, adding 44 runs to the total before the latter perished soon after amassing his half-century.

He remained a notable contributor to India’s fourth victory in the ICC World Cup 2023 with a brilliant 53. His 55-ball knock included five boundaries and two boundaries.

Mitchell Santner faces ‘tough challenge’ to beat Daniel Vettori’s record

Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner took his 100th one-day international wicket in the ICC World Cup 2023 victory over Afghanistan but admitted it will be a “tough challenge” to even get within touching distance of New Zealand record holder Daniel Vettori.

Fellow spinner Vettori, who retired after the 2015 World Cup final, ended his career with 297 ODI wickets for New Zealand, as well as an additional eight more taken with a World XI team.

On Wednesday, Santner took 3-39 as Afghanistan were dismissed for just 139 to lose by 149 runs.

The 31-year-old now has 102 ODI wickets and his 11 at this World Cup put him on top of the bowling charts while also boasting a mean average of just over 15.

“It’s obviously nice to get to that milestone,” said Santner of reaching the 100-wicket mark, becoming only the second Kiwi spinner behind Vettori to achieve the distinction.

“But I am just trying to perform my role and do a job out there.”

He added: “I think I’m 200-odd wickets behind him (Vettori), so it’s going to be a tough challenge to get there. But yeah, I obviously watched a lot of him do his thing over a long period of time.”

Santner is enjoying the spin-friendly conditions of the sub-continent, which is a world away from the seamers’ paradise that is New Zealand.

“It’s obviously nice to come here and see the ball spin a little bit which you don’t really get in New Zealand,” said Santner.

New Zealand, runners-up at the last two World Cups, are well placed to reach the semi-finals after a fourth win in four games so far.

Afghanistan, who shocked defending champions England on Sunday, were the authors of their own downfall, dropping five catches.

In stark contrast, Santner took a superb catch to dismiss Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi.

“I didn’t think I was going to get there at the start,” said Santner of his catch off fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.

“But I guess lucky for me I’ve got very long arms and was able to kind of pluck it out.”

Santner praised Afghanistan’s bowling which reduced the Kiwis to 110-4 at one stage.

“I think you’ve got to give credit to Afghanistan,” he said. “They bowled extremely well at the top.”

Next for New Zealand will be a clash with India, the tournament’s only other undefeated side, in Dharamsala on Sunday.

“They look pretty tough to beat,” said Santner of India who face Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday, after having won their first three games.

“We’ll have to do our assessment in Dharamsala — see what the wicket’s going to do. And obviously there has been a little pace and bounce, but whether that is the case when we play them, we’ll see.

“So yeah, we’ve just got to keep focused on the things we want to and how we want to play. Obviously, it’s nice to be in this position to lead into this game.”

New Zealand crush Afghanistan to top ICC World Cup 2023 standings

CHENNAI: Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips’s half-centuries, paired up with a combined bowling effort, propelled New Zealand to a thumping 149-run victory over Afghanistan in the 16th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase 289, Afghanistan’s batting lineup failed completely and could only score 139 in response before being bundled out in the 35th over.

Afghanistan had a dismal start to their run chase as they lost both their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11) and Ibrahim Zadran (14) and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (8) with just 43 runs on the board.

Following the early debacle, Rahmat Shah and Azmatullah Omarzai attempted to anchor the run-chase with a gutsy fourth-wicket partnership and added 54 runs to the total.

The pair appeared to have settled down but Trent Boult struck again to remove Omarzai and opened the floodgates. He scored 27 in 32 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

Young spinner Rachin Ravindra then put New Zealand in complete command by removing Shah, who waged a lone battle for Afghanistan with a cautious 36. His 62-ball knock featured only one boundary.

Later, Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson ripped through their tail and steered their side to the fourth-consecutive victory in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan after winning the toss invited New Zealand to bat first and picked up an early wicket of in-form opening batter Devon Conway at a total of 30.

However, Will Young, who returned to the side after Kane Williamson suffered a thumb injury in the match against Bangladesh, remained firm and completed his half-century during his partnership with Rachin Ravindra.

The duo scored 79 runs for the second wicket before Azmatullah Omarzai sent both of them packing in the same over.

Ravindra scored 32, while Young scored 64-ball 54, featuring four boundaries and three sixes.

With New Zealand struggling at 110-4, skipper Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips played cautiously at the start to help the side recover before switching gears in the final overs.

They knitted a 144-run stand for the fifth wicket, completing their respective half-centuries in the process.

Naveen-ul-Haq broke the stand when Phillips was caught in the deep by Rashid Khan after scoring 71 off 80, with the help of four boundaries and as many sixes.

Latham followed him two balls later while attempting to scoop Naveen-ul-Haq but missed the line and the ball thudded the off stump.

Mark Chapman then played a brisk 12-ball cameo of 25 to lift New Zealand to 288 in their accumulated 50 overs.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai picked two wickets each for Afghanistan, while Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman managed one each.

Kane Williamson fractures thumb in new World Cup injury blow

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson faces another spell on the sidelines after scans revealed he fractured his thumb in the ICC World Cup 2023 win over Bangladesh, his first match in seven months following a serious knee injury.

Coach Gary Stead said, however, that Williamson will remain with the squad and could return to the field “at the back end of pool play next month”.

The 33-year-old injured his left thumb when struck by a throw while running between the wickets in Friday’s eight-wicket Bangladesh in Chennai, forcing him to retire hurt on 78.

Batsman Tom Blundell will travel to India as cover but won’t officially be part of the squad while Kane Williamson rehabilitates, New Zealand Cricket said.

The injury soured Williamson’s return to cricket after injuring his knee playing in the Indian Premier League in March.

He sat out the opening World Cup wins over England and the Netherlands before being deemed ready to play against Bangladesh.

“Firstly, we’re all feeling for Kane to have this occur after all his hard work to return from his knee injury,” Stead said.

“While it’s disappointing, the initial diagnosis has given us some optimism he can still feature later in the pool play following a period of rest and rehabilitation.

“Kane is clearly a massive part of our side and a world-class player and captain – so we’ll look to give him every opportunity we can to return in the tournament.”

If Kane Williamson is ruled out until November, he will miss ICC World Cup 2023 pool games against Afghanistan, India and Australia over the next two weeks.

New Zealand currently sit on top of the 10-nation table after three wins in three games.

The top four qualify for the semi-finals while the final takes place in Ahmedabad on November 19.

New Zealand ease past Bangladesh in ICC World Cup 2023

CHENNAI: Returning Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell scored anchoring half-centuries after a combined effort from the bowlers to steer New Zealand to a convincing eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023.

New Zealand completed the 246-run pursuit in 42.5 overs when Daryl Mitchell clubbed Shoriful Islam for a six over deep midwicket.

The 2019 finalists had a shaky start to the run chase as they struggled against Bangladesh pacers with in-form Rachin Ravindra (9) perishing in the third over with just 12 runs on the board.

Skipper Williamson joined Devon Conway at the crease following the debacle and anchored the run chase.

The pair batted sensibly to add 80 runs to the total before Shakib Al Hasan got rid of Conway in the 21st over.

He contributed significantly for New Zealand with a 59-ball 45, hitting three boundaries.

Williamson then joined forces with Mitchell and the duo put New Zealand in complete command.

They put together a 108-run stand for the third wicket, which ended when Williamson walked off the field after sustaining a blow to his left-hand thumb.

He scored 78 in 107 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and a six.

Mitchell spearheaded New Zealand’s pursuit after Williamson’s departure and powered his side to glory with 43 balls to spare.

He remained unbeaten with a quickfire 89. His 67-ball knock included six boundaries and four sixes.

For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib could pick up a wicket apiece.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who made his long-awaited return after a six-month hiatus due to an injury, invited Bangladesh to bat after winning the toss.

New Zealand bowlers justified their captain’s decision and reduced Bangladesh to 56-4 in the 13th over, after a 40-run partnership between Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanzid Hasan for the second wicket.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim then stitched a 96-run stand for the fifth wicket to drag the total to 152.

Lockie Ferguson broke the stand when Shakib Al Hasan attempted to hit back-to-back sixes but failed and was caught behind by Tom Latham.

He scored 40 off 51, with the help of three boundaries and two sixes.

Mushfiqur Rahim on the other end scored an anchoring 66, featuring six boundaries and two sixes before being castled by Matt Henry.

Mahmudullah and Taskin Ahmed then added a valuable 34 runs for the eighth wicket until the latter swept Santner straight to deep backward square.

Meanwhile, Mahmudullah stayed till the end to push the total to 245-9 in their accumulated 50 overs.

His 49-ball 41 featured two boundaries and as many sixes.

Lockie Ferguson topped the bowling charts for New Zealand with figures of 3-49, while Trent Boult and Matt Henry picked two wickets.

Kane Williamson, Tim Southee likely to be fit for Bangladesh match

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is likely to achieve full fitness, while pace bowler Tim Southee is available for selection for New Zealand’s third match in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, confirmed head coach Gary Stead.

New Zealand’s head coach during a press conference provided the latest update on Kane Williamson and Tim Southee ahead of the Bangladesh match on October 13 in Chennai.

“He [Kane Williamson] is been progressing very very well. He’s had a great last five or six days, really went about the fielding aspect of things,” Stead said. “That’s the key thing for Kane at the moment. It’s not about his injury so much now, it’s his ability to run between the wickets and to field and to consistently do that over a 50-over game. We’re delighted with where he’s at,”

Gary Stead shared that the final decision regarding Kane Williamson’s availability will be taken after more training sessions before the match.

“We’ve got two more trainings still to get through but at this stage all things are looing good for Kane to return in this game. But we still say that with an air of caution but we’re really pleased with the way he has been coming on,” he added.

Kane Williamson tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee playing for Indian Premier League side Gujarat Titans in April, which looked to have scuppered his chances of making the showpiece tournament.

However, he made it to New Zealand’s squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 and participated in New Zealand’s warm-up games against Pakistan and South Africa, scoring 54 and 37 respectively.

He missed New Zealand’s thumping nine-wicket win over defending champions England and an astounding 99-run victory over the Netherlands during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

In his absence, Rachin Ravindra was promoted to play at number 3 during the World Cup and he justified the decision by scoring a century and a fifty in two games.

Stead shed light on how New Zealand will fit Kane Williamson in the playing XI.

“If Kane is available, he will play. There is no doubt about that. He is one of the best players in the world. The discussions we are having at the moment is like how does that still fit?” said Stead.

Gary Stead also confirmed that Tim Southee has recovered after surgery on his fractured right thumb and is available for selection.

“Tim will be available for selection, he’s been tracking well. Looks like the thumb has set very very well,” Stead said. “He has been bowling at full intensity for the last couple of training sessions so he is certainly available for selection.”
