Rain halts fourth-Pakistan England T20I

LONDON: The persistent rain halted the fourth T20I between Pakistan and England here at Kennington Oval on Thursday.

Earlier, England captain Jos Buttler won the coin toss and put Pakistan into bat first.

With young left-handed opener Saim Ayub dropped, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan opened the innings for the touring side.

The decorated opening pair provided a solid start to Pakistan, adding 59 runs for the first wicket before Babar fell victim to Jofra Archer on the final delivery of the batting powerplay.

Babar smashed five fours and a six on his way to a 22-ball 36.

Rizwan was quick to follow as he was cleaned up by Adil Rashid in the next over. He scored 23 off 16 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Coming as Saim Ayub’s replacement, Usman Khan then put together a brief partnership with Fakhar Zaman, who fell in the ninth over after scoring a run-a-ball nine.

Pakistan then lost two more wickets in quick succession as Shadab Khan and Azam Khan both perished for ducks.

The touring side was 91/5 in 10.4 overs when the on-field umpires decided to stop the proceedings and the covers were brought on.

Notably, the first and third T20I of the ongoing four-match series between Pakistan and England were also washed due to rain.

England lead the four-match series 1-0 as Jos Buttler and bowlers led them to a convincing 23-run victory in the second T20I.

Moreover, it is uncertain whether Buttler will return in time for the final T20I against Pakistan but as things stand he is most likely to accompany the England squad on their departure for the West Indies for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday.

Earlier, England’s vice-captain Moeen Ali, who has led the side in 12 ODIs and T20Is, stated that nothing will change if he assumes the England captaincy role in Jos Buttler’s absence.

“I feel I’ve captained enough for England,” Moeen said.

“I’ll be fine. Nothing will change too much, it’s just taking over from what he’s doing and then when he comes back, he takes over.

“Hopefully, the baby comes at the right time where he doesn’t miss too many games.

“For me, it’s just whatever will happen, will happen. It’s not really difficult, to be honest with you, because we speak often, me and Jos. We talk about other things, the team and all that. We’re on the same page anyway.”

Rain likely to spoil another Pakistan-England T20I

CARDIFF: The third T20I of the four-match series between Pakistan and England, scheduled at Sophia Gardens here is likely to get interrupted by the rain, according to the United Kingdom (UK) Met Office weather forecast.

According to the forecast, Cardiff will receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday with the chances as high as 90 per cent.

UK Met Office reports a 50 per cent chance of rain early in the morning which is likely to go up by 90 per cent by noon.

The rain probability will then significantly drop down to 50 per cent during the match, which is scheduled to commence at 6:30 pm local time.

The humidity level is expected to go as high as 94 per cent while the temperature ranges from 13 to 14 degrees Celsius.

If the match gets underway, the higher humidity will make it tougher for the bowlers to grip the ball and will also pose a threat for the fielders.

Furthermore, such high moisture leads to a damp and unpredictable pitch which may cause additional difficulties for both batters and bowlers.

Haris Rauf hopeful for Pakistan’s comeback in England series

CARDIFF: Pakistan’s right-arm pacer Haris Rauf expressed his confidence in the national team to force a comeback in the ongoing four-match T20I series against England.

The express pacer addressed a press conference here on Monday and revealed that the touring side is confident and will try to win the remaining fixtures heading into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“Yeah, we lost one game but as a team, we are very confident and [will] try to win the next couple of games before the World Cup.

“As a team, we had a good practice session today and we played a lot of games in the past.

“Obviously, it is disheartening to lose a match but as a team we are confident and we can beat any opposition and we’ve done that a lot of times in the past.

“When you make mistakes, you learn from them and try not to repeat them. So, we’ll work on it and will try to perform well in the coming matches and make a comeback.”

Haris Rauf further revealed the obstacles he faced amid his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury, which he sustained in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9.

“The family support remains throughout your career. Making a comeback is not easy but if one has delivered performances in the past, it is not difficult for the team to select again,” Haris said.

“It’s hard for a player when he gets injured and comes back again for the game. It’s not easy because you are struggling a lot at that time. For an express bowler, you need pace so it’s not easy to maintain same pace and length after an injury. It’s hard for every player however belief in yourself makes the process easier,” he added.

Notably, England are currently leading the four-match T20I series 1-0 after defeating Pakistan in the second game in Birmingham. Meanwhile, the first match in Leeds was called off due to persistent rain.
