Batters power England to edge Pakistan in U19 Women’s T20 WC

POTCHEFSTROOM: England batters Seren Smale and Ryana MacDonald-Gay played vital knocks to power their side to 156/7 before bowlers powered the side to a massive 53-run victory in the ongoing ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

After opting to bat first, England managed to pile up a competitive 156/7 at the back of brilliant knocks by Smale and MacDonald-Gay.

England, after getting off to a shaky start, lost wickets at regular intervals but that did not halt their march towards a big total, thanks to valuable contributions from their batters.

Opening batter and skipper Grace Scrivens laid a solid foundation with her 21-ball 24 before Smale anchored the innings with her sensible knock.

Smale top-scored for her side with 37 off 34 deliveries and hit six boundaries.

Despite Smale top-scoring, MacDonald remained the pick of the batters for England as she struck a quickfire 35 off just 22 balls, hitting three boundaries and a six.

For Pakistan, Anosha Nasir, Zaib-un-Nisa and Areesha Noor picked up two wickets each while Rida Aslam made one scalp.

Set to chase 157, Pakistan could only accumulate 103/5 in their set of overs with only opening batter Shawaal Zulfiqar and skipper Syeda Aroob Shah pushing for the pursuit.

Shawaal made a gritty 25 amid Pakistan’s horrible start before falling in the ninth over.

The right-handed opener also put on a fighting 20-run partnership with Aroob, who remained unbeaten with 34 in 36 deliveries.

Besides them, none of their batters could turn things around for the green shirts and the side was restricted to 103/5 and thus handed a massive victory to England.

Smale also proved her mettle with the ball as she picked up 2/10 while Hannah Baker and Grace Scrivens struck out a batter each.

Meanwhile, in the Group C clash of the ongoing world cup, dominant West Indies thrashed Indonesia by a mammoth 77 runs to go on top in the group standings.

‘People want to see exciting stuff’ Stokes vows to keep Test cricket alive

KARACHI: England captain Ben Stokes has affirmed that his team will continue with their attacking style of playing Test cricket, saying if he can make people ‘stop saying that the Test is a dying format’, he will keep doing that.

After his side’s comprehensive win in the final Test that completed a 3-0 clean sweep for England against Pakistan, Stokes said it was always challenging to play in subcontinent conditions but what they had done was ‘pretty special’.

“I feel like as if everything we’ve tried has come off in the series,” he said in a post-match press conference on Tuesday.

He claimed that he had learned a lot from playing in such conditions, saying it was one of the best things for him on the tour.

Stokes, who has now led England to nine victories out of ten matches since he took over the reins of the Test side earlier this year, vowed to continue with their aggressive approach in red-ball format, often dubbed as ‘BazBall’.

” Sports is entertainment…People want to see the exciting stuff,” he said.

“What we can do is to concentrate on the way we want to play and if we can make it (Test cricket) grow and stop people saying it’s a dying format, we’ll keep doing that.”

“But I am not gonna say every nation around the world needs to change the way they play because I don’t think it’s not my place to say.”

Furthermore, England’s captain praised the 18-year-old Rehan Ahmed, who returned astounding figures of 5/48 in the second innings of his debut Test, for having a ‘cricket savvy brain’ and called him an ‘unfinished article’.

“We won’t be putting any more pressure on him and let him continue to get better and better,” he said about Rehan – the youngest player to make a Test debut for England.

“He is not a finished article but it’s a great sign for us going forward to have someone at such a young age, whom we can put a lot of time and effort into him” he maintained.

‘We’ve to build team’ Babar backs new players after England whitewash

KARACHI: After Pakistan’s dismal 0-3 series whitewash against England, skipper Babar Azam has taken complete responsibility for the disappointing results, saying as a captain he will be at the forefront to defend the team.

Speaking at a press conference after England sealed a comprehensive eight-wicket win in the final Test on Monday, Babar said his side lacked experience players, especially the injuries to their bowling mainstays remained a major blow for the team.

“We played some good cricket in patches, but overall we could not finish the games properly,” he said. “And we too are very disappointed over the results and the series loss”

Babar added that his team perceived batting as their strength since their key bowlers were unfit but losing back-to-back wickets on several instances proved costly for the team and caused the defeats.

“Pitches were equal for both teams. We’ve to give credit to the English team for the way they played and utilized the conditions” he added.

Pakistan captain expressed that the team is in the building phase and he could not change things drastically in a week or two.

“We’ve to build the team,” he said.”We have to back the new players and give them proper chances and some time,”

Talking about his captaincy, Babar dispelled the impression there was any additional burden on him due to the role, saying: “I enjoy the captaincy and try my best to do whatever I can for the team.”

Moreover, the Pakistan captain also put his weight behind team management and said they had vast experience and services for the team.

“Their job is to share their experience and plans with us, in the end as players it is our responsibility to execute those plans,” he added.

England beat Pakistan in final Test to complete 3-0 series whitewash

KARACHI: England sealed a comprehensive eight-wicket victory early on Day 4 in the final Test to whitewash Pakistan 3-0 in the home series, here at National Bank Cricket Arena on Tuesday.

Captain Ben Stokes and opener Ben Duckett led the way for England as they quickly chased down the remaining 55 runs in the opening session.

The commendable performance from Ben Stokes-led men throughout the series made England the only team to clean-sweep Pakistan at home.

After close defeats in the first two Tests, Pakistan looked completely submissive in the final encounter where they scored 520 runs in both innings combined while their bowlers managed only 12 wickets mostly by the spinners.

Set to chase 167 in the final innings England had already raised 112 on the previous day with a loss of two wickets and only played 11 more overs on a new day to finish the game.

Player of the Match, Harry Brook made an astounding hundred on the second day to help England gain a 50-run lead in the first innings before they bundled out Pakistan for 216 in the second innings thanks to debutant Rehan Ahmed’s brilliant five-wicket haul.

Brook had a phenomenal run with the bat throughout the tour as he accumulated 468 runs with help of three glittering centuries. His phenomenal hundred in each of the three games earned him the player of the series award too.

Rehan, the youngest player to make a debut for England, had an impressive start to his career as he wreaked havoc on Pakistan’s batting line in the second innings and returned astounding figures for 5/48.

Debutant Rehan shocks Pakistan to put England on top in Karachi Test

KARACHI: Debutant Rehan Ahmed starred with a brilliant five-wicket haul on his debut Test to help England bundled out Pakistan for 216 in the second innings on the third day of the final Test, here at National Bank Cricket Arena on Monday.

England are made to chase 167 runs with more than two days remaining to clean-sweep Pakistan in the three-match series.

Rehan, the youngest player to make a debut for England, made an impressive start to his career as he wreaked havoc on Pakistan’s batting line and returned astounding figures for 5/48.

The 18-year-old earned England vital breakthroughs in the afternoon session when skipper Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel were striving to control the damage for Pakistan with a fifty each.

Babar and Saud gathered 110 runs on the fourth wicket and had nearly sailed Pakistan out of hot waters – as they were once stuck at 54 for 3 – before Rehan made back-to-back strikes and neutralized the gains made by the two. The leg spinner bagged the big wicket of skipper Babar to break the partnership prior to sending Mohammad Rizwan and Saud back to the pavilion before Tea.

Pakistan, however, managed 50 more runs after the interval and lost four wickets as the tail-enders failed to post a serious challenge in face of Ben Stokes’s commendable bowling changes.

Babar top-scored for his side with a solid 54 from 104 balls when he was caught at short mid-wicket by Ollie Pope off Rehan. Wicket-keeper batter Rizwan, however, managed just 7 off 16 before edging a short of a length ball.

Saud, who made his fourth fifty in the six innings he played so far, also offered his wicket to the 18-year-old before Tea with an ill-judged shot that was taken at square leg by Leach.

Earlier, Pakistan had a decent start to their second turn as openers Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique overcame the first innings deficit of 50 runs before Leach turned the tables in favour of England.

In a first breakthrough, Leach bowled out Shan Masood in his bid to attempt a reverse sweep while batting at 24. He then went on to hunt retiring Azhar Ali on a duck in the same over.

Veteran Azhar received a guard of honour from his teammates, who stood in queue raising their bats when the 37-year-old walked back to the pavilion after playing the final innings of his career, which unfortunately lasted for just four balls.

In his next over, Leach got rid of first Test centurion Abdullah Shafique after he made 26.
