PAKW vs SAW: All-round Pakistan sink South Africa to complete series sweep

KARACHI: Nida Dar’s quickfire 36-run knock, followed by a tight bowling display powered Pakistan Women to beat South Africa in the third PAKW vs SAW T20I to clean sweep the three-match series.

Set to chase 151, South Africa could accumulate 144/5 in their quota of 20 overs despite Laura Wolvaardt’s half-century.

Wolvaardt remained the top-scorer for her side with a 54-ball 72, laced with nine boundaries, but fell to guide South Africa to glory as she fell victim to Sadia Iqbal when her side needed 18 off 10.

South Africa then needed 13 off the final over to avoid the whitewash.

Diana Baig bowled the final over for Pakistan and leaked only six runs to steer her side to glory.

Besides Wolvaardt, South African batters made modest contributions in the run chase.

For Pakistan Women, Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal bagged two wickets each.

Put into bat first, Pakistan accumulated 150 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs, courtesy of a combined effort from their batters.

Pakistan openers Shawaal Zulfiqar and in-form Sidra Ameen laid a solid foundation with an anchoring 41-run partnership.

The pair batted sensibly before young Shawaal faltered against Nonkululeko Mlaba in the seventh over as South Africa got their first breakthrough.

Shawaal scored 18 off 19 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Sidra Ameen was then joined by experienced Bismah Maroof at the crease and the pair knitted an important 49-run partnership for the second wicket.

Sidra, who scored a match-winning half-century in the second PAKW vs SAW T20I, failed to replicate the feat in the third T20I as she fell for a run-a-ball 39 which featured four boundaries.

Following Sidra’s dismissal, the experienced duo of Bismah and skipper Nida Dar bolstered the total with a sensational 49-run partnership.

Bismah played an anchoring 39-run knock in 34 deliveries while Nida Dar scored a quickfire 36 off just 20 balls, laced with five boundaries and a six.

Wicketkeeper batter Muneeaba Ali added valuable eight runs to Pakistan’s total before perishing on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

Tumi Sekhukhune led the bowling attack for South Africa Women with 2/24, followed by Nonkululeko Mlaba, Nadine de Klerk and Nondumiso Shanga, who made one scalp each.

PAKW vs SAW: Pakistan edge South Africa to seal T20I series

KARACHI: Sidra Ameen’s 61-run knock after a tight bowling display powered Pakistan Women to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the second PAKW vs SAW T20I on Sunday.

Set to chase 151 in the second PAK vs SAW T20I, Pakistan comfortably completed the pursuit for the loss of just three wickets and five balls to spare.

The hosts, however, got off to a contrasting start to the run chase as they lost their young opener Shawaal Zulfiqar (4) with just 23 runs on the board in four overs.

Another opener Sidra Ameen was then joined by experienced Bismah Maroof and the pair soon launched a brilliant recovery, adding 68 runs for the second wicket before both perished in successive overs as Pakistan slipped to 102/3 in the 15th over.

Bismah scored a cautious 26-ball 27, hitting a boundary while Sidra Ameen top-scored with her career-best 61 in 44 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six.

Aliya Riaz, who scored the winning runs with a mighty six on the first delivery of the final over, scored an unbeaten 31 off 18 deliveries.

Put into bat first in the second PAKW vs SAW T20I, the touring side once again raised 150/3 on the board with their openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits leading the charge.

The in-form openers frustrated Pakistan bowlers with a solid first-wicket partnership as they added 74 runs before Nashra Sandhu got a much-needed breakthrough in the form of the South African captain.

Wolvaardt was once again unlucky as she missed her well-deserved half-century by just nine runs.

She scored 46 off 34 deliveries with the help of six boundaries.

Following Wolvaardt’s dismissal, Brits was joined at the crease by Marizanne Kapp and the pair knitted a crucial 37-run stand until the latter perished in the 17th over.

She top-scored for South Africa in the second PAK vs SAW T20I as well with a 48-ball 46, laced up with two boundaries and a six.

With both set batters back into the hut, Kapp and Nadine de Klerk bolstered South Africa’s total at the backend.

The duo, however, could put together a mere 19-run stand as Kapp got run out in the 19th over. She scored 26 off 24 deliveries, hitting two boundaries.

Meanwhile, Klerk stood his ground firm and carried his bat all the way through for an unbeaten 21 off 11 which featured four boundaries.

For Pakistan Women, only Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal could pick up a wicket apiece.

Put into bat first, South Africa piled up a commendable total of 150/3 on the board, courtesy of a solid foundation laid by the openers.

South Africa’s opening pair of Brits and Wolvaardt scripted a solid start to the innings as the pair notched up an 85-run partnership.

The pair batted sensibly and frustrated the hosts before Nashra Sandhu finally castled Wolvaardt to draw a much-needed breakthrough for Pakistan.

Trophy for Pakistan-South Africa Women’s T20I series unveiled

KARACHI: The trophy for the Women’s T20 International series between Pakistan and South Africa was unveiled here on Thursday.

The glittering trophy was revealed by Pakistan’s skipper Nida Dar and her South African counterpart Laura Wolvaardt before both captains posed with the trophy at Karachi’s shore.

The three-match WT20I series, scheduled on September 1, 3 and 4 will mark South Africa’s first-ever international fixture on Pakistan soil, followed by three ODIs, which are part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 from 8 to 14 September.

Notably, the historic WT20I series will also mark one of the busiest international seasons for the Pakistan women’s team amid which they are all set to play 15 ODIs (part of ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25), 17 T20Is, and participate in the 19th Asian Games from 1 September 2023 to 29 May 2024.

Nida Dar will be aiming for a winning start as the captain of the Pakistan women’s team when her side takes on the touring South Africa women’s team.

All-rounder Nida was appointed full-time captain of the side in April this year after Bismah Maroof stepped down from the captaincy following Pakistan’s participation in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in February.

On the other hand, South Africa, who are embarking on their maiden tour to Pakistan will be led by Laura Wolvaardt. She was given the reins of the touring side recently after Suné Luus led the South Africa women’s team to the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

In the T20I format, the hosts are ranked seventh in the ICC Rankings, while South Africa are ranked fifth.

On a head-to-head basis, Pakistan and South Africa have played a total of 18 T20Is, three of which include matches in ICC events.

Out of the 15 T20Is part of the bilateral series, South Africa have won eight, while the hosts have won seven. The last time both sides featured in a T20I match was in Durban in 2021, where Pakistan defeated South Africa by eight runs on DLS.

Pakistan women’s team captain Nida Dar termed it an honour for her to lead the national team and is upbeat for the upcoming challenge.

“I am feeling really honoured to lead the Pakistan team as a full-time captain, and that too at home. The South Africa women’s side is here for the first time, so it’s going to be a great experience, and we are looking forward to the series.

“There is definitely a lot of cricket happening in Pakistan, with the Men’s Asia Cup also taking place. There’s a lot of cricket for the fans to witness and enjoy.

“The National Bank Stadium is a historic venue, and I have always dreamed of playing here against a very competitive side. I am very hopeful that the team will produce positive results here.

“We are fully focused on the game. We haven’t played international cricket in the recent past, but we kept ourselves fit through different skills camps and practice games. The team combination is really strong, and as a leader I am looking forward to achieving positive results for the team in the series.

“We have a very busy season coming up, so we have prepared ourselves well. The Asian Games are scheduled after the South Africa series, so this series will help us prepare well in the Asian Games. I expect us to perform well in the series, and we are geared up for the busy year ahead.

“Cricket is one sport, whether it’s men’s or women’s cricket, that is loved by fans across the country. I urge the fans to come to the stadium and support this game.”

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt, on the other hand, shared her excitement to return to Pakistan before terming the practice sessions important to understand the condition as they are touring the nation for the first time.

“I am very excited to be here again in Pakistan. I had a great time before when I was here for the exhibition match and now I am looking forward to a memorable time.

“It’s our first-ever tour to Pakistan, so the training sessions ahead of the T20I series will be very important to help us understand the conditions here.

“This is going to be a big series, a closely contested one. Pakistan is a very competitive side, and Nida is a very good captain. They have very talented young players on their side, so we are up for a very good series.

“I will encourage the fans to come; it’s going to be exciting cricket matches in the evening, and definitely, people should come and support.”
