Ravichandran Ashwin to leave Rajkot Test midway

RAJKOT: India’s experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn himself from the ongoing third Test against England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Friday.

According to the BCCI, Ashwin opted to leave the ongoing Rajkot Test midway due to a “family emergency”.

“In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin,” stated BCCI in a press release.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance. The Board requests respect for the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they navigate through this challenging time.

“The Board and the team will continue to provide any necessary assistance to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to offer support as needed. Team India appreciates the understanding and empathy of the fans and media during this sensitive period.”

Earlier today, Ravichandran Ashwin became the second-fastest bowler to take 500 wickets in Test cricket.

Ashwin began the Rajkot Test on 499 wickets and dismissed Zak Crawley (15) to claim his 500th wicket, becoming the ninth bowler to achieve this feat.

He took only 98 Tests to reach the landmark, which is the second-fastest, while Sri Lankan legend Muthiah Muralidaran is the fastest as he took only 87 Test matches.

He is only the second Indian bowler to reach the milestone after fellow spinner Anil Kumble (619).

Meanwhile, Ashwin also became the fifth spinner across the globe to join the elite 500-wicket club after Kumble, Muralidaran, Shane Warne and Nathan Lyon.

Ravichandran Ashwin, 37, has played 98 Tests since his debut in 2011 against West Indies in Delhi and bowled Darren Bravo to claim his first wicket.

In addition to his tally of 500 wickets, he has also scored 3,308 runs including five Test centuries in his 13-year long Test career.

Ben Duckett’s ton keeps England afloat in third India Test

RAJKOT: Opener Ben Duckett led England’s fightback with a brisk century and propelled the visitors to 207/2 in response to India’s 445 on Day 2 of the third Test of the five-match series here on Friday.

The left-handed opener amassed his third Test hundred in just 88 balls as England made 207-2 to cut their deficit by 238 runs after bowling out India for 445.

Duckett, unbeaten on 133 alongside Joe Root (nine) will now resume England’s strong reply on Day 3.

Ben Duckett came out all guns blazing and despite disciplined opening spells by the Indian pacers, smashed regular boundaries amid his 80-ball opening stand of 84 with Zak Crawley, who 15 off 28.

The solid opening stand was broken by Ravichandran Ashwin, who dismissed Crawley after Tea to complete 500 wickets in Test cricket, becoming only the second Indian to achieve the milestone after legendary spinner Anil Kumble (619).

Duckett then partnered with Olly Stone for a 93-run stand and brought up his century in the process by hitting a boundary off Mohammed Siraj, who got out the latter to break the 93-run stand.

“To be that far behind in the game and go out and play like that showed real bravery and skill,” England quick Mark Wood said of Duckett’s knock.

“The way India changed the field and then he’d hit it somewhere else, it was such a skilful innings against a good attack.”

“I’m delighted, the way him and Zak go out together and put pressure on the opposition,” said Wood, who took four wickets in India’s innings.

Earlier in the day, India resumed their first innings at an overnight score of 326/5 with Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav on strike.

The overnight pair of Jadeja and Kuldeep could add five runs to India’s tally before both perished in a span of six deliveries, bringing India down to 331/7.

However, important contributions from Dhruv Jurel (46), Ashwin (37) and Jasprit Bumrah (26) lifted them to a formidable total.

Express pacer Mark Wood remained the star with the ball for England, picking up four wickets, while Rehan Ahmed bagged two.

Tom Hartley, Joe Root and James Anderson struck out a batter apiece.

Ravichandran Ashwin becomes the second-fastest to take 500 Test wickets

RAJKOT: Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become the second-fastest bowler to take 500 wickets in Test cricket during the first innings of the third Test against England here on Friday.

Ashwin began the Rajkot Test on 499 wickets and dismissed Zak Crawley (15) to claim his 500th wicket, becoming the ninth bowler to achieve this feat.

Before taking his 500th wicket, he was charged by the umpire for running in the middle of the pitch during India’s first innings. This resulted in a five-run penalty for the hosts.

Ashwin was reprimanded by on-field umpire Joel Wilson on the morning of day two in Rajkot and England started their innings with five for no loss as a result of the offence.

India get five-run penalty after Ashwin run in danger zone

RAJKOT: India were penalised five runs after the umpire charged batter Ravichandran Ashwin for running in the middle of the pitch in the third Test against England here on Friday.

Ashwin was reprimanded by on-field umpire Joel Wilson on the morning of day two in Rajkot and England will start their innings with five for no loss as a result of the offence.

Ashwin attempted to argue his case with Wilson, who then put his arm around the batsman’s shoulder and indicated five to signal the penalty.

According to the laws of cricket, “deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch” is an offence.

“It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter,” law 41.14 states.

“A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”

Prior to Ashwin, fellow spinner Ravindra Jadeja was also warned for running on the pitch on the opening day.

England will now start their first innings with five runs on the board after being awarded the penalty runs in the 102nd over of India’s first innings.

Former England captain Alastair Cook called out Ashwin for deliberately run in the danger zone to gain an advantage during bowling in England’s innings.

“Is it deliberate? Yes, it is,” Cook said. “It’s a tactical ploy that you can disturb the middle of the wicket because Ashwin wants as much help [as possible] when he can bowl.”

India make one change in ICC World Cup 2023 squad

Hosts India on Thursday, made a forced change to their already-announced squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 as Ravichandran Ashwin replaced Axar Patel.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel, who suffered a strain to his left quadriceps amid India’s ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023 fixture against Bangladesh, failed to recuperate in time for the ICC World Cup 2023.

The all-rounder was consequently replaced by experienced Ravichandran Ashwin for the mega event.

Notably, Ashwin made a timely comeback to ODI cricket in the recently concluded home series against Australia, taking four wickets in two matches.

Prior to that, the experienced all-rounder last played an ODI in January 2022.

Ravichandran Ashwin will serve as India’s lone specialist off-spinner in their 15-member squad, and one of just two players, along with star batsman Virat Kohli, who featured in India’s World Cup-winning run in 2011.

The rest of the India squad remained the same and their skipper Rohit Sharma emphasized that the group was clear about their Final 15 and any changes to that will not disturb their approach.

“When we talk about the 15 we are very clear what we want,” India captain Rohit Sharma said Wednesday after the 2-1 series victory over Australia.

“We are not confused, we know where we are headed as a team.

“It’s a team sport and we want everyone to come and play their part – that’s how we win championships. It’s about looking after the body and try and stay fresh for the next one and half months.”

India’s Squad for ICC World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma (capt), Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

Ashwin dismantles West Indies as India secure innings win

Ravichandran Ashwin’s seven-wicket second innings demolition job underlined his utter dominance of an inept West Indies team who crashed to defeat by an innings and 141 runs late on the third day of the first Test against India in Dominica on Friday.

It was India’s largest margin of victory in a Test match in the West Indies and maintains an unbeaten run spanning more than 21 years against these opponents going into the second and final Test starting next Thursday in Trinidad.

After Rohit Sharma declared the tourists’ first innings closed at 421 for five, 40 minutes into the afternoon session, first day destroyers Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja wasted little time in adding to that first innings success to skittle the Caribbean team for 130 in just over 50 overs.

Ashwin fittingly ended the match by trapping last man Jomel Warrican leg-before.

His haul of 7-71 lifted his match figures to 12 -131 -– his eighth match haul of 10 wickets or more in Tests — while the support of Jadeja kept relentless pressure on a home side technically and temperamentally incapable of coping with such quality spin bowling on a helpful pitch.

Debutant Alick Athanaze was again the top scorer with 28 but his effort paled in comparison to his Indian counterpart as opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal led the way in India’s only innings with a determined, dedicated innings of 171 which spanned more than eight hours and occupied 387 deliveries.

That effort earned him the man of the match award notwithstanding the fantastic bowling figures of Ashwin.

“This experience has been a special moment,” said the 21-year-old left-hander. “I used to think about playing for my country when I was young. It is an emotional moment for me but this just the start.”

For West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the emotions were the exact opposite on a forgettable day personally and for his team.

“I didn’t think it spun a lot early on, we just let ourselves down with the bat,” said the opener, a comment which immediately raised a few eyebrows given how the pitch behaved virtually from the first session.

“Senior guys, starting with myself, have to lead the way. We have to use the bat more instead of our pads.”

As on day one, Brathwaite and opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul had to cope with spin just minutes into the start of the second innings and although he was dropped on nought Ashwin eventually put him out of his misery.

He had missed a straightforward chance at short extra-cover in the morning offered by Virat Kohli off left-arm spinner Warrican.

Dropped at 40, Kohli went on to get 76 before falling to Rahkeem Cornwall just after lunch. The burly off-spinner was only allowed to bowl after the morning period because of time spent off the field on the first day when he was unwell.

Earlier, West Indies finally prised out Jaiswal and added the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane pre-lunch.

Jaiswal was finally undone by the extra pace and bounce extracted by fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in edging a catch to wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva after an hour’s play.

Top-ranked Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin in awe of Pakistan bowling attack

India’s experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Friday, heaped praise on Pakistan’s bowling attack ahead of the ICC Men’s World Cup, scheduled to commence on October 5.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the top-ranked Test bowler, believes that Pakistan are equipped with a quality pace bowling attack and that the last previous clashes between the arch-rivals have been extraordinary.

“Match between Pakistan and India in the World Cup will be a blockbuster,” said Ashwin. “The last few matches between the arch-rivals have been extraordinary.”

“Pakistan have a quality pace attack and it is going to be a balanced match.”

It is apropos to mention that the most anticipated clash of the upcoming World Cup between arch-rivals Pakistan and India will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world with a capacity of 132,000.

Earlier this week, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the anticipated schedule of the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

As per the ICC-released schedule, a total of 10 teams will participate in the mega event – featuring 45 matches – and compete for the prestigious silverware across 10 venues from October 5 to November 19.

Like the previous edition, the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 will also be played in a round-robin format – each team playing nine matches with the rest of the opponents.

The top four teams by the end of the group stage will qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled to be held in Mumbai on November 15 and in Kolkata on November 16.

Whereas, the final of the tournament will take place on November 19 at the grand Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Notably, all three knockout matches of the ICC Men’s World Cup will have a reserve day.

Ashwin drops rating points, tied with Anderson as No. 1 Test bowler

DUBAI: India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dropped six rating points as per the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Test bowling rankings released on Wednesday but retained the top spot with England’s pacer James Anderson.

Ashwin, who surged to the top spot in the Test bowling rankings last week, saw a frustrating dip in his rating points as he could take four wickets in two innings of the third Test against Australia.

A slump in the spinner’s rating points, allowed Anderson to share the top spot with 859 points each.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi also jumped a spot in the rankings and replaced his Indian counterpart Jasprit Bumrah to capture the fifth spot.

Australia’s third Test hero Nathan Lyon got the reward of his magnificent bowling figures as the right-arm spinner stormed into the Top 10 rankings, jumping six places to claim ninth rank.

Ashwin likely to join Indian squad in England ahead of warm-up match

NEW DELHI: Indian veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was tested positive for the COVID-19, is now likely to join the squad in the United Kingdom (UK) ahead of their warm-up match, scheduled on June 24, Indian media reported.

The right-arm spinner is currently undergoing quartine and will only join the Indian squad after meeting all the protocol requirements.

According to the details, off-spinner Jayant Yadav is considered a possible replacement in case Ashwin does not make a timely recovery, Hindustan Times reported.

Ashwin was a member of the initial India team that toured England for the first four Tests last year but failed to make it to the Playing XI in any of the contests. His brilliant performance in the Test against Sri Lanka in March may result in him booking his spot in the side, in which the right-arm spinner bagged six wickets.

Head coach Rahul Dravid and batters Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant have joined the rest of the squad in Leicester after the conclusion of the home T20I series against South Africa.

Indian vice-captain KL Rahul, on the other hand, who was ruled out of the England tour as he will be travelling to Germany for the treatment of his groin injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are yet to announce the replacement for the opener.

Ashwin tests positive for Covid before departure, misses England flight

NEW DELHI: Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has tested positive for Covid-19 and missed the flight to England for the upcoming rescheduled Test against England.

Ashwin has undergone quartine and will only join the Indian squad after meeting all the protocol requirements, reports the EspnCricinfo website.

“Ashwin hasn’t traveled with the squad to the UK as he has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure,” a BCCI source confirmed to Press Trust of India (PTI) as reported by the website.

“But we are hopeful that he will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1. However, he might miss the practice game against Leicestershire,” he added.

Meanwhile, the head coach Rahul Dravid along with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant will join the squad shortly in Leicestershire as they have already reached London after concluding the home T20I series against South Africa.

The rest of the Indian contingent is already in Leicestershire and undergoing training sessions under the supervision of bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour.

India will play the one-off Test against England from July 1 to July 5 to complete the five-match Test series that ended abruptly last year. India is currently leading the series 2-1. Rohit Sharma will captain the Indian side for the first time in an overseas Test.

The touring side will also play three T20I matches and as many ODIs against the hosts during the tour.
