Shaheen Shah Afridi returns as Pakistan name squad for Sri Lanka Tests

LAHORE: Ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi returned to Pakistan’s Test squad for the two-match away series against Sri Lanka next month.

The men’s national selection committee has also included uncapped batter Mohammad Huraira and all-rounder Aamir Jamal in the 16-strong squad for what will be Pakistan’s first assignment in the third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (vc & wk), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood

The squad has been designed keeping in mind the conditions that the team will encounter in Sri Lanka. The team boasts four spinners, four fast bowlers, six specialist batters and two keeper-batters.

Shaheen is one wicket away from reaching a century of Test wickets and no Pakistan bowler has picked up more wickets than him since the left-armer made his debut on 3 December 2018. Shaheen, 23, averages 24.86 and has an economy of 3.04.

Expressing his pleasure to be back in the Test side, Shaheen said: “I am very excited to be returning to the Pakistan Test side after a year. I dearly missed Test cricket and it was tough for me to be away from this format.

“After missing our entire home season because of the injury I suffered in Sri Lanka, I am eager to make an impactful comeback in the same country and complete a century of wickets in Test cricket. I want to thank my fans who have provided me support in tough times and I am ready for the challenges ahead.”

Huraira has played 24 first-class, 10 List A and six T20s and he has earned the spot after an impressive run. He was the leading run-scorer in the last two iterations of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In the 2022-23 edition, the 21-year-old, who hails from Sialkot, was the only batter to breach the 1000-run mark, playing an integral role in helping Northern to maiden first-class title. In 11 matches, Huraira smashed four centuries and two half-centuries on his way to 1,024 runs at an average of 73.14.

He continued his first-class form on the tour of Zimbabwe last month scoring 178 and 64 against Zimbabwe A at Kwekwe and Mutare.

He holds the record for being the second youngest batter to score a first-class triple-century in Pakistan, behind legendary Javed Miandad. Huraira achieved the feat in the 2021-22 season, hitting 311 off 343 in Northern’s thumping win of an innings and 170 runs over Balochistan at the State Bank Ground, Karachi.

Huraira will be joined by his Northern and Shaheens’ teammate Aamir. The 27-year-old, who hails from Mianwali, topped the wicket-takers chart for the fast bowlers in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23, taking 31 scalps at 29.71 and recorded two five-wicket hauls. He was the leading wicket-taker in the recent six-match One-Day series between Zimbabwe Select and Pakistan Shaheens with 16 dismissals at an average of 21.

Aamir’s career’s highlight, however, was defending 15 runs in the last over against England’s Moeen Ali on his Pakistan debut in September last year. Aamir’s immaculate death bowling helped Pakistan to a thrilling six-run win over England in the fifth T20 International of the seven-match series. Aamir has the experience of two T2oIs, 23 first-class, 23 List A and 20 T20s.

Reflecting on the squad, Haroon Rashid, the national men’s chief selector, said: “I want to congratulate all the players who have been selected in the side, especially Mohammad Huraira and Aamir Jamal who have pushed their case through impressive performances over a period of time.

“We have devised this squad with the conditions and challenges that our players will encounter in Sri Lanka. This is our first series of the third round of the ICC World Test Championship and this squad is fully capable of providing us a solid start.

“The conditions in Sri Lanka largely favour finger spinners – something that we have seen over the years and during Pakistan’s last visit to the island – so we have three such bowlers to go with the mystery spin of Abrar Ahmed. At the same time, we cannot overlook the need for fast bowlers and, as such, we have included four pacers so the captain and team management have ample resources on the tour. We boast a strong batting line-up, which I am confident will do well in the two matches.

“The players who have missed out on the selection should not get bogged down as they firmly remain part of our plans. We have an exciting and challenging season ahead of us and they should make the most of the opportunities in domestic cricket and Shaheens’ tours to keep themselves ready.”

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board has also announced the appointment of Morne Morkel as the national side’s bowling coach. The former South Africa pacer has joined the national side on a six-month contract. Over the course of his 11-year-long international career, Morkel took 309 wickets in 86 Tests, 188 wickets in 117 ODIs and 47 scalps in 44 T20Is. His last international game was in Lahore for World XI against Pakistan in September 2017.

Player support personnel: Rehan-ul-Haq (team manager), Grant Bradburn (head coach), Andrew Puttick (batting coach), Morne Morkel (bowling coach), Aftab Khan (fielding coach), Abdul Rehman (assistant coach), Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Ahsan Iftikhar Nagi (media and digital content manager), Lt Col Usman Anwari (Retd) (security manager), Talha Ejaz (analyst) and Malang Ali (masseur).

Pakistan will assemble in Karachi on 3 July for a camp ahead of their departure for Sri Lanka on 9 July. The itinerary of the tour will be announced by Sri Lanka Cricket in due course.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka last played a Test series in July 2022 that was drawn 1-1.

Shaheen Shah Afridi steals the show in T20 Blast

DERBY: Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi once again impressed with his all-round brilliance and powered Nottinghamshire to a three-wicket victory over Derbyshire in the ongoing T20 Blast.

Shaheen Shah Afridi has been a valuable asset for Nottinghamshire in the ongoing edition of the T20 Blast, not just with the ball but also with the bat.

In his side’s latest away fixture against Derbyshire, Shaheen Shah Afridi shone with the ball and took two wickets for just 37 runs in his quota of four overs.

After going wicketless in his first spell, the left-arm pacer returned to breathe fire and disrupted Derbyshire’s expedition for a commendable total and the home side could only accumulate 142/6 in 20 overs.

Shaheen Shah Afridi struck in each of his last two overs and removed Brook Guest (25) and Tom Wood (4).

Set to chase a modest 143, Nottinghamshire’s batting lineup struggled and slipped to 123/6 in 17 overs despite notable contributions by Alex Hales (35) and Samit Patel (28).

Coming out to bat at No.8 when his side needed a further 20 runs in three overs, Shaheen Shah Afridi seized the opportunity to showcase his batting abilities and played an important cameo of 14 runs off just seven deliveries.

He smashed two sixes in his brief yet clutch knock and made the task easier for Nottinghamshire before his Lahore Qalandars’ teammate Zaman Khan removed him.

Following his late fireworks, Nottinghamshire completed the pursuit with eight balls to spare and edged Derbyshire by three wickets.

The three-wicket victory over Derbyshire propelled Nottinghamshire to the top of the T20 Blast North Group standings with 12 points in nine matches.

Smith calls Babar Azam, Shaheen challenge for Australia in home Tests

Veteran Test batter Steve Smith has spoken highly of Pakistan captain Babar Azam and star pacer Shaheen Afridi, calling them the players the home side must ‘look out for’ when Pakistan tour Australia later this year.

In a video shared by Cricket Australia, Steve Smith lauded the Pakistan skipper for his exceptional batting records and improvement over the years.

“Babar Azam is a wonderful player. In the last few years, he has got better and better. He is someone we have to look out for. He is dangerous, he makes big scores and he usually does it at a pretty good pace as well,” said Steve Smith.

Babar Azam is currently the fifth-ranked batter in the longest format, scoring 3696 runs in 47 Tests for Pakistan at an average of 48.6.

In the same breath, Steve Smith also praised the left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi and warned that Australian batters had to be careful while facing him.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi, he came out here [Australia] last series. Since then, he’s got better and better. The ability to swing it back is obviously a big key for him so he’s certainly one we’ll have to look out for this year,” he said.

The right-hand batter also lauded the Pakistani cricket fans for coming out in numbers to support their team in every part of the world.

“Pakistan is such a proud cricketing nation. They have got supporters all around the world. Their fans come in numbers to watch the match which gives real excitement,” Steve Smith concluded.

“If I didn’t get injured, maybe we could’ve won,” Shaheen Afridi on T20 WC

Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi commented on his heart-breaking injury in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 final against England and pointed at the possibility of Pakistan triumphing had he not been injured.

In the enthralling T20 World Cup final, Pakistan, batting first, set England to chase a mere 138 on a tricky Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) surface, which was making it difficult for the batters to score freely.

Pakistan’s pace attack, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, showcased determination not to let England run away with an easy victory as they rattled their top-order and restricted them to 45/3 in the sixth over.

Following the early setback, Ben Stokes and Harry Brook launched England’s recovery as the pair anchored the run chase with a crucial partnership.

Pakistan were in dire need of a breakthrough and they got it; courtesy of Shadab Khan, who deceived Brook with a loopy delivery outside off and the latter fired it straight to long-off where Shaheen Shah Afridi dove forward to gobble it.

The breakthrough, instead of a success, turned into a massive blow for the green shirts as they lost the services of their ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who hurt his injured knee in the process.

Shaheen then walked off the field briefly, returned to roars and raced in to bowl the 16th with England still requiring a tough 41 from 30 balls, but pulled up after one ball.

Ben Stokes then smashed a four and six off Iftikhar Ahmed, who was given the ball to complete the 16th, and it was over for Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Shaheen Shah Afridi has finally opened up on the heartbreaking incident in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo and also opined that Pakistan may have won if he did not get injured in such a clutch situation.

“And in this tournament [2022], if I didn’t get injured at such a crucial moment, maybe we could’ve won. Maybe if I had stayed fit and bowled…” he trails off. “Injuries can happen at any time,” said Shaheen.

The left-arm pacer also recalled the thrashing, he received from Matthew Wade in the previous edition, which ultimately steered Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup title.

“Obviously, it’s every player’s dream to win a World Cup for his country and I still remember 2021, how that ended,” he said.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, however, shared that he is trying to forget the past in order to be able to move forward.

“If I think too much about them then I won’t be able to move ahead,” Shaheen stated.

The left-arm pacer also responded to a question regarding a dip in his bowling speed post-injury and termed taking wickets more important than the pace.

“Everyone has a view about it [the pace], but I’ve been feeling good. You look at yourself, even if you are bowling 110kmph and taking wickets, you’re feeling good. I took wickets. I gave 100% in the field, that matters more. Speed doesn’t matter as much but if there has been a dip, it will improve with time.

“[I was injured] two months out before the [T20] World Cup, two-three months after the [T20] World Cup also. So it will of course take time to get back. That match energy or fitness, you only get it from playing matches. Since the PSL I’ve been feeling better, I got better through it and then played internationals for Pakistan as well. With time I’ll improve and the more I play the more I’ll improve.”

LAHORE: Pakistan’s white-ball squad celebrated the birthday of their ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi ahead of their upcoming home T20I and ODI series against New Zealand.

The national team on Friday took part in an extensive training session before throwing a birthday party for their leading pacer Shaheen, who turned 23 on Thursday.

Sarfaraz rates Amir higher than Shaheen

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed shared that he believes Mohammad Amir is a more skilful pacer than Pakistan’s current ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Sarfaraz, in a YouTube podcast, was asked to rate Mohammad Asif, Amir and Shaheen in light of their abilities as a pacer.

“I will put Asif at the number one position,” Sarfaraz responded.

“If you talk about skills, Amir is not playing international cricket right now. I think he should play international cricket but it is his decision. If Amir was playing right now, I would put Amir at two and Shaheen at number three,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that Sarfaraz is considered one of the most successful Pakistani captains. He is the only Pakistani captain two have won two ICC trophies — the Champions Trophy and U19 World Cup.

Shahid Afridi advises PCB on Shaheen’s injury

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to handle ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s knee injury very carefully.

Afridi, during a local news channel’s program, commented on left-arm pacer Shaheen’s injury and shared a piece of advice for both the latter and the PCB.

“Shaheen is now resting because he once again had his knee injured in the same place,” said Afridi.

“I think Shaheen should rest for at least 2-3 months for recovery and be careful while fielding,” he added.

Shahid Afridi also advised Shaheen to be careful with his fielding and not to dive into a position that would require him to go to rehab again.

“He has to play very carefully now and PCB will also have to make sure,” Afridi said.

The former Pakistan captain also responded to the speculations regarding Shaheen playing the recently-concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in spite of the injury and asserted that the latter would not have been able to bowl even two overs in the final.

Meanwhile, PCB Medical Officer Dr Najeebullah Soomro and Australian knee specialist Dr Peter D’Alessandro cleared Shaheen of any serious injury and advised the pacer for rehabilitation of 2-3 weeks.
