Shan Masood admits Pakistan ‘let the game slip’ after Rawalpindi Test defeat

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has accepted his team’s shortcomings following the eight-wicket defeat to South Africa in the second Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Speaking after the match, Masood praised South Africa’s resilience while acknowledging Pakistan’s failure to seize key moments that could have sealed the series.

“Hindsight is always there, but credit must go to the opposition; they kept fighting till the end,” said Masood. “If someone had told us after the first two days that we’d be in this position, we would’ve taken it.”

Pakistan appeared well-placed after taking a 98-run lead in the first innings, but a record-breaking last-wicket stand between Senuran Muthusamy and Kagiso Rabada turned the contest on its head.

Shan Masood admitted that the momentum shift in that short phase proved decisive.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish well with the ball, and that last-wicket stand really hurt us,” he said.

“We were 98 runs ahead with just two wickets to take, but we let the game slip in a costly 30-minute phase where we missed our chances.”

Despite the defeat, Masood remained optimistic about Pakistan’s overall performance in the ongoing Test season, highlighting the team’s recent consistency in challenging conditions.

“Still, with four wins out of six on these kinds of wickets, that’s not a bad record, especially considering how close we came in the two losses,” he reflected.

“As a team, you’re never perfect, but four out of six is definitely something to build on.”

Saud holds firm as South Africa’s late strike leave opening day evenly poised

RAWALPINDI: Shan Masood’s composed knock and Abdullah Shafique’s hard-fought fifty laid a solid platform for Pakistan, but South Africa clawed back with late strikes to leave the opening day of the second Test finely balanced.

At the end of day one here at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Pakistan were 259-5. Saud Shakeel remained unbeaten on 42 from 105 balls while Salman Ali Agha scored 10* from 25 deliveries.

The home side continued their innings from 177-3 after the tea break, with skipper Shan Masood adding 35 more runs with Saud Shakeel.

The scorecard read 212 when the visitors got a vital breakthrough in the form of Masood. The southpaw made 87 from 176 balls, striking three sixes and two fours.

With the wicket of the set batter in the dying hours of the day, South Africa sensed an opening as Mohammad Rizwan arrived at the crease. He added another 34 runs with Shakeel before getting caught for 19 from 39 deliveries.

Consequenlty, Pakistan were reduced to 245-6 with still few overs to play. However, Salman Ali Agha and Shakeel added 13* more and survived the day to set up an intriguing second day’s play.

For South Africa, Simon Harmer and returning Keshav Maharaj were pick of the bowlers, scalping two apiece, whereas Kagiso Rabada had one to his name in the wickets column.

At tea break, Pakistan made 177-3 with skipper Shan Masood standing firm on 77 off 144 balls alongside Saud Shakeel, who was unbeaten on 6, steering Pakistan to a steady position after a productive afternoon session.

Resuming at 95-1 after lunch, Masood and Abdullah Shafique extended their second-wicket partnership, adding 111 valuable runs to keep the Proteas at bay.

Both batters brought up well-crafted fifties, Masood his 13th in Test cricket and Shafique his sixth, as the pair looked set for a big stand before South Africa found a way back.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer, who had struck earlier in the morning session, broke through once again, dismissing Shafique for 57 off 146 deliveries.

The dismissal ended what had been a resilient partnership that formed the backbone of Pakistan’s innings.

Soon after, Keshav Maharaj joined the act, removing Babar Azam for 16 off 22 balls, leaving the hosts at 167-3 in 56 overs.

Despite the quick wickets, Masood held his composure, mixing solid defence with timely aggression to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Earlier, Pakistan had opted to bat first after winning the toss. Openers Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique started confidently, negotiating the new ball well before Harmer provided the breakthrough by bowling Imam for 17 off 35 balls.

Masood’s arrival immediately shifted momentum back in Pakistan’s favour as the left-hander took the attack to South Africa’s spinners, striking three sixes and a boundary before lunch.

He and Shafique ensured Pakistan headed into the first break comfortably placed at 95-1.

Pakistan entered the match with one change from the opening Test, handing a long-awaited Test debut to 38-year-old left-arm spinner Asif Afridi, who replaced Hasan Ali.

South Africa, meanwhile, welcomed back Keshav Maharaj from injury, while Marco Jansen also returned, replacing Wiaan Mulder and Prenelan Subrayen.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan began their ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign in style last week, defeating defending champions South Africa by 93 runs in Karachi to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Shan Masood lauds team effort after Test victory over South Africa

LAHORE: Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood praised his side’s resilience and collective effort after they defeated World Test Champions South Africa by 93 runs in the first Test at the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

The win handed Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, marking a strong statement against one of the toughest red-ball sides in world cricket.

Reflecting on the hard-fought contest, Shan acknowledged South Africa’s fightback and credited his players for maintaining composure under pressure.

“There were a lot of challenges out in the middle. Credit to South Africa, they kept coming back, but we built enough margins to have the upper hand, and I’m glad we finished it off,” Shan said during the post-match presentation.

The skipper also touched upon Pakistan’s tactical approach on turning surfaces, emphasising the balance between spin and pace that proved decisive in Lahore.

“Historically, we have always played on such surfaces. Even when we’ve gone spin-heavy, we included a seamer or two because we want reverse swing to come into play,” he said.

“Test cricket is a collective effort. Sajid was unlucky with his injury, and Noman is Noman,” he remarked, applauding the left-arm spinner’s stellar display.

Noman Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi were Pakistan’s heroes in the second innings, sharing eight wickets to bowl South Africa out for 183.

Concluding his remarks, Shan Masood hailed the victory as a significant milestone for the side.

“There are a lot of positives to draw from this game. It’s a great opportunity to play against the team that won the WTC, and we closed it out with a win today. Now, we look forward to the next one,” he said.

Pakistan will now head to Rawalpindi, where the second and final Test of the series will be played from October 20 to 24.

Shan prioritises 20 wickets over big runs ahead of South Africa Tests

LAHORE: Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood has unveiled the key to his team’s success in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, which begins tomorrow here at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Speaking at the pre-series press conference, Shan emphasized a result-oriented approach and revealed Pakistan’s mantra for winning the Test series.

“We don’t want flat tracks where matches end in draws. “Sometimes you sacrifice runs to create situations where 20 wickets are possible,” he told reporters.

While speaking on Babar Azam and his own performance, he highlighted small but vital contributions with the bat.

“In such conditions, even a fifty can be a match-defining contribution. Performance should be judged in context — it’s about winning moments, not averages,” he said.

Shan also praised World Test Champions South Africa, calling them a world-class side.

“To play in our home conditions against them is a great opportunity for us. Any challenge in the Test championship is always going to test you, but for us, it allows us to measure ourselves against the best team in the world, and hopefully, we can put in a good performance, and we will know that we are right up there, and we are right up in the rankings,” he remarked.

He also mentioned a strong start in the new WTC cycle, stating that they want to fully capitalize on the home advantage, citing the performances of winning teams at their home.

“The idea is to use our home advantage wisely. It is very important, and I think, if you look at the teams that have played the final and won the championship, they have done well in their home conditions,” he said.

“For us, it is about finding that improvement at home, and it is very important to start off well, ” he concluded.

PCB addresses speculation on Rizwan, Shan Masood’s Captaincy Future

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responded to rumours about the removal of Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masood from their roles as white-ball and red-ball captains on Monday.

Speculation had been rife that Shan Masood could be replaced by Saud Shakeel as Test captain, while reports also suggested Mohammad Rizwan’s position as ODI captain was under threat.

However, PCB sources have categorically denied these claims, terming them “baseless.”

They confirmed that there is no proposal under consideration to remove Shan from the Test captaincy, nor is there any plan to appoint Saud as his replacement.

Similarly, the board dismissed talk of Mohammad Rizwan being stripped of the ODI captaincy, clarifying that Salman Ali Agha is not being considered for the role.

The sources further added that the selection committee has not discussed any such matter, nor has there been any change in the category of players’ central contracts.

Pakistan are currently preparing for the Tri-Nation Series, featuring Afghanistan and the UAE, scheduled to be played in Sharjah from August 29 to September 7.

Shan Masood signs all-format deal with Leicestershire

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood is set to play county cricket for Leicestershire in the 2025 season, having signed an all-format contract with the club.

The 35-year-old left-handed opener, who led Pakistan to a historic Test series win against England last year, will bring a wealth of experience to the club.

Masood is expected to join Leicestershire in May, following the conclusion of Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10, and is likely to make his debut on May 31 against his former county, Derbyshire.

With this move, Masood’s stint with Yorkshire comes to an end, following a two-year deal that saw him captain the side from 2023.

During his tenure at Headingley, he played a crucial role in securing Yorkshire’s promotion back to Division One, amassing 1,240 County Championship runs at an impressive 53.91 average in 15 matches.

Before joining Yorkshire, Masood had an outstanding season with Derbyshire in 2022, where he racked up 1,078 first-class runs at 82.61.

Shan Masood, who has been capped 90 times for Pakistan across all formats, joins club captain Peter Handscomb and Netherlands all-rounder Logan van Beek as Leicestershire’s overseas signings for the 2025 season.

With no Test matches scheduled for Pakistan during the English summer, he is expected to be available for the entire county season, unless recalled for Pakistan’s white-ball tour of the West Indies in July.

“I am really excited to have the chance to play all three formats for Leicestershire. I have always admired the club and have had great conversations with a lot of the team during the last three seasons,” Masood said in a statement released on Tuesday.

“I love playing at Uptonsteel County Ground. The fans get behind the team in strong numbers and the games I have been a part of have always been a great spectacle.

“The club has been very competitive in all formats and produced some fantastic young players over the last few years. It is an exciting time to join the Foxes.”

WATCH: Shan Masood engages in heated exchange with journalist questioning his future

MULTAN: Pakistan red-ball captain Shan Masood engaged in a heated exchange with a journalist during the press conference after his team’s 120-run defeat in the second Test against West Indies here on Monday.

After Pakistan’s loss, a journalist questioned Shan Masood’s captaincy and his future in the role.

Shan, visibly frustrated by the question and its tone, initially opted to move on, saying, “Next question.” However, the journalist interrupted, asking for a response, which prompted a heated reply.

“You have your opinion and I respect that but there is a lot of disrespect in your question. You can’t show disrespect to players, me and the others,” Shan Masood stated.

“Your question was very insulting. You tried to undermine someone with your question.

“If you want to talk about facts, feel free to, but your information is completely wrong. You can express your opinion but do some research first.

Shan Masood stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is the decision-making body and every player will accept whatever their decision is.

He further stressed that as a player, their job is to give their best for the team and they deserve respect for their efforts.

“Making decisions is PCB’s job, and all decisions, including mine, are accepted by everyone,” he added.

“We play for Pakistan, and everything we do is to bring results but no one will tolerate such disrespect. You have to understand that.

“You have to understand and appreciate that we are trying to do something different and you must study that. Anyone can google something but we are trying to do something and we have won three out of the last four Tests at home.”

Shan Masood opens up after Pakistan’s loss in second West Indies Test

MULTAN: Pakistan captain Shan Masood has shared the reasons behind his team’s 120-run defeat in the second Test against West Indies here on Monday.

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican claimed a five-wicket haul to bundle Pakistan for 133 in the second innings to help his team level the two-match series 1-1.

This was West Indies’ first Test win in Pakistan since their seven-wicket triumph under the captaincy of Desmond Haynes in Faisalabad back in 1990.

Shan Masood, during the post-match presentation, acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, while giving credit to West Indies’ batters for their effort on a challenging pitch.

“They batted well, but that’s something that we have to learn. We have struggled to get the tail out here, something that we did well in South Africa and Australia,” said Masood.

“Even in the game we lost right now, the first day, we were in a position where we wanted to be, just one bad performance and it led to a domino effect.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“But you can’t forget the way we have played right through. We have realised that one extra partnership can have a big effect on games, that’s what we want to learn quickly.”

Masood also highlighted that Pakistan have done well since turning to spin-friendly pitches and there are some positives even in this defeat.

“We did win 3 of the 4 Tests on such pitches, we did well on the first session here as well. It’s important to see some encouraging signs,” he added.

“Saud [Shakeel] and Rizzy [Mohammad Rizwan] got their fifties, I got a 60-ball fifty in the first Test, and Babar [Azam] contributed as well.

“We might not get those big hundreds, but you need to be proactive, Brathwaite took the game on with his 50 and that’s what we need to be aware of and probably be better going further.”

Shan Masood defends Pakistan’s spin-spiced formula in Test cricket

Pakistan skipper Shan Masood defended the formula of using spin-friendly pitches to win home Test matches after a 127-run victory over the West Indies in Multan on Sunday.

Pakistan completed the win before tea on the third day as spinners Sajid Khan grabbed 5-50 and Abrar Ahmed finished with 4-27 to dismiss the West Indies for 123 after setting a 251-run target.

The Test lasted fewer than eight sessions on a dry and grassless Multan Stadium pitch, with spinners taking 34 of the 40 wickets to fall.

Sajid finished with nine wickets, fellow spinner Noman Ali six and the West Indian left-armer Jomel Warrican took a maiden 10-wicket haul.

Pakistan bowled just one over of pace in the match.

“If we want to be a top side in the World Test Championship then we have to sacrifice some things, like we did with the fast bowling in this Test,” Shan Masood said.

Pakistan made drastic changes after going winless in 11 home Tests since 2021, using industrial fans and patio heaters to dry the Multan pitch against England last year.

Sajid and Noman took 39 of the 40 wickets to give Pakistan a come-from-behind 2-1 series win against England, repeating the same ploy against the West Indies.

Pakistan and West Indies will play the second Test from January 25 at the same venue.

Meanwhile, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite had no issue with Pakistan making spin-friendly pitches.

“They’re at home so they got their decision how they want the pitch to behave,” said Brathwaite. “It was a difficult pitch to bat on for sure.”

“We expect the same type of pitch in the second Test so we got to come better with bravery and belief.”

Left-hander Alick Athanaze hit the only half-century for the tourists in the match with 55, an innings Brathwaite wants his batters to learn from.

“He swept it on both sides so we just have to be brave,” said Brathwaite. “We have got one more Test and we have to believe in ourselves.”
