PSL 8: Young Irfan eager to learn from ‘idol’ Shoaib Malik in Karachi Kings

LAHORE: Young middle-order batter Muhammad Irfan Khan has set his sights to learn from his idol veteran Shoaib Malik during his stint for Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) most followed franchise Karachi Kings in the upcoming eighth edition.

Irfan, a product of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) age-group programme, is aiming to perform well in his maiden PSL season while also looking forward to interacting with his idol Malik and learning valuable batting tips from him.

“Getting selected for the first time in the PSL is certainly a satisfying feeling. I want to perform well in this tournament as the PSL stage propels you to the limelight and you can boost your case for selection in the national team,” said Irfan.

“In Karachi Kings, I will have the opportunity of interacting with my cricketing idol Shoaib Malik, who has a lot of experience playing for Pakistan and in leagues around the globe. He is also a middle-order batter like me so I will definitely use the opportunity to learn from him,” he added.

The 20-year-old further termed former Peshawar Zalmi’s captain Darren Sammy’s heroics against Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2018 his favourite moment as the latter led his team to triumph after a tricky run chase despite the injury.

“Daren Sammy’s heroics for Peshawar Zalmi in the HBL PSL 2018 match against Quetta Gladiators was a memorable moment. He was unfit during the chase but still helped Peshawar win the match at a time when they required 16 off 7 balls,” Irfan concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that Irfan has represented Pakistan in two ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2020 and 2022.

The right-handed batter accumulated 141 runs in nine innings in the National T20 2022-23 at a strike rate of 153.26 with a 31-ball 57 against Balochistan being the highlight of his campaign.

‘Super proud’ Shoaib hails Sania Mirza on Grand Slam retirement

LAHORE: Pakistan’s veteran cricketer Shoaib Malik congratulated her wife Sania Mirza on her retirement from grand slam Tennis after losing in the Australian Open 2023 final in the Mixed Doubles on Friday.

Sania, who paired with compatriot Rohan Bopanna in the ongoing grand slam, failed to finish her glittering career on a high as the duo lost 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 to Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos.

Notably, the Indian Tennis star had termed Australian Open 2023 to be her last grand slam as she announced her retirement earlier this month.

Following her retirement from the grand slam, her husband and former Pakistan captain Shoaib took to Twitter and congratulated her on an unbelievable career.

“You are the much-needed hope for all the women in sports. Super proud of you for all you have achieved in your career,” wrote Shoaib.

“You’re an inspiration for many, keep going strong. Many congratulations on an unbelievable career,” he added.

It is worth mentioning that Sania is regarded as her country’s greatest woman to play the sport.

The 36-year-old Tennis star broke into tears during the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Rohan was my first-ever mixed-doubles partner at (aged) 14 and we won the nationals,” said Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion, three in doubles and three in mixed.

“It was a long time ago, 22 years ago, and I couldn’t think of a better person — he’s one of my best friends and best partners — to finish my career here and to play the final.

“There’s no better place for me, or person for me, to finish my Grand Slam career.”

Following her grand slam retirement, Sania will now partake in Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and will call time on her professional career.

The professional tournament is scheduled to take place from February 5 to 12 in Dubai.

Shoaib suggests to include Sarfaraz in ODIs too after Test comeback

KARACHI: Pakistan’s former captain Shoaib Malik has suggested trying Sarfaraz Ahmed in One Day Internationals also following his sensational comeback in Tests after four years.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Shoaib hailed the decision of interim PCB chief selector Shahid Afridi for giving him a chance in playing XI, adding: “I would suggest to use him in ODIs too as he is very handy in the middle overs.”

“Smart decision by Lala @SAfridiOfficial (Shahid Afridi) to use @SarfarazA_54 (Sarfaraz Ahmed) in test playing 11 today. I would suggest to use him in ODI’s too as he is very handy in the middle overs, as the next white ball worldcup is around the corner. Good ton by @babarazam25 (Babar Azam) too. All the best boys.” he tweeted.

Sarfaraz grabbed the limelight the other day when he scored 86 under pressure and stitched an astounding partnership of 194 runs for the fifth wicket with batting maestro Babar Azam to help Pakistan defy the early collapse on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand.

Courtesy to Babar’s masterclass 161-run knock and Sarafarz’s helping hand, Pakistan finished the opening day on high with a total of 317/5 at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sarfaraz played his last ODI in April 2021 against South Africa in Johannesburg. He scored 50 off 40 in that match, that too as captain of the side.

Overall, he represented Pakistan in 117 ODIS and accumulated 2315 runs at an average of 33.56 with two centuries and 11 fifties to his credit.

Shoaib Malik claims another record achievement in T20 cricket

PALLEKELE: Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik accomplished an incredible feat on Monday when he became the only second batter to complete 12000 runs in T20 cricket.

The all-rounder reached the milestone during the Lanka Premier League match between Jaffna Kings and Colombo Stars. He smashed a blistering 35 from 24 balls to help the Kings go on top over their opponents and surpassed the landmark during the process.

Previously, only West Indian batter Chris Gayle, also called Universe Boss for his aggressive batting style, had this distinction of scoring 12000 T20 runs. However, after playing 485 T20 games, Malik achieved the milestone too.

During his illustrious career, the veteran all-rounder has represented Pakistan in 124 T20 internationals, the most by any Pakistani player. He was part of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup-winning team in 2009 and played a crucial role along with Man of the Match Shahid Afridi in the final against Sri Lanka.

The 40-year-old has also appeared in 35 Tests and 287 ODIs for Pakistan.

‘Pakistan should include Sarfaraz, Shan in Playing XI’ suggests Malik

LAHORE: Pakistan former captain Shoaib Malik has put his weight behind wicket-keeper Sarfaraz Ahmed and opener Shan Masood to be included in the Playing XI for the final Test of the historic three-match series between Pakistan and England.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Shoaib suggested two changes in Pakistan’s batting lineup for the third Test, scheduled to take place in Karachi from December 17 to 21.

“In my opinion, Pakistan should include Sarfaraz Ahmed & Shan Masood in playing 11. Sarfaraz will bring much experience & Shan will help this team to have more stability. I hope our team will perform well in Karachi insha’Allah.” he tweeted.

Malik’s suggestion for changes in the team came at a time when Pakistan faced two consecutive defeats and lost the home series 2-0 against England.

England sealed a dramatic win earlier today as they beat Pakistan by 26 runs in Multan Test on day 4.

Shan, who batted at No 3 for Pakistan in the recently concluded T20 World Cup was Pakistan’s automatic choice to open in the red-ball format before he was sidelined since January 2021, when he played his last Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Sarfaraz, on the other hand, was captain of the side when he played his last Test in January 2019 and has since been unable to find a spot in the Playing XI.

Qasim, Shoaib lift CP in National T20 Cup clash against Northern

MULTAN: Central Punjab (CP) captain Qasim Akram and veteran batter Shoaib Malik led the charge in their final group stage encounter of the ongoing National T20 Cup 2022 against Northern with a fifty each, helping the side finish third in the standings.

Set to chase 163, the fifties from Qasim and Shoaib powered CP to seal a much-needed victory to finish the group stage of the tournament on a high after a dismal start.

The CP were off to a poor start to the run chase as the side lost both openers Faizan Khan and Muhammad Akhlaq at a mere 33 in the fifth over.

Top-order batter Tayyab Tahir, who had a remarkable tournament thus far, kept scoring at a rapid pace but failed short at the cusp of the batting powerplay as he fell to Salman Irshad for 23.

Following the slump, Shoaib and Qasim stood up for their side and put on a match-defining 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The pair appeared solid and were looking confident to steer the CP over the line before Zaman Khan struck in the 18th over to remove Qasim for 58. He faced 37 deliveries in the course of his brilliant knock and smashed eight boundaries.

Right-handed experienced batter Shoaib, on the other hand, remained unbeaten and top-scored for the side with 62 off 39 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and two sixes.

For Northern, Mehran Mumtaz, Sohail Tanvir, Zaman, and Salman made one scalp each.

Batting first, Norther finished at a below-par 162/5 in the allotted 20 overs despite a magnificent knock from the opening batter Nasir Nawaz. He top-scored for the side with 82 off 57 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and four sixes.

Besides Nasir, none of the Northern batters could contribute significantly and the side, as a result, failed to amass a massive score. Skipper Umar Amin chipped in with 31 but remained a touch too slow as he faced 29 deliveries in the proceedings.

For CP, Aamer Yamin led the way with three wickets, while Hunain Shah and Faizan Khan struck out a batter each.
