Mohammed Shami opens up on marriage rumours with Sania Mirza

Right-arm India pacer Mohammed Shami broke silence on the rumours regarding his alleged marriage with national Tennis star Sania Mirza.

Shami appeared at a local YouTube podcast and addressed the speculation about his alleged marriage to tennis star Sania Mirza, labelling the rumours as “unfounded” and “harmful.”

Shami’s response came after manipulated images and social media posts fueled speculation about the alleged union.

“It’s weird and done purposely for some lame fun. But what can be done?” Mohammed Shami said. “If I open my phone, I see those memes. But I would only like to say that I think memes are made for fun, but if they are related to someone’s life, then you must think about it and then share such things.”

Mohammed Shami urged people to be mindful of the impact of their words, stating, “I urge everyone to be responsible with social media and refrain from spreading such unfounded news.”

“If you have the guts to say all these things from a verified page, then I will reply.” Shami said.
Notably, Mirza married Malik from 2010 until it was confirmed in January this year that she had sought separation from her ex-husband through Khula (the right of a Muslim woman to divorce her husband). She shares a son, Izhaan, 5, with the Pakistani cricketer.

On the other hand, Shami has been separated from his wife Hasin Jahan, with whom he got married in 2014. They have a child together.

“You are the much-needed hope for all the women in sports. Super proud of you for all you have achieved in your career,” wrote Shoaib.

“You’re an inspiration for many, keep going strong. Many congratulations on an unbelievable career,” he added.

But she and 42-year-old Bopanna were unable to get over the line, losing 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 to Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos.

Mirza was in tears in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Rohan was my first-ever mixed-doubles partner at (aged) 14 and we won the nationals,” said Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion, three in doubles and three in mixed.

“It was a long time ago, 22 years ago, and I couldn’t think of a better person — he’s one of my best friends and best partners — to finish my career here and to play the final.

“There’s no better place for me, or person for me, to finish my Grand Slam career.”

Mirza, who is married to former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, has a young son Izhaan and said it was incredible to play in front of him in a major final.

“I never thought that I would be able to play in front of my child in a Grand Slam final, so it’s truly special to have my four-year-old and my parents here,” she said.

Mirza, known as a feisty convention-breaker, was the first Indian to win a WTA singles title, in 2005 at her hometown Hyderabad.

She reached the fourth round of the US Open the same year and by 2007 was among the women’s top 30.

But a wrist injury caused her to concentrate on doubles, forging a partnership with Swiss great Martina Hingis which produced three Grand Slam titles.

She is due to retire from all tennis after a tournament next month in Dubai, where she has lived for more than a decade and recently launched a tennis academy.

Indian Tennis star Sania Mirza to retire next month

KARACHI: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has decided to retire after the conclusion of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships next month.

Earlier, Sania had announced that she will bring the curtain down on her professional career after the conclusion of the 2022 season but chose to extend her career because of her elbow injury ahead of the US Open.

“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals, because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before US Open so I had to pull out of everything,” Sania told wtatennis.com.

“And honestly, the person that I am, I like to do things on my own terms. So I don’t want to be forced out by injury. So I’ve been training.

“The plan is to try and retire in Dubai during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Tennis superstar will also be participating in the Australian Open, scheduled this month alongside Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina in Women’s Doubles.

However, in an interview with Curly Tales Middle East, Sania explained the reason why it is the right time for her to retire.

“I’m 36, and honestly my body is beaten, that is the main reason for it,” said Sania.

“And I really don’t have the capacity in my mind to emotionally push that much anymore. I turned pro in 2003. Priorities change, and now my priority is not to push my body to the limit every single day.”
