CSA provides update on Aiden Markram’s fitness ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final

LAHORE: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has provided a major update on the fitness of star batter Aiden Markram ahead of their crucial ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final clash against New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Wednesday.

Markram, who was leading South Africa in the absence of regular skipper Temba Bavuma, experienced hamstring discomfort during the team’s final group-stage match against England on Saturday.

The middle-order batter walked off the field during England’s innings, handing over the leadership duties to wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen.

The development was first confirmed on the broadcast during the 31st over of England’s innings, raising concerns over Markram’s availability for the knockout stage.

As a precautionary measure, CSA called up spin-bowling all-rounder George Linde as a backup option.

However, the latest update brings relief for the Proteas camp as Aiden Markram has passed his fitness test and is available for selection in the high-stakes semi-final against the Black Caps.

South Africa outclass England to march into Champions Trophy semis

KARACHI: South Africa secured a semi-final spot with a convincing seven-wicket victory over England in the 11th match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The Proteas successfully chased a modest target of 180 runs, losing three wickets in 29.3 overs. This victory also allowed South Africa to top Group B, which included Afghanistan, Australia, and England.

South Africa’s new opening pair, Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton, fell inside the power play with a score of 47 courtesy of Jofra Archer bowling.

Stubbs, who was playing his first match in the eight-team tournament, was castled on a duck while Rickelton fell on the score of 27 after hitting five fours.

After early inroads from England, Heinrich Klaasen joined Rassie van der Dussen and forged a 127-run stand. Klaasen departed when his team needed just six runs. His  64 off 56 deliveries featured 11 fours.

On the other hand, Van der Dussen remained firm and carried his team to a comfortable win with an unbeaten 72 off 87 deliveries. His well-crafted innings included half a dozen fours and three sixes.

For England, Archer was the only silver lining, who bagged two wickets, while Adil Rashid picked up one wicket.

Marco Jansen, was awarded Player of the Match for his brilliant bowling and fielding.

The Proteas only needed to ensure they didn’t lose the current match by 207 runs to move forward in the eight-team tournament.

A strong bowling display kept Afghanistan from overtaking them in net run rate. As a result, South Africa and Australia secured the two qualifying spots for the Final Four from Group B.

Earlier, a combined bowling effort helped South Africa bundle England to a meagre 179 in the 11th match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 here at National Bank Stadium on Saturday.

England captain Jos Buttler, in his last match as captain, opted to bat first, however, the decision backfired as Phil Salt (8) fell prey to Marco Jansen in the first over.

Jansen displayed his brilliance with the new ball, removing Jamie Smith (0) and Ben Duckett (24) soon afterward to leave England reeling at 37-3.

Joe Root and Harry Brook (19) then joined hands to construct a 62-run stand for the fourth wicket before Keshav Maharaj broke the partnership.

Root, who top-scored with 37 from 44 balls, fell in the next over, leaving his team in a struggling position with the scoreboard reading 103-5.

South Africa bowlers did not allow England to make a comeback as they took two more wickets in quick succession before Buttler and Jofra Archer forged a crucial 42-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Archer scored a gutsy 25 off 31 with the help of four boundaries, while Buttler managed a scratchy 21 off 43 without any boundary.

South Africa batter hints at retirement after Champions Trophy

South Africa top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen has revealed his plans for retirement after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The right-handed batter, who has been an integral part of the South Africa white-ball squad since 2019, has said that he is open to the possibility of Champions Trophy 2025 becoming his last ICC tournament.

“It’s definitely a possibility that it’s my last ICC tournament. I’m not saying that with any preconceived ideas that I’ll call time on it, or management will call time on my career. It’s just the reality,” van der Dussen said in a recent interview.

His comment came as South Africa prepare for their last group stage match against England at the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.

Rassie van der Dussen believed that the arrival of a new crop of top and middle-order batters might make it challenging for him to retain his spot in the South Africa squad.

“It’s such a great thing that there’s so many young players coming through, guys really playing well,” he remarked.

“A guy like Tristan Stubbs, he’s sitting on the sidelines, or Tony de Zorzi. And even if you go into the domestic structure, Matthew Breetzke came in and made that 150.”

He further highlighted the bench strength of South Africa and the competition for a place in the team.

“I’m not blind to the possibility that if I don’t perform that someone won’t be there to take my place.”

“I certainly don’t expect any preferential treatment because I think in a healthy environment, guys push each other organically and that pushes everyone to be better,” Rassie van der Dussen concluded.

It’s Pertinent to mention that middle order batters Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton are part of South Africa’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad.

Champions Trophy: Rassie van der Dussen gives big statement about India’s Dubai advantage

KARACHI: South Africa top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen made a bold statement about India playing all of their ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 matches at one venue in Dubai.

A few months before the eight-team tournament was set to begin, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided not to send its national men’s team to Pakistan, referencing orders from their government.

The BCCI’s decision to decline sparked a strong response from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), resulting in a lengthy standoff between the two cricketing organizations.

The dispute eventually culminated in the PCB proposing a ‘Fusion Formula’, which states that both teams will play their matches at a neutral venue when India or Pakistan host an event over the next three years.

As a result, India will play all their tournament matches at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

A few days earlier, former England cricketer and commentator Naseer Hussain also raised his voice about Team India’s advantage of playing at one venue.

Now, Van der Dussen has also echoed similar views ahead of their clash against England.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the ability to train and play in one place, coupled with the absence of any inter-city or inter-country travel, gives India an edge that they will be under pressure to fully exploit,” he said.

“It’s definitely an advantage. I saw that Pakistan was commenting about it, but it’s definitely an advantage.”

The Proteas batter further highlighted the benefit of playing in the same stadium and on the same pitches.

“If you can stay in one place, stay in one hotel, practise in the same facilities, play in the same stadium, on the same pitches every time, it’s definitely an advantage,” he observed.

However, the 36-year-old batter emphasized that the Indian team will face pressure due to their one venue advantage.

“In a sense, it puts more pressure on them because whoever is going to play them in the semi or potentially the final is going to go there and the conditions are going to be foreign but they [India] are going to be used to it.”

“The pressure would be on them to get it right because they have all that knowledge,” he concluded.

Champions Trophy: Rickelton’s ton, Rabada’s three-for help South Africa rout Afghanistan

KARACHI: Ryan Rickelton’s century and Kagiso Rabada’s three wickets helped South Africa rout Afghanistan by 107 runs in the third match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 here at National Bank Stadium on Friday.

Chasing a daunting score of 316, Afghanistan’s batting stumbled and were bowled out on 208 in 43.3 overs.

South Africa struck early with the prize wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (10) in the third over, caught off Lungi Ngidi’s bowling.

With the formidable pace bowling attack of Proteas, it was not easy for Afghanistan to bat on a good batting surface of Karachi. Rabada, in the penultimate over of the powerplay, removed the Ibrahim Zadran (17).

After early setbacks, it was expected that there would be some resistance from the Afghanistan middle order; however, the Proteas bowlers further piled on the misery as they removed two more batters on the score of 50 runs.

Sediqullah Atal (16) and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (0) went quickly, leaving the team in a hole.

Rahmat Shah was the only silver lining for Afghanistan, who scored a valiant knock. He formed vital partnerships with the lower order to give some hope to the team.

He and Azmatullah Omarzai put on a 39-run stand for the fifth wicket. Omarzai provided a brief counter-attack, scoring 18 runs with three boundaries before being caught behind with 89 runs on the board.

Rahmat continued to bat sensibly but kept losing partners. Mohammad Nabi (8), Gulbadin Naib (13), and Rashid Khan (18) were all dismissed.

A 39-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Rahmat Shah and Noor Ahmad, 9 off 15 balls, provided some resistance before Ahmad was clean-bowled by Wiaan Mulder. Soon after, Rahmat Shah perished, handing South Africa a 107-run victory.

Rahmat Shah scored 90 off 92 deliveries, hitting nine fours and a six.

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada picked up three wickets for 36 runs, while Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder grabbed two wickets each.

Ryan Rickelton was adjudged Player of the Match for his knock of 103 runs.

Earlier, Rickelton’s century and a quick-fire fifty from Aiden Markram powered South Africa to 315 against Afghanistan.

After opting to bat, the Proteas opener, Tony de Zorzi (11), fell early in the fifth over. He was caught off Mohammad Nabi, who bowled an absolute peach of a delivery.

Following his wicket, the duo of captain Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton added 129 for the second wicket. The former and latter scored half-centuries.

He laid a strong platform for South Africa to accelerate towards the end. However, he was run out on 103 runs in the 35th over. Following his departure, Aiden Markram (52) scored a quick-fire half-century, propelling the team to 315 in 50 overs. Markram hit six fours and one six in his innings.

Nabi was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan, who took two wickets in his ten overs,  while Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai bagged one each.

Champions Trophy: Temba Bavuma issues bold statement ahead of Afghanistan clash

KARACHI: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has made a bold statement ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy opener against Afghanistan, scheduled in Karachi on Friday.

After arriving early in Pakistan for the tri-nation series, South Africa had game time to integrate into the conditions in the series mentioned above.

Addressing the media in a pre-match presser, Bavuma cleared that his team is well-focused and does not carry any past baggage.

“There’s no real negativity or baggage among the guys; we’re coming into this tournament with a lot of positivity and confidence in our ability to go far, said the skipper.

With the tournament format too competitive, Bavuma highlighted the importance of giving every game equal importance.

“Our mindset is to make sure we pitch up and play our best game of cricket. Hopefully, we’re playing five games and not three in this tournament. Most importantly, we need to win the moments that matter,” he remarked.

Spin-heavy Afghanistan, which will start its inaugural campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy, is expected to give Proteas a tough time.

Temba Bavuma admitted to Afghanistan’s competitiveness, recalling their victory over South Africa in Sharjah last year.

“They’re a highly competitive team with a lot of experience and international pedigree. They won’t be short of confidence coming into this game, said Bavuma.

The right-hander batter stated that he had not looked at the pitch but emphasized that Karachi pitches favour the batters.

However, he further emphasized the need for his bowling unit to remain disciplined and precise to counter the high-scoring trend.

“Our challenge as a bowling unit is to be one of the more disciplined and precise bowling units,” Bavuma said.

South Africa will look to start their campaign on a strong note against Afghanistan after a dismal performance in the tri-nation series.
