Klaasen, bowlers aid South Africa thrash holders England

MUMBAI: Heinrich Klaasen’s 61-ball century, followed by a combined bowling effort led South Africa to a thumping 229-run victory over defending champions England in the 20th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase 400, England could only raise 170 before bundling out in 22 overs and thus succumbed to one of the biggest defeats in the history of the World Cups.

The defending champions, after having a dismal start, lost wickets at an alarming rate and were reduced to 84/7 in 15.1 overs.

England further slipped to 100/8 in the next over when bowling all-rounder David Willey fell for a run-a-ball 12.

When it seemed all over for England, their tailenders Mark Wood and Gut Atkinson retaliated with a sensational 70-run partnership before Keshav Maharaj castled the latter to register South Africa’s dominating victory.

Atkinson scored 35 in 21 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries while Mark Wood remained unbeaten with a quickfire 43. His 17-ball knock featured two boundaries and five sixes.

Put into bat first, the South African batters made England Jos Buttler pay as they registered a daunting total on the board with Heinrich Klaasen leading the charge courtesy of a quickfire century at the backend.

The Proteas, however, had a contrasting start as their in-form Quinton de Kock (4) fell on the second delivery of the innings.

Opening batter Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen both scored half-centuries after an early blow as they racked up 121 runs at a brisk pace for the second wicket.

The duo put South Africa in command before both fell victim to Adil Rashid in quick succession as the Proteas slipped to 164/2 in 25.2 overs.

Rassie van der Dussen scored 60 in 61 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries while Hendricks fell shy of his second ODI century, scoring a 75-ball 85, laced up with nine boundaries and three sixes.

Coming out to bat at number five, Heinrich Klaasen joined skipper Aiden Markram and stitched an important 69-run partnership before the latter fell.

South Africa then sustained another blow to their innings as David Miller (5) fell cheaply, causing the side to slip to 243/5 in 36.3 overs.

Following the slump, Heinrich Klaasen launched a counterattack on the English bowlers with a quickfire century and was brilliantly supported by Marco Jansen.

The pair went hard at the bowlers to register a match-defining 151-run partnership off just 76 deliveries before Klaasen finally perished in the final over.

Heinrich Klaasen top-scored with a berserk 109 in 67 balls, smashing 12 boundaries and four sixes.

Meanwhile, Jansen carried his bat all the way through to score an unbeaten 75, conceding just 42 deliveries and smashed three boundaries and six sixes.

Reece Topley picked up three wickets for England while Gut Atkinson and Adil Rashid bagged two each.

Another upset lits ICC World Cup 2023 as Netherlands stun South Africa

DHARAMSALA: South Africa sustained a second upset at the hands of the Netherlands as they fell to a 38-run defeat against the spirited Dutch side in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase 246, the strong South African batting lineup, which racked up the highest World Cup total against Sri Lanka in their campaign opener, bundled out for a paltry 207 in the 43rd over.

Proteas openers Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma started off cautiously with a 36-run partnership, which ended in the eighth over when Colin Ackermann got the former caught behind on 20.

Bavuma (16) soon followed in his footsteps after being castled by Roelof van der Merwe in the 10th over.

South Africa then sustained two more blows to their pursuit as Aiden Markram (1) and Rassie van der Dussen (4) perished cheaply, resulting in the side slipping to 44/4 in the 12th over.

Experienced David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen attempted to anchor the run chase as they added a cautious 45 runs to the total before Logan van Beek dismissed the latter to open the floodgates.

The right-handed batter scored a run-a-ball 28 with the help of four boundaries.

Miller then put together a brief 20-run partnership with Marco Jansen, who could score a 25-ball nine.

He then stitched a gutsy 36-run stand with Gerald Coetzee before both fell in quick succession to leave South Africa reeling at 147/8 in the 34th over.

David Miller remained the top-scorer for South Africa with a cautious 43. His 52-ball knock featured four boundaries and a six. Coetzee, however, could score a 23-ball 22.

Tailender Keshav Maharaj added valuable runs for South Africa at the backend but his 40-run knock was insufficient to avoid the upset defeat.

Logan van Beek led the bowling attack for the Netherlands with three wickets, followed by two each from Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe and Bas de Leede while Ackermann struck out a batter.

Put into bat first, the Netherlands posted a commendable total on the board in the rain-affected match, reduced to 43 overs per side, courtesy of notable contributions from their lower-order batters.

The Dutch got off to a dismal start to their innings as Kagiso Rabada broke the 22-run opening partnership between Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd (2) by getting the former caught at slip.

His opening partner O’Dowd, soon followed him back to the dugout in the next over, falling victim to Marco Jansen. He scored 18 in 25 balls, hitting four boundaries.

The Dutch kept losing wickets at regular intervals and consequently slipped to 140/7 in the 34th over.

With the side in heaps of trouble, captain Scott Edwards was joined by experienced all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe and the pair turned the game on its head.

Edwards and van der Merwe counterattacked South Africa with clean hitting.

The duo added 64 runs for the eighth wicket, conceding just 36 deliveries before van der Merwe was caught behind off Lungi Ngidi in the 40th over.

He played a crucial 29-run cameo, taking only 19 deliveries and smashed three boundaries and a six.

Netherlands’ number 10 Aryan Dutt made sure that his side did not lose momentum and supported Edwards with his quickfire 23. His nine-ball unbeaten knock featured three sixes.

Scott Edwards remained the top-scorer for the Netherlands with 78 not out in 69 deliveries, laced up with 10 boundaries and a six.

A late counterattack by the Dutch side put South Africa under immense pressure, which resulted in several fielding errors and yielded 32 runs.

Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen bagged two wickets each for South Africa while Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj struck out a batter apiece.

Quinton de Kock, bowlers propel South Africa to humble Australia

LUCKNOW: Quinton de Kock scored his second consecutive century before a combined bowling effort led South Africa to thrash Australia by 134 runs in the 10th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Chasing a massive 312-run total, Australia succumbed to their second consecutive defeat in the ongoing mega event after they were bundled out on a paltry 177 in the 41st over.

The five-time champions had a poor start to the pursuit as they lost both their openers Mitchell Marsh (7) and David Warner (13) with just 27 runs on the board.

Marnus Labuschagne joined experienced Steve Smith in the middle and looked to anchor the run chase with a cautious partnership.

The duo, however, could add just 23 runs to the total before Smith perished after being trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada, a decision which caused a debate among cricket fans.

Smith could score 19 off 16 deliveries before walking back to the pavilion in disbelief.

Australia then lost three more wickets in quick succession to further slip to 70/6 in the 17th over.

Following the slump, Labucshagne put on a fighting seventh-wicket partnership with Mitchell Starc and added 74 runs to the total.

The duo frustrated the ruthless South African bowling attack before Marco Jansen drew a much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Starc, who scored a gutsy 51-ball 27.

Marnus Labuschagne soon followed Starc back into the dugout in the next over.

He remained the top-scorer for Australia with 46 in 74 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.

Australian captain Pat Cummins scored a 21-ball 22 at the backend but could not save his side from succumbing to a massive defeat.

Kagiso Rabada led the bowling attack for South Africa with 3/33, followed by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Tabraiz Shamsi, who picked two each.

De Kock carried the momentum from South Africa’s crushing 102-run victory over Sri Lanka in their ICC World Cup 2023 opener, where he scored an 84-ball century.

After being put into bat by Australia, De Kock raised his half-century in 51 balls, while his opening partner Temba Bavuma (35) played an anchoring innings on the other end.

Together they put up a 108-run opening stand, which was broken by Glenn Maxwell when Bavuma in an attempt to shift gears caught by David Warner at deep mid-wicket.

Rassie van der Dussen joined de Kock and added 50 runs for the second wicket before Zampa got him out at a total of 158 in the 29th over.

De Kock on the other end continued to bat fluently and reached his 19th ODI hundred in 90 balls, but Maxwell struck again and bowled the left-hander on 109. His 106-ball knock featured eight boundaries and five sixes.

Following de Kock’s departure, Aiden Markram took control and added 60 runs with Heinrich Klaasen for the fourth wicket, completing his half-century in the process.

He was dismissed by Pat Cummins after scoring 44-ball 56, featuring seven boundaries and one six.

Klaasen could only manage 29 off 27 before Marco Jansen propelled the South African total to 311 with a 22-ball cameo of 26 runs.

Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc picked two wickets each, while Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa managed to take one apiece.

Markram, South Africa smash World Cup records with Sri Lanka thrashing

DELHI: Right-handed middle-order batter Aiden Markram and South Africa smashed several records as they wreaked havoc with the bat against Sri Lanka in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Saturday.

Aiden Markram scored the fastest World Cup century in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India on Saturday.

The right-handed batter put on a blistering display and smashed the record in 49 balls.

He finished at a 54-ball 106 which featured 14 boundaries and three sixes.

The previous record was held by former Ireland cricketer Kevin O’Brien. He scored his century in 50 balls against Ireland in the group stage fixture in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

South Africa went on to score the highest team total in a World Cup game as they scored 428/5 in their 50 overs as Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie van der Dussen baton-charged Sri Lankan bowlers.

The trio scored sublime centuries, the first such instance in a World Cup game that three batters from a team got to the triple-figures.

Notably in ODIs, South Africa had imitated the feat twice – against West Indies in Johannesburg and India in Mumbai while England had three centurions when they scored a record 498 against the Netherlands in June 2022.

For the unversed, South Africa’s 428/5 against Sri Lanka was their eighth 400-plus total in ODIs — the most by any team — three of which came at the World Cup while the rest of the teams have two 400-plus scores in total.

Moreover, South Africa’s 428/5 was also the highest total scored against Sri Lanka, surpassing India’s 414 for 7 in 2009 in Rajkot.

Dominant South Africa humble Sri Lanka to kick start World Cup campaign

DELHI: A combined bowling effort after a batting onslaught propelled South Africa to hand a 102-run thrashing to Sri Lanka in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Saturday.

Chasing a daunting total of 429, Sri Lanka offered notable fightback as they scored 326 runs all out in response.

Wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis scripted Sri Lanka’s flying start to the pursuit despite an early blow in the form of Pathum Nissanka, who fell for a seven-ball duck.

Mendis knitted a one-sided 66-run partnership with Kusal Perera, who could contribute a mere seven before falling in the eighth over.

Mendis’ early fireworks were shortlived after Perera’s departure as he headed back to the pavilion in the 13th over after providing Sri Lanka with a perfect start with a blistering half-century.

He scored 76 in just 42 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and eight sixes.

Charith Asalanka then took the reigns of Sri Lanka’s run chase with a brisk knock and was also involved in a crucial 82-run partnership with captain Dasun Shanaka before finally perishing in the 32nd over.

He top-scored for the Asian side with a 65-ball 79, peppered with eight boundaries and four sixes.

Later, it was captain Shanaka, who kept hopes of pulling off a miraculous run chase alive with his sensational half-century but his efforts eventually turned out to be insufficient as Sri Lanka fell well short of it despite handy contributions from their tailenders.

Shanaka remained a notable run-getter for his side with 68. His 62-ball knock included six boundaries and three sixes.

Gerald Coetzee led the bowling attack for South Africa with 3/68 in his nine overs while Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen bagged two each.

Put into bat first, South Africa caused carnage at Arun Jaitley Stadium here as they racked up a mammoth 428/5 against Sri Lanka — the highest team total in a World Cup game.

The Proteas had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost their captain Temba Bavuma (8) in the second over with just 10 runs on the board.

Following the early slump, Rassie van der Dussen joined Quinton de Kock at the crease to launch an astounding recovery.

The pair batted sensibly and kept the scoreboard ticking amid their marathon 204-run partnership with both scoring centuries.

The second-wicket partnership pushed Sri Lanka to the backfoot before Matheesha Pathirana finally struck for the Islanders by dismissing de Kock in the 31st over.

The left-handed opener scored 100 off 84 balls with the help of 12 boundaries and three sixes.

Coming out to bat at number four, Aiden Markram turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting and took the reigns of South Africa’s innings.

He put on a brief 50-run partnership with van der Dussen, who perished after top-scoring for South Africa with a 110-ball 108 which featured 13 boundaries and two sixes.

Watch ICC World Cup 2023 Live on ARY ZAP

Markram was then involved in yet another crunch partnership for South Africa when he put together a 78-run stand with Heinrich Klaassen, who played a quickfire 32-run cameo in just 20 balls.

The right-handed batter converted his dominant knock into the fastest World Cup century — a record previously held by Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien (50 balls) — as he reached the milestone in just 49 balls.

His sensational knock finally came to an end in the 48th over when South Africa were still 17 short of the 400-run mark. He smashed 106 in a mere 54 balls, laced up with 14 boundaries and three sixes.

Hard-hitting batter David Miller, with a little support from Marco Jansen’s seven-ball 12, bolstered South Africa’s total in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener with a quickfire 39 in 21 balls which included three boundaries and two sixes.

Dilshan Madushanka bagged two wickets while Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage picked one apiece for Sri Lanka, who had a game to forget with the ball.

Quinton de Kock’s 84* in vain as New Zealand edge South Africa in warm-up fixture

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 84-run knock went in vain as New Zealand edged South Africa by seven runs on DLS in the ICC World Cup 2023 warm-up match.

Chasing 322, South Africa were 211/4 in 37 overs when rain intervened with de Kock (84*) and David Miller (18*) at the crease.

The downpour here did not relent and thus did not allow further action and the Proteas were found seven runs short on the DLS method.

Quinton de Kock top-scored for South Africa with an unbeaten 89 in 84 balls, hitting 12 boundaries and a six.

Heinrich Klaassen was the other notable run-getter for South Africa, scoring a 37-ball 39.

Trent Boult was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand with 2/20 while Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner made one scalp each.

New Zealand’s batting lineup justified their captain Kane Williamson’s decision to bat first as they racked up a massive total on the board, thanks to a combined effort.

New Zealand, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost their first wicket with just 24 runs on the board as Will Young perished for a 17-ball 12.

Following the early blow, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson joined Conway in the middle and stabilized the proceedings for his side.

The pair added 89 runs to the total before the Kiwi captain Williamson opted to walk back after scoring 37 in 51 balls, hitting three boundaries.

Devon Conway was then joined by wicketkeeper batter Tom Latham and the pair put on a brief 46-run partnership before the former returned to the dugout.

Conway remained the top-scorer for New Zealand with a 73-ball 78 which featured 11 boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, Latham and Glenn Phillips spearheaded New Zealand’s expedition with the bat.

The pair added an 83-run partnership before both perished in the 40th over, bowled by Marco Jansen.

Latham scored 52 off 56 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and a six while Phillips played a 43-run knock in 40 balls, laced up with as many boundaries.

New Zealand middle-order, comprised of Mark Chapman (20), James Neesham (14), Daryl Mitchell (25) and Mitchell Santner (16) then added vital runs at the backend and propelled their side to post a decent total on the board.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen bagged three wickets each while the rest went wicketless.
