India yet to decide on captain Shubman Gill after neck injury

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday provided an update on the injury of captain Shubman Gill ahead of the second Test against South Africa, starting 22 November in Guwahati.

Gill has responded well to treatment for a neck injury, the BCCI said on Wednesday; however, it remains to be seen if he will participate in the second Test.

Gill suffered the injury on the second day of the first Test in Kolkata and spent one night in the hospital.

He retired hurt on four and did not return to resume his innings and nor did he field, with vice-captain Rishabh Pant leading the hosts for the remainder of the first Test, which South Africa won by 30 runs.

“Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025,” the BCCI said in a statement ahead of the second Test.

“He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly.”

Harmer stars as South Africa stun India in low-scoring Test

Spinner Simon Harmer claimed a match haul of eight wickets to lead South Africa to a thrilling 30-run win over India inside three days of a low-scoring opening Test on Sunday.

India, without captain and leading batter Shubman Gill, who was ruled out because of a neck injury he suffered on Saturday, faltered in their chase of 124 to be bowled out for 93 in Kolkata.

Harmer, who had figures of 4-30 in the first Indian innings, struck key blows in the second session, including getting Rishabh Pant caught and bowled for two to dent the opposition chase.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj struck twice in two balls to pack off India and trigger wild celebrations in the South African camp, with the reigning world Test champions taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma hit a defiant 55 not out to lift his team’s second innings total to 153 after they slipped to 91-7 on day two.

“Very exciting, you want to be a part of those types of games and obviously be on the right side of the result,” Bavuma said.

“I think we tried to hold our ground as much as we could. We knew it was going to be tough with the bat; it was tough for us, but we needed to exploit what was there.”

South Africa, who beat Australia in the World Test Championship final in June at Lord’s, have lived up to their winners’ tag with a recent 1-1 draw in Pakistan and now beating India at their own game of spin.

Washington Sundar attempted to anchor India’s chase but fell to Aiden Markram’s off-spin for 31.

Axar Patel gave the crowd some cheer with his two sixes off Maharaj before the bowler had his revenge to send the batter caught out for 26 off 17 balls.

Left-arm quick Marco Jansen ripped out the Indian openers before lunch with the hosts effectively 10-3 in the absence of Gill, who is in hospital and “under observation”, at the break, and Harmer soon took charge and returned figures of 4-21.

Wickets fell in clusters as Harmer, who was named player of the match, kept up the charge to send back Dhruv Jurel, Pan,t and Ravindra Jadeja in quick succession.

“A game like this, you can’t dwell into it too much,” said vice-captain Pant, who took charge of the team after Gill was forced out.

“We should’ve been able to chase this score. The pressure built on us in the second innings, and we weren’t able to capitalise.”

Earlier, Bavuma played a defiant knock to keep South Africa in the hunt after they resumed on 93-7 on a tough pitch with inconsistent bounce.

He started the day on 29 and played with grit to complete the first half-century of a low-scoring contest.

Bavuma’s 44-run eighth-wicket stand with overnight partner Corbin Bosch frustrated the Indian bowlers until pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah broke through.

Bumrah bowled Bosch for 25 before Bavuma reached his fifty in 122 balls, raising his bat to an applauding dressing room.

Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj shattered Harmer’s stumps for seven and removed last man Maharaj for a duck in the space of four balls as Bavuma ran out of partners.

South Africa fought back on day two after being all out for 159 on Friday, after winning the toss and electing to bat.

They dismissed India for 189 on Saturday to keep the deficit to 30 before again faltering in their batting.

The second Test starts Saturday in Guwahati.

Bumrah claims five as India seize advantage in first South Africa Test

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah claimed a five-wicket haul as India bowled out South Africa for 159 on the opening day of the first cricket Test on Friday.

Electing to bat in Kolkata at the start of the two-match series, reigning world Test champions South Africa lost regular wickets and were bowled out in 55 overs.

In reply, India were 37-1 at stumps, trailing South Africa by 122 runs on a pitch that looked good for batting.

Left-arm quick Marco Jansen removed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12 when the left-handed opener chopped a delivery onto his stumps.

With the red ball in use, even with the floodlights on, it grew so dark that play was halted early at the iconic Eden Gardens. KL Rahul was on 13, and left-handed Washington Sundar was on six.

The visitors had suffered a setback even before a ball was bowled when their premier fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, was ruled out with a rib injury.

Rabada is under observation after he sustained the injury in the team’s first training session on Tuesday and failed a fitness test on the morning of the opener.

Bumrah, who took his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, struck twice in the third over after tea.

After a 57-run stand between openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, South Africa faltered against the Indian attack.

Kuldeep Yadav — one of the four spinners in the Indian XI — and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each.

Opening batter Markram took 23 deliveries to get off the mark, but did so with a glorious straight drive for four off Siraj.

Spin was introduced in the eighth over with Axar Patel bowling his left-arm orthodox, but Markram kept up the attack.

Bumrah (5-27) broke the opening stand when he bowled left-hander Rickelton for 23 to raise the noise of a crowd of around 36,000.

Bumrah then produced a gem to send back Markram, caught behind for 31 on a rising ball that hit the glove, and returning wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant completed a diving catch.

Kuldeep kept up the bowling charge and had skipper Temba Bavuma caught at leg slip for three.

Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi — who both scored 24 — took the team past 100 and into lunch before Kuldeep trapped Mulder lbw with the batter attempting a reverse sweep off the left-arm wrist spinner.

Bumrah ended de Zorzi’s defiance l,bw and the batter, like Mulder, wasted a review. Both showed the ball hitting the stumps.

Wickets kept tumbling as Siraj picked two in the space of four balls, with Kyle Verreynne lbw for 16 and Jansen bowled for a duck.

Hong Kong Sixes 2025: Pakistan thrash South Africa to reach semi-finals

MONG KOK: Pakistan booked their spot in the semifinals of the Hong Kong Sixes 2025 with a dominant display against South Africa, chasing down a challenging target of 103 runs in just 3.5 overs at Mission Road Ground on Saturday.

In a thrilling high-scoring affair, Abdul Samad stole the show with a jaw-dropping 50 off just 10 balls, smashing eight sixes to dismantle South Africa’s bowling attack.

Supporting him at the other end, Khawaja Nafay played a blistering hand of 36 off 13 deliveries, including four towering sixes and two boundaries.

Captain Abbas Afridi finished the chase in style, hammering 12 runs off the only two balls he faced to seal a five-wicket victory for Pakistan.

Earlier, Pakistan’s bowlers set the tone as Muhammad Shahzad produced a sensational over, grabbing three wickets for just 11 runs to restrict South Africa to a below-par total of 102.

With this emphatic win, Pakistan advanced to the semifinals, where they will face Australia in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

The Abbas Afridi-led side has looked in commanding form throughout the tournament, with their only defeat coming in a rain-affected clash against India.

Ironically, India did not qualify for the knockout stage after suffering a surprising defeat to Kuwait.

South Africa name THIS batter as Dewald Brevis’ replacement in ODI squad

FAISALABAD: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that left-handed batter Rubin Hermann has been drafted in as a replacement for the injured Dewald Brevis for the remaining ODI matches against Pakistan.

Hermann, 28, brings impressive List A credentials to the squad, 1,699 runs in 41 matches at an average of nearly 50, including six centuries and as many fifties.

The left-hander has also represented South Africa in six T20Is but has yet to make his ODI debut.

“North West Dragons batter Rubin Hermann has been named as Dewald Brevis’ replacement for the remainder of the One-Day International series against Pakistan,” CSA said in an official statement on Wednesday.

Brevis, nicknamed ‘Baby AB’ for his stroke-making similarities to AB de Villiers, sustained a shoulder muscle strain during the third T20I against Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore last week.

Scans later confirmed a low-grade injury, ruling him out of the 50-over leg of the tour.

Shafali, Deepti lead India to Women’s World Cup glory

NAVI MUMBAI: Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance helped India beat South Africa and seal the maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title.

Set a stiff 299, South Africa crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs.

Tazmin Brits and skipper Laura Wolvaardt started strong with a half-century partnership that culminated with the former’s wicket, courtesy of a brilliant direct hit from Amanjot Kaur.

She made 23 from 35 with the help of two fours and a six.

India took another wicket in a short span, removing Anneke Bosch for a duck, which put them on top. However, it was Wolvaardt, who stood in their way, forging a string of partnerships with the middle-order batters that kept South Africa’s scorecard ticking.

She added 52 with Sune Luus and Annerie Dercksen that kept them alive in the contest. But, Shafali Verma had another plans as she picked two crucial wickets of Luss and Kapp, which left the Proteas reeling.

Despite the wickets tumbing around her, Wolvaardt stood firm and notched up a century.

However, once she fell after scoring 101 from 98, laced with 11 fours and a six, South Africa’s innings derailed from 220-7 to 246 all-out and eventually India a historic victory.

The star of bowling was Deepti Sharma, who picked up a five-wicket haul in 9.3 overs.

Earlier, Shafali Verma set the tone with 87 from 78 before Deepti Sharma’s brisk half-century and Richa Ghosh’s cameo propelled India to a strong total.

Put into bat first after a two-hour rain delay, India piled up 298-7 in their 50 overs.

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma forged a century stand for the opening wicket, adding 104 in 17.4 overs. Both batters capitalized on the lightning-fast outfield and accelerated the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries.

The Proteas got a sigh of relief when Smriti Mandhana was caught behind off.
Chloe Tryon’s bowling. She made 45 off 58 balls, studded with eight boundaries.

Meanwhile, Verma continued on and reached her half-century on 49 balls. Despite the wicket, South Africa could not stem the scoring rate as previous match centurion Jemima Rodrigues and Verma paired up for a 62-run stand.

The duo brought the team’s total to 166 in 27.5 overs. At this moment, the hosts were cruising; however, they were jolted by the prized wicket of Shafali Verma, who missed out on her century. She struck seven fours and two sixes in her knock.

The highlight of the Indian innings was the partnership despite South Africa making a strong comeback in the second half of the innings. Jemimah Rodrigues followed Verma after making 24 from 37 balls.

Consequently, India were 171-3 in 29.4 overs. South Africa did well to restrict India under 300 with wickets in the 30th to 40th overs.

Yet, Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh ensured that their side did not lose plot, adding a 47 from just 35 for the sixth wicket partnership.

Sharma was run out on the final ball of the innings, scoring runs in a ball 58 with the help of a six and three boundaries, while Gosh scored 34 from 24, including three fours and two sixes.

For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka remained the pick of the bowling, bagging three wickets in her nine overs.

Explained: Why second India-South Africa Test will have Tea before Lunch?

The upcoming second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati is reportedly set to feature a tea interval before the lunch break.

The Test, starting November 22 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, will not only mark the venue’s debut as India’s newest Test ground but will also see the tea interval preceding the lunch break.

This unusual arrangement stems from Guwahati’s geographical location on India’s eastern edge, where daylight fades much earlier than in the western parts of the country.

Since India follows a single time zone, the early sunset has forced match officials to tweak the playing hours.

As a result, the day’s play will begin at 9:00 AM local time and end by 4:00 PM, with sessions divided as follows:

  • First session: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
  • Second session: 11:20 AM – 1:20 PM
  • Final session: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM (extendable till 4:30 PM if needed)

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

Unlike the usual order of lunch followed by tea, the Guwahati Test will have a 20-minute tea interval first, followed by a 40-minute lunch break, a first in international cricket.

Interestingly, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Test Match Playing Conditions do not prohibit the reversal.

Section 11.2.1 only specifies the duration of the two intervals, 40 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes for tea, and allows flexibility in timing with mutual agreement between boards and ICC approval.

There’s no clause mandating that lunch must precede tea.

ICC announces match officials for Women’s World Cup final

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed the match officials for the final of the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

The summit clash will be played between hosts India and South Africa on Sunday at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Australia’s Eloise Sheridan and West Indies’ Jacquline Williams will take the responsibilities for on-field umpiring, while Sue Redfern will serve as the Third Umpire.

Both officials have had an active role throughout the group stage, including the semi-final between England and South Africa.

Sheridan also oversaw England’s commanding 10-wicket win over South Africa as well as the Proteas’ victory against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Williams stood in South Africa’s triumphs against India and Bangladesh and England’s mixed outings against India and Australia.

The Fourth Umpire will be Nimali Perera, and Michelle Pereira will occupy the role of the Match Referee.

For context, both teams will be eyeing their maiden title, a feat they have never achieved in the tournament’s 52-year history.

South Africa have demonstrated outstanding performances throughout the tournament and finished in second spot on the points table. The Proteas women also toppled four-time champions England in the semi-final with a statement win.

On the contrary, India had a topsy-turvy campaign, finishing in fourth position on the table. However, they bounced back in the later part of the tournament. They clinched a memorable win over the seven-time champions, Australia, in the second semi-final of the marquee event.
