Pakistan pacer announces retirement from international cricket

LAHORE: Pakistan’s left-arm fast bowler Usman Shinwari announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old fast bowler has represented Pakistan in one Test match, 17 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 16 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) from 2013 to 2019.

Usman Shinwari made his international debut in a T20I against Sri Lanka in Dubai in December 2013, where he conceded nine runs without taking a wicket in his only over.

He played three more T20Is before making his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Sharjah in October 2017.

His sole Test appearance came in December 2019, also against Sri Lanka, in Rawalpindi, marking the last time he played for Pakistan.

He was also part of the Pakistan squad for the ACC Men’s ODI Asia Cup in 2018.

Throughout his six-year career, Shinwari took one wicket in Tests, accounted for 34 ODI wickets in ODIs, and claimed 13 wickets in T20Is.

His best bowling performances include two five-wicket hauls in ODIs against Sri Lanka.

He claimed 5 wickets for 34 runs in 2017 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium and 5 wickets for 51 runs in 2019 at National Bank Stadium in Karachi.

Pakistan pacer comes out in support of Fakhar Zaman

Left-arm Pakistan pacer Usman Khan Shinwari threw his weight behind opening batter Fakhar Zaman after his exclusion from Pakistan squads and central contracts.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the central contracts for the 2024-25 international season, along with the squads for the tours to Australia and Zimbabwe.

However, Fakhar’s name was missing from the central contract list and squads for the upcoming tours.

The decision to exclude Fakhar Zaman did not sit well with Usman Khan Shinwari, who expressed his backing for the left-handed batter.

“I will prefer one day of Fakhar Zaman’s life Rather than 60 years of those who were choosing their sides according to situations,” wrote Shinwari on X, formerly Twitter.

Meanwhile, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, during a press conference where he announced handing white ball captaincy to Rizwan, addressed Fakhar’s exclusion from the central contracts list.

“There is the tweet issue definitely. But that doesn’t matter as much as his fitness tests. He had two issues: the fitness test and the show-cause notice, which is still pending. That is why he hasn’t been included (in the central contracts list),” Naqvi said.

It is worth mentioning here that the left-handed batter has questioned the PCB’s decision to exclude Babar Azam from the squad for the last two Tests of the recently concluded England series.

In a post on X, Zaman had said that dropping Babar Azam would send a negative message to the team, as he emphasised the need to safeguard key players rather than undermine them.

The PCB chief in his press conference reiterated the importance of discipline within the team while acknowledging Fakhar Zaman’s input during the previous connection camp.

“Fakhar spoke well in the connection camp, and because of that, we’ve fixed a lot of things and are doing more in the international department. I appreciate him for that, but this can’t happen if a player gets dropped by the selection committee then another player starts doing tweets against it. This isn’t allowed and won’t be allowed. But the bigger issue is his fitness test,” Naqvi said.

Usman Shinwari picks Sarfaraz Ahmed as his “favourite” captain

KARACHI: Former Pakistan Test pacer Usman Shinwari picked wicketkeeper batter Sarfaraz Ahmed as his favourite captain.

Shinwari, in an interview with Youtuber Nadir Ali, was asked to name his favourite captain and the lanky pacer was quick to name wicketkeeper batter Sarfaraz.

“I played international cricket under Sarfaraz’s captaincy mostly and played two to three PSL matches with Babar. But my favourite is Sarfaraz,” said Shinwari.

“Sarfaraz is a wonderful person. During his captaincy, he used to get very angry at times but after the match, he would apologize,” he added.

Usman Shinwari then revealed one thing he would want to adjust in Sarfaraz Ahmed’s style of captaincy.

“If I had to make one adjustment to his captaincy, it would be that whatever he says in the heat of the moment, should not say it on the ground but after the match,” advised Shinwari.

“But that is the only thing while 99 percent of things he does are perfect,” he maintained.

Shinwari further opined that Sarfaraz Ahmed compromised his batting career while leading the national side.

“I think he ruined his batting career in captaincy. He remained captain for four years and was ousted because of this,” shared Shinwari.

“He sometimes batted at number six, sometimes at number seven which means he did not make himself strong. He was a captain, he could have batted up the order, make runs and solidify his position.

“But in those four years, he batted much lesser and compromised his batting career for the sake of the team.”

It is worth mentioning here that Sarfaraz Ahmed is considered one of the most successful Pakistan captains, having won two ICC titles – Champions Trophy and U19 World Cup – and leading his side to 11 consecutive T20I series victories.

Before Usman Shinwari, top pacers Umar Gul and Wahab Riaz and renowned Pakistan-based umpire Aleem Dar termed wicketkeeper batter as their favourite captain.
