LAHORE: Fakhar Zaman delivered a record-equalling performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11 clash against Quetta Gladiators, smashing a breathtaking century to guide Lahore Qalandars to a commanding total at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

The left-handed opener blazed his way to 103 in just 51 deliveries, registering his third century in the league and drawing level with Babar Azam for the most centuries in PSL history.

With this milestone, Fakhar joins an elite group of batters, including Babar, Usman Khan, Kamran Akmal and Rilee Rossouw, who have each scored three centuries in the tournament.

Notably, Babar Azam scored his third century to reach the landmark on Sunday, also against the Gladiators.

PSL 11: Fakhar Zaman stars as Lahore Qalandars edge Quetta Gladiators

LAHORE: Fakhar Zaman’s sublime century powered Lahore Qalandars to a victory over Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 clash at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a stiff 199, Gladiaotrs fell short by nine runs, ending their innings on 188 for seven in 20 overs.

The chase started with a 49-run partnership between Saud Shakeel and Shamyl Hussain. The latter capitalized on the power play, bringing the team’s score to 49 in 5.4 overs before Sikandar Raza removed Saud. He was caught after scoring 17.

The wicket brought seasoned batter Rilee Rossouw to the fore, who counterattacked alongside Shamyl to keep the Gladiators in the hunt. Shamyl batted beautifully and notched his third half-century of the season.

However, he was back to the pavilion, courtesy of a run out in the ninth over of the innings. The soutpaw made 53 off 31, including three sixes and five fours.

Lahore were back in the game as Haris Rauf removed Hassan Nawaz for a duck in the same over, leaving Gladiators 88-3 in 9.5 overs. Despite the wickets, Rossouw continued to attack, keeping the required run rate in control.

He was joined by Khawaja Nafay (12) as Rossouw stitched a 40-run partnership with the South African batter doing the bulk of the scoring.

Quetta Gladiators were in control until Rilee Rossouw’s dismissal on the ball of the 14th over. The left-hander had accumulated 21 runs from Ubaid Shah’s over before getting caught. He remained top-scorer, striking five sixes and five fours in his 62 from just 29 balls.

His wicket sealed the deal for the defending champions as Abrar Ahmed remained unbeaten on 24 from 14, which reduced the margin of defeat for Gladiators.

For Lahore Qalandars, Haris Rauf took two wickets in his quota of four overs.

With this loss, the chances of Quetta Gladiators are now slim as they now sit on six points with only one game left.

Earlier, Fakhar Zaman smashed a blistering century to propel Lahore Qalandars to an imposing 197-6 against Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 clash at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

The left-handed opener dominated proceedings with a blistering 103 off 51 deliveries, marking his third century in the league and laying the foundation for Qalandars’ massive total.

Qalandars endured an early setback when Mohammad Farooq departed for just four in the second over. Fakhar, however, quickly took control and stitched a 57-run stand with Abdullah Shafique, contributing the bulk of the runs before Shafique was dismissed for 14 by Abrar Ahmed.

Fakhar then found an able partner in Charith Asalanka as the duo added 96 runs for the third wicket. The aggressive opener continued to dictate terms, reaching his century during the partnership while keeping the Gladiators’ bowlers under constant pressure.

The stand was eventually broken by Brett Hampton, who removed Asalanka for 31 off 24 balls, leaving the score at 160-3 in 15.3 overs.

Fakhar’s innings soon ended in the following over, but not before he had struck 11 fours and six sixes in a match-defining knock.

Late contribution from Daniel Sams, who remained unbeaten on 18 off 12 deliveries, ensured Qalandars finished strongly at 197-6 in their allotted 20 overs.

For the Gladiators, Khalil Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Abrar Ahmed, Hampton and Usman Tariq chipped in with one apiece.

WATCH: Fakhar Zaman responds to Mohsin Naqvi’s birthday wish

Opening batter Fakhar Zaman has thanked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi for his heartfelt birthday wish.

Earlier today, Mohsin Naqvi sent Fakhar a bouquet with a heartfelt note.

“Warmest Happy Birthday Fakhar Zaman from PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi”, the note on the bouquet read.

The left-hander who turned 36 today has represented Pakistan in three Tests, 92 ODIs, and 120 T20Is.

“Thank you very much, Chairman [Mr Mohsin Naqvi], for such a wonderful gesture. Your kind birthday wishes and the beautiful flowers truly meant a lot. Grateful for your warmth and thoughtfulness,” Fakhar said in a video message.

For the unversed, Fakhar was penalised by the PCB after being found guilty of a Level 3 breach of the tournament’s Code of Conduct, relating to ball-tampering during Lahore Qalandars’ clash against Karachi Kings at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The left-handed batter had denied the charge and opted for a full disciplinary hearing, which was conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama. Following a review of the evidence and Fakhar’s defence, the referee imposed a two-match suspension, the maximum penalty for a first Level 3 offence.

In response, Fakhar Zaman lodged a formal appeal, seeking a reassessment of the decision.

The matter was then revisited by the PSL Technical Committee, which conducted a fresh review before arriving at the same conclusion. The board confirmed that the original sanction would stand.

Following this, Fakhar missed Lahore Qalandars’ upcoming fixtures, including their match against Multan Sultans on April 3 at Gaddafi Stadium, followed by an away game against Islamabad United on April 9.

Fakhar Zaman will return to action for Lahore Qalandars against Peshawar Zalmi here at the National Bank Stadium on Saturday.

Fakhar Zaman opens up on T20I retirement plan

Lahore Qalandars opener Fakhar Zaman has dismissed ongoing speculation surrounding his future in T20 International cricket, confirming that he has no immediate plans to retire from the format.

The left-handed batter, who has been a consistent performer for both Pakistan and in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), clarified that while he had briefly considered stepping away after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, he ultimately decided against it.

“After the World Cup, I had decided to retire from T20 cricket. However, I no longer intend to retire and want to finish my T20 career on a high note,” Fakhar stated, putting an end to speculation about his future.

Fakhar remains one of Pakistan’s most experienced batters in the shorter format, having featured in 120 T20I matches and scoring 2,494 runs at a strike rate of 132.51, including 14 half-centuries.

At the franchise level, he has been equally influential for Lahore Qalandars, where he has represented the side for 11 consecutive seasons.

In 99 PSL appearances, he has accumulated 3,018 runs at a strike rate of 141.82, including 24 fifties and two centuries, cementing his status as one of the league’s most dependable openers.

However, his campaign has recently been disrupted, as Fakhar is currently serving a two-match suspension after being found guilty of ball tampering during a PSL 11 clash against Karachi Kings last week.

Fakhar Zaman challenges ban over ball-tampering allegation: sources

LAHORE: Fakhar Zaman has reportedly lodged an appeal against his two-match suspension in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 over ball-tampering charges, sources confirmed on Wednesday.

The Lahore Qalandars opener was handed the ban earlier this week by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after being found guilty of a Level 3 breach of the tournament’s Code of Conduct during their clash against Karachi Kings.

The controversy stems from an incident in the final stages of the match, where on-field umpires imposed a five-run penalty on Lahore Qalandars and ordered a ball change ahead of the last over of Karachi’s innings, a decision that proved decisive in the outcome of the contest.

Following the match, Fakhar was charged under Article 2.14 of the Code, which pertains to altering the condition of the ball in violation of the league’s playing conditions.

The charge was brought forward by umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Aafreedi, along with TV umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Tariq Rasheed.

The left-handed batter denied the allegations and opted for a full disciplinary hearing, which was conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama.

After reviewing the evidence and hearing the player’s defence, the referee upheld the charge and imposed the maximum penalty for a first Level 3 offence, a two-match suspension.

According to sources, Fakhar Zaman has now formally challenged the decision by submitting an appeal to the PSL Technical Committee, seeking a review of the sanction.

PSL 11: Fakhar Zaman handed two-match ban over ball-tampering

LAHORE: Defending champions Lahore Qalandars have been dealt a significant blow after opener Fakhar Zaman was suspended for two matches in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 following a Level 3 breach of the tournament’s Code of Conduct.

The decision was confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday after an incident during Lahore’s high-intensity clash against Karachi Kings at the Gaddafi Stadium.

According to the PCB, Fakhar was found guilty of violating Article 2.14, which relates to altering the condition of the ball in breach of the league’s playing conditions. The offence occurred in the closing stages of the match, shortly before the final over of Karachi’s run chase.

During that moment, the on-field umpires inspected the ball, ruled that its condition had been changed, and imposed a five-run penalty on Lahore Qalandars, in addition to replacing the ball, a decision that proved crucial in Karachi’s narrow victory.

The charge was brought forward by umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Aafreedi, along with TV umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Tariq Rasheed.

Fakhar Zaman denied the ball-tampering allegation and opted for a full disciplinary hearing.

Match referee Roshan Mahanama conducted the proceedings, reviewing the evidence and granting the player a personal hearing before reaching a final verdict. Lahore captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, team director Sameen Rana and manager Farooq Anwar were also present during the hearing.

Under PSL regulations, a Level 3 offence carries a minimum penalty of a one-match ban and can extend up to two matches, with Fakhar receiving the maximum sanction.

The suspension means Fakhar will miss Lahore’s upcoming fixtures, including their clash against Multan Sultans on April 3 at Gaddafi Stadium and the subsequent encounter against Islamabad United on April 9 in Karachi.

Fakhar Zaman addresses fitness concerns after National T20 Cup participation

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has addressed the fitness concerns that sparked a public debate over his omission from the national side’s recent ODI series against Bangladesh.

The left-handed batter found himself at the centre of controversy after Pakistan’s selection committee, represented by Aaqib Javed, cited fitness issues as the reason behind his exclusion.

The matter gained traction when former pacer Abdur Rouf questioned the decision publicly, after Fakhar participated in the ongoing National T20 Cup.

Fakhar Zaman, while playing for Abbottabad Region, took a brilliant diving catch against Lahore Whites at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Rouf had taken to social media to criticise the selectors, highlighting what he perceived as a contradiction between Fakhar being declared unfit and his on-field participation.

“A day ago, our selection committee declared him injured and demanded an inquiry. What a great mind and visionary people we have to run our cricket,” Rouf wrote with the picture of Fakhar’s diving catch.

Responding directly, Fakhar clarified that he was not fully fit for the demands of 50-over cricket at the time the ODI squad was finalised. He explained that his return to competitive cricket only came after successfully clearing fitness tests.

“Abdur Rouf Bhai, I was not 100% fit to play 50-over games. In that case, Aaqib Javed was right. I am playing these games after clearing the fitness tests on the 15th,” Fakhar stated.

His response effectively defended the selection committee’s stance, suggesting that the timing of his recovery played a crucial role in his omission.

The exchange between the two cricketers concluded on a positive note, with Rouf acknowledging Fakhar’s commitment and reiterating support for national players.

He also indicated that player well-being remains the top priority, moving to defuse the situation.

“Great catch anyway. No need to worry. We are here to support our players like you. Nothing is more important than you guys. I am deleting [the post],” he stated.

Fakhar Zaman doubtful for ODI series against Bangladesh

LAHORE: Pakistan’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh have suffered an early setback, with veteran opener Fakhar Zaman likely to miss the three-match assignment due to a hamstring injury.

According to reports, the left-handed batter is currently undergoing rehabilitation after picking up the injury, casting serious doubt over his availability for the tour.

While no official confirmation has been issued yet, indications suggest that the 35-year-old may not recover in time for the series.

Pakistan are scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on March 9, with all three ODIs set to be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on March 11, 13 and 15.

Fakhar Zaman had a restricted outing at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, featuring in just two matches. He missed Pakistan’s group-stage fixtures against the Netherlands, USA, India and Namibia before returning for the Super Eights.

Despite limited opportunities, the experienced opener made his presence felt. He struck a brisk 25 against England and followed it up with a scintillating 84 off 42 deliveries against Sri Lanka, smashing nine fours and four sixes in a commanding knock.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh tour itself remains under observation amid ongoing regional tensions. Sources suggest the series will proceed only if the prevailing situation does not escalate into travel or security concerns.

Schedule of Pakistan-Bangladesh series

  • First ODI – March 11
  • Second ODI – March 13
  • Third ODI – March 15
  • First Test – May 8 to 12

‘Babar, Fakhar can be dropped,’ Agha insists on merit-based selection

COLOMBO: Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha, on Friday, emphasised that team selection will be determined strictly by merit, with no senior player, including Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, guaranteed a spot in the Playing XI.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Pakistan’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 against the Netherlands, Agha emphasised that the team’s priority is to field the combination best suited to winning.

“We have arrived as a 15-member squad, and we will try to play the combination that is best for the team. Even if a senior player, whether Fakhar or Babar, does not fit into the combination, we will not play them,” he said.

“Fakhar and Babar have given great performances for Pakistan for years. I fully support them, but we will make the Playing XI only based on what is good for the team.”

Agha also expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and mindset, insisting there is no pressure ahead of the opening games.

“Our preparation has been very good. We will try to win every match and believe we can lift the World Cup,” he added.

The captain also voiced frustration over off-field topics dominating press conferences, calling for discussions to remain focused on cricket.

“Lately, there have been too many questions that are not about cricket. We are here as sportsmen and want to talk only about the game. We try to keep our focus on cricket and not let outside factors affect us,” he said.

Salman Ali Agha acknowledged that the weather could be a factor in Sri Lanka, but insisted it was beyond the team’s control.

“You cannot fight the weather or rain; it is not in our control. What is in our control is our performance, and we will try to deliver in all matches. Our focus is on winning our games,” he said.

He also backed spinner Usman Tariq, whose bowling action has come under scrutiny, calling him an X-factor for Pakistan.

“I don’t understand why there is so much talk about his action. His action has already been cleared twice. Usman Tariq is an X-factor for us, and we will use him whenever we feel we need him,” Agha said.

The captain confirmed he will continue to bat at number three.

“I am performing well at number three, so I will continue to bat there. There is no need to change it,” he said.

On the strategy against the Netherlands, the Pakistan captain highlighted the importance of executing plans against teams Pakistan does not face regularly.

“We do not play against teams like the Netherlands very often, so we must remain careful. We have played good cricket over the past six months, and now it is about executing our plans,” he concluded.
