Women’s T20 World Cup: Fatima Sana rejoins Pakistan squad ahead of New Zealand clash

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana has arrived in Dubai to rejoin the national squad ahead of tomorrow’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash against New Zealand at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Fatima had left the tournament midway to attend her father’s funeral in Karachi on 10 October. She missed Pakistan’s match against Australia, where the team suffered a humiliating nine-wicket loss under the captaincy of Muneeba Ali.

Pakistan are currently placed in fourth place in Group B with one victory and two losses after three games. They will play their last match against New Zealand, which is a must-win game for them to keep their hopes alive for the semi-final.

The Green Shirts have to beat New Zealand by a substantial margin and then hope for other results to go their way.

Fatima Sana played a key role in Pakistan’s victory over Sri Lanka in their tournament opener and earned the Player of the Match award for her performance.

England crush Scotland to stay perfect in Women’s T20 World Cup

SHARJAH: Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Maia Bouchier scored dominant half-centuries to power England to a thumping ten-wicket victory over Scotland in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.

With this victory, England jumped to the top of Group B, having won all three of their matches in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 so far.

Chasing a 110-run target, England took only 10 overs to finish the game with Bouchier hitting the winning boundary.

Bouchier set the tone for the chase with three boundaries off the first three balls of the innings. Danni Wyatt-Hodge also joined the party in the fourth over, hitting tree boundaries against Olivia Bell.

Both batters continued their dominant batting display, striking regular boundaries to achieve the target in ten overs.

Maia Bouchier scored an unbeaten 62 runs from 34 balls, which featured 12 boundaries, while Danni Wyatt-Hodge struck 51 off 26 with seven boundaries.

Scotland opted to bat first after winning the toss and got off to a cautious start as they managed 38 runs in eight overs before Nat Sciver-Brunt broke the opening stand.

Saskia Horley went back to the pavilion after scoring a mere 13 runs from 23 balls. Meanwhile, Sarah Bryce scored 27 off 31 before falling prey to Sophie Ecclestone.

Kathryn Bryce held on to one end for Scotland, but could not find enough support from the other end. She top-scored with 33 runs from 28 balls with the help of four boundaries.

Charlie Dean castled Bryce on the last ball of the 17th over to leave Scotland reeling at 89-5.

Megan McColl and Katherine Fraser scored unbeaten 10 and 6 to push the team’s total to 109-6 in their allocated 20 overs.

Sophie Ecclestone led England’s bowling attack with two wickets, while Nat Sciver-Brunt, Lauren Bell, Charlie Dean and Danielle Gibson bagged one scalp each.

Brits stars as South Africa thump Bangladesh in Women’s T20 World Cup

DUBAI: A disciplined bowling effort, followed by Tazmin Brits’ anchoring knock steered South Africa to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the 16th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana’s decision to bat first did not prove beneficial as her side could accumulate 106/3 in their set of 20 overs.

The Asian side had a shaky start to their innings as they lost Dilara Akter (0) on just the second delivery of the innings.

Following the early hiccup, Sobhana Mostary joined opening batter Shathi Rani in the middle.

The duo batted cautiously amid their 36-run partnership for the second wicket until Annerie Dercksen dismissed Rani in the eighth over.

Shathi Rani played a scratchy 19-run knock from 30 deliveries with the help of two boundaries including a six.

Bangladesh continued to bat defensively after Rani’s dismissal as the 45-run partnership between skipper Nigar Sultana and Mostary came from 56 balls.

Mostary remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with a 43-ball 38 while Sultana carried her bat all the way through and returned unbeaten with a 38-ball 32.

For South Africa, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Annerie Dercksen and Marizanne Kapp took one wicket apiece.

Chasing a modest 107-run target, South Africa comfortably knocked the winning runs on the second delivery of the 18th over.

The Proteas had a shaky start to the pursuit as they lost their captain Laura Wolvaardt in the third over with just 23 runs on the board.

Wolvaardt’s dismissal, however, did not bother South Africa much as Brits and Anneke Bosch recorded a match-defining second-wicket stand, which yielded 53 runs at a brisk rate before both both fell in quick succession.

Brits remained the top-scorer for South Africa with a 41-ball 42, laced with five boundaries, while Bosch made a run-a-ball 25.

Later, Marizanne Kapp (13*) and Chloe Tryon (14*) guided South Africa home with a sensible unbeaten 26-run partnership.

Fahima Khatun was the standout bowler for Bangladesh, picking up two wickets, while Ritu Moni made one scalp.

The seven-wicket victory put South Africa at the top of Group B standings of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with six points in four matches while Bangladesh remained at fourth with two points in as many matches.

Plimmer’s half-century aids New Zealand to thump Sri Lanka

SHARJAH: Georgia Plimmer’s anchoring half-century powered New Zealand to a thumping eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the 15th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka only managed 115/5 in the allotted 20 overs despite Chamari Athapaththu’s sensible knock up the order.

The Asian champions got off to a briefly flying start to their innings with Athapaththu dominating the Proteas bowlers.

The brisk opening stand ended in the fourth over when Vishmi Gunaratne perished after a scratchy eight-run knock.

Gunaratne’s dismissal pushed Sri Lanka to the backfoot, and Athapathu then put together a cautious partnership with Harshitha Samarawickrama that lasted for 10 overs and only yielded 48 runs.

Sri Lanka then suffered a massive blow to their batting expedition as both Athapththu and Samarawickrama perished in quick succession, leaving their side reeling at 76/3 in 14.2 overs.

Athapaththu remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with a 41-ball 35 while Samarawickrama made 18 off 29 balls.

Sri Lanka soon lost two more wickets as Kavisha Dilhari and Anushka Sanjeewani walked back after modest contributions before an unbeaten 18-run partnership between Nilakshika Silva and Ama Kachana gave a late push to their total.

Leigh Kasperek and Amelia Kerr claimed two wickets each for New Zealand, followed by Eden Carson with one.

In response, New Zealand comfortably chased down the modest target for the loss of just two wickets and 15 balls to spare.

Openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer laid a solid foundation for the pursuit with a 49-run partnership, which culminated with the former’s dismissal in the eighth over.

Bates scored 17 off 22 balls, hitting one boundary.

Plimmer then partnered with Amelia Kerr and added 46 runs for the second wicket before falling victim to Athapaththu, briefly after amassing her half-century.

She remained the top-scorer for New Zealand with a well-crafted 53 off 44 deliveries, laced up with four boundaries.

Skipper Sophie Devine then joined Kerr in the middle and made sure there were no further hiccups for New Zealand in the modest pursuit with an unbeaten 23-run partnership.

Kerr smashed three boundaries on her way to a 31-ball 34, while Devine made 13 not out.

For Sri Lanka, Athapaththu and Sachini Nisansala could pick up a wicket apiece.

The eight-wicket victory lifted New Zealand to third in Group A standings of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with four points in three matches while Sri Lanka concluded their campaign winless.

Gardner takes four as Australia crush Pakistan by nine wickets

DUBAI: Ashleigh Gardner’s four-wicket haul remained the cornerstone of Australia’s nine-wicket thrashing of Pakistan in the 14th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Friday.

Chasing a modest 83-run target, Australia comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of just one wicket and 54 balls to spare.

Openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney (15) gave Australia a flying start to the pursuit with a rampant 36-run partnership, which lasted with the latter’s dismissal in the fifth over.

But Healy continued smashing the Pakistan bowlers and had brought Australia in touching distance but severe cramps forced her to retire hurt in the 10th over.

She remained the top-scorer for Australia with a 23-ball 37, laced up with five fours.

Experienced all-rounder Ellyse Perry was then joined by Ashleigh Gardner in the middle and the duo made sure to steer Australia to an important victory without further damage.

Perry scored an unbeaten 22 off 23 balls, while Gardner made seven not out.

For Pakistan, Sadia Iqbal picked up the solitary wicket.

Put into bat first, Pakistan only managed 82 before getting bundled out on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

The Green Shirts started their innings cautiously with stand-in skipper Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin batting defensively.

To cope with the slow start, Muneeba looked to accelerate and target Sophie Molineux in the fourth over but ended up handing a simple catch to Phoebe Litchfield after scoring seven off 12 deliveries.

Pakistan then lost three more wickets in quick succession and had been reduced to 29/4 in eight overs.

Australia’s bowlers extended their dominance over Pakistan with regular strikes but Aliya Riaz offered a notable fightback and made sure to keep the scoreboard ticking until her dismissal in the final over.

She remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a 32-ball 26 with the help of three boundaries.

Besides her, only Sidra Amin and Iram Javed, 12 each, and Nida Dar (10) made it to the double figures.

Ashleigh Gardner was the standout bowler for Australia, returning brilliant figures of 4/21 in her four overs. She was supported by Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham, who bagged two wickets each.

The nine-wicket victory strengthened Australia’s command at the summit of Group A of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with six points in three matches while Pakistan slipped to fourth with two points in as many matches.

West Indies crush Bangladesh to push for semi-final qualification

SHARJAH: Karishma Ramharack’s four-fer, followed by Hayley Matthews’ blistering knock up the order gave West Indies a massive eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the 13th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Chasing a modest total, West Indies knocked the winning runs on the fifth delivery of the 13th over with eight wickets in hand.

Hayley Matthews provided West Indies a flying start to the pursuit with a brisk 34 off 22 deliveries, laced with six boundaries.

She was involved in a rampant 52-run opening partnership with Stafanie Taylor, who scored 27 off 29 deliveries before getting retired hurt.

Wicketkeeper batter Shemaine Campbell kept the momentum in West Indies’ favour with a 16-ball 21 before Deandra Dottin’s quickfire 19-run cameo off just seven balls steered West Indies to an important victory.

For Bangladesh, Nahida Akter and Marufa Akter could pick up a wicket apiece.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews’ decision to bowl first bore fruits as her bowlers dominated Bangladesh and reduced them to 103/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

Bangladesh had a sloppy start to their innings as they lost both their openers Shathi Rani and Dilara Akter inside batting powerplay with just 33 runs on the board.

Skipper Nigar Sultana then joined forces with Shobhana Mostary and launched a decent recovery.

The pair added 40 runs for their third-wicket partnership, which culminated with Mostary’s dismissal in the 13th over. The right-handed batter made a 22-ball 16.

Bangladesh slipped further when they lost two more wickets in quick succession which brought their total down to 75/5 in 14.4 overs.

However, Sultana kept going and put together a defiant 21-run partnership with Ritu Moni (10) before both perished in the span of six deliveries.

Sultana remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with a 44-ball 39, laced up with four boundaries.

Karishma Ramharack was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies, returning brilliant bowling figures of 4/17, followed by Afy Fletcher, who bagged two wickets.

Remember, this is a must-win game for both West Indies and Bangladesh, placed third and fourth respectively in Group B standings of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Bangladesh had a dream start to their campaign with a 16-run victory over Scotland before coming up 21 runs short against former champions England.

They next face South Africa, who are at the summit with four points in three matches.

West Indies had a disastrous start to their campaign as they succumbed to a 10-wicket thrashing against South Africa but rout Scotland in their next fixture by six wickets and 50 balls to spare to move to third.
