Bangladesh on top after Nahid Rana’s five-for against West Indies

KINGSTON: Nahid Rana claimed his first five-wicket haul to take Bangladesh ahead of the West Indies before the tourists’ usually suspect batting line-up displayed a measure of resilience to claim the upper hand on the third day of the second Test here at Sabina Park.

Rana led the rout of the home side’s first innings for 146 on Monday with impressive figures of five for 61, giving the visitors a lead of 18 runs.

Buoyed by that effort, the Bangladesh top-order batting then displayed the sort of shot-making confidence previously unseen in this brief series to reach stumps at 193 for five in the second innings, a lead of 211 with five wickets in hand.

Given that the highest successful run-chase in a Test match at Sabina Park is just 211, achieved by the West Indies against Sri Lanka in 2003, history would appear to be on the side of the tourists forcing a series-levelling victory over the final two days.

Starting the day at 70 for one, West Indies were swiftly undermined by the 22-year-old Rana, who added four more victims to the dismissal of Mikyle Louis the previous evening.

Rana was well supported by fellow seamer Hasan Mahmud, who returned with bowling figures of 2-19.

Keacy Carty top-scored for West Indies with 40 while captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the first wicket of the day when he was caught in the gully off Rana, contributed 39.

“We knew it was coming at some stage,” said Bangladesh bowling coach Andre Adams. “When you bowl 150 k’s (km/h) you are going to take wickets eventually.

“We’ve got to look after him. That’s why he didn’t play in the first Test match. Luckily he has guys out there like Taskin (Ahmed) and Hasan as fellow seamers to keep him focused on the field.”

Bangladesh rallied from the early loss of Mahmudul Hasan Joy at the start of the second innings with 46 from Shadman Islam and a 39-ball 42 from captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who promoted himself to number four in the order, taking the initiative from a West Indies team which lost the plot in the final session when they insisted on ultra-aggression and paid the price with a succession of boundaries.

Bangladesh Playing XI: Shadman Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque, Shahadat Hossain, Litton Das (wk), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (c), Jaker Ali, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana

West Indies Playing XI: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Mikyle Louis, Keacy Carty, Kavem Hodge, Alick Athanaze, Justin Greaves, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales

Joseph strikes twice as West Indies continue to dominate Bangladesh

ANTIGUA: West Indies right-arm pacer Alzarri Joseph bagged two wickets in the final session of the second day after West Indies gathered a 162-run lead at the back of brilliant half-centuries from Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood to power the home side to continue their domination over Bangladesh.

The hosts after resuming their first inning at 95/2 on the second day of the ongoing first Test, put on a decent show with the bat as the side managed to post a commendable 265 at the back of outstanding fifties from Blackwood and the skipper Brathwaite.

The overnight pair of Brathwaite and Nkrumah Bonner carried the momentum and showed no sign of rustiness as the duo kept ticking the scoreboard until the 63rd over as the latter perished as he was castled by the Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hassan for 33.

Women’s WC: West Indies beat Bangladesh in a low scoring thriller

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: West Indian all-rounder Hayley Matthews shone with the ball; taking four wickets to assist West Indies edged past Bangladesh by four runs in a low scoring thriller of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, here on Friday.

Set to chase a paltry 141, Bangladesh’s batting line-up failed and fell four runs short of the target as they bowled out for 136 in the last over.

Coming out to chase a skimpy total, Bangladesh fumbled at the start as the side lost their first wicket for a mere one run. Sharmin Akhter and Fargana Hoque then put on a brief 29 runs partnership to anchor the run chase.

Their stand, however, could not get going for long as Sharmin walked back to the pavilion after managing to score just 17. Fargana, on the other hand, made her way back after putting on a 30-runs partnership with the skipper Nigar Sultana.

With the Fargana-Nigar partnership, the side was cruising in the run chase with 60/2 in the 22nd over, but, Fargana’s dismissal sparked a match-defining collapse as the side could only manage to score 136 for the loss of all 10 wickets.

Bangladesh’s lower order batter Nahida Akter remained the top-scorer for her side with Nigar as they both scored 25 each. The former, however, remained unbeaten.

For West Indies, Matthews led the way with four wickets, while Afy Fletcher and Stefanie Taylor picked up three wickets each.

Batting first, the West Indian batting line-up also failed as they only managed to post a paltry 140/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

West Indian wicket-keeper batter Sehmanie Campbelle played a gritty knock and powered her side to a reputable total as wickets were tumbling at the other end.

Campbelle, coming out to bat when the side was 48/3 in the 15th over, played an astonishing knock and carried her bat till the end. She scored 53 off 107 balls with the help of five boundaries.

The rest of the West Indian batter could not contribute significantly to the total as the side could only get to 140 in 50 overs.

For Bangladesh, Salma Khatun and Nahida bagged two wickets each, while Jahanara Alam, Rumana Ahmed, and Ritu Moni struck out a batter each.
