Rain washes out Pakistan-Zimbabwe U19 tri-series clash

HARARE: The third fixture of the One Day International (ODI) tri-series between Pakistan and Zimbabwe U19 teams has been called off due to persistent rain.

After Pakistan posted a massive 354-7 on the board at the end of their 50 overs, rain played spoilsport, preventing Zimbabwe from batting.

The Green Shirts won the toss and capitalized on favourable conditions with Sameer Minhas and Usman Khan scoring sublime centuries.

After losing Ali Hassan Baloch for eight in the fifth over, Minhas and Usman forged a monumental 199-run partnership.

The duo brought the score to 239 in 33.3 overs with Sameer Minhas bowing out after another magnificent innings.

The right-hander continued his run spree and scored 142 from 106 balls, peppered with 17 fours and four maximums. Meanwhile, Usman marched on and went on to score a hundred.

He eventually departed after propelling the team’s score to over 300 run mark. He made 121 from 112, which included 12 fours and two sixes.

Huzaifa Ahsan remained the other notable contributor, providing the innings a late impetus with 54 off  53 deliveries. The Karachi-born batter struck three fours and two sixes in his knock.

For Zimbabwe, Kirby Madharamete picked up three wickets, whereas Panashe Mazai also managed to take two.

For the unversed, the tri-series featuring Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan is serving as a preparatory ground ahead of the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup, which will begin on 15th January.

Salah snatches added-time winner for Egypt after Zimbabwe scare

Mohamed Salah scored in added time to snatch a 2-1 victory for record seven-time champions Egypt over lowly ranked Zimbabwe in an Africa Cup of Nations Group B thriller in Agadir on Monday.

Salah came to Morocco after not starting in five consecutive Liverpool matches, with his omission leading to an outburst against manager Arne Slot.

But his uncertain future at Anfield was forgotten as he pounced on a loose ball inside the box and beat 40-year-old Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi with a perfectly placed shot into the corner.

What was expected to be a comfortable start for Egypt in Group B proved anything but as Prince Dube gave Zimbabwe a 20th-minute lead, they retained it until Omar Marmoush equalised after 63 minutes.

Victory leaves Egypt level on three points after the first series of group matches with South Africa, who beat Angola 2-1 in Marrakesh earlier.

Egypt were quick to apply pressure, forcing all 11 Zimbabweans to retreat deep into their half at the 40,000-seat stadium in the southern coastal city.

Salah delivered a dangerous cross that did not bear fruit, then had a close-range shot blocked as the Pharaohs laid siege to the Warriors’ goalmouth.

Then, 20 minutes into the first half, Zimbabwe silenced the largely Egypt-supporting crowd by taking the lead.

Emmanuel Jalai crossed into the box, Dube won possession, turned and fired a low shot past veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy into the corner of the net.

It could have been even worse for Egypt as the ball ran loose in their six-yard area soon after, before El Shenawy finally grasped it.

Egypt coach and former star Hossam Hassan grew increasingly frustrated on the touchline as he shouted instructions.

There was a moment of hope for the former champions when Marmoush beat an offside trap, but Arubi dashed out of his area, won the race for possession and cleared.

Marmoush went close as half-time drew near, unleashing a long-range shot that produced a superb finger-tip save from Arubi.

As the frustration of the Egyptians grew, former Aston Villa striker Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan took a dive inside the box and was yellow-carded by the Senegalese referee.

Mohamed Salah was in perpetual motion and had a half-chance in added time at the end of the opening half, but Zimbabwe blocked his attempt.

The second half was a repeat of the first, with endless Egyptian pressure and heroic Zimbabwean defending.

After several near misses, Egypt levelled on 63 minutes when Marmoush got behind the defence, picked up a pass, darted forward and slammed the ball into the net from a tight angle.

Salah found himself one-on-one with a defender 12 minutes from the end of regular time, but his hurried shot flew over. Then came his added-time winner.

Ahead of the match, Salah had shown no signs of being distracted by the uncertainty surrounding his future at Liverpool, according to Hassan, an AFCON winner as a player.

“I feel his motivation is very, very strong. Salah is an icon and will remain so. He is one of the best players in the world, and I support him in everything he does,” said Hassan.

Salah did not start any of the last five Liverpool games before the AFCON, and things came to a head following a Premier League draw at Leeds United when he claimed he had been “thrown under the bus” by Slot.

That suggested a move away from the troubled league champions during the January transfer window was a real possibility.

Salah wants to lead Egypt to a record-extending eighth AFCON title. He has never won the continental title, coming closest by being part of the teams that were runners-up in 2017 and 2022.

Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan added 29 for the opening wicket in 2.3 overs. The former was caught after scoring 13 from 8 with the help of two sixes.

Following the early wicket, Sahibzada Farhan and Babar Azam forged a 103-run stand as both players flexed their muscles at the back end of the innings.

Farhan, who remained the core aggressor, made 63 from 41 balls, laced with three maximums and four boundaries, while Babar played the second fiddle and hit two sixes and seven fours on his way to 74 from 52 balls.

Sahibzada departed in the 15th over when Pakistan were cruising at 132 in 15.2 overs.

Nonetheless, it was Fakhar Zaman’s cameo in the last over that took Pakistan near the 200-run mark. The southpaw, who came down the order, hit three sixes in his 27 from just 10 balls.

All-round Raza stars in Zimbabwe’s big win over Sri Lanka

RAWALPINDI: Sikandar Raza’s all-round show powered Zimbabwe to a commanding victory over Sri Lanka in the second match of the T20I tri-series here at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Zimbabwe bowlers inflicted a miserable start on them as the Irelanders were 25-3 in 6.1 overs.

Nissanka’s horror run on the Pakistan tour continued as he could not open his account, while Kusal Perera (4) followed him after in the second over. It was cheery on top for Chevrons as Kusal Mendis was run out after scoring six.

Zimbabwe continued with impressive bowling and did not allow any of the batters to settle, except skipper Dasun Shanaka, who remained the top-scorer.

Shanaka made 34 from 25 with the aid of two sixes and two fours.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Nawaz reflected on his performance, calling the win a confidence booster for the team.

“I am feeling good, and starting the series well gives you good confidence as a team,” he said.

Regarding the conditions, he highlighted the role of pitch and his game plan.

“Can be a little difficult sometimes, still, as a bowler, I was just trying to stick to my plan. And the pitch was helping a little as well,” he said. [The pitch ] was a little different. Rawalpindi is my home ground, and usually high scoring. But today it played different,” he continued.

The 31-year-old said he is confident in his game but also emphasized adaptability in T20 cricket.

“I feel I’m at the top of my game, but T20 cricket momentum can change in one or two overs, so you have to be on top all the time and keep reading the situation of the game. That’s what we did well today, I think. I also want to dedicate this award to my family and kids,” he concluded.

Fakhar, Usman star as Pakistan beat Zimbabwe in tri-series opener

RAWALPINDI: Fakhar Zaman and Usman Khan’s calculated knocks led Pakistan to a win against Zimbabwe in the opening match of the T20I tri-series here at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a stiff 148, Pakistan hit the winning runs on the loss of five wickets with four balls to spare.

Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub started well in pursuit of the chase, adding 27 in 4.1 overs. The stand broke with Farhan’s wicket, who made 16 from 15 balls.

The hosts were pegged back with two more wickets in quick succession, which reduced them to 30-3 in 5.4 overs. Babar Azam was trapped lbw for a duck, while Salman Agha could only manage to score one.

With wickets tumbling, Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman tried to arrest the slide and stitched a brief 24-run partnership. The stand brought the total to 50-run runs at the end of nine overs.

However, Zimbabwe mounted further pressure through Saim’s wicket, who scored 22 from 26, striking four fours and a six.

Yet Pakistan thrived, courtesy of Fakhar Zaman’s and Usman Khan’s match-winning partnership of 61 runs. The duo batted responsibility and helped the home side cross the 100-run mark at the end of the 15th over.

Fakhar’s 32-ball 44 included two sixes and two fours. With Green Shirts requiring 33 from 24 balls, Mohammad Nawaz walked in and forged a 36-run partnership that helped his side cross the finishing line.

Nawaz hit two fours and a six in his 21 from only 12 balls, while Usman Khan’s gutsy 37 from 28 featured three fours.

For Zimbabwe, Brad Evans remained the standout bowler and picked up two wickets.

Earlier, Pakistan spinners bowled economical spells to restrict Zimbabwe from scoring a formidable total.

Put into bat first, Zimbabwe managed to score 147-8 at the end of their 20 overs despite a solid start.

Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani put on a 72-run partnership in just eight overs. Both players batted briskly in the power play, amassing 13 from skipper Shaheen Afridi’s opening over.

The duo took on fast bowlers and took advantage of the fielding restrictions, scoring 11 and 17 from Saim Ayub’s fifth and Abrar Ahmed’s sixth over.

As a result, the visitors were 59 at the end of the power play.

However, it was Mohammad Nawaz who not only halted the scoring but also broke the partnership with Marumani’s wicket. He hit three fours and a six in his 30 from 22 balls.

Brendan Taylor was the second wicket to fall, courtesy of a run that sparked a collapse and halted Zimbabwe’s progress. Taylor departed after scoring run a ball 14. Consequently, they were reduced to 91-2 in 11 overs.

After 10 overs, the Green Shirts put on brakes on the visitors’ scoring rate and never allowed them to recover. Brian Bennett remained the top scorer with 49 from 36, laced with eight fours.

Zimbabwe arrive in Pakistan for T20I tri-series

ISLAMABAD: Zimbabwe national cricket team has landed in Pakistan ahead of the T20I tri-nation series featuring the hosts and Sri Lanka, slated to take place in Rawalpindi from November 18 to 29.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the Sikandar Raza-led side will take a day’s rest before beginning training on Friday as preparations ramp up for the week-long tournament.

The series, initially scheduled to begin on November 17, was pushed back by a day following uncertainty surrounding Sri Lanka’s ongoing white-ball tour of Pakistan.

The revision came after several Sri Lankan players expressed a desire to return home, citing security concerns in the aftermath of a recent bomb blast in Islamabad.

In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the situation, saying the team management had informed the board about the players’ concerns.

The SLC, however, assured its squad that all safety measures were being taken in close coordination with the PCB and local authorities to ensure their well-being.

“Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was informed by the team management that several members of the national team touring Pakistan have requested to return home, citing safety concerns,” the board said.

“Following this development, SLC immediately engaged with the players and assured them that all such concerns are being duly addressed in close coordination with the PCB and the relevant authorities.”

The statement further clarified that any player opting to return home despite the board’s assurances would be replaced, with their decision to be formally reviewed.

Meanwhile, the ongoing Pakistan–Sri Lanka ODI series has also seen a minor adjustment, with the remaining two fixtures in Rawalpindi now set to take place on November 14 and 16, both postponed by a day each.
