Younis Khan reacts to Waqar Younis getting major position in PCB

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan reacted to the reports of Waqar Younis getting a major role in the ranks of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Reports emerged on Tuesday that PCB Mohsin Naqvi has decided to hand over the power to make cricket decisions to Waqar.

The sources further claimed that Naqvi would oversee the administrative affairs only, while Waqar would be responsible for all the decisions regarding international and domestic selection committees, players’ No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and other important cricket matters.

According to the PCB Constitution 2014, the chairman has the authority to delegate his power to someone, thereby enabling the transfer of powers to Waqar.

Meanwhile, Younis Khan, during an interaction with the media here on Wednesday, backed PCB Chairman Naqvi’s decision to hand the reigns of the cricket affairs to Waqar Younis.

“I’ve played under Waqar Younis and I think it’s a good sign that he’s coming back to the cricket board,” said Younis.

“Waqar Younis has the opportunity to solve the [cricketing] issues,” he added.

Younis further commented on the recent dip in the Pakistan men’s cricket team’s performance and emphasized the need to improve the infrastructure.

“Pakistan’s performance used to be on the top in the past. I think we need to work on our infrastructure,” Younis said.

The former captain, who led Pakistan to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2009, also called for the resumption of the bilateral cricketing ties between fierce rivals Pakistan and India.

“Pakistan-India cricket should go ahead. I wish someone like Pervez Musharraf would come and restore Pak-India cricket,” said Younis.

Younis Khan also expressed his desire for India to visit Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

He also highlighted that the Pakistan team was always treated with respect whenever they visited India.

“I wish to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in Pakistan [in Champions Trophy 2025]. Whenever we toured India, we were treated with utmost respect,” he concluded.

Can’t wait to play first-ever day-night Test: Alyssa Healy

Australia women’s captain Alyssa Healy has expressed her excitement for the upcoming first-ever day-night Test match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Healy and vice-captain Tahlia McGrath were at the MCG last night to mark six months to go until Australia and England play in the day-night Women’s Ashes Test between January 30 – February 2, 2025.

The match coincides with the 90th anniversary of the first-ever women’s Test Match at the MCG, which was the third Test of the Australia-England series in 1934-35.

“We can’t wait to play the first-ever day-night Test at MCG. It’s going to be a special occasion as we honour the 90th anniversary of the first women’s Test series under lights at this iconic venue,” said Alyssa Healy.

“We are preparing for a big summer including the ICC T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, white ball series at home against New Zealand and India culminating with the multi-format Ashes series. We hope the Australian fans get behind us as we take on some tough rivals this summer.”

CEO of Cricket Australia (CA) Nick Hockley also called it a historic occasion, while also praising the national women’s team.

“The Women’s Ashes will not only be a great sporting event between fierce rivals, it will add to the list of iconic sporting events held in Melbourne and I’m grateful to the Victorian Government and the Melbourne Cricket Club for their strong support.

“Our women’s team is one of the most successful in sporting history and this series promises to be a landmark occasion for Australian sport.”

“Now we have the opportunity to host our first-ever day-night Test which is sure to become another important moment in the MCG’s storied history.

Jason Gillespie rates Pakistan Shaheens’ performance in red-ball series

Pakistan’s newly-appointed Test coach Jason Gillespie shared his insights on Pakistan Shaheens’ performance in the two-match red ball series against Bangladesh A in Northern Territory, Darwin.

The two-match red-ball series between Shaheens and Bangladesh A culminated here on Monday, with the latter securing a narrow four-run victory on the final day of the second four-day match.

Earlier, Pakistan Shaheens registered an emphatic victory in the first four-day fixture to kick off a triumphant start to the tour.

In a video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Pakistan’s Test coach Jason Gillespie shared it was a mixed bag for the side as they won and lost one match each but emphasized the experience Shaheens’ players gathered amid the tour.

“It has been a wonderful experience for all the Shaheens players. We certainly learned a lot. It was a great opportunity for me to get to know the guys, see how they approach training, preparation, teamwork, and their work on the field. It’s been a real learning curve for me. I think the players have certainly benefited from this opportunity,” he said.

“That’s what the Shaheens is about—getting out there in foreign conditions against different opposition and being able to test their skills in this environment,” he added.

Jason Gillespie then went on to highlight the flaws in Pakistan Shaheens’ batting and bowling which resulted in them losing the second fixture.

“While there are plenty of lessons to learn from this game, our top seven batters did not quite deliver as expected. In both innings, four of our top seven got starts, but none managed to go on and achieve a really big score,” Gillespie said.

“Similarly, our partnerships were middling, with several in the forties and fifties, but we lacked those substantial partnerships that put the opposition under real pressure and drive the game forward. These are key areas for our batters to focus on, encouraging them to stay busy and shift the pressure back onto the opposition.

“We didn’t execute our plans as effectively as we could have in this game. Despite these challenges, it was a great experience getting to know the players and staff, who are a fantastic group of people.”

Following the two-match red-ball series against Bangladesh A, Pakistan Shaheens will now feature in a tri-series with the Northern Territory side and Bangladesh in Darwin. They will also participate in the nine-team Top End T20 Series.

Remember, Pakistan’s red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie’s stint with Pakistan Shaheens was until the red-ball series against Bangladesh A.

The former Australia cricketer will now gear up for his first international assignment as Pakistan are set to host Bangladesh for a two-match home Test series, scheduled to run from August 21 to September 3.

“I never think about captaincy,” says Shaheen Shah Afridi

Pakistan ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi on Monday asserted that he never thinks about captaincy and also representing the country is his prime focus.

Afridi, who has been in hot water after reports emerged of his alleged argument with batting coach Mohammad Yousuf amid the national team’s tour to Ireland and England ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, stated his upbringing is not such that he would bring negativity into the team.

“All team members are my friends. I was raised well and I always fight for my country,” said Shaheen.

“I never think about captaincy. My prime focus is to represent my country and would never bring negativity into the team,” he added.

Soon after the reports of his alleged misconduct with Yousuf emerged, it was reported in the local media that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would take disciplinary action against Shaheen Afridi and thus, he will not be considered for the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh.

When asked to share his two cents on the reports, Shaheen stated that he is unaware of such rumours.

“I don’t know if I’m being dropped from the Test series [against Bangladesh]. My role is to play cricket and I would do that with dignity,” he added.

Remember, reports of an alleged dispute between Pakistan captain Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi also emerged following the national men’s team’s poor run at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Details further suggested that former captains would resolve the alleged dispute between the three senior members of the national team and a meeting to mediate between them will be held at a former skippers’ residence upon Afridi’s return to the country.

“We toured India despite threats,” Shahid Afridi slams India’s Champions Trophy stance

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi lambasted the Board of Control in India (BCCI) over their indecision to send Team India to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025  is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February to March, however, India’s participation in the tournament is uncertain as the BCCI seeks the government’s approval to visit the country.

Meanwhile, former all-rounder Afridi while speaking to the media here on Monday, expressed his disappointment with the uncertainty surrounding India’s participation in the tournament.

Shahid Afridi claimed that the Pakistan cricket team toured India in the past despite the threats. He further slammed India for making excuses in order to avoid visiting Pakistan.

“If India does not have the intention of coming to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, then India will continue to make excuses,” said Afridi.

“The Pakistan cricket team toured India despite threats. Indian cricket team is welcome if they don’t want to visit Pakistan,” he added.

Remember, reports emerged in Indian media, citing a source from the BCCI, that the Indian team will not be visiting Pakistan for the upcoming ICC event.

Further reports claimed that the board has formally proposed Dubai and Sri Lanka as potential venues for hosting India’s matches.

Remember, India refused to travel to Pakistan to participate in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023. As a result, the continental event was held in a hybrid model with Sri Lanka stepping in as a co-host.

It is worth noting that India has not travelled to Pakistan since the Asia Cup in 2008 due to the long-standing political tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
