New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner sidelined for ‘at least a month’

New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has been ruled out for at least a month after scans confirmed a grade three ACL injury in his left shoulder, dealing a significant blow to the Black Caps ahead of a busy red-ball schedule.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury while fielding for the Mumbai Indians during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23.

Santner was forced off the field during the match and was later replaced, with subsequent assessments confirming the extent of the injury.

He has since returned to New Zealand, where a specialist advised a period of rest and rehabilitation of at least one month.

The recovery timeline effectively rules him out of the one-off Test against Ireland scheduled for May 27, as well as the opening Test of the three-match series against England at Lord’s starting June 4.

“The 34-year-old returned home to New Zealand this week and saw a specialist this morning who confirmed a rest and rehabilitation period of at least one month,” New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement.

“The diagnosis means Santner is unavailable for the one-off Test against Ireland [in late May] and the first Test against England [at Lord’s in early June], with his availability for the second and third Tests to be evaluated at a later date.”

New Zealand currently occupy second place in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings and will be aiming to maintain their strong position in the ongoing cycle despite the setback.

Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi invites Daren Sammy to PSL 11 final

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi has extended an official invitation to former captain Daren Sammy to attend the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 final, following strong fan demand after the former champions booked their place in the title decider.

Zalmi, led by Babar Azam, secured their spot in the final with a commanding win over Islamabad United in the Qualifier at the Gaddafi Stadium. The final is scheduled to take place at the same venue on Sunday.

Following the victory, fans flooded social media, urging Afridi to bring back Sammy, who famously led Zalmi to their maiden PSL title in 2017.

Responding to the calls, Afridi shared an Instagram story tagging the former West Indies skipper and inviting him to be part of the occasion.

“Brother, we are officially inviting you to witness the final match of Zalmi (fans request) @darensammy88,” Afridi wrote.

Daren Sammy remains one of the most iconic figures in Zalmi’s history, having been part of the franchise during its early years.

He captained the side for four seasons and played a key role in their 2017 title triumph, when they defeated Quetta Gladiators in the final.

Since that title-winning campaign, Zalmi have reached the final on three more occasions, in 2018, 2019 and 2021, but have fallen short each time in their quest for a second trophy.

However, the ongoing PSL 11 season has seen Zalmi return as one of the most dominant sides. They topped the league stage with eight wins, just one defeat and one no-result from 10 matches, finishing with 17 points and an impressive net run rate of 2.324.

Their win over Islamabad United marked their fifth appearance in a PSL final, and they will now face the winner of the second Eliminator, to be contested between Islamabad United and Hyderabad Kingsmen, in the grand finale.

CPL unveils 2026 draft and player acquisition rules

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has officially unveiled Player Acquisition and Draft Rules for the 2026 season, marking the start of a new three-year contract cycle running from 2026 to 2028.

The revised framework includes several important updates designed to enhance competitive balance, promote emerging talent, and incorporate a seventh franchise into the league. The draft picks will be revealed on the league’s official social media platforms on Friday, 15 May.

According to the new regulations, each franchise will field a 17-player squad comprising nine senior West Indies players, five overseas players, and three Breakout Players.

As the league’s newest team, the Jamaica Kingsmen are entitled to special draft rights. They have the option to select the first three players, specifically Jamaican players, but they are not required to use all three picks.

Fawad Sarwar is the owner of the Jamaica Kingsmen and Pakistan Super League (PSL) outfit Hyderabad Kingsmen.

These choices cannot be contested using the Right to Match Option (RMO). In this phase, the Kingsmen can pick up to one player from any current team, and any franchise that loses a player to the Kingsmen will gain an extra RMO.

After this initial phase, the draft will follow a structured sequence according to the 2025 league standings to promote competitive balance among all teams.

Franchises will be able to use RMOs to keep players from their 2025 squads if those players are chosen by another team during the draft.

Each current team starts with four RMOs: three can be used on players from any salary slot on their 2025 roster, and one is reserved for players who occupied salary slots seven to 17 and are nationals of the franchise’s home territory.

Teams that lose a player to the Jamaica Kingsmen at the beginning of the draft will get an extra RMO, usable in any round.

The Kingsmen will have one RMO available for any Jamaican player, as long as, if the player participates in the 2025 CPL, they must have held a salary slot between seven and 17.

In terms of player retention, each existing franchise was allowed to keep one Breakout Player from its 2025 squad before the draft, which remains the only pre-draft retention method for the 2026 season.

Breakout Players continue to be vital to the league’s growth strategy, with every team required to include at least one player selected in rounds 15 to 17 in each matchday XI during the tournament.

Teams can also sign up to five overseas players through direct negotiations, with these players not part of the draft. However, no more than four overseas players can be named in any matchday XI.

CPL Tournament Operations Director Michael Hall stated that the framework was developed in close collaboration with all seven franchises, Cricket West Indies, and other stakeholders to ensure a balanced and competitive structure.

“We have worked closely with the seven CPL franchises, Cricket West Indies, and other key stakeholders to develop a framework that allows us to successfully introduce a seventh team while maintaining competitiveness and fairness across the league,,” Hall said.

“We are excited to see how the squads take shape and are confident that the expanded tournament will raise the standard of the CPL even further,” he concluded.

Tim Paine shares emotional note after Multan Sultans PSL 11 exit

LAHORE: Multan Sultans head coach Tim Paine posted an emotional message after their exit from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11.

Pain took to the social media platform ‘X’ after their loss against Hyderabad Kingsmen in Eliminator 1 on Wednesday, expressing gratitude over the journey.

“A memorable journey with the Multan Sultans has unfortunately come to an end this PSL,” Paine wrote.

“Had a great time with a fantastic group of people and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Gohar Shah,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Sultans’ campaign ended disappointingly as the Kingsmen delivered a strong all-round performance in their debut season, earning a spot in Eliminator 2 against Islamabad United, scheduled for Friday in Lahore.

Opting to bat first, Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne made a key decision that proved successful, as his team limited the 2021 champions to 159/9 despite a resilient half-century from Shan Masood.

In response, the Kingsmen easily chased the 160-run target, losing only two wickets and ending the match with 28 balls remaining.

Maaz Sadaqat and Usman Khan both scored 64 runs off 33 and 35 balls respectively, helping their team reach the target.

Despite their early exit, the Ashton Turner-led Multan Sultans had a commendable run overall, finishing third in the league stage with six wins and four losses from 10 matches, earning 12 points with a net run rate of 0.326.

Record-breaker Sabastian Sawe gets custom plate, bumper cash prize

Marathon world record-breaker Sabastian Sawe received a customized number plate and a whopping cash prize from the president of Kenya.

Sawe created history with a record run, winning the London Marathon in 1:59:30, shattering the previous benchmark of 2:00:35 set by his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum.

Following his achievement, the 31-year-old received a hero’s welcome at home and was honored by President William Ruto at the Statehouse in Nairobi on Thursday.

The 31-year-old received a hero’s welcome at home and was honored by President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi on Thursday.

He was offered Ksh5 million, a reward for Kenyan athletes who break a world record, and an extra Ksh3 million for a gold medal, taking his tally to Ksh8 million from the government.

In addition to this, the President also gifted him a car with a customized number plate reading ‘01 59 30’, highlighting his remarkable achievement.

Moreover, the runner gifted the President a pair of Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 supershoes, which he used to break the historic marathon record.

William Ruto praised Sebastian Sawe, saying his record is a testament to Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running.

“What Sabastian Sawe has done by running a marathon under two hours confirms Kenya’s place as the origin of wonder,” President Ruto said during the ceremony.

“If you are looking for the origin of wonder, it is right here, as we witnessed Sabastian Sawe make history and create new wonder for the world,” he added.

For the unversed, Kenya has dominated long-distance running, and its runners are superstars in the country. However, the pressure to break into the elite means that doping is a major problem in Kenya.

Two former Kenyan winners of the men’s race at the London Marathon, Wilson Kipsang, the victor in 2012 and 2014, and 2017 winner Daniel Wanjiru, are among those to have been subsequently banned.

In a bid to allay such suspicions about his own performances, Sawe has voluntarily subjected himself to extra drug testing, even paying $50,000 to be tested 25 times in the year by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) before last year’s Berlin race.

Kumar Sangakkara named in Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee

Sri Lanka’s legendary batter Kumar Sangakkara has been named to a Transformation Committee to run Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

The decision follows the government-led ouster of the SLC administration headed by Shammi Silva.

Sangakkara, one of Sri Lanka’s finest cricketers, is the most renowned name in the committee. He is joined by former cricketers Roshan Mahanama and the country’s maiden Test century-maker Sidath Wettimuny, along with several members of corporate, legal, and political backgrounds.

The head of the committee is a former member of parliament, Eran Wickramaratne — a politician from Sri Lanka’s main opposition party (Samagi Jana Balawegaya).

Following the announcement, Wickramaratne highlighted the committee’s objectives, including an overhaul of SLC’s governance framework.

“I am privileged to lead a nine-member committee of individuals with impeccable integrity and expertise,” Wickramaratne said.

“Our immediate priority is a total overhaul of the governance framework at SLC,” he continued. “The cornerstone of this effort will be the implementation of the new consitution, ensuring it serves as a robust, modern foundation for the sport.”

He also expressed confidence in bringing out the best in Sri Lankan players by providing them with top-tier facilities.

“We will focus on establishing the structures, world-class facilities, and incentive models necessary to empower our national teams. Our goal is to enable our players to consistently deliver world-class performances and elevate Sri Lanka back to the top tier of international rankings.”

Among the members, Wettimuny and Prakash Schaffter bring prior administrative experience, having served on the 2015 interim committee. Avanthi Colombage from the corporate sector, is the only woman on the panel.

For the unversed, SLC is the country’s richest sporting body, but it has been plagued by allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

Sri Lanka made an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted with India in February–March. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to comment on the latest government-led changes.

The ICC has previously suspended Sri Lanka’s membership in November 2023, citing political interference in the running of the national board. The suspension was lifted at the end of January 2024, and Silva’s committee was restored. He subsequently won a fourth term uncontested as president.

Ronaldo scores 970th goal as Al Nassr edge past Al Ahli

RIYADH: Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opening goal for Al Nassr as they secured a 2-0 victory over Al Ahli at Alawwal Park on Wednesday, extending their winning streak to an extraordinary 20 consecutive matches.

The result strengthened Al Nassr’s position at the top of the Saudi Pro League table, pushing their lead from eight points to 11 with just four league games remaining.

The win brings them within touching distance of the title, with momentum firmly on their side in the closing stretch of the season.

After a tightly contested encounter that remained goalless for 75 minutes, Ronaldo produced the decisive moment in trademark fashion.

The Portuguese superstar rose to meet Joao Felix’s inswinging corner and guided a perfectly timed flicked header into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Édouard Mendy with no chance.

The goal triggered an emotional celebration as Ronaldo sprinted toward Felix at the corner flag before being swarmed by teammates and staff, reflecting the importance of the breakthrough in a high-stakes fixture.

Al Nassr doubled their lead in the 90th minute when Kingsley Coman struck powerfully after Al Ahli failed to clear another set-piece, effectively sealing all three points.

The victory underlined Al Nassr’s dominant run of form, with 16 of their 20 consecutive wins coming in the league. Their consistency has left rivals struggling to keep pace, while Al Ahli, despite having one match remaining, are now effectively out of the title race.

Notably, this was Ronaldo’s 25th goal in the season, marking a significant personal milestone as he has now scored 25 or more league goals in three consecutive seasons for the first time since his remarkable nine-season streak between 2009-10 and 2017-18.

He has now scored nine goals in his last nine matches, further underlining his enduring impact.

The 39-year-old forward has now reached 970 career goals for club and country and has scored 126 times for Al Nassr in all competitions.
