CPL unveils 2026 draft and player acquisition rules

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has officially unveiled Player Acquisition and Draft Rules for the 2026 season, marking the start of a new three-year contract cycle running from 2026 to 2028.

The revised framework includes several important updates designed to enhance competitive balance, promote emerging talent, and incorporate a seventh franchise into the league. The draft picks will be revealed on the league’s official social media platforms on Friday, 15 May.

According to the new regulations, each franchise will field a 17-player squad comprising nine senior West Indies players, five overseas players, and three Breakout Players.

As the league’s newest team, the Jamaica Kingsmen are entitled to special draft rights. They have the option to select the first three players, specifically Jamaican players, but they are not required to use all three picks.

Fawad Sarwar is the owner of the Jamaica Kingsmen and Pakistan Super League (PSL) outfit Hyderabad Kingsmen.

These choices cannot be contested using the Right to Match Option (RMO). In this phase, the Kingsmen can pick up to one player from any current team, and any franchise that loses a player to the Kingsmen will gain an extra RMO.

After this initial phase, the draft will follow a structured sequence according to the 2025 league standings to promote competitive balance among all teams.

Franchises will be able to use RMOs to keep players from their 2025 squads if those players are chosen by another team during the draft.

Each current team starts with four RMOs: three can be used on players from any salary slot on their 2025 roster, and one is reserved for players who occupied salary slots seven to 17 and are nationals of the franchise’s home territory.

Teams that lose a player to the Jamaica Kingsmen at the beginning of the draft will get an extra RMO, usable in any round.

The Kingsmen will have one RMO available for any Jamaican player, as long as, if the player participates in the 2025 CPL, they must have held a salary slot between seven and 17.

In terms of player retention, each existing franchise was allowed to keep one Breakout Player from its 2025 squad before the draft, which remains the only pre-draft retention method for the 2026 season.

Breakout Players continue to be vital to the league’s growth strategy, with every team required to include at least one player selected in rounds 15 to 17 in each matchday XI during the tournament.

Teams can also sign up to five overseas players through direct negotiations, with these players not part of the draft. However, no more than four overseas players can be named in any matchday XI.

CPL Tournament Operations Director Michael Hall stated that the framework was developed in close collaboration with all seven franchises, Cricket West Indies, and other stakeholders to ensure a balanced and competitive structure.

“We have worked closely with the seven CPL franchises, Cricket West Indies, and other key stakeholders to develop a framework that allows us to successfully introduce a seventh team while maintaining competitiveness and fairness across the league,,” Hall said.

“We are excited to see how the squads take shape and are confident that the expanded tournament will raise the standard of the CPL even further,” he concluded.

The franchise that won its title four years ago acquired the services of Mohammad Amir in the draft held on June 18.

TKR is one of the most popular franchises in the CPL, boasting a star-studded squad which features the likes of Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Nicholas Pooran, Akeal Hosein and Alex Hales.

Along with Amir, the team has also brought in Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq in a bid to bolster the spin attack.

Mohammad Amir has been regular in CPL since the 2021 season. The left-arm pacer has represented three different franchises, Barbados Royals, Jamaica Tallawahs and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, scalping 51 wickets in 39 matches.

Mohammad Amir, who retired from international cricket last year, has continued to feature in T20 leagues worldwide. Apart from his league experience, the Pakistan star has played 331 T20 matches, taking 381 wickets.

The opening match of the tournament will be played between St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Antigua & Barbuda Falcons.

The CPL group stage fixture will run until 6 September, before the semi-finals take place at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

Matches will also be held in Saint Lucia, Trinidad, Barbados, in addition to St Kitts and Guyana.

Last year, the St Lucia Kings clinched their maiden title under the leadership of former Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis, as they defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final.

Mohammad Amir achieves major milestone in T20 cricket

Left-arm Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has achieved a significant milestone in T20 cricket as he became the third bowler from the country to take 350 wickets in the format.

The left-arm pacer, representing Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, achieved the feat in his side’s match against Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Amir took the wickets of Raymon Reifer and Romario Shepherd to join Wahab Riaz and Sohail Tanvir in the elite list of Pakistani bowlers to take 350 wickets in T20 cricket.

It’s worth noting that recently Amir also broke India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s all-time record of bowling the most maidens by a pacer in T20s.

During the CPL clash against Barbados Royals, Mohammad Amir bowled a maiden first over while defending 177 runs.

Amir outclassed hard-hitting batter Rakheem Cornwall with his exceptional skills and did not allow the batter to score a single run off his over.

The maiden pushed Mohammad Amir’s tally in the format to 25, leaving behind all top pacers in the world, including India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar (24) and Jasprit Bumrah (22), compatriots Wahab Riaz (21) and Mohammad Irfan (20) and New Zealand’s Trent Boult (17).

In the overall list, Amir is ranked third, only behind Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan (26) and West Indies’ Sunil Narine (30).

Guyana Amazon Warriors pick Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris for CPL 2023

West Indies’s marquee T20 event Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Guyana Amazon Warriors picked Mohammad Haris and Saim Ayub for the upcoming edition of the tournament.

The 11th edition of the CPL will run from August 17 to September 25 with six teams fighting to get their hands on the coveted title.

Meanwhile, the CPL on Wednesday, revealed three teams have confirmed their fifth overseas player ahead of this year’s extravaganza.

Consequently, the five-time runners-up Guyana Amazon Warriors have bolstered their squad with the addition of Pakistan batting prodigy Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris.

Saim rose to fame during this year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL). He scored 341 runs in 12 matches, at a strike rate of 165.53 with the help of five half-centuries.

The left-handed batter, at the back of a scintillating domestic record, got his maiden call-up for the away T20I series against Afghanistan in March.

He opened the innings for Pakistan in the three-match series against Afghanistan and scored 66 runs in as many matches, including a sensible 49-run knock in the final fixture.

Additionally, the Warriors have also announced that Rahmanullah Gurbaz will not be available for some of this year’s CPL due to international commitments. Gurbaz will be replaced by Pakistan international Mohammad Haris for that period.

Notably, Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris will captain Pakistan Shaheens in the eight-team 15-match ACC Men’s Emerging Asia Cup 2023, which is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka from 14 to 23 July.

Haris-led Pakistan Shaheens squad was scheduled to depart in the wee hours of Tuesday from Lahore for Sri Lanka via Dubai to feature in the eight-team tournament.

Shaheens are slotted in Group B with India A, Nepal and UAE A. Shaheens will open their campaign on 14 July with a match against Nepal, after which they play UAE A and India A on 17 and 19 July, respectively.

Amir, Imad’s Jamaica Tallawahs beat Barbados Royals to win CPL 2022

PROVIDENCE: Jamaica Tallawahs – featuring the Pakistani duo of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim – thrashed Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 final to lift their third title.

Set to chase a commendable 162 in the final, the Tallawahs comfortably steered to the glory in the 17th over with eight wickets to spare, thanks to a magnificent half-century from Brandon King.

The side, however, had a poor start to their run chase as they lost their opener, Kennar Lewis, for a duck at a combined score of a mere one.

Shamarh Brooks and King then put on a match-defining 86-run partnership for the second wicket and scored at a rapid pace.

The pair appeared solid and were looking confident to run away with the victory before experienced all-rounder Jason Holder struck in the 11th over to break the important partnership.

Holder trapped Brooks with a half-volley as he ended up flicking the ball straight to the deep square leg fielder before walking back to the pavilion after scoring 47 off 33 deliveries with the help of six boundaries and two sixes.

Brooks’ dismissal did not bother King much as he continued his domination over the Royals’ bowlers and carried on the winning momentum.

The right-handed top scored for his side with an unbeaten knock of 83 off just 50 balls, laced with 13 boundaries and two sixes, while skipper Rovman Powell scored an unbeaten 14 and made sure to firm one end.

For the Royals, Kyle Mayers and Holder managed to make one scalp each.

Batting first after winning the toss, the Royals could manage to finish at 161/7 in the allotted 20 overs despite an anchoring half-century from wicketkeeper batter Azam Khan.

Royals’ openers Rakheem Cornwall and Mayers gave a solid start to the side as they amassed 63 runs in the powerplay.

Fabian Allen, however, removed both the openers in his consecutive overs to shift the momentum in the Tallawahs’ favour.

Following the slump, Azam and Holder joined hands to script a much-needed recovery and added 48 runs for the third wicket.

The partnership remained heavily dominated by Azam but Holder, on the other hand, was too cautious before departing in the 15th over after scoring a snail-paced 17.

The Royals then began to lose wickets at an alarming rate as Nicholson Gordon triggered a lower-order collapse and halted the side from amassing a massive total.

Azam top-scored for Royals with 50 off 41 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and three sixes.

Allen and Gordon bagged three wickets each for Tallawahs in the final, while Imad struck out a batter.
