Pakistan thump South Africa in WCL 2025 clash

LEICESTER: Umar Amin’s impressive knock, followed by an all-round bowling performance, powered Pakistan Champions to a 31-run victory over South Africa Champions in the ninth fixture of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 here at Grace Road on Friday.

Chasing a daunting 198-run target, South Africa Champions could only score 167-9 in their allocated 20 overs.

In pursuit of the target, the Proteas lost their opening three batters inside seven overs. Hashim Amla (12), JJ Smuts (10), and Henry Davids (6) were removed cheaply as Pakistan Champions reduced them to 42-3.

South Africa continued to lose wickets in the middle, thus without any significant contributions, which left them reeling at 128-8 in 17.3 overs.

However, Morne van Wyk resisted with a valiant knock of 44 runs in quick time to reduce the margin of the defeat. His 20-ball innings featured five fours and two sixes.

For  Pakistan Champions, Sohail Tanvir and Mohammad Hafeez picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, Umar Amin’s 58 off 42 balls and Shoaib Malik’s brisk 46* propelled Pakistan Champions to a strong total.

After being put into bat first in WCL 2025 eighth fixture, Pakistan Champions posted 198-5 in their allocated 20 overs.

Pakistani openers provided a brisk 27-run start before Sharjeel Khan’s departure, who made 19 off 11 balls, with the aid of three fours and a six.

Kamran Akmal scored 17 off 11 balls, striking four boundaries, and was removed in the penultimate over of the powerplay as Pakistan Champions were reduced to 54-2 in 5.3 overs.

South Africa’s Champions fight back with another wicket, that of in-form Mohammad Hafeez, in the eighth over. He was dismissed for eight runs.

However, Umar Amin’s and Shoaib Malik’s imposing  79-run partnership steered the runners-up of the last edition. Both batters batted fluently, taking Pakistan above 150 runs.  Amin’s innings was ended as Pakistan reached 155 runs in the 16th over. The left-hander made 58 runs from 42 balls, striking four boundaries and three sixes.

The Pakistan Champions finished strong, with Shoaib Malik remaining unbeaten on 46 runs off 34 deliveries, which included five fours. Asif Ali added a quickfire 23 runs off just 11 balls, hitting two sixes and two fours, helping his team approach the 200-run mark.

For the South Africa Champions, Dwayne Olivier scalped two wickets, whereas Hardus Viljoen, Wayne Parnell, and JP Duminy picked up one wicket each.

Salman Ali Agha hails team effort after dominant win against Bangladesh

MIRPUR: Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha praised team spirit following a consolatory win in the third T20I against Bangladesh here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

Bangladesh fell short of the 179-run target in the third T20I, eventually bunding out for a modest 104-run total in 16.4 overs. Despite the outcome, the Tigers won the T20I series 2-1 against Pakistan for the first time.

The home side lost half of the side in the powerplay, courtesy of outstanding bowling from Pakistan’s pacer, particularly Salman Mirza, who picked up three wickets.

For Bangladesh, Mohammad Saifuddin was the only silver lining in an otherwise dismal batting display. The all-rounder who returned to the fold after missing out for more than a year remained unbeaten and scored 35* off 34 balls.

For Pakistan, Sahibzada Farhan dazzled with 63 off 41, striking five sixes and six boundaries, while Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Nawaz’s contributions lower down the order propelled them to an imposing total.

Following the match, Salman Agha commented on the team’s performance in the series’ final game.

“Very proud, this is what we talked about as a team, no matter what situation we are in, we want to show character,” he remarked.

The skipper praised Sahibzada Farhan’s performance, who was playing in his first match of the series. He further commented on the individual performances of the players that contributed to Pakistan’s comprehensive win.

“The way Sahibzada batted was outstanding, heartening, and pleasing to see, Saim as well. ´First six overs, they put us ahead.

“Hasan batted really well, and Nawaz played an outstanding cameo. Salman was outstanding, took wickets upfront, and the way Dani (Daniyal) bowled, very happy with them,” Salman Ali Agha concluded.

Fakhar, Abbas make gains as Pakistan players suffer T20I rankings slump

DUBAI: Pakistan T20I players endured a major rankings dip in the latest ICC update released on Wednesday, with only Fakhar Zaman and Abbas Afridi making minor gains amid an otherwise forgettable run in Bangladesh.

The rankings slump comes on the back of Pakistan’s dismal showing in the ongoing three-match T20I series in Mirpur, where the visitors have already lost the first two games of the series.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris, who managed just four runs across both matches, fell 20 spots to 50th with 514 rating points.

Struggling opener Saim Ayub also slipped three places to 64th after scoring just seven runs in two outings.

Middle-order batter Hassan Nawaz, who registered back-to-back ducks, tumbled 22 positions to 68th in the batting charts.

Moreover, skipper Salman Ali Agha’s lean patch continued, with just 12 runs from 32 balls costing him an 18-place drop to 93rd.

Meanwhile, senior batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, both missing the series, dropped one spot each, now placed 13th and 14th respectively.

However, Fakhar Zaman provided a rare bright spot for Pakistan in the ICC T20I batting rankings, climbing eight places to 79th after a composed 44-run knock in the opening game.

In the bowling department, pacer Abbas Afridi, who took three wickets in two matches, slipped two spots to 22nd place with 608 points.

However, he also made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 22 and 19 runs, which allowed him to rise 26 places to 45th in the T20I all-rounders’ rankings.

Haris Rauf, sidelined due to injury, dropped four places to 24th, while Shaheen Afridi, also absent from the squad, fell two places to 36th.

Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed made the biggest leap in the bowling rankings, moving up 12 places to 49th after a steady performance.

Globally, Australia’s Travis Head retained the top spot in T20I batting rankings, with India’s Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma at second and third respectively.

In the bowling rankings, New Zealand’s Jacob Duffy remains No. 1, followed by England’s Adil Rashid and India’s Varun Chakaravarthy.

Bangladesh survive Faheem Ashraf scare to clinch T20I series against Pakistan

MIRPUR: Bangladesh edged past Pakistan by eight runs to seal the T20I series, overcoming a late surge from Faheem Ashraf, whose gritty knock threatened to turn the tide in the second T20I of the three-match series here at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a challenging 134-run total on a tricky surface, Pakistan were bowled out for 125 in 19.2 overs.

With this victory, Bangladesh clinched a T20I series for the first time against Pakistan.

Pakistan started poorly in the chase, losing half of the side in the first five overs. Saim Ayub (1) was run out, followed by Mohammad Haris, who was trapped in front for a golden duck in the second over.

Fakhar Zaman was also removed for eight while Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Nawaz were out without troubling the scorers as the home side reduced Green Shirts for 15-5 in only 4.4 overs.

Following the shambolic batting display from the top order, Salman Ali Agha and Khushdil Shah attempted to stabilize the innings; however, their 15-run partnership took 28 balls, increasing the required run rate.

Pakistan captain Salman Agha perished after a sluggish knock of 9 runs off 23 balls while Khushdil could only manage to score 13 off 18 balls.

With Pakistan at 47-7 in 11.5 overs, Bangladesh’s victory was only a matter of time, until Faheem Ashraf’s resistance with the lower order.

The left-handed batter first forged a 41-run partnership with Abbas Afridi, who managed to score 17 with the aid of two sixes and four, bringing the score to 88 in 16.1 overs.

After Abbas’s removal, he put on another partnership of 33 runs with debutant Ahmed Daniyal. With 28 required off 12 balls, both batters took leg-spinner Rishad Hossain to the cleaners, accumulating 15 runs of the over.

However, Rishad cleaned up Faheem on the last ball to leave the equation at 13 from 6 balls. Ahmed Daniyal smashed a four on the first delivery, but he was out on the very next ball, giving Bangladesh a memorable series-clinching win.

Faheem Ashraf top-scored with 51 off 32 balls, with the help of four boundaries and an equal number of sixes, while Daniyal struck three fours in his valiant 17-run knock.

For Bangladesh, Shoriful Islam was the standout bowler, taking three wickets, while Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mahedi Hasan supported him well with two wickets apiece.

Jaker Ali was named as the player of the match for his impressive knock.

Earlier, all-round bowling effort from Pakistan booked Bangladesh for a meagre total.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh were bowled out for 133 on the last ball of the penultimate over, courtesy of an impressive bowling display from Pakistan.

Pakistan capitalized on the decision to bowl first, removing Bangladesh’s opener Mohammad Naim (3) in only the second over.

The Green Shirts were on the mark in the opening three overs, giving away only 14 runs, which restricted Tigers from scoring big amid the fielding restrictions.

However, Faheem Ashraf’s fourth over leaked 11 runs as Parvez Hossain Emon struck him for a six and four to take Bangladesh to 25-1. Consequently, it was Salman Mirza’s two-wicket fifth over that jolted back the home team.

The left-arm pacer first removed Bangladesh’s skipper Litton Das (8) on the first ball of the over, followed by the removal of Towhid Hridoy, who was run out courtesy of Salman Ali Agha’s direct hit from mid-off.

At the end of the powerplay, Bangladesh were 28-4 with previous match half-centurion Parvez Hossain Emon (13 off 14 deliveries) giving his wicket away.

The early wickets put Bangladesh in dire straits. A similar situation occurred to Pakistan in the opening T20I of the series.

However, a gutsy 53-run partnership between Jaker Ali and Mahedi Hasan lifted Bangladesh out of trouble, bringing the score to 81 in the 13th over.

Mahedi’s 33 off 25 balls featured two sixes and two fours. Following the partnership, the wickets continued to tumble in quick succession.

Meanwhile, Jaker Ali batted till the end, ensuring Bangladesh reached a decent total. His 55-run knock was laced with five sixes and a four.

For Pakistan, it was an all-round bowling effort. Abbas Afridi, Ahmed Daniyal, and Salman Mirza picked up two wickets each while Mohammad Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf managed to scalp one apiece.

The hosts did not get the desired start to their chase as debutant Salman Mirza struck twice in his opening spell to leave them reeling at 7-2 in 2.2 overs.

However, Parvez Hossain Emon and Towhid Hridoy stitched a crucial 73-run stand for the third wicket to put the team in the commanding position.

Pakistan likely to include THIS player in Playing XI for second Bangladesh T20I

MIRPUR: Pakistan team management is likely to make one change to their Playing XI for the second T20I against Bangladesh, scheduled to be played later today at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Reports indicate that left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem may be added to the lineup, potentially replacing either all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz or mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed.

The rest of the team is expected to remain unchanged, despite a poor batting performance in the first T20I, where Pakistan was dismissed for only 110 runs.

This marked the first occasion that Bangladesh had bowled out Pakistan in the shorter format of the game.

Bangladesh successfully chased down the modest target in just 15.3 overs, losing three wickets in the process.
