Lionel Messi to miss Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM

Inter Miami striker Lionel Messi will miss the crucial Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM due to a muscle issue, coach Javier Mascherano said on Tuesday.

The Argentinian striker suffered what Mascherano called a “minor muscle injury” in his upper right leg in Miami’s win over Necaxa last Saturday.

While there is no timetable for Messi’s return, Mascherano was hopeful the star would soon be back on the field.

“Within the bad news, it’s good news,” Mascherano told reporters.

“He usually recovers very well from injuries and, above all, normally does with speed, so we will see. But clearly, for tomorrow, he is unavailable. But then we will see how he feels, how he progresses.”

Lionel Messi, who has a league-best 18 goals in Major League Soccer (MLS) matches this season, led Miami to the Leagues Cup crown in 2023 shortly after his arrival at the Herons.

Inter Miami likely need a victory over Pumas in their group stage finale to reach the quarter-finals of the Leagues Cup, which features MLS and Mexican league squads.

Should Miami reach the knockout stages, Messi would have two weeks to recover before the quarter-finals. Miami’s next MLS match is set for Sunday against Orlando.

Manchester United, Newcastle United make bids for Benjamin Sesko: reports

Premier League sides Manchester United and Newcastle have both placed competing bids for in-demand RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, German tabloid Bild reported Tuesday.

The German tabloid said the Red Devils made an initial bid of 85 million euros (£73.9 million) on Tuesday for the 22-year-old centre forward.

Newcastle had offered a reported 80 million euros for the striker on Saturday, upping that to 85 million with bonuses on Monday.

The Slovenian striker scored 13 goals and laid on five assists in a disappointing league campaign for Leipzig last season. He has scored 16 times in 41 appearances at the international level.

Sesko was stood down from Saturday’s home friendly against Serie A side Atalanta, which the visitors won 2-1, due to a potential transfer.

Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer confirmed this, stating that Sesko would not play “due to the very concrete interests from several clubs.”

Manchester United are rebuilding after their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years, along with defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

United were toothless in attack and have already brought in forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the summer window.

Sesko’s arrival could push under-pressure striker Rasmus Hojlund towards the exit, with reports emerging that United could sell the Denmark forward for 35 million euros, less than half of what they paid to bring him from Atalanta in 2023.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League with a fifth-placed finish last season but are reportedly in danger of losing striker Alexander Isak to Premier League champions Liverpool.

Porto football legend Jorge Costa dies aged 53

Former captain Jorge Costa has died aged 53 after a cardiac arrest at the team’s training ground, Porto announced on Tuesday, paying tribute to “a key figure in the club’s history”.

After his passing, the club released a statement, expressing their sorrow over his loss.

“The legendary FC Porto captain and current director of professional football, passed away this Tuesday following a cardiopulmonary arrest,” the club said in a statement.

The former Portuguese international defender collapsed on Tuesday morning at the club’s training ground.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he died shortly after arriving, according to local media.

Costa spent most of his playing career with the club, winning eight league titles and the Champions League in 2004 under Jose Mourinho. He played 50 times for the Portuguese national team.

He belongs to the golden generation of Portuguese players who won the 1991 Under-20 World Cup, alongside Luis Figo.

“It’s a shock,” Prime Minister Luis Montenegro wrote on social media, hailing Costa as “an example of dedication and commitment”.

Porto’s rivals Benfica and Sporting Lisbon also paid tribute.

“Portuguese football is poorer,” Benfica said in a statement, saluting “a key figure in football and national sport, first as a player, then as a coach, and, more recently, as a manager”.

German club backs out of signing Israel striker after fan backlash

Bundesliga 2 side German Club, Fortuna Duesseldorf has pulled out of signing Israel striker Shon Weissman in response to fan anger about his social media posts on the Gaza war, German tabloid Bild reported Tuesday.

Fan furore erupted online on Monday when news emerged that Weissman was on the cusp of joining Duesseldorf from Spanish side Granada FC.

On Tuesday, the German Club tweeted: “We looked into Shon Weissman intensively, but ultimately decided not to sign him”.

The club did not reveal the reasons for the decision, but Bild reported the club reacted to fan anger about social media statements from Weissman, who was already in Duesseldorf and had completed a medical.

The centre-forward, who has 33 Israel caps, made several social media posts after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that set off the Gaza war.

Bild reported Weissman called for Israel to “wipe Gaza off the map” and to “drop 200 tons of bombs on it”.

The 29-year-old had also liked posts saying “there are no innocents (in Gaza), they don’t need to be warned”.

Weissman, who deleted the posts soon after making them, has since said he made a mistake and was acting in the heat of the moment.

Duesseldorf fans launched an online petition on Monday saying Weissman’s “disrespectful and discriminatory” comments “are in stark contrast to the principles Fortuna stand for and try to promote”.

Weissman has already been the subject of fan protests in Granada, who he joined in January 2023.

Bild reported Duesseldorf and Weissman had planned to issue an apology statement for the posts, which was to be made public after the signing was made official.

The war has previously made an impact on professional football in Germany.

German football fans are heavily involved in major decisions, from signing players to setting fixtures, due to the so-called 50+1 regulation, which requires club members to retain overall control of professional football sides.

Chelsea sign Dutch defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax

Chelsea signed teenage Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal worth a reported £37 million ($49 million) on Sunday.

Hato, who has been capped six times, agreed a seven-year contract with the Premier League club.

The 19-year-old is Chelsea’s eighth signing since the end of last season as boss Enzo Maresca strengthens his squad to cope with the dual demands of the Premier League and Champions League this term.

“I’m very excited, I’m so happy to be here,” said Hato, who can operate in central defence or at left-back.

“I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that, so I’m very happy.”

Hato joined Ajax’s academy from hometown club Sparta Rotterdam in 2018 and signed his first professional contract aged 16, four years later.

He scored four goals in 111 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, with his international debut coming as a substitute against Gibraltar in 2023.

Club World Cup champions Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on August 17.

The Blues had signed Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, Estevao Willian, and Kendry Paez prior to landing Hato.

Lionel Messi out indefinitely with ‘minor muscle injury’: club

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi will be sidelined indefinitely with what the Major League Soccer (MLS) team described as a “minor muscle injury in his right leg” in a statement on Sunday.

The 38-year-old Argentine legend suffered an upper right leg injury early in Miami’s penalty-kicks home win over Mexico’s Necaxa on Saturday in a Leagues Cup match.

Messi went out in the 11th minute but walked off the field and into the locker room.

Messi “underwent medical tests to evaluate the extent of the muscle discomfort he experienced,” which forced him out of the match, Inter Miami said in its statement.

“The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in his right leg. His medical clearance will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment.”

That means there is no timetable for a return by the Miami talisman, who shares the MLS season lead with 18 goals and also has nine assists in 18 matches.

Jordi Alba, who netted an equalizer for Miami in second-half stoppage time to set up the penalty shootout, the hosts won 5-4, said Messi’s early exit was “a huge sadness for the whole team.”

Inter Miami is 12-4 with six drawn for 42 points, fifth in the Eastern Conference and eight points adrift of league pace-setter Philadelphia but with three matches in hand.

Any extended absence would also be a major blow for Miami in the Leagues Cup, which Inter won in 2023 just after Lionel Messi arrived in South Florida.

Miami, which will host UNAM Pumas on Wednesday, ranks second on the MLS table to qualify for the Leagues Cup knockout stage with five points and would clinch a quarter-final berth with a victory.

Lionel Messi exits early with injury in Miami’s Leagues Cup win

Lionel Messi suffered an injury and was removed in the 11th minute of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup penalty kicks victory over Mexico’s Necaxa on Saturday at Fort Lauderdale’s Chase Stadium.

The 38-year-old Argentine superstar forward appeared to be having treatment on his upper right leg or groin before making his exit under his own power and walking to the locker room.

But after a 5-4 triumph in penalties after a 2-2 draw, Miami coach Javier Mascherano said it would be Sunday before the exact details of the injury and the severity of the setback would be known.

“Well, he felt discomfort, and we will not be able to know until tomorrow how severe the injury is,” Mascherano said after the match.

“There’s probably something there. Maybe not as important, because he was really not in pain. But he did feel a pull.”

Messi took the ball and dribbled into the Necaxa back line, but he stumbled at the top of the box and ran into Necaxa defender Alexis Pena then tumbled to the ground, pounding the pitch in frustration as the ball was cleared away.

Moments later, Herons’s captain Messi was alone near midfield on the left wing by himself when he went to the ground in a seated position, lying on his back briefly until trainers arrived.

Mascherano elected to send in Federico Redondo to replace Messi.

Inter Miami won 5-4 on penalties after the 10-man teams played to a 2-2 draw after full time.

Argentine striker Tomas Badaloni was denied on the decisive penalty kick in the third round of the shootout while Rodrigo De Paul, Ben Cremaschi, Jordi Alba, Redondo, and Luis Suarez hit penalties for Miami, Uruguayan striker Suarez getting the decider on the last kick.

Inter Miami Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia scored in the 12th minute, but Herons defender Maximiliano Falcon of Uruguay was shown a red card in the 17th minute.

Badaloni netted the equalizer for Necaxa in the 33rd minute to lift the visitors level at half-time, and Necaxa was cut to 10 men as well when Cristian Calderon received a red card in the 60th minute.

Ricardo Monreal, who came off the Necaxa bench in the 74th minute, scored in the 81st to put the Mexican side ahead only for Spain’s Alba to net the equalizer for Miami in the second minute of stoppage time.

During Argentine World Cup qualifiers in March, Messi was nagged by thigh strain issues.

Messi has scored 18 goals and assisted on nine others in 18 MLS appearances this season.

He assisted on both Inter Miami goals in a 2-1 victory over Atlas on Wednesday in their opener in the Leagues Cup, a tournament involving MLS and Mexican League squads.

Miami concludes group stage play in the event on Wednesday against Pumas.

Messi led Inter Miami to the inaugural Leagues Cup crown in 2023 just after his arrival with the MLS club.

Pep Guardiola drops major hint about retirement plans

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has opened up about his retirement plans, revealing that he intends to step away from managerial duties after leaving the club.

However, the 54-year-old, who signed a contract extension in November last year, which will now last until 2027, remarked that the decision could take up to 15 years.

His role came under scrutiny after Manchester City’s challenging season. For the first time since Guardiola took the position in 2016, the club finished without any trophies.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has made similar statements in the past about his retirement.

“I don’t know. The truth is, I don’t know, but I don’t think I’m… I don’t know, because you can also have large work groups that help you with certain things,” he said.

“I know that after this spell with City I’m going to stop, that’s for sure, it’s decided, more than agreed,” he added.

Pep Guardiola further mentioned the challenges he face on daily basis as Manchester City manager, noting that no other profession comes under so much scrutiny.

“I’ve spent four or five months this year in every away stadium with the crowd chanting, ‘You’ll be sacked in the morning. They’re going to fire you’,” Guardiola said.

“There’s no other profession, architect, teacher, doctor, journalist… where 60,000 people ask you to lose your job.

“When you win six Premier Leagues, there comes a time when you go down. It’s human nature … it’s a process that had to happen, it happens, it took longer to happen, and when it did, it went deeper than we could have imagined,” Pep Guardiola concluded.

For the unversed, the Spaniard is the most successful manager in the Club’s history, having won 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Bayern Munich agree deal to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz: reports

German champions Bayern Munich have agreed to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in a £65.5 million ($88 million) deal, according to multiple reports on Sunday.

Bayern had an initial offer of £59 million rejected by the Premier League champions last week, but their improved bid looks set to bring the Colombia international to the Allianz Arena.

Diaz has reportedly been given permission to leave Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia in order to complete a medical with Bayern.

He joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 and won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup during his time at Anfield.

The 28-year-old made 50 appearances and scored 17 goals in all competitions last season as Arne Slot’s team clinched the English title for the first time in five years.

Luis Diaz was left out of Liverpool’s 4-2 friendly defeat against AC Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday as speculation mounted over his future.

“In Lucho’s (Diaz’s) situation, there’s a lot of rumours around him lately, and I cannot go into that,” Slot said after the Milan match.

“He’s training really well with us, but we have decided for now not to play him yet.

“I’m used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.”

The decision to sign Luis Diaz gives Bayern Munich a quality replacement for Germany forward Jamal Musiala, who has been ruled out for a “long period” after he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup this month.

Liverpool have been busy in the transfer window, bolstering their attacking options with expensive swoops for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.

Defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez arrived from Leverkusen and Bournemouth, respectively, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joined from Valencia.

The Reds are also believed to be interested in making a bid for Newcastle’s £150 million-rated striker Alexander Isak.
