Asalanka, Rajapaksa lead Sri Lanka to winning start in T20 World Cup

SHARJAH: Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa snatched the match from the jaws of Bangladesh and led Sri Lanka to a winning start in T20 World Cup 2021. 

Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Naim scored 73 runs together as Bangladesh posted 171-4 in 20 overs against Sri Lanka in their first match of T20 World Cup.

Bangladeshi openers Mohammad Naim and Liton Das started off well for their team after they were asked to bat first in the third match of the mega event. They scored 40 runs together before Lahiru Kumara struck Das in the sixth over.

Shakib Al Hasan lost his wicket to Chamika Karunaratne after scoring 10 and Bangladesh suffered at 56-2.

Thereon, Mushfiqur and Rahim took the responsibility and supported their team in setting the target. Mushfiqur remained not out for 57 off 37 laced with five boundaries and two sixes whereas Naim contributed 62 runs smoked with six boundaries.

For Sri Lanka, Karunaratne, Kumara and Binura Fernando shared a wicket apiece.

Sri Lanka have won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first in their first match of T20 World Cup here on Sunday.

England beat West Indies by six wickets in second T20 World Cup match

DUBAI: England beat West Indies by six wickets in the second game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Eoin Morgan-led side successfully chased the 56-run target in overs with the loss of four wickets.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler was the top scorer as he remained not out for 22-ball 24 with three fours to his name. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow made 11 and nine runs respectively.

Akeal Hosein took two wickets and conceded 24 runs in his allotted four overs while Ravi Rampaul got a wicket as well.

England had won the toss and invited West Indies to bat.

The defending champions put on a dismal batting performance and were dismissed for just 55 runs in 14.2 overs. Chris Gayle was the only batsman to score in double figures with 13 from nine deliveries with three boundaries to his name.

Spinner Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. Moeen Ali and Tymal Mills took two wickets each.

Australia win T20 WC’s opener after last over run-chase

ABU DHABI: South African bowlers tried hard but Australia chased 119 in last over with five wickets in hand to win opening match of T20 World Cup here at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium on Saturday. 

Set to chase 119, Australia lost their captain Aaron Finch who walked off without scoring. It was not too late when two other batters, David Warner (14) and Mitchel Marsh (11), went back to the hut, leaving Australia suffering at 38-3.

Steven Smith carried the innings from there and stayed at the crease to support his team in the run-chase. He scored 35 runs off 34 balls before Aiden Markram’s spectacular catch at the ropes forced him to leave the field. His inning included three boundaries.

Marcus Stoinis (24*) and Matthew Wade (15*) added valuable 38 runs to take Australia over the victory line.

Anrich Nortje bagged two wickets for South Africa whereas Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi shared a wicket each.

Earlier, Australia grabbed South Africa at 118-9 in 20 overs.

Asked to bat first, South Africa were bamboozled by Australian bowlers as they kept losing wickets after regular intervals. Skipper Temba Bavuma started off aggressively with back-to-back boundaries but Glenn Maxwell bowled him to provide early breakthrough to Australia.

Markram looked in good touch but wickets tumbling at the other hand put pressure on him. He played steadily but managed to score just 40 runs off 36 balls laced with three boundaries and a six.

Rabada, in the end, played a handy knock of 20 runs with the help of a boundary and six.

For Australia, Mitchel Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa bagged two wickets each while Maxwell and Pat Cummins took a scalp each.

T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka thrash Netherlands by eight wickets

SHARJAH: Sri Lanka registered a massive eight-wicket win over Netherlands in the last Qualifying Round match of the T20 World Cup played here at Sharjah on Friday.

Batting first, Netherlands have set a 45-run target for Sri Lanka in the final round-one match of the Twenty20 World Cup.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost two wickets before Kusal Perera, on 33, and Avishka Fernando, on two, steered the team home in 7.1 overs.

With this win, Sri Lanka moved into the Super 12 stage with three wins and top of their group. Sri Lanka joins England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and Bangladesh in Group 1 of the Super 12s.

Netherlands’ innings

Asked to bat first, the Netherlands had a horrible start with Sir Lankan bowlers Lahiru Kumara and Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva removing the top six batters for just 37 runs.

Leg spinner Wanindu Hasranga and seamer Lahiru Kumara picked three wickets each as Netherlands all out for 44 runs in just 10 overs.

By the end of the fifth over, the Netherlands had half their side back in the hut.

Kumara returned to clean up the tail and claim T20 best figures of 3-7 with his pace bowling.

The Dutch were bowled out for 39 in a T20 World Cup match against Sri Lanka in 2014.

Earlier, Sri Lanka have decided to field first after winning the toss against the Netherlands in last Qualifying Round match of the T20 World Cup.

Remember, Sri Lanka have already qualified for the mega event from Group A. The other three qualifiers are Namibia, Bangladesh and Scotland. T20 World Cup’s Super 12s event is scheduled to start tomorrow.

Namibia make it to T20 World Cup for the first time after defeating Ireland

SHARJAH: Gerhard Erasmus remained not out for 53 as Namibia beat Ireland by eight wickets to book their maiden ticket to T20 World Cup. 

Set to chase 126 in 20 overs, Namibia’s batter stood firm and calm during the run-chase. Despite losing a quick wicket of opener Craig Williams, Namibia’s middle-order kept things going for their team.

Erasmus stood out exceptionally well and scored 53 runs off 49 balls laced with three boundaries and a six. David Wiese supported him strongly and scored 28 off 14 balls including two sixes and a boundary. They both spent quality time at the crease and added match-winning 53 runs.

Earlier, Ireland fell apart despite a good opening start as Namibia restricted them to 125-8 in their last Qualifying Round match of T20 World Cup.

Ireland’s openers Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien provided a solid start to their team with 62-runs stand. But, their wickets put Ireland in deep trouble as they started losing wickets after regular intervals.

Stirling’s power-packed knock including five boundaries and a six helped him score 38 off 24 balls whereas O’Brien made 25 with the help of two boundaries. Skipper Andy Balbirnie contributed 21 runs but no other batter even entered double figures.

Jan Frylinck bagged three wickets followed by Wiese with two scalps and JJ Smit and Bernard Scholtz with a wicket each.

Scotland cement place in Pakistan’s group after easy win over Oman

Al Amerat: Scotland have claimed an easy eight-wicket win over Oman in the 10th match of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as they chased down the target of 123 in 17 overs.

Scotland and Bangladesh are the two teams, who have qualified for Super 12s stage as they finished first and second respectively in Group B of Round 1.

Opt to bat first, Oman were wrapped up for only 122. Skipper Zeeshan Maqsood was the only notable batter for Oman, scoring 34. Mohammad Nadeem made 24 while no other batters entered into the double figures.

Pacer Josh Davey bagged three wickets while Safyan Sharif and Michael Leask took two wickets each.

In return, Scotland skipper Kyle Coetzer hit 41 off 28. Matthew Cross and Richie Berrington cruised the run chase with scores of 26* and 31* respectively.

Earlier, Bangladesh guaranteed their qualification from this group after claiming 84-run win over Papua New Guinea.

Shakib takes Bangladesh to T20 World Cup’s Super 12

AL AMERAT: Shakib Al Hasan showed all-round performance as Bangladesh beat Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 84 runs to qualify for T20 World Cup’s Super 12 stage. 

Shakib bagged four wickets for just nine runs to help Bangladesh bowl out PNG for 97. Mohammad Saifuddin and Taskin Ahmed bagged two wickets each for Bangladesh.

Kiplin Doriga scored highest 46 runs off 34 balls with the help of two boundaries and as many sixes for PNG.

Earlier, Mahmudullah set the tone for Bangladesh despite exceptional fielding by Papua New Guinea (PNG) as they scored 181-7 in their last qualifying round match in T20 World Cup.

A good fielding display by PNG helped them take a couple of quick wickets but Mahmudullah stood firm and scored 50 runs off 28 balls with the help of three boundaries and as many maximums.

Experienced Shakib Al Hasan made 46 off 37 balls with the help of three boundaries. Mohammad Saifuddin struck quick 21 runs including a boundary and two sixes to race Bangladesh’s score to 181 for the loss of seven wickets.

For PNG, Kabua Morea, Damien Ravu, and Assad Vala bagged two wickets each whilst Simon Atai managed to take a scalp.

Sri Lanka qualify for Super 12s stage with 70-run win over Ireland

Abu Dhabi: Sri Lanka have qualified for the ICC T20 World Cup Super 12s stage with a 70-run win over Ireland here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The Lankans wrapped up Ireland’s innings for 101 while defending 172. Ireland will now face Namibia on October 20. The winner of this match will become the second team to make it through in the next stage from this group.

Earlier, Wanindu Hasaranga and Pathum Nissanka hit half-centuries to help Sri Lanka post 171-7 after early setbacks.

Invited to bat in the first-round match, Sri Lanka were in trouble at 8-3 in the second over when Hasaranga (71) and Nissanka (61) put on key stand of 123 in Abu Dhabi.

Paul Stirling claimed the wicket of Kusal Perera for nought on the second ball of the innings and soon Joshua Little took two in two to send back Dinesh Chandimal and Avishka Fernando.

Hasaranga, an allrounder who bowls leg-spin, took the attack to the opposition with four straight boundaries off spinner Simi Singh to lay the foundation for Sri Lanka’s challenging total.

He raised his maiden T20 international fifty in 38 balls and kept up the charge to punish the Ireland bowlers, including a towering six before falling to Mark Adair.

Nissanka was equally efficient and also recorded his first fifty in the shortest international format as he hit six fours and one six in his 47-ball knock.

Little returned impressive figures of 4-23 — his T20 best — including Nissanka’s scalp from his four overs of left-arm pace.

Adair claimed his 50th T20I wicket before Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka finished the innings with a six and a four in his unbeaten 21 off 11 balls.

In return, Sri Lankan bowlers, led by spinner Maheesh Theekshana, completely bamboozled Irish batting. He returned figures of 3-17 while Lahiru Kumara and Chamika Karunaratne claimed two wickets each.

Ireland skipper Andre Balbirnie contributed 41 off 39 while Curtis Campher made 24 off 28 balls. Hasaranga was awarded player of the match for scoring 71 and claiming one wicket.

Wiese leads Namibia to emphatic six-wicket win over Netherlands

Abu Dhabi: Namibia have stunned the Netherlands by six wickets as they chased a 165-run target in 19 overs here in the seventh match of the T20 World Cup at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.

The Netherlands are now knocked out of the competition while Namibia keep their hopes alive for the next stage.

David Wiese, who represented South Africa in the last T20 World Cup in India, led the chase for Namibia after they lost three wickets for 52 runs. Wiese partnered with skipper Gerhard Erasmus and added 93 runs for fourth wicket.

At the back-end, JJ Smit steered Namibia to the run chase with eight-ball 14. Wiese remained unbeaten 66 off 40 balls while Erasmus made 22-ball 32.

Earlier, Max O’Dowd starred with a knock of 70, leading the Netherlands to 164/4 in 20 overs after Namibia opted to bowl first.

Put in to bat first, Netherlands’ openers put up a 42-run stand. Stephan Mybhurg (17) was the first man to depart.

O’Dowd continued to anchor the innings with other batters. Colin Ackerman contributed 35 off 32 balls while Scott Edward made 21 off just 11 balss.

O’Dowd was run-out in the final over. He smacked six fours and one maximum in 56-ball innings. For Namibia, Jan Frylinch claimed figures of 2/36 while David Wiese bagged a wicket.
