PAK vs NZ ODI: Fakhar Zaman marathon knock scripts Pakistan’s triumph

RAWALPINDI: In-form Fakhar Zaman’s record-breaking 180-run knock bolstered Pakistan to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second PAK vs NZ ODI of the five-match series here at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Set to chase a mammoth 337, Pakistan comfortably amassed the total in the 49th over for the loss of just three wickets at the back of an astounding 180-run knock by Fakhar Zaman.

Earlier, Pakistan’s dependable opening pair of Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq failed to give their side a solid start this time as the latter perished cheaply in the 10th over after scoring 24 off 26.

Following an early setback, Pakistan captain Babar Azam joined Fakhar in the middle and retained Pakistan’s command with a solid 135-run partnership for the second wicket.

The pair looked to have settled down with Fakhar scoring a century while Babar followed it up with a half-century until the latter misread Ish Sodhi’s regulation leg-spinner in the 30th over and saw the end of his vital knock.

Babar smashed five boundaries and a six on his way to a 66-ball 65.

The home side then dealt another blow within the next four overs as Abdullah Shafique (1) fell victim to Henry Shipley.

The back-to-back setbacks did not bother Fakhar much as he then stitched an unbeaten 119-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan and denied New Zealand a late comeback.

Fakhar was the star performer for Pakistan with his incredible 180-run knock in just 144 deliveries, which featured 17 boundaries and six sixes.

Rizwan also supported him well with a magnificent half-century; scoring an unbeaten 54 in 41 balls with the help of six boundaries.

For New Zealand, Matt Henry, Shipley and Sodhi could pick up a wicket.

Put into bat first in the second PAK vs NZ ODI, New Zealand piled a mammoth 336/5 in their set of 50 overs at the back of a brilliant century and 98 by Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham respectively.

Earlier, the touring side got off to a cautious start as their in-form opener Will Young perished early in the sixth after scoring 19.

Following an early hiccup, a strong second-wicket partnership between Mitchell and Chad Bowes put New Zealand in control as the pair raised 86 runs in just 80 deliveries before Haris Rauf struck again to dismiss the latter soon after his maiden half-century.

Bowes smashed seven boundaries on his way to a run-a-ball 51.

Mitchell then received massive support from his skipper Tom Latham and they stitched a marathon 183-run partnership for the third wicket before Naseem Shah got the danger man Mitchell in the 46th over with a slower delivery.

Mitchell top-scored for New Zealand with a 119-ball 129, laced up with eight boundaries and three sixes.

Latham’s stay at the crease remained brief after Mitchell’s dismissal as the left-handed batter fell victim to Haris Rauf in the next over; missing his well-deserved century by just two runs.

He scored 98 off just 85 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and a six.

Some vital contributions from James Neesham’s (17*) and Henry Nicholls (6*) made sure New Zealand finished at a commendable total.

Haris Rauf led the bowling attack for Pakistan with 4/78 while Naseem could pick up a wicket.

Iftikhar Ahmed replaces Haris Sohail in Pakistan’s ODI squad

LAHORE: In-form all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed replaced injured Haris Sohail in Pakistan’s ODI squad for the last three PAK vs NZ ODI matches in Karachi, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Saturday.

According to the details, left-arm middle-order batter Haris Sohail, who succumbed to an injury amid the team’s scheduled practice session ahead of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, has been replaced by in-form all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed.

Notably, Haris suffered a nasty collision with his teammate Shadab Khan in the training session and landed awkwardly on his left shoulder.

The batter was then taken to a local hospital in Rawalpindi and underwent scans.

“Pakistan batter Haris Sohail landed awkwardly on his left shoulder during a fielding drill today,” stated PCB in a statement.

“His initial scans at a local hospital were satisfactory. The medical team will assess him before the first One-Day International tomorrow to determine his participation in the match,” the statement added.

Following his inclusion in the ODI squad, Iftikhar will join the national contingent in Karachi, where the last three fixtures of the PAK vs NZ ODI series will be played on May 3, 5 and 7.

A sensational bowling performance by young pacer Naseem Shah and a magnificent century in the run chase by Fakhar Zaman propelled the home side to a resounding five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI to script a winning start to the series.

With the ICC ODI World Cup scheduled this year in India, the series provide a launching pad for the two teams to begin their preparations for the megaevent.

Pakistan ODI Squad: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Ihsanullah, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Haris, Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Usama Mir, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Shan Masood and Mohammad Wasim Jnr.

Ihsanullah makes debut in second PAK vs NZ ODI

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s pace prodigy Ihsanullah to make his maiden appearance for the Green Shirts in the second PAK vs NZ ODI of the five-match series here at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Ihsanullah, who made headlines in his debut Pakistan Super League (PSL) season, continued to get the reward for his exceptional skills and performance.

Following a sensational season with the ball in the marquee league, the lanky pacer first received a maiden T20 call-up for the three-match away series against Afghanistan, which mainly comprised of the youngsters as the senior players were given rest.

The right-arm speedster impressed in his debut T20I series, propelling him to be retained in the T20I squad while receiving a maiden ODI call-up.

Meanwhile, for the second PAK vs NZ ODI of the five-match, he has been added to the Playing XI in place of ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi and is set to make his ODI debut.

Besides him, the green shirts made two more changes to their lineup as Abdullah Shafique replaced Shan Masood, while Usama Mir came in for Shadab Khan.

Taking to Twitter, the PCB shared the footage of Shaheen presenting the young pacer with the Pakistan cap.

It is worth mentioning here that the second ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand is underway here at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam put the touring side into bat first after the coin once again flipped in his favour.

The home side lead the five-match series 1-0 with four games to spare.

The first PAK vs NZ ODI took place on Thursday at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, won the toss and chose to bowl first.

New Zealand batted first and managed to post a respectable total on the scoreboard, thanks to outstanding performances by Daryl Mitchell and Will Young, who scored a century and a half-century respectively.

Mitchell scored an impressive 113 runs off 115 balls, including 11 boundaries and a six. Meanwhile, Young contributed 86 runs off just 78 deliveries, featuring eight boundaries and two sixes.

However, the target set by New Zealand proved inadequate for their bowlers to defend against Pakistan’s dominant openers, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq.

Fakhar Zaman continued his exceptional form, scoring his second consecutive century and emerging as Pakistan’s highest scorer in the chase. He accumulated 117 runs off 114 balls, hitting 13 boundaries and a six.

On the other hand, Imam scored 60 runs off 65 deliveries, with five boundaries and a maximum. Pakistan’s commanding performance resulted in a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first match of the PAK vs NZ ODI series.

This win marked Pakistan’s 500th international victory in the 50-Overs format, achieved in their 949th ODI fixture. Pakistan became the third team, after India and Australia, to reach this milestone.

Interestingly, this significant victory came against the same team with whom Pakistan played their inaugural limited-overs match in 1973. Along the way, the Men in Green also secured an ODI World Cup title in 1992, led by Imran Khan as captain.

The two teams will now face each other in the second match of the five-match ODI series at the same venue on April 29 before the action moves to the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi, where the remaining three ODIs will take place.

PAK vs NZ: Fakhar credits ‘confident’ Imam for his excellence in ODI format

RAWALPINDI: Imperious Fakhar Zaman heaped praises on Imam-ul-Haq and credited his opener partner for instilling confidence in him after Pakistan thrashed New Zealand in the first PAK vs NZ ODI, here on Thursday.

Fakhar smashed a magnificent century to help Pakistan seal a convincing five-wicket win against New Zealand in the opening ODI of the five-game series here at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Set to chase 289, the dependable opening pair of Imam and Fakhar laid a solid foundation for the Green Shirts as they raised 124 runs with both scoring half-centuries.

Imam, however, failed to convert his 15th ODI fifty into a century as he fell victim to Ish Sodhi in the 22nd over. He scored 60 off 65 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and a six.

However, Fakhar continued to dominate Kiwi bowlers and went on to score his ninth ODI hundred. He played a match-winning knock of 114-ball 117 with the help of 13 fours and a maximum.

“I’ve never seen a player as confident as Imam,” said Fakhar in a post-match interview shared by PCB on Twitter.

“I feel very comfortable batting with Imam. He is well-groomed as a batsman and I get the confidence from him” he added.

Imam, on the other hand, also spoke highly of his teammate, stating, “The way Fakhar is taking the responsibility, he will play an important role for us in the World Cup.”

“We both were trying to keep each other awake, in case one of us goes into his shell. And Fakhar helped a lot with this.”

“It matters a lot how your partner gives you the confidence,” he added.

It must be noted here that the Fakhar-Imam duo is one of Pakistan’s most successful opening pairs in history, having seven hundred-run stands including an all-time opening partnership record of 304 runs

With a 1-0 lead in the series, Pakistan will now take on the visitors in the second fixture at the same venue on April 29 before the action shifts to National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi, which will host the remaining three ODIs on May 3, 5 and 7.

Pakistan record landmark victory in first PAK vs NZ ODI

RAWALPINDI: Imperious Pakistan thrashed New Zealand by five wickets in the first match PAK vs NZ ODI series to record the national team’s 500th international win in the 50-Overs format, here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

The Green Shirts achieved the milestone in 949 ODI fixtures, becoming the third team after India and Australia to win 500 One-Day international matches.

Surprisingly, the landmark victory came against the side with whom Pakistan played their first limited-overs match back in 1973. On their way to this glaring feat, the Men in Green also won an ODI World Cup in 1992 under the captaincy of Imran Khan.

Out of their 500 ODI wins, Pakistan won 73 against arch-rivals India, 92 matches against Sri Lanka, 63 against West Indies, 57 against New Zealand, 54 against Zimbabwe, 34 against Australia, and 32 against England and Bangladesh each.

The national team has also won six ODIs against Kenya, four against Afghanistan, two against Canada, three against Hong Kong, five against Ireland and three against UAE.

With the win, Pakistan scripted a winning start to the five-match series against the visitors thanks to Fakhar Zaman’s magnificent century.

The left-hander scored 117 in 114 deliveries with the help of 13 boundaries and a six to steer Pakistan into command.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam opted to bowl first after the coin flipped in his favour. New Zealand, batting first, put up a decent total on the scoreboard at the back of a brilliant century and half-century by Daryl Mitchell and Will Young respectively.

Mitchell smashed 11 boundaries and a six on his way to top score for New Zealand with a 115-ball 113.

On the other hand, Young scored 86 off just 78 deliveries, laced up with eight boundaries and two sixes.

The target set by New Zealand eventually proved insufficient for their bowlers to defend at the back of resounding knocks by their openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq, besides skipper Babar and wicket-keeper batter Rizwan also chipping with useful contributions.

The two sides will now take on each other in the second fixture of the five-match ODI series at the same venue on April 29 before the action shifts to National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi, which will host the remaining three ODIs on May 3, 5 and 7.

The record-breaking performance by Naseem earned him high praise from cricket fans and experts around the world. His’s phenomenal bowling performance restricted New Zealand to 288 runs despite Daryl Mitchell’s century.

After Naseem’s brilliance, it was Fakhar Zaman’s show, who scored his second-consecutive century against New Zealand and powered the home side to a resounding five-wicket victory over the touring side.

The left-handed batter topped the scoring chart for Pakistan with a monumental 117-run knock in just 113 deliveries which featured 13 boundaries and a six.

His opening partner Imam-ul-Haq also played a pivotal role in his team’s triumph with his calculated 60-run knock and laid a solid foundation by stitching a magnificent 124-run partnership with Fakhar.
