PAK v NZ: Imad rates Babar’s knock ‘top of the line’

LAHORE: All-rounder Imad Wasim heaped praise on captain Babar Azam after the latter smashed a phenomenal ton during Pakistan’s 38-run victory in the second T20 international against New Zealand on Saturday in Lahore.

Babar scored 101 runs from 58 balls, marking his third century in the shortest format, to help his side take a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.

In a post-match interview with Babar Azam, Imad called the right-hander ‘the best player in the world’ right now.

“I have seen many innings but this was at the top of the line in my opinion, especially the way he [Babar] carried on after we lost three wickets. The wicket was holding as well. But the way he played was simply brilliant.” he said,

“There’s no doubt that he’s the best player in the world,” he remarked

Meanwhile, centurion Babar attributed the positive mindset as a key factor for his consistency with the bat.

“I try to improve my game day-by-day and play according to the situation,” said Pakistan skipper

“We were on a comfortable stage at the first 10 overs but I have to hold a little bit after back-to-back wickets”

“However, after playing one good over we got the momentum and I felt that we can score 190 or even 200 from there onward,” he said without mentioning any particular over as Pakistan scored overall 46 runs in the last four overs to reach a massive 192-run total.

New Zealand in reply, could only amass 154/7 in their quota of 20 overs thanks to Haris Rauf’s consecutive four-for in two matches.

Pakistan next play the tourists on April 17 at the same venue before the final two matches in Rawalpindi on April 20 and 24.

PAK vs NZ T20I: Babar ton aids Pakistan to thump New Zealand

LAHORE: Pakistan captain Babar Azam smashed an unbeaten century before Haris Rauf’s four-for stormed the hosts to a dominating 38-run victory over New Zealand in the second PAK vs NZ T20I at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Set to chase 193, New Zealand could only amass 154/7 in their quota of 20 overs despite Mark Chapman’s half-century.

The touring side started off cautiously as their openers Tom Latham and Chad Bowes added 44 runs before spin did the trick for Babar-led Pakistan.

Shadab Khan trapped Latham (19) in his legs in the seventh over to draw first success for Pakistan while Imad struck out Bowes (26) in the next over to further dent New Zealand’s march.

Chapman then looked to soak in the pressure and stitched a fighting 33-run partnership with Will Young before Haris Rauf joined the party and dismissed the latter, who could score a mere nine.

The touring side kept losing wickets at regular intervals while Chapman held his ground firm with a valiant half-century and carried his bat all the way through.

His grit, however, turned out insufficient as the hosts halted New Zealand to 154/7 and thus claimed a comfortable 38-run victory.

He top-scored for New Zealand with a fighting 40-ball 65, which featured four boundaries and four sixes.

Haris was once again sensational with the ball for Pakistan as he bagged 4/27 while Imad, Shadab, Zaman Khan and Faheem Ashraf struck out a batter each.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan managed to accumulate a massive total on the scoreboard at the back of an unbeaten century by their skipper Babar Azam and a brisk half-century by Rizwan.

Earlier, the opening duo, once again scripted a solid start for the home side; raising 99 runs for the first wicket before Rizwan fell briefly after amassing his half-century in PAK vs NZ second T20I.

Matt Henry, who tested Pakistan openers in the early phase of the innings, finally tested success in his second spell as he outdid Rizwan, who miscued one straight to Daryl Mitchel at mid-off in the 11th over.

He scored 50 off just 34 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and a six.

Rizwan’s dismissal filled New Zealand with momentum as their bowlers made three more quick strikes to produce a brilliant comeback in the middle phase.

However, Babar held his ground firm and stitched a valiant 87-run unbeaten partnership with Iftikhar Ahmed to get his side back on track for a massive total.

Iftikhar supported his skipper with a sensible 19-ball 33 while Babar, switched gears at the death to bring up his third T20I century.

He top-scored for his side with an unbeaten 101 off just 58 deliveries, laced up with 11 boundaries and three sixes.

For New Zealand, Henry led the way with two wickets while Rachin Ravindra and James Neesham made one scalp each.

PAK vs NZ: Haris, Saim lead Pakistan to thrash New Zealand in first T20I

LAHORE: Left-handed batter Saim Ayub scored a quickfire 47 before Haris Rauf’s four-for propelled Pakistan to a resounding 88-run victory over New Zealand in the first T20I of the five-match series here at Gaddafi Stadium.

Set to chase 183, the New Zealand batting lineup failed completely and bundled out for a meagre 94 runs in the 15th over and hence handed a dominating victory to Pakistan.

Pakistan’s pacers forced a deplorable start to New Zealand’s pursuit as they picked up three quick wickets to leave the touring side reeling for just 29 runs inside the batting powerplay.

Following the slump, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham and Mark Chapman looked to settle things as they stitched a gritty 27-run partnership before Haris Rauf broke the budding partnership by dismissing Latham, who could score 20 off 24.

Chapman looked to counterattack by taking Shadab Khan to the cleaners after Latham’s dismissal but his domination was shortlived as he perished in the same over.

He top-scored for New Zealand with a 27-ball 34, which featured four boundaries and a six.

Pakistan’s bowlers then came out roaring after Chapman’s dismissal and soon bundled out the touring side for a modest total; showcasing a combined effort.

Haris led the bowling attack for Pakistan with 4/18 while Imad bagged two. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Zaman Khan, Shadab and Faheem Ashraf, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan managed to accumulate 182 at the back of an anchoring and quickfire knock by Fakhar and Saim respectively.

Earlier, the home side got off to a dismal start as their dependable opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan perished cheaply.

New Zealand’s right-arm speedster Adam Milne trapped Rizwan (8) with a couple of out-swingers before hitting his pads plumb to draw the first success for New Zealand in the second over.

The right-arm pacer kept using his pace to pose threats to the host’s batters and eventually claimed the prized scalp of skipper Babar Azam; castling the latter on seven.

With Pakistan reeling at 30/2 in the fifth over, Fakhar and Saim turned the tables on the touring side and stitched a valiant 79-run partnership to anchor the innings.

Saim was the core aggressor of the stand while Fakhar was holding his ground firm before a direct hit by Chad Bowes saw the end of the former’s brisk knock. Saim fell just three short of his half-century; scoring 47 off just 28 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and two sixes.

His dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse which resulted in Pakistan slipping to 131/6 with Fakhar being the latest to walk back. He remained the joint top-scorer for the home side as he too, scored 47 runs in 34 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and two sixes.

All-rounders Imad Wasim (16) and Faheem Ashraf (22) made vital contributions with the bat while Haris Rauf’s astonishing cameo of 11 runs at the backend bolstered Pakistan to a decent total.

Matt Henry led the bowling attack for New Zealand with a hat-trick while Adam Milne and Ben Lister picked up two wickets each.
