Naqvi confirms action against players withdrawing from PSL

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has decided to take legal action against players who pulled out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11.

Naqvi addressed the issue regarding players leaving PSL to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

“We are aware that two to three players have left, and we are taking legal action regarding this,” he told reporters during a press conference.

“However, if you look at previous years and this year, as well as last year, the number of Category A players coming from regions with tensions has remained steady,” he maintained.

The chairman highlighted the players’ pool while downplaying the clash with IPL.

“Players who had never participated before have also started coming, and the IPL clash is not a major reason for us.”

“If all the top players are going there, we are also seeing good players coming to us,” Mohsin Naqvi explained.

It is worth mentioning that this will be the second consecutive year that the PSL will run concurrently with the IPL in a parallel window.

Earlier today, Lahore Qalandars bought Dasun Shanaka pulled out of PSL 11 to play in the IPL. The all-rounder replaced injured Sam Curran in the Rajasthan Royals.

Besides Shanaka, Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani has also joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Muzarabani went unsold in the PSL 11 auction but was later picked by Islamabad United as a replacement for Shamar Joseph.

However, after an impressive ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, he was roped in by the KKR.

PSL 11 will be played from March 26 behind closed doors at two venues, Lahore and Karachi.

The opening match will be played between the defending champions Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Dasun Shanaka set to leave PSL for IPL move

Dasun Shanaka is set to play for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 despite being bought by Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 auction.

According to Cricinfo, the all-rounder has informed the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 franchise Lahore Qalandars about the decision with the formalities of the move being completed.

Shanaka was bought by Qalandars for PKR 75 lakh in the auction held earlier this year.

Sri Lanka’s T20I captain will become the second player, after Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani, to leave PSL and play in the IPL.

Muzarabani went unsold in the PSL 11 auction but was later picked by Islamabad United as a replacement for Shamar Joseph.

However, after an impressive ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, he was roped in by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Earlier today, it was announced that PSL 11 will be held behind closed doors and at fewer venues.

Originally, six cities, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Peshawar, were scheduled to host matches in the expanded eight-team edition.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi revealed the decision during a press conference on Sunday, citing ongoing geopolitical tensions and an emerging oil crisis as key factors behind the move.

“After consultations with the Prime Minister and security agencies, we have decided that the PSL will begin on March 26 as planned,” Naqvi stated.

“Initially, matches will be held without crowds, and this will continue depending on the global situation.”

Naqvi also confirmed that the opening ceremony of the tournament has been cancelled, with PSL set to begin directly with the opening match on March 26.

“The opening ceremony of the league has been cancelled,” he said, adding, “The tournament will begin directly with the match.”

For those unaware, defending champions Lahore Qalandars are scheduled to face Hyderabad Kingsmen at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium in the curtain-raiser.

PSL 11 to take place at two venues without crowds: Mohsin Naqvi

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a major overhaul to the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11, confirming that the tournament will now be staged at only two venues, Karachi and Lahore, with initial matches set to be played without spectators.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi revealed the decision during a press conference on Sunday, citing ongoing geopolitical tensions and an emerging oil crisis as key factors behind the move.

Originally, six cities, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Peshawar, were scheduled to host matches in the expanded eight-team edition.

However, the board has now reduced the number of venues to just two in order to streamline logistics and address security concerns.

“After consultations with the Prime Minister and security agencies, we have decided that the PSL will begin on March 26 as planned,” Naqvi stated.

“Initially, matches will be held without crowds, and this will continue depending on the global situation.”

Mohsin Naqvi also confirmed that the opening ceremony of the tournament has been cancelled, with PSL 11 set to begin directly with the opening match on March 26.

“The opening ceremony of the league has been cancelled,” he said, adding, “The tournament will begin directly with the match.”

Defending champions Lahore Qalandars are scheduled to face Hyderabad Kingsmen at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium in the curtain-raiser.

The PCB chief acknowledged the disappointment for fans, particularly in cities like Peshawar and Faisalabad, which were set to host PSL matches for the first time.

He expressed regret over the change in plans but emphasised that the board would aim to deliver high-quality coverage to ensure fans remain engaged.

Naqvi added that a revised schedule reflecting the updated venues will be released in due course.

Despite the changes, the tournament will continue to run until May 3, with the PCB opting to proceed with the league while adapting to the prevailing circumstances.

Babar, Shaheen urged to take break from cricket

Former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has suggested that star duo Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi should take a break from cricket to regain their form.

Azhar, who played 97 Tests and 53 ODIs for Pakistan, shared his views on both players during the ‘Sports Room’ Eid Special programme.

During the show, Azhar was asked a series of questions in rapid-fire round.  When the host sought his advice for Babar and Shaheen, he suggested that both take time off from international cricket.

“Babar should take a six-month break from international cricket,” he said.

“He [Shaheen] should also take three months’ rest so that he gathers his fitness. I feel that if he takes two or three months break, he will be a great bowler,” he added.

The host then asked what suggestion you would give to [Director of the High Performance Center] Aqib Javed after a recent press conference. Azhar said that he should keep focusing on achieving his key objectives regarding academies.

‘He [Shaheen] should also take three months’ rest. I feel that if he takes rest, he would be a great bowler.

The 41-year-old was also asked to pick the better captain among Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, and Babar Azam.

”Babar [Azam],” he replied.

For the unversed, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi have been in the spotlight due to their underwhelming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The leading run scorer in T20Is managed only 91 runs in six matches, averaging 22.75 with 46 his highest score.

As a result, he was not picked in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. However, Aqib Javed later revealed that the batter was not fit for the mega event.

Meanwhile, Shaheen took eight wickets in five matches at an economy rate of 10.52.

Welbeck scores twice to dent Liverpool’s top-five hopes

Danny Welbeck scored twice as Brighton beat Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday to deal a major blow to the Reds’ push for a Champions League spot next season.

Arne Slot’s men came into the match on the sunny south coast in buoyant mood after hammering Galatasaray 4-0 in midweek to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

But a goal in each half from the evergreen Welbeck gave the home team a fourth win in five Premier League matches, keeping alive their own hopes of European football next season.

Liverpool were missing both goalkeeper Alisson Becker and forward Mohamed Salah at the Amex Stadium.

And they suffered a further injury blow early in the game when top scorer Hugo Ekitike hobbled off with an apparent dead leg after a firm challenge from former Liverpool stalwart James Milner.

The champions found themselves behind when Welbeck scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season in the 14th minute, nodding home from close range after Diego Gomez headed a cross-field pass back across goal.

That made the 35-year-old former Manchester United and Arsenal forward the top English goalscorer in the league this season.

Liverpool found some rhythm after falling behind, and Alexis Mac Allister went close to an equaliser in the 22nd minute, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen got down smartly low to his left to claw the ball away.

However, the visitors were level in the 30th minute after some clever opportunism from left-back Milos Kerkez, capitalising on an error from Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, who paid the price for heading a high ball back to his goalkeeper without looking behind him.

Hungary defender Kerkez nipped in and produced a composed finish, flicking the ball over the stranded Verbruggen.

Brighton started the second half brightly and were back in front in the 56th minute, with Welbeck again on the scoresheet.

Yankuba Minteh’s pinpoint cross was played into Welbeck’s path by Jack Hinshelwood, and he finished confidently, with the goal confirmed following a VAR check.

Welbeck, who made his Premier League debut for United in 2008, is enjoying his highest-scoring season in the league.

Slot threw on teenager Rio Ngumoha, Andy Robertson, and Federico Chiesa in a desperate search for an equaliser, but it was Brighton who remained the more threatening team.

Defeat leaves Liverpool fifth in the Premier League, two points behind Aston Villa and one ahead of Chelsea, with the top five almost certain to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The club’s Premier League title defence collapsed earlier in the season, but they remain alive in the Champions League and face Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals early next month.

Liverpool’s Brazilian international goalkeeper Alisson posted on social media that he would be “out of action for a while”.

Top-ranked Alcaraz, Sabalenka win Miami openers

World number one Carlos Alcaraz was dialed in on Friday, powering past rising Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Miami Open.

The 22-year-old Spaniard used an early break in each set and saved all three break points he faced in a confident performance at Hard Rock Stadium, where 19-year-old Fonseca was cheered by a raucous contingent of fans.

“I was really good from the beginning until the last ball,” Alcaraz said. “I know how good Joao is and that’s why I was really focused, every point, every shot, trying to figure out what is the best possible shot for me.”

Alcaraz bounced back from his semi-final loss to Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells last week to improve to 17-1 in 2026.

That includes an Australian Open title that made him the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam and a title in Doha.

Alcaraz gained the upper hand against 39th-ranked Fonseca with a break for 2-1 in the opening set, delivering a blistering forehand service return winner on break point.

He closed out the set with a love game, broke Fonseca to open the second and secured the victory with his eighth ace on match point.

It was extra satisfying since Alcaraz was stunned in his Miami opener by David Goffin last year.

“He had a lot of chances to stay in the match to (keep it) tight, so I’m just happy to stay calm, stay positive at these moments,” said Alcaraz, who next faces American Sebastian Korda, a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Camilo Ugo.

Women’s number one Aryna Sabalenka held off determined American Ann Li 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to launch her Miami title defense.

The Belarusian was pleased to get through in straight sets against her 39th-ranked foe in a match moved to the third show court as organizers hustled to get the rain-hit tournament back on schedule.

She needed more than an hour to pocket a first set in which she led 4-1 and wasted seven break points in the eighth game.

“I was there, I was fighting no matter what, even though my game probably wasn’t the best one that I have,” Sabalenka said.

Third-seeded Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, fourth-seeded American Coco Gauff and sixth-seeded compatriot Amanda Anisimova also reached the third round.

Kazakhstan’s Rybakina, who stunned Sabalenka in the final in Melbourne but fell to the world number one in the Indian Wells final, beat compatriot Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3.

French Open champion Gauff rallied to beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match delayed several hours by rain.

Anisimova outlasted Australian veteran Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

It was Gauff’s first match since she retired during her third-round match at Indian Wells with “scary” pain in her left arm.

Gauff said the injury was improving.

“I might feel it sometimes on court, but I definitely feel it less and less every day,” said Gauff, who took some time to find her rhythm against the aggressive Cocciaretto.

“She takes the ball so early, you don’t have a lot of time to react,” Gauff said. “Today, once I got adjusted to the tempo of play I was able to control the rallies when they went the distance.”

In other men’s action, 56th-ranked American Ethan Quinn upset Norway’s 11th-seeded Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-6 (9/7), saving seven set points in the second set on the way to victory.

Japanese wildcard Rei Sakamoto bagged his maiden ATP match win, converting his fifth match point in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7) first-round victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic.

The 19-year-old ranked 164th booked a showdown with in-form Indian Wells finalist Medvedev.

Gary Kirsten breaks silence on Pakistan coaching stint

Former South Africa opener Gary Kirsten opened up about his brief stint as the Pakistan cricket team’s coach.

Gary’s appointment as ODI and T20I coach of the Pakistan team came in April 2024 alongside Jason Gillespie, who was handed the reins of the Test side.

However, despite signing a two-year contract, his tenure lasted only six months before he tendered his resignation. The resignation followed a rift with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over selection issues.

In an interview with TalkSport, Kirsten spoke candidly about the challenges he faced during his stint.

The 58-year-old also highlighted the outside noise and tough environment that contributed to his resignation, adding that he had never encountered anything like it before.

“What really stood out to me was the sheer level of interference. I’ve never encountered anything like it before. Did it catch me off guard? Maybe, but it was definitely notable,” he revealed.

“It’s really challenging for a coach to establish a system with the players when there’s nonstop interference from outside. It was a tough environment, with many punitive measures for poor performance and similar issues,” he continued.

Kirsten further stated that coaches are always in the firing line when a team ends on the losing side. He noted that removing coaches is often seen as the easiest option and questioned the very purpose of appointing them.

“As a coach, you’re often the first to be blamed when the team struggles. People say things like ‘let’s remove the coach’ or ‘let’s impose restrictions on the coach’ because it’s the easiest way to react—but in my opinion, it’s completely counterproductive. If that’s the approach, why even hire a coach?” he concluded.
