Daniil Medvedev claimed his second Dubai title on Saturday following the withdrawal of his opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, due to a left hamstring injury.

The Russian also said he was unsure if he would be able to play next week’s ATP 1000 event in California after UAE airspace was partially closed due to Iranian strikes on the country, following the United States’ and Israel’s attacks on Iran.

Dutchman Griekspoor picked up the injury towards the end of the opening set of his semi-final win over Andrey Rublev on Friday and looked doubtful for the final when he limped into his post-match press conference.

The tournament announced on Saturday that Griekspoor “was deemed unfit to play in the ATP 500 men’s final following a medical assessment”.

“Of course, unfortunate, but Tallon, I could see yesterday that maybe he had an injury,” said Medvedev in audio quotes provided by the ATP.

“You never know how these injuries develop through the night. Sometimes they get easier, and you can play, like with some soreness. Sometimes they get worse, so I guess it got worse.

“I cannot do anything about it. I played a great tournament, the four matches I played. Of course, I wanted to play the final, but it is what it is.

“I played an unbelievable match yesterday, so I would, either way, take it as a final for me, and I’m happy to win the tournament.”

This is the first time Medvedev has been able to repeat a title. The 30-year-old Russian had won 22 trophies in 22 different events before clinching a second Dubai crown on Saturday to go with the one he captured in 2023.

“Of course, I take a lot of confidence. But tennis is a very fast-paced sport, so one week you can play not the way you want, and the other week you’re playing amazingly. So I just hope to bring this confidence from the four matches I played in Indian Wells, for sure.

“I played unreal the whole week, so I was actually really looking forward to the final and trying to play even better than I did. But it is what it is, and I’m really happy with how the week turned out in general.”

The Dubai doubles final went ahead as scheduled, and the singles final was set to be played despite Iran’s ongoing attacks on the UAE on Saturday.

The players are meant to fly straight to California for the upcoming Indian Wells Masters, but their travel plans have been disrupted due to regional airspace closures and the suspension of all flight operations at all Dubai airports until further notice.

Medvedev said he still didn’t know how he was going to make it to California and will be waiting on updates regarding the reopening of the Gulf region’s airspace.

KANDY: Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka’s heroics went in vain as Pakistan managed to seal a narrow five-run victory over Sri Lanka in the Super Eight clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. 

Set a daunting 213, Sri Lanka fell short by five runs in the final over despite Shanaka’s 76* from 31 balls, smashing eight sixes and two fours.

Pakistan’s hopes of advancing remained till the halfway mark; however, Sri Lanka’s lower order managed to drag them out of trouble and brought them back into the contest.

Pakistan removed opener Pathum Nissanka for three in the second over.

The second wicket added 26 before Kamil Mishara fell prey to Abrar Ahmed for 25.

As a result, Sri Lanka were reduced to 33-2 in 4.1 overs.

Charith Asalanka and Pavan Rathnayake came to the fore, putting the chase back on track with a 42-run partnership. The duo batted at a brisk rate, bringing the team’s total to 75 in 8.5 overs.

It was Abrar again for Pakistan who provided the much-needed breakthrough in the shape of Asalanka’s wicket. The left-hander made 25 from 18 balls.

Sri Lanka lost a few quick wickets and were left reeling at 101-5 in 12 overs.

However, a crucial stand between Dasun Shanaka and Rathnayake not only dashed Pakistan’s hopes but also put Sri Lanka on the verge of victory.

With the Islanders requiring 28 from the last over, Shanaka tonked Shaheen for a boundary and three maximums in a row to leave the equation six from two. But the pacer eventually held his nerve and bowled two dot balls to win it for Pakistan.

Asked to bat first, Pakistan racked up 212-8 in 20 overs, thanks to a monumental opening partnership.

Promoted to open the batting, Fakhar Zaman capitalized on the pristine conditions, adding a monumental 176-run stand alongside Sahibzada Farhan.

The pair launched an assault on the hosts, racing to 64 at the end of the powerplay.

Once the fielding restrictions were lifted, Sri Lanka tried spin from both ends, but it could not stop Zaman and Farhan going berserk. Both batters raised a century stand at the halfway mark of the innings.

In the 12th over, Zaman deposited Wellalage for a four and a six to reach his fifty on 27 balls. The carnage continued until the fifth ball of the sixth over.

Sri Lanka sniffed an opening after Zaman’s wicket, who chopped on after hitting four sixes and nine fours in his 84 from 42 balls.

The wicket sparked a collapse that halted Pakistan’s proceedings in the death overs. As a result, the Green Shirts slumped to 199-5 and 212-8 in 20 overs.

For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka picked up three wickets.

KANDY: Opening batter Fakhar Zaman on Saturday broke Mohammad Rizwan’s record for the most sixes by a Pakistan batter during the Super Eight clash against Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Fakhar surpassed Mohammad Rizwan’s previous record of 95 sixes with a towering hit off spinner Maheesh Theekshana in the third over of Pakistan’s innings.

KANDY: Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan on Saturday shattered Indian legend Virat Kohli’s record for most runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. 

Kohli held the record with a tally of 319 runs in the 2014 T20 World Cup.

Before heading into the Pakistan Super Eight fixture against Sri Lanka, Sahibzada had scored 283 runs in six matches. The right-hander had required 36 runs to break the record.

Farhan overtook Kohli when he smashed Shanaka for a boundary in the sixth over. The former India captain scored 319 runs in the 2014 edition.

The right-handed opener now leads the run charts with 323* runs, underlining a standout campaign that has included a century and two half-centuries for Pakistan at the T20 World Cup 2026.

Former all-rounder Shahid Afridi believes Shadab Khan will not be a bad choice to captain Pakistan’s T20I team, emphasizing that consistent performances will be key if he is to lead the team following the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Currently, Salman Ali Agha is leading the side in the shorter format. The 2009 champions are on the brink of elimination after losing to England in the Super Eight.

Shahid Afridi shared his views on the captaincy while talking on a private channel.

“If the same coach [Mike Hesson] continues, then in my opinion, Shadab Khan will be appointed as captain,” he remarked.

The 27-year-old backed Shadab Khan amid limited options to lead the side.

“Shadab is not a bad choice for captaincy because we do not have many other options at the moment,” he continued

“However, if Shadab had maintained consistency in his bowling, the way he was performing earlier, it would have strengthened his case,” Afridi explained.

The next over unfolded in a similar manner as Rehan struck boundaries off the first and final deliveries to collect 16 runs. That left England needing just five runs in the final over.

Will Jacks, who remained unbeaten on 32 from 18, was awarded Player of the Match for his all-round contribution.

COLOMBO: England sealed a nervy last-over victory against New Zealand in the Group 2 Super Eight fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 here at the RPS Stadium on Friday.

Set a stiff 160, England managed to secure a thrilling victory in the last over.

England lost wickets early and looked like they would be squeezed out at 117-6, needing 43 from the last three overs.

But Ahmed and Jacks took 22 off the 18th over from Glenn Phillips to turn the match on its head.

Ahmed blasted 19 off seven balls in his first T20 World Cup match.

Jacks made an unbeaten 32 off 18 as the pair saw England to 161-6 with three balls to spare.

Jacks, who also took 2-23 to be England’s leading bowler, was named player of the match for an incredible fourth time in seven T20 World Cup outings this campaign.

England will move on to a semi-final in Mumbai on Thursday against either India or the West Indies, who clash on Sunday to decide the last semi-final berth.

New Zealand now have to sweat on the outcome of Saturday’s clash between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Kandy which will decide the second semi-finalist from Super Eights Group 2.

Pakistan have an inferior run rate to New Zealand so will need to win by 65 runs or inside 13 overs, if chasing, to deny the Kiwis.
