Brazil president Lula jokes about ‘signing’ Messi for World Cup 2026

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suggested on Wednesday that the country’s football team should hire Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

The five-time world champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in their opening match, which highlighted several frailties in their game.

Brazil’s fiercest football rivals, Argentina, had a far better time, with Messi scoring three goals against Algeria on Tuesday.

“I was thinking about signing Messi to play for Brazil,” Lula said, laughing, when journalists asked him about his country’s showing at the World Cup.

However, he noted it wasn’t a “big deal” for Brazil to draw with Morocco, which he said was its strongest opponent in the group.

“They say that whenever Brazil is heavily doubted, they win the World Cup… let’s see.”

Brazil are set to face Haiti on Friday. All eyes are on Neymar, 34, who was included on the team after a nearly three-year absence due to a mixture of injuries and poor form.

Brazil’s all-time record scorer took part in his first training session with the team on Wednesday after a calf injury last month.

“Did you miss me?” Neymar shouted with a laugh to journalists as he joined the team on the pitch for some light activity. It is unclear when he will debut at the competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo reacts after Portugal held by DR Congo

HOUSTON: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has shared his reaction after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening Group K fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Roberto Martinez’s side made a bright start and broke the deadlock inside six minutes when midfielder Joao Neves headed home from a well-worked move to hand Portugal an early advantage.

Portugal dominated possession during the opening stages and pinned DR Congo deep inside their own half, with Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes heavily involved as they searched for a second goal.

However, the African side remained resilient and gradually settled into the contest.

Despite Portugal’s control for much of the first half, DR Congo struck back in stoppage time through Yoane Wissa, who capitalised on a late opportunity to score his country’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup.

The second half proved a frustrating affair for both teams, with chances at either end failing to produce a winner as the match finished level.

Following the disappointing result, Ronaldo took to his social media account on X to send a message to supporters and insist Portugal’s campaign remains on track.

“It wasn’t the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Head up and focus on the next game,” Ronaldo wrote.

The draw leaves Portugal with work to do in Group K, having missed the opportunity to make an ideal start to their World Cup campaign.

Ghana beat Panama 1-0 in World Cup opener after injury-time winner

TORONTO: Ghana scored a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L clash here on Wednesday.

Caleb Yirenkyi scored the winning goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, sending thousands of Ghanaians in Canada’s largest city into a frenzy and settling an otherwise attritional battle.

Both sides largely struggled to generate chances in the first half after Panama striker Cecilio Waterman’s second-minute attempt was steered away by outstretched Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.

The Black Stars didn’t attempt a shot on goal through the first half.

The second half played out under steady rain at the Toronto Stadium but saw more sustained attacking play.

Cristian Martinez triggered a massive roar from the loud Panamanian contingent when he lashed a shot into the side-netting in the 60th minute.

But the match looked headed for a scoreless draw until Yirenkyi put the Black Stars ahead.

Ghana’s veteran coach Carlos Queiroz turned to his side’s fans after the goal, urging them on in celebration.

Queiroz only took charge of the Black Stars a couple of months before the start of the tournament.

Wednesday’s fixture made him only the second coach to appear in five consecutive World Cups, after leading Portugal in 2010 and Iran in 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Loud boos rang out across the crowd of nearly 43,000 during a second-half hydration break under pouring rain.

Ghana triumphed despite being without Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey, who is facing trial on rape charges in Britain. Canadian authorities denied him a World Cup visa over the British case.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Fatima Sana heroics in vain as South Africa edge Pakistan

BIRMINGHAM: Fatima Sana’s valiant all-round performance went in vain as South Africa edged Pakistan by two wickets in a thrilling Women’s World Cup 2026 clash at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Chasing 127, South Africa reached the target in 16.5 overs, surviving a late scare after appearing to be in complete control for much of the innings

The Proteas were comfortably placed at 76-2 at the halfway mark before Pakistan fought back strongly. The moment shifted dramatically as South Africa lost three wickets for just 17 runs.

South Africa slipped further to 107-8, but Nadine de Klerk held her nerve with a clinical unbeaten 37 from 28 balls, including six fours, to guide her side over the line.

For Pakistan, Fatima Sana bowled her heart out, picking up a three-wicket haul in 2.5 overs while giving away 16.

South Africa restricted Pakistan to 126-9 in 20 overs. Skipper Fatima Sana hit an unbeaten 55 off 38 balls, striking half a dozen fours and two sixes to take her side to a respectable total.

At one stage, Green Shirts were reeling at 50-8 in 11 overs, but Fatima Sana and Tuba Hassan shared a record 71-run stand for the ninth wicket for Pakistan to revive the innings. Tuba contributed 23 from 27 balls.

For South Africa, Marizanne Kapp played a crucial role with the ball and picked up three wickets.

Earlier, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma ran riot as India thrashed the Netherlands by 95 runs.

Mandhana and Verma put on 115 for the first wicket, setting the foundation for India’s imposing total of 209-5 in Leeds.

Smashing 11 fours and one six, Mandhana top scored with 74 from 47 balls, while her fellow opener Verma hit 10 fours in her innings of 55.

India’s run spree left the Netherlands with little hope of a successful run chase.

Dutch captain Babette de Leede was their leading scorer with 28, but Verma followed her dynamic display with the bat by taking three wickets.

Sree Charani finished off India’s one-sided victory with four wickets from her four overs.

India have won their first two games of the tournament in England after beating arch-rivals Pakistan in their opener.

Georgia Voll starred for Australia in a nine-wicket win over Bangladesh at Headingley.

Voll blasted six fours and one six in her unbeaten 45 from 32 balls, guiding Australia to their target of 78 for the loss of one wicket with more than 10 overs to spare.

Bangladesh mustered only 77-8 from their 20 overs, with Sophie Molineux, Kim Garth, and Ellyse Perry taking two wickets each.

Australia made it their successive wins to start the tournament after their 65-run victory over South Africa on Saturday.

Bangladesh had beaten the Netherlands in their opening match.

Cristiano Ronaldo equals Lionel Messi in latest FIFA World Cup milestone

HOUSTON: Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo matched Argentina captain Lionel Messi’s record for most FIFA World Cup appearances during his side’s clash against DR Congo on Wednesday.

Ronaldo joined Messi in a record six World Cup appearances. The pair now jointly hold the record for the most tournament appearances in football history.

The 41-year-old made his debut in 2006 and went on to feature in the 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 editions, matching rival Messi.

Most FIFA World Cup Appearances

Lionel Messi (Argentina) — 6 (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026*)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) — 6 (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026*)
Lothar Matthaus (Germany) — 5 (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998)
Miroslav Klose (Germany) — 4 (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014)
Paolo Maldini (Italy) — 4 (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002)

Messi continues to hold the record for the most FIFA World Cup matches with 27 appearances, while Ronaldo is tied for fourth place overall with 23 appearances.

Most FIFA World Cup matches played:

Lionel Messi (Argentina) — 27* matches
Lothar Matthaus (Germany) — 25 matches
Miroslav Klose (Germany) — 24 matches
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) — 23* matches
Paolo Maldini (Italy) — 23 matches
Diego Maradona (Argentina) —21

Nonetheless, Cristiano Ronaldo had a disappointing start to his record FIFA World Cup campaign as DR Congo held his side to a 1-1 draw.

Ronaldo looked like a peripheral figure throughout the match as Portugal’s strategy of holding the ball for too long without any attempts proved costly.

Eventually, DR Congo secured historic World Cup point after appearing in the tournament for the first time in 52 years.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Harry Kane stars in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia

Harry Kane scored twice in the first half as England eventually saw off Croatia 4-2 to launch their World Cup title assault in Texas on Wednesday.

Jude Bellingham, immediately after half-time, and substitute Marcus Rashford, with five minutes to go, ensured a winning start for Thomas Tuchel’s side after Croatia had fought back to level at 2-2.

The prolific Kane twice put England ahead in the first half — one a retaken penalty — only for Martin Baturina and Petar Musa to hit back for 2018 runners-up Croatia.

With both sides shaky at the back, the second half threatened another goal glut, Bellingham needing just two minutes to put England ahead again in front of a crowd of 70,000.

England had numerous chances to extend their lead immediately after, but did not take them until Rashford popped up.

“I thought the game was two halves really,” the skipper Kane told ITV.

“I thought first half we were okay. Really disappointed to concede in the way we did, the way we dropped off.

“And credit to the manager. The manager gave us a speech at half-time just to say, look, if we lose, we’re losing our way.

“And I think you saw that, the way we come out in the second half, we went full gas, and they couldn’t live with it.”

The meeting was a repeat of the 2018 semi-final, which Croatia won after extra-time, although England have since had the edge against one of the older squads in North America.

Tuchel’s side, bidding to deliver England a first major trophy since 1966, made a nervy start in front of a packed house at the impressive air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Then the drama came. Croatia’s talismanic captain Luka Modric dangled out a leg and caught Noni Madueke in the box.

Kane saw his unconvincing penalty saved by Dominik Livakovic, only for French referee Clement Turpin to order a retake after video replays deemed the stopper had come off his line.

Turpin once sent off Tuchel in the Champions League and the referee taking charge of the game had been highlighted by English media this week.

Bayern Munich predator Kane held his nerve second time around, again going to Livakovic’s left but this time in more ruthless fashion to give England the lead after 12 minutes.

Now it was all England, and Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham — preferred to Morgan Rogers in the number 10 role — surged upfield, forcing Livakovic to smother.

Loud boos rang out for the drinks break, given the match was under a roof and not the unforgiving Texas sun.

On 36 minutes Croatia drew level.

England squandered the ball in midfield, then Petar Sucic left John Stones on the floor with some neat footwork to set up Baturina.

The 23-year-old met the ball first time and whipped it past Jordan Pickford, who got a hand to the ball.

Zlatko Dalic’s side were level for just six minutes as a Declan Rice corner found Kane unmarked and the captain nodded home.

It took skipper Kane to 10 World Cup goals, the most of any England player along with Gary Lineker.

Tuchel, who has made it clear that winning the World Cup is his aim, barely smiled.

Putting the seal on a frenetic first half, Musa took advantage of more poor England defending in the fifth minute of injury time to stroke the ball in from close range for 2-2.

The second half started just as the first ended as Bellingham galloped down the right unchallenged and rolled the ball into the corner.

Kane and Nico O’Reilly twice each, and Bellingham, had good chances for a 4-2 lead as England pummelled the Croatia goal.

With 15 minutes left and England retreating, Croatia had several opportunities, before Rashford made the three points safe.

DR Congo hold toothless Portugal to a draw in FIFA World Cup 2026

HOUSTON: DR Congo held Portugal to a shock 1-1 draw in their Group K fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Houston Stadium on Wednesday.

Joao Neves opened the scoring in the sixth minute for Portugal with a fabulous header. This proved to be the only bright moment in the game for the Team of the Shields.

They maintained possession for a long time and, with fewer attempts on goal, DR Congo sensed an opportunity to score an equalizer.

The moment came in the added half-time when Yoane Wissa brilliantly used his head to score an equalizer. Newcastle striker Yoane used Arthur Masuaku’s cross from six yards to score a historic goal — DR Congo’s first World Cup goal.

Following the first half, DR Congo defended well and never allowed the opposition to capitalize despite their desperate attempts.

For much of the time, Ronaldo never looked like he was in the game, with the two best chances for him coming in the second half. The Al-Nassr striker was twice involved in low cut-backs from substitute Francisco Conceicao but narrowly missed the target both times.

The Congolese were matching the Portuguese, though, and 35-year-old veteran striker Cedric Bakambu shrugged aside Bruno Fernandes, but his shot came back off the near post.

Eventually, the match ended in a stalemate with both teams awarded one point each.

Portugal will face Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday, 23 June, while  DR Congo head to Mexico for their next Group encounter against Colombia in Guadalajara on 24 June

New Zealand fight back against England on opening day

Tom Blundell hit New Zealand’s first fifty of the series, and Glenn Phillips posted an unbeaten 49 as the tourists fought back against England on an intriguing opening day of the second Test at the Oval on Wednesday.

The Black Caps were 291-7 at stumps as England looked to put the Ben Stokes saga behind them.

Blundell made 51 and shared valuable partnerships of 81 with Daryl Mitchell (44) and 75 with Phillips after New Zealand, sent into bat, had slumped to 107-4.

This was a much-improved New Zealand batting display following their 115-run defeat in the first of a three-match series at Lord’s earlier this month.

But on day where four quicks did the bulk of the bowling, it was all-rounder Jacob Bethell’s left-arm spin that did for Blundell, deceived by a slower, flighted delivery he miscued to stand-in England skipper Joe Root at short midwicket.

Blundell’s exit came two deliveries after he completed an 82-ball fifty on an an Oval pitch with far more pace and bounce than the one at Lord’s, where New Zealand were dismissed for just 113 and 138 in difficult batting conditions.

Bethell also had Nathan Smith top-edging a sweep before the close in a return of 2-8 in five overs.

Fast bowler Sonny Baker — one of three debutants in the England side — marked his introduction to Test cricket with an encouraging 2-63 in 15 after the 23-year-old Hampshire quick managed an impressive speed of 88 mph (142 kph) in his first over.

England dropped captain Stokes and Gus Atkinson after the pair broke a team curfew after a morale-boosting win at Lord’s that followed their humiliating 4-1 Ashes series loss in Australia.

The duo stayed out in a late-night drinking session, which reportedly ended in a physical confrontation involving a Saracens rugby player.

England made five changes, with Baker, batter Jordan Cox, and wicket-keeper James Rew — a late call-up after Jamie Smith withdrew on Tuesday following the birth of his second child — all making their debuts.

Ollie Robinson, who took seven wickets at Lord’s, was ruled out through injury, while Jofra Archer returned following his IPL commitments to spearhead England’s pace attack.

Playing in only his second Test, four years after his debut, Matthew Fisher had Devon Conway caught behind by Rew, rewarding the selectors’ decision to pick him instead of dropped spinner Shoaib Bashir.

Henry Nicholls has been given the unenviable task of replacing Kane Williamson at number three.

Williamson announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect following the series opener.

Archer had New Zealand captain Tom Latham brilliantly caught by Bethell, diving high to his right at gully, for 27, with Nicholls out for 24 when he played on to fast bowler Josh Tongue.

Rachin Ravindra made an attractive 33, with 24 runs in boundaries, before he was well caught by Bethell off Baker as the sun broke through initially grey skies in south London.

The Black Caps were 188-5 soon after tea when Mitchell, to his evident frustration, holed out off Baker to end a 74-ball innings featuring six fours.

New batter Phillips, hit Baker for two boundaries off successive deliveries — a short ball slapped over cover followed by a glorious drive through extra cover.

India have won their first two games of the tournament in England after beating arch rivals Pakistan in their opener.

Earlier, Georgia Voll starred as Australia eased to a nine-wicket win over Bangladesh at Headingley.

Voll blasted six fours and one six in her unbeaten 45 from 32 balls, guiding Australian to their target of 78 for the loss of one wicket with more than 10 overs to spare.

Bangladesh mustered only 77-8 from their 20 overs, with Sophie Molineux, Kim Garth and Ellyse Perry taking two wickets each.

Australia made it their successive wins to start the tournament after their 65-run victory over South Africa on Saturday.

Bangladesh had beaten the Netherlands in their opening match.

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been ruled out of their next two matches due to a calf injury.

Sciver-Brunt, who recently returned from a torn calf muscle, was forced to retire on 48 in Tuesday’s four-wicket win over Ireland in Southampton.

Scans on Wednesday revealed a calf muscle strain and the 33-year-old will not feature against Scotland or the West Indies.

Portugal players wear special wristbands in FIFA World Cup opener

HOUSTON: Portugal players paid tribute to their late former team-mate Diogo Jota during their FIFA World Cup 2026 opening match against DR Congo at Houston Stadium on Wednesday.

Jota was a hugely popular member of the Portugal squad. His 49th appearance in the 2025 Nations League final proved to be a final one for his country as he died four weeks later, alongside his brother Andre Silva, in a car crash in Spain.

The commemorative wristbands, a gift from Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, carry the names of all squad members, along with Jota’s.

Before the match, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez confirmed that the players want to honor Jota’s memory.

“Diogo Jota’s spirit, strength, and example are the plus one and will always be the plus one,” he said.

If Portugal top the group, they will play their round of 32 match on the first anniversary of Jota’s death, which would make it an emotional occasion for the squad.

A few weeks ago, midfielder Vitinha revealed the notion behind wearing special wristbands.

“Basically, the story of the wristband is, when we went to meet with the Prime Minister, he offered us this wristband,” Vitinha told reporters.

“They made sure that it was a wristband that we could wear on the pitch. It has all the specifics for us to be able to enter the pitch with it, with the name of all the players plus the special name of Diogo Jota.”

He said the players were given the freedom to decide whether to wear the wristbands and how to use them.

“He let us choose if we wanted to use it or not, how (we use it), during the day or during the match. We received it with a lot of affection and we chose to use it.”
