Algeria come from behind to beat Jordan 2-1 in FIFA World Cup

SANTA CLARA: Algeria came behind to beat Jordan 2-1 in their Group J clash of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 on Monday, eliminating the Asian debutants from the tournament.

Amine Gouiri equalised Nizar al-Rashdan’s opening goal before Nadhir Benbouali scored Algeria’s winner in the 82nd minute in Santa Clara.

The win gives Algeria a hope of progressing to the knockout round if they can beat Austria in their final group match in Kansas City on Saturday.

Earlier on Monday, Austria suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of defending champions Argentina, thanks to a record-breaking brace by star player Lionel Messi.

WATCH: Haaland joins Norway’s “Viking Row” celebration after Senegal win

NEW YORK: Erling Haaland was at the heart of Norway’s latest World Cup moment on Monday, not just for his goals, but for embracing the viral “Viking Row” celebration after a dramatic 3-2 win over Senegal in New Jersey.

The Manchester City striker, who scored twice in the contest, joined teammates and supporters in performing the unique celebration that has quickly become one of the defining images of Norway’s tournament campaign.

The ritual, which has been seen across Norwegian fan zones in Boston and New York during the World Cup, involves supporters sitting in a Viking longboat formation and mimicking rowing motions in time with drums and chants.

The idea is inspired by Norway’s Viking heritage, symbolising the seafaring journeys of Norse warriors and explorers from more than a thousand years ago.

Unlike Iceland’s famous “Viking Clap” from Euro 2016, which is built around synchronised clapping and chanting, Norway’s version recreates the physical motion of rowing a ship forward, turning the stands into a moving, rhythmic display of national identity.

After the win over Senegal, Erling Haaland explained how the celebration came to life within the squad.

“I saw it online; it’s gone completely viral,” Haaland told Fox Sports. “Martin [Ødegaard] asked me before the game: ‘Do you think we should join in?’ I said, ‘If we win, let’s do it, why not?’”

Haaland joined captain Martin Ødegaard, teammates, and even head coach Ståle Solbakken as they headed toward the Norwegian fans after full-time and took part in the rowing celebration together.

The striker’s brace took his tournament tally to four goals, keeping him firmly in the race for the Golden Boot alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.

The victory also ensured Norway will at least finish second in Group I, with a high-stakes clash against France still to come to decide top spot.

Julian Alvarez says ‘best for everyone’ if he leaves Atletico Madrid

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez said on Monday that he wants to leave Atletico Madrid in a move that would be “best for everyone”, with Real Madrid and Barcelona competing for his signature.

Atletico rejected an offer of 150 million euros ($173 million) from Real earlier this month, while Barcelona are hopeful of winning the race to sign the 26-year-old.

Alvarez spoke about his future for the first time after playing in Argentina’s 2-0 group win over Austria at the World Cup on Monday, as the defending champions secured their place in the last 32.

“This is not the time to talk about this, but I also don’t want to hide. I try to be an honest person,” Alvarez told reporters in Texas.

“I spoke with the people at the club, with those I needed to talk to, and I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” he said, without specifying his preferred destination.

Last week, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo said he had no indication that Alvarez wanted to leave the club after two trophyless seasons.

He also spoke out against the attempts of rival clubs to prise the striker away and said Alvarez would only leave if his 500-million-euro release clause was met.

Real appear to have turned their attention to other targets after their bid was dismissed, but Barcelona are reportedly preparing a new offer as they seek a replacement for the departing Robert Lewandowski.

Neymar in contention for Brazil’s World Cup clash with Scotland

MIAMI: Brazil star Neymar is in line to make his long-awaited return for the Selecao when they face Scotland in their final Group C fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday, with head coach Carlo Ancelotti set to make a late decision on the forward’s fitness.

The 34-year-old has yet to feature in the tournament after missing Brazil’s opening two matches against Morocco and Haiti due to a calf injury sustained in May.

Neymar, who was included in Ancelotti’s squad despite concerns over his fitness, returned to full training last week and took part in his first tactical session under the Italian coach on Monday, raising hopes of his first appearance of the competition.

The Brazilian icon has not represented his country since October 2023, when he suffered a serious knee injury against Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier. Since then, a series of fitness setbacks during his time in Saudi Arabia and later at Santos have kept him sidelined for more than 650 days.

The forward rejoined his boyhood club, Santos, in a bid to revive his career, but recurring injuries and off-field controversies disrupted his comeback.

Despite that, he has managed six goals and four assists in 15 appearances this year, although he has been carefully managed and has not played more than four consecutive matches since returning from knee surgery in February.

His selection for the World Cup generated considerable debate in Brazil, with questions surrounding both his fitness and his ability to make an impact after such a lengthy absence.

Brazil currently lead Group C with four points, ahead of Morocco on goal difference, while Scotland sit third with three points.

After opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco, the five-time world champions bounced back with a convincing 3-0 victory over Haiti and will be aiming for another strong performance against Scotland to secure top spot in the group.

Belgium’s Jeremy Doku becomes father after World Cup controversy

Jeremy Doku has become a father, the Belgian football association announced Monday, days after the player’s plans to leave the FIFA World Cup 2026 to be there for the birth sparked controversy.

After consultations with medical staff, Doku was allowed to temporarily leave the Red Devils before last Sunday’s game against Iran to join his wife in London, where the couple welcomed a baby boy, Praise, it was reported.

“Jeremy received the news before yesterday’s match that the birth was imminent,” the team’s doctor, Brahim Hacene, said.

Doku had already been ruled out of Sunday’s match due to illness.

“As he had already been receiving the appropriate medical treatment for several days, he was able to fly without any medical risk to be with his family during this very special moment,” the doctor said.

“Mother, father, and baby are all doing wonderfully,” he added.

Doku, who is to rejoin his teammates in Seattle on Tuesday, is regarded as one of the best young players in the Belgium squad, who have made a solid if unspectacular start to their campaign, drawing both their matches thus far.

The 24-year-old had made it clear before the Red Devils’ first match that he would have wanted to be there for the birth of his first child, drawing criticism from some quarters.

A presenter on L’Equipe TV, the TV channel of the historic French sports newspaper, questioned the decision, saying fathers were “useless” at childbirth whereas hundreds of footballers would have killed to play in a World Cup.

The comments triggered an online storm, forcing L’Equipe to apologise and distance itself from them. The presenter has been stood down from her show.

Doku started in Belgium’s first match against Egypt but struggled to make an impact before being replaced.

The lacklustre scoreless draw against Iran in Los Angeles drew scorn from Belgian media, which lambasted the team’s performance.

Belgium, who are rebuilding after their “golden generation” showed age had caught up with them in exiting at the group stage in the 2022 World Cup, can assure themselves of progressing to the last 32 with a win over New Zealand in their final group match on Friday.

Two-goal Haaland fires Norway into FIFA World Cup last 32

NEW YORK: Erling Haaland scored his second brace in a row in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 as Norway beat Senegal 3-2 on Monday to punch their ticket to the last 32.

Norway substitute Marcus Holmgren Pedersen struck late in the first half in New Jersey before Haaland doubled the lead shortly after the break.

Ismaila Sarr cut the deficit for Senegal, only for Haaland to punish more slack defending as Norway moved through to the knockout rounds with a game to spare despite a late consolation from Sarr.

Manchester City forward Haaland now has four goals in two games at the tournament, hot on the heels of Lionel Messi’s double earlier in the day which carried him to a record 18 World Cup goals. Not to be outdone, Kylian Mbappe scored another brace too as France beat Iraq 3-0.

Norway have lost only once in their last 18 matches and will take on France in a compelling battle for top spot in the group in Boston on Friday.

Senegal must beat Iraq, who are also without a point, in their final game to stand a chance of avoiding an early exit.

Led by the unstoppable Haaland, who increased his astonishing international goals tally to 59 in 52 games, Norway recorded back-to-back wins at the World Cup for the first time.

They added weight to the belief they can do serious damage at these finals with a dominant display against a Senegal side that paid heavily for their errors.

Norway quickly set the tone as Kristoffer Ajer’s header forced Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy into a terrific save with his legs at a corner, but they lost full-back Julian Ryerson to injury early on.

Captain Martin Odegaard skied over an inviting cut-back from the right for Norway, as Nicolas Jackson looked Senegal’s most dangerous threat.

Mendy again came to Senegal’s rescue with a superb block to deny Odegaard after Haaland cushioned down Antonio Nusa’s chipped cross into the box.

But Mendy allowed Pedersen’s low drive to creep under him after a dreadful mistake from skipper Kalidou Koulibaly gave the ball to the replacement right-back on the edge of the box.

Haaland rolled against the post from a tight angle after Mendy got in a tangle, but he made amends three minutes into the second half as Norway sliced Senegal apart on the counter-attack.

Odegaard surged upfield and slid a pass through to Haaland, who buried an emphatic finish past Mendy to add to the two goals he scored in Norway’s opening 4-1 victory over Iraq.

Senegal clawed their way back as Sarr showed great composure to poke home after tumbling to the ground following a clever flick into the area by Sadio Mane.

However, Koulibaly was at fault once more, failing to clear as Haaland steered a volley in off the crossbar from Patrick Berg’s cross, delighting Norwegian fans who provided a colourful backdrop with their viral rowing chant.

Mory Diaw came on for the injured Mendy in goal, but only a headed goalline clearance from Pathe Ciss prevented Oscar Bobb from netting Norway’s fourth.

Sarr’s second of the night set up a tense finish, but Norway held on to join France in the next round and leave Senegal’s hopes hanging by a thread.

Mbappe scores twice as France beat Iraq at FIFA World Cup

Kylian Mbappe marked his 100th cap by scoring two more FIFA World Cup goals on Monday as France eased to a 3-0 win over Iraq in a game delayed by two hours by a severe storm.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added another nine minutes into the second half, with last year’s Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele getting the other goal for the tournament favourites in Philadelphia.

Mbappe moved to 16 World Cup goals in his career, two behind Lionel Messi, who set a new record of 18 goals by netting twice for Argentina against Austria earlier on Monday.

The match in Philadelphia kicked off at 5:00 pm local time (21:00 GMT) and had to be halted at half-time as a huge storm passed over the city.

Having started in dry conditions, torrential rain began to fall late in the first half, and supporters were told as soon as the half-time whistle was blown to “exit the open seating area and seek shelter in covered areas”.

The vast majority of the 68,324-capacity Lincoln Financial Field is uncovered, leaving most of the capacity crowd to pack into the concourses.

The second half eventually got more than two hours behind schedule, in what was the first match at this World Cup to be held up by bad weather.

There are strict protocols in place in the United States that mean a game must be halted if a storm is detected in the area.

It is also raining goals at this World Cup for Mbappe, whose brace here followed two in France’s opening 3-1 win over Senegal last Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Real Madrid superstar and France captain became his country’s all-time top scorer with his goals against Senegal, overtaking the previous best tally of 57 for Olivier Giroud.

He now has 60 goals for Les Bleus in a century of appearances, and 16 of them have come at the World Cup in just 16 matches at the tournament.

Mbappe is now level on the all-time list of World Cup goals with Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who started the tournament as the all-time leading scorer.

He has overtaken the 15 goals scored by the Brazilian Ronaldo and seems set for a shoot-out at this year’s World Cup with Messi.

Next up for Mbappe and France is a meeting with Erling Haaland’s Norway in Boston on Friday, but the 2022 beaten finalists are already certain of reaching the last 32 after notching two wins from two games in Group I.

Iraq, meanwhile, are staring at the prospect of early elimination after this defeat, following a 4-1 loss to Norway in their opening game; they have now lost five games out of five across two World Cups, 40 years apart.

France made three changes from their opening game, with Bradley Barcola replacing Desire Doue on the left wing, Manu Kone stepping in for Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield, and Lucas Digne preferred to Theo Hernandez at left-back.

Mbappe opened the scoring before the quarter-hour mark when he controlled a pass with his right foot and sent in a shot from 20 metres, which was too powerful for Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.

Graham Arnold’s side were then dealt a blow as captain and striker Aymen Hussein had to come off with just 26 minutes gone.

The weather delay made for a surreal atmosphere as the storm passed overhead, leaving supporters drenched, and forced the players to sit it out in the dressing room.

When play resumed, Iraq caved in, with a calamitous passage of play gifting Mbappe and France their second goal on 54 minutes.

A goal-kick was taken by defender Zaid Tahseen, who tried to give it to goalkeeper Basil, but he hit it too hard and wide, and Dembele was able to set up Mbappe for a simple finish.

Michael Olise then hit the bar with a delicate chip before the Bayern Munich man set up Dembele to fire in on 66 minutes for 3-0.

Magical Messi takes Argentina into last 32 with win over Austria

Lionel Messi became the leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history as the captain struck twice to give Argentina a 2-0 win over Austria on Monday and send the champions into the last 32.

The player widely regarded as the greatest of all time pounced late in the first half in Texas with a trademark left-footed finish after neat build-up play.

The predatory goal added to his hat-trick in Argentina’s opening match to make it a record 17 in total at the World Cup.

The 38-year-old then sealed the match deep in second-half injury time as he outfoxed four defenders who lined up to keep the ball out.

It should have been even better for Messi, who missed a penalty early on, stunning a fiercely pro-Argentina 70,649 crowd at the air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“Very happy for the victory, it was very important, hard, hard, hard, and it gives us peace of mind for what is to come,” Messi, at his sixth World Cup, told broadcasters.

“The match was even, intense and we are happy to get six points.”

Messi’s name rang out along the concourses of the stadium after another virtuoso display.

“There is not much to say about Leo. More than 20 years being the best in the world, he is the best in history,” said striker Julian Alvarez.

With both sides knowing a win would put them into the knockout rounds with a game to spare, Lautaro Martinez was brought down in the box, sandwiched by two Austrian players.

Referee Amin Mohamed gave a penalty after a VAR intervention, and a wall of noise went up as Messi stepped forward on nine minutes.

But his run-up was slow and his weak effort off target, dragging it wide.

For all his brilliance, Messi — who turns 39 on Wednesday — is surprisingly poor from the penalty spot by his standards.

He also saw his spot-kick saved by Wojciech Szczesny in a 2-0 win over Poland at the 2022 World Cup, where Argentina went on to be champions, and missed at the 2018 tournament.

In the 19th minute Messi had a clear sniff at goal, only for Austria captain David Alaba to steal the ball off his toes at the last moment as he danced through.

Catch all FIFA World Cup 2026 live updates here!

Alaba denied Messi again just after the half-hour mark, blocking his goalbound shot with goalkeeper Alexander Schlager stranded.

Ralf Rangnick’s Austria, who beat debutants Jordan 3-1 in their opener, were content to sit back. They did not have a shot on target in the first half.

And then came the big moment, Messi sweeping in on 38 minutes after being set up by Facundo Medina, with Thiago Almada cleverly letting the ball run through his legs to leave Argentina’s talisman all on his own and the goal gaping.

The Argentina fans, who greatly outnumbered their Austrian counterparts, rose to acclaim their hero.

Messi had equalled Miroslav Klose’s all-time mark of 16 FIFA World Cup goals when hitting a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Algeria in the holders’ opening game.

Lionel Messi was tearful after his first goal against Algeria, and it later emerged that his father is recovering from an unspecified health issue.

Inter Miami attacker Messi had not even committed to playing the tournament in North America until the last moment.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain wizard dragged his country to World Cup glory four years ago, and the lure of representing his nation once again on the biggest stage proved irresistible.

Lionel Scaloni’s side failed to build on their lead, and the second half drifted, neither side creating much.

If anything, Austria threatened slightly more, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was only once seriously troubled.

And then up popped Messi to have the last word at the death.

“We knew that he is on a level of his own, and Lionel Messi showed us today that he’s the best,” said Rangnick.

Messi becomes all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history

ARLINGTON: Argentina captain Lionel Messi etched his name deeper into football history on Monday by becoming the outright leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

The 39-year-old reached the milestone during Argentina’s Group L clash against Austria, netting his 17th World Cup goal to move ahead of Germany legend Miroslav Klose, who had held the record with 16 goals.

Messi had drawn level with Klose last week when he scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria, but he now stands alone at the summit of the all-time scoring charts.

Most goals in FIFA World Cup history

  • Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 17*
  • Miroslav Klose (Germany) – 16
  • Ronaldo (Brazil) – 15
  • Kylian Mbappe (France) – 14*
  • Gerd Müller (West Germany) – 14
  • Just Fontaine (France) – 13

Interestingly, the Argentine superstar had earlier missed a golden opportunity to claim the record when he failed to convert a penalty.

The reigning champions were awarded a spot-kick following a VAR review after Lautaro Martinez was brought down inside the area by Alexander Schlager and Stefan Posch.

Messi stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort drifted wide of the right-hand post, leaving the veteran forward with his head in his hands.

However, the disappointment proved short-lived. Messi eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute, sending Argentina supporters into celebration as he surpassed Klose to become the most prolific scorer in the history of the men’s FIFA World Cup.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Semi-final qualification scenarios explained

LONDON: The race for the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has intensified as the group stage enters its decisive phase, with several teams still battling for the four available spots.

Hosts England, six-time champions Australia, India and West Indies remain unbeaten and are currently best placed to secure qualification, while a number of sides face must-win scenarios in their remaining matches.

Group A

Australia have once again underlined their status as tournament favourites, winning all three of their matches convincingly.

The six-time champions require just one victory from their remaining fixtures against Pakistan and India to confirm a place in the last four.

India are also firmly in contention despite suffering a defeat against South Africa. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side have four points from three matches and ideally need victories over Bangladesh and Australia to seal progression. However, if they lose one game and they would want South Africa to lose their remaining matches.

South Africa, runners-up in the previous two editions, are level with India on points after defeating Pakistan and India following an opening loss to Australia. They must beat Bangladesh and the Netherlands, that too with a good margin, to surpass India with a superior net run rate.

If India lose one of their games and South Africa win both of their games, then the latter will go to the semi-finals.

Bangladesh remain mathematically alive with four points after wins over Pakistan and the Netherlands. However, difficult clashes against India and South Africa await, meaning two big victories are likely necessary to reach the semi-finals. A single defeat could prove costly given their inferior net run rate.

Pakistan and the Netherlands have already been eliminated from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 after losing all three of their matches.

Group B

Hosts England have enjoyed a perfect start with three wins from three matches and require just one more victory from their remaining encounters against West Indies and defending champions New Zealand to secure a semi-final berth.

West Indies are in a similarly strong position. Hayley Matthews’ side opened with an impressive win over New Zealand before edging past Scotland and Sri Lanka. Another victory, against either England or Ireland, will be enough to guarantee progression.

Defending champions New Zealand are facing an early exit after managing only one victory in three games. The White Ferns must win both of their remaining fixtures against Scotland and England and hope other results work in their favour.

Scotland are alive on paper, having just one win. They face Sri Lanka and New Zealand in their final two group matches, needing back-to-back victories and a significant boost to their net run rate to keep their hopes alive.

Sri Lanka’s campaign has been inconsistent, although their victory over defending champions New Zealand keeps them in contention. With matches against Ireland and Scotland remaining, they still have an outside chance of making the last four.

Ireland, meanwhile, have been officially knocked out after suffering three consecutive defeats.
