Barca’s Flick happy to have players back for Atletico clash

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said he was relieved to have some injured players returning to fitness ahead of Tuesday’s crunch clash against Atletico Madrid.

Barca moved to the top of La Liga with Saturday’s 3-1 defeat of Alaves, although Atletico in the fourth, are only three points back.

Pedri made his first team return as a second-half substitute on Saturday after more than a month out with a hamstring problem.

He is in line to start against Diego Simeone’s rugged outfit, as is midfield partner Frenkie de Jong, who missed the Alaves match for family reasons.

“I’m really happy. The players are coming back, maybe we can increase our level. This is the most important thing,” Flick said on Monday, although he confirmed that Uruguayan centre-back Ronald Araujo is out.

The German has come under fire this seen for a series of abject displays, not least in the Catalans’ highest profile matches — a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea and 2-1 reverses against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite being top of the table, Flick admitted that Barca needs to improve.

“I know we are not (in) top (form) like last season,” he said. “But we have potential. And we have to increase our level.”

England urged to ‘use their brains’ ahead of second Ashes Test

Legendary cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has called on England players to ‘use their brains’ as Ben Stokes’ side aims for a win in the second pink-ball Ashes Test.

Former opener Boycott spoke about England’s attacking ‘go big or go home’ approach, noting that while it has often paid off, it has also led to failures.

“But it doesn’t help our chances of success if Ben Stokes keeps encouraging our batsmen to attack, attack with one finger hovering over the self-destruct button,” Boycott wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.

He emphasized that the players should take more responsibility, noting that they should play positively but according to the situation.

“Nobody is asking the players to stop being positive because they have given us some marvellous, thrilling, and entertaining cricket. All we ask is for them to use their brains and realise there are times when they should throttle back and be aware of situations and bat accordingly,” he said.

Geoffrey Boycott also addressed the England captain’s remarks regarding past players.

The remarks from the former opener came after Stokes called the retired players ‘has-beens’ for criticising his side’s approach.

“To call past players ‘has-beens’ was disrespectful, especially as some of those ‘has-beens’ played in teams that won the Ashes in England and Australia,” said Boycott.

“I am glad Ben has half apologised, saying it was a slip of the tongue, because none of this team have won the Ashes in Australia. Get the job done, because then you don’t need to say anything and you can bask in all the glory coming your way,” the 85-year-old concluded.

The second day-night Ashes Test will commence on Thursday, with England eyeing their first victory against Australia down under since 2010.

The three-lions are 1-0 down in the five-match series after a thumping eight-wicket loss to Australia inside two days in Perth.

QEAT Final: Usman, Fazal lift Karachi Blues against Sialkot

LAHORE: Abdullah Fazal and Usman Khan’s gutsy knocks propelled Karachi Blues to a strong start against the defending champions Sialkot on the opening day of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (QEAT) 2025-26 final here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

Put into bat first, Karachi Blues demonstrated a strong batting display and racked up 288-6 at the end of the day’s play.

Fazal remained the top-scorer with 88 off 149, whereas Usman remained unbeaten with 80 off 107 balls, featuring 10 fours and a six.

The leading run-scorer of the tournament, Saad Baig, started positively and added 80 runs for the opening wicket with Abdullah Fazal.

The stand culminated with Saad’s wicket, trapped lbw off Hasan Ali’s bowling. The southpaw made 39 from 59 with the aid of eight boundaries.

After a strong start, Siakot bowlers made a comeback and triggered a mini-collapse, slumping Karachi from 80-1 to 125-4.

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood was caught on the crease after managing to score 13, while Mohammad Hasnain sent back Haroon Arshad (15) and skipper Saud Shakeel for nought to put his side into a dominant position.

However, wicket-keeper batter Usman Khan and Abdullah Fazal arrested the slide with a 98-run partnership, bringing the total to 223.

Siakot skipper Usama Mir broke the threatening stand in the 54th over of the innings as Fazal was caught by Mohammad Huraira.

Usman, meanwhile, held one end and stitched another brief stand with Rameez Aziz. With this stand, the scorecard read 267; however, Sialkot removed the latter in the dying hours of the day, which made the opening day evenly shared.

For Sialkot, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Hasnain chipped in with the ball, scalping two wickets each. Usama Mir and Mohammad Ali also took one wicker apiece.

Italian tennis icon Nicola Pietrangeli dies aged 92

Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time winner of the French Open, has died at the age of 92, Italy’s tennis federation announced on Monday.

“Italian tennis is mourning an icon. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian inducted into the World Tennis Hall of Fame, has died,” said the FITP.

Born in Tunis in 1933 to an Italian father and Russian mother, Pietrangeli was widely considered the country’s greatest ever tennis player until the emergence of current world number two Jannik Sinner.

He was also one of the best clay-court players of his generation, with three titles in Monte Carlo and his home Italian Open tournament in Rome, where a court is named in his honour.

In total, Pietrangeli won 44 singles titles over his career, including his two triumphs at Roland Garros in 1959 and 1960, and reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in the same year as his second French Open title.

An all-round sportsman, Nicola Pietrangeli played for the football team Lazio until he was 18 years old, but he switched to tennis after the Rome-based club tried to send him away on loan.

Pietrangeli’s first victory at Roland Garros was the first time any Italian player had won a Grand Slam and came after he defeated South African Ian Vermaak in the final.

He also won that year’s doubles tournament, which back then was hugely popular, alongside his compatriot Orlando Sirola, with whom he formed a formidable pairing.

Gifted with an excellent backhand, precise ball control, and impressive stamina, he won his second French Open title in 1960 against Chilean Luis Ayala before being beaten twice in the 1961 and 1964 finals by Spaniard Manuel Santana.

During the majority of his career, tennis was divided between amateurs, who played in the traditional top tournaments and the Davis Cup, and professionals who joined a parallel circuit once they established a reputation as a top player.

Unlike his contemporaries Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall, Pietrangeli didn’t turn professional until the beginning of the Open era in 1968, by which time he was in his mid-30s.

After his retirement, Pietrangeli, a fan of the high life, became a media personality, presenting popular sports programme La Domenica Sportiva and appearing in three films.

“If I’d trained harder, I would have won more, but I would have had less fun,” he once said.

Pietrangeli was also a Davis Cup stalwart, playing a record 164 matches for Italy, although he never managed to win it as a player, losing the final in 1960 and 1961.

He racked up those appearances between 1954 and 1972, but he didn’t taste success in the international tournament until 1976, when he captained his country to its first title.

Australia beat Pakistan to clinch Over-40s T20 World Cup

KARACHI: Australia lifted the IMC Over-40s T20 Cricket World Cup 2025 trophy on Monday, edging past Pakistan in the final at the National Cricket Stadium with a seven-wicket victory.

Chasing a target of 151, Australia’s innings was anchored by Steve Nottle, who scored a calm 47 off 40 balls, and Steven Paulsen, contributing a crucial 42 off 34 deliveries.

The victory was sealed in emphatic fashion by Nasir Jalil, whose explosive 25* off just 10 balls, including a strike rate of 250, ensured Australia crossed the line with an over to spare.

For Pakistan, Fawad Alam fought valiantly with the ball, finishing with figures of 2-16, but it wasn’t enough to defend their total.

Earlier, Pakistan opted to bat after winning the toss.

However, Australia’s Mark Cleary turned the game on its head with a brilliant spell of 5-22, keeping Pakistan under control despite useful knocks from Nadeem Javed (24), Fawad Alam (24), and Abdul Razzaq (19).

Pakistan could manage only 150-9 in their allotted 20 overs.

The IMC Over-40s T20 Cricket World Cup 2025 featured 12 international teams and included a total of 42 matches hosted across Karachi.

Labuschagne throws support behind Khawaja ahead of pink-ball Ashes Test

BRISBANE: Marnus Labuschagne has publicly backed embattled opener Usman Khawaja ahead of the second Ashes Test, shutting down speculation that he could move up the order even if Australia decide to make changes at the top.

Khawaja endured a difficult outing in the opening Test against England in Perth, managing just two runs across the match while also battling back spasms that kept him off the field for significant periods.

England’s first-innings collapse meant he did not get the chance to open as scheduled, and when he walked out at No.4, he was dismissed cheaply by Brydon Carse

His movement in the field was restricted again on the second day, where he recovered enough to take a sharp catch at first slip to dismiss Harry Brook before his back flared up once more while attempting another chance off Jamie Smith.

The situation has intensified scrutiny on Khawaja’s form, with the left-hander averaging just over 31 since the end of the 2023 Ashes and registering only one century over that period.

The conversation gained further traction after Travis Head smashed a match-winning hundred as a stand-in opener, reigniting talk of a possible long-term change at the top of the order.

Speaking at The Gabba on Monday, Labuschagne dismissed the narrative that Khawaja needs guidance or replacement at this stage.

“I think Usman is a high-quality player and I don’t think he needs advice,” Labuschagne told reporters.

He praised the veteran’s record, longevity and adaptability, highlighting his consistency since returning to the Test side in 2021 and describing him as the backbone of the batting unit.

“You look at his record, 85 Tests and what he’s done for Australian cricket, especially since his comeback in 2021,” he added.

“He’s been super consistent; he’s been really the rock [in] the top there. I think there’s been a lot of talk about how many opening partners he’s had over his time.

“The way he’s gone about his game, the way he’s gone from a No. 3, 4 and then opened the batting, navigated some tricky scenarios, he’s just been awesome.”

Marnus Labuschagne also stressed that selection decisions rest solely with the management and that his focus remains on contributing in his own role.

“I think whatever happens is up to the people above my pay grade and what they deem is the best way for us to win the game and win this series. I think it’s just game by game and you work out what’s your best team,” he further stated.

Three Pakistan stars secure deals in BPL 2025–26 auction

Pakistan’s fast bowler, Ihsanullah, all-rounder Jahandad Khan and middle-order batter Haider Ali were among the notable overseas signings at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) players’ auction for the 2026 season, held in Dhaka on Sunday.

The upcoming edition of the tournament is scheduled to run from December 26, 2025, to January 23, 2026, and will mark a major structural shift, with the number of participating teams reduced from seven to five.

Dhaka Capitals and Rangpur Riders will continue, while Chattogram Royals, Rajshahi Warriors and Sylhet Titans enter the league under new ownership following the exit of their previous franchises. Defending champions Fortune Barishal and Khulna Tigers will not feature this season.

Among the Pakistan recruits, Ihsanullah attracted the highest bid after being picked up by Noakhali Express for USD 28,000 in Category C of foreign players.

The right-arm pacer has previously represented Pakistan in one ODI and four T20Is and is set for a fresh start after going unsighted in an earlier stint with Rangpur Riders.

Haider Ali was also snapped up by the same franchise for USD 20,000. The 24-year-old brings solid international experience with 37 appearances for Pakistan and has already featured in 13 BPL matches, scoring 213 runs with a highest score of 48 not out.

Meanwhile, Jahandad Khan, who made his T20I debut against Australia last November and has since played eight internationals, will turn out for Rajshahi Warriors after being picked for USD 20,000 in the same category.

The latest auction additions take the number of Pakistan players in this year’s BPL to nine. Usman Khan has been directly signed by Dhaka Capitals, while Chattogram Royals have secured Abrar Ahmed.

Sylhet Titans have brought in Saim Ayub along with experienced pacer Mohammad Amir.

Rangpur Riders, on the other hand, have acquired young wicketkeeper-batter Khawaja Nafay, while Rajshahi Warriors have also roped in top-order batter Sahibzada Farhan.

Kane Williamson bolsters New Zealand for West Indies Test series

New Zealand batting talisman Kane Williamson returns to the Test arena for the first time in a year to bolster the hosts’ line-up in the first Test against the West Indies in Christchurch, which begins Tuesday.

The 35-year-old sat out New Zealand’s only other Tests this year — a 2-0 series win in Zimbabwe in August — but has a formidable Test record against the West Indies.

From seven home innings, he averages 72.57, while over 10 innings in the West Indies, the figure is an impressive 51.33.

One of the greatest batsmen of his generation, Williamson has a career average of 54.88 from 105 Tests, with 33 centuries.

He scored 156 against England in his last Test innings at Hamilton in December last year.

West Indies captain Roston Chase said Monday there was only one way to quell Ken Williamson.

“Patience. I would say the most important thing is patience,” Chase said as his West Indies team went through their final practice.

The West Indies face a monumental task. They have not won a Test in New Zealand since 1995 and lost both the Twenty20 and ODI series last month.

“We want that win,” said Chase, who believes his side can end that 30-year win drought. “We don’t want to be on the bad side of history all the time.

“I mean, we fought well in the two white-ball series, and I just think if we can learn a bit faster and adapt a bit faster, especially with problem solving, we can get over the line with the red ball for sure.”

While the Test opens New Zealand’s campaign in the new edition of the World Test Championship, the West Indies have already played five in recent months without success, losing 3-0 to Australia and 2-0 to India.

The recent lack of five-day cricket for New Zealand, whose previous outing before Zimbabwe was that home series against England a year ago, did not faze captain Tom Latham.

“For us it’s about trying to hit the ground running and try to get into the mode of Test cricket as quick as we can,” he said.

“And if we do that, hopefully that gives us a good chance at the back end of the match.”

Christchurch’s Hagley Oval presented a green wicket on the eve of the Test on Monday.

It led Latham to predict that “it will be no different” from previous Tests at the venue where the team that wins the toss elects to bowl first.

Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s longstanding record

RANCHI: Virat Kohli etched his name deeper into cricketing history on Sunday as he surpassed a long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar during the first ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.

The Indian batting stalwart produced a breathtaking knock of 135 off 120 deliveries, featuring 11 fours and seven sixes, to register his 52nd ODI century.

In doing so, he broke Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in a single format, which was 51 Test hundreds.

Kohli reached the landmark in the 38th over of India’s innings before being dismissed while attempting a lofted stroke, walking back after yet another masterclass.

His monumental innings also added to an already remarkable year, having earlier become the fastest batter to reach 14,000 runs in ODI cricket, achieving the feat in just 287 innings, far quicker than any of his contemporaries.

Kohli’s century was the centrepiece of a dominant Indian batting display, supported by half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, as India posted an imposing total of 349 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs.

South Africa mounted a spirited chase in response but fell agonisingly short in a high-scoring contest, getting bowled out for 332 in 49.2 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav led India’s bowling effort with four crucial wickets to swing the game in the hosts’ favour.
